Examining The Relationship Between Personality, Values, And Treatment Retention In Substance Abuse Programs: A Quantitative Correlation Analysis, Jonathan Ciampi Dec 2024

Examining The Relationship Between Personality, Values, And Treatment Retention In Substance Abuse Programs: A Quantitative Correlation Analysis, Jonathan Ciampi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) continues to be a global issue with devasting effects on the community, loved ones, and individuals suffering from SUD. Healthcare professionals continue to develop improved treatments for addressing patient needs, yet treatment abandonment remains high. While studies have examined treatment retention factors, few have examined the relationship between personality traits, values, and treatment retention. This study examined the relationship between the five-factor model of personality traits, the theory of formal axiology of values, and the days in treatment for adults in a telehealth substance abuse outpatient clinic in the United States. The study assessed the combined …

Publications

Rare event prediction is critical in industrial applications, including real-world Industry 4.0 applications. These events, defined by their low occurrence frequency, are often difficult to predict due to the skewed data distribution, which complicates modeling and evaluation. In our research, we provide a comprehensive review of current approaches to rare event prediction across four key dimensions: rare event data, data processing techniques, algorithmic approaches, and evaluation methodologies [1]. By analyzing diverse datasets with multiple modalities, including numerical, image, text, and audio, we categorize the primary challenges and present the gaps in current research. Specifically, we present three novel research contributions …

Predicting Chaotic Systems With Quantum Echo-State Networks, Erik Connerty, Ethan N. Evans, Gerasimos Angelatos, Vignesh Narayanan Dec 2024

Predicting Chaotic Systems With Quantum Echo-State Networks, Erik Connerty, Ethan N. Evans, Gerasimos Angelatos, Vignesh Narayanan

Publications

Recent advancements in artificial neural networks have enabled impressive tasks on classical computers, but they demand significant computational resources. While quantum computing offers potential beyond classical systems, the advantages of quantum neural networks (QNNs) remain largely unexplored. In this work, we present and examine a quantum circuit (QC) that implements and aims to improve upon the classical echo-state network (ESN), a type of reservoir-based recurrent neural networks (RNNs), using quantum computers. Typically, ESNs consist of an extremely large reservoir that learns high-dimensional embeddings, enabling prediction of complex system trajectories. Quantum echo-state networks (QESNs) aim to reduce this need for prohibitively …

Characterizing Full-Time, Non-Tenure-Track Teaching Faculty In Biology, Desiree Forsythe, Jeremy L. Hsu Dec 2024

Characterizing Full-Time, Non-Tenure-Track Teaching Faculty In Biology, Desiree Forsythe, Jeremy L. Hsu

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Institutions of higher education play a major role in teaching undergraduate students. Historically, most courses have been taught by tenure-track (TT) faculty who may also be responsible for research or scholarly activities. However, a recent shift from “teaching-intensive” TT faculty to “teaching-only” contingent faculty off the tenure track has highlighted the importance of understanding the experiences of contingent faculty. While there have been an increasing number of studies examining the experiences of part-time contingent faculty, few studies have directly surveyed the increasing number of full-time, non-tenure-track (NTT) teaching faculty in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to capture their experiences, …

How Atmospheres Communicate: Aesthetics Of Burial Grounds And Car-Showrooms, Jürgen Hasse Dec 2024

How Atmospheres Communicate: Aesthetics Of Burial Grounds And Car-Showrooms, Jürgen Hasse

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

On the one hand, atmospheres constitute themselves from situations. On the other hand, they are also produced for a specific purpose, in order to communicate feelings and the meanings associated with them. This article elaborates theoretical foundations of a recent philosophy of atmospheres. It turns out that aesthetic form not only follows function but that function also follows form. In the emission of atmospheres, there is a dialectic between surface aesthetics and depth aesthetics. Two examples illustrate the affective power of atmospheres. In the example of cemeteries, plants act in a special way as an immersive media of communication. In …

On Education In A Digital Age, Colby Dickinson Dec 2024

On Education In A Digital Age, Colby Dickinson

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Research and its dependency upon authority has mostly produced in the modern age a simulacrum for what a true education should entail: an infinite passion for an infinite knowledge that can only really be approached with a desire that resembles something like love. We have to want to learn, to love to learn, to want to dig through the information before us, because we are passionately committed to knowing something in particular, always in an ever-greater particularity, even when we just need to get the general gist of something specific. Where desire ends as a result of touching imposed limits, …

Corruption And Education: A Cross-Analysis Using Panel Data, Abdul Salam Lodhi, Adnan Nazir, Muhammad Toseef

CBER Conference

Education is the foundational pillar of every country to find pathways of prosperity, present and future. The question that academicians and legislators are trying to answer circles around whether education planting is corruption or not. On the one hand, a first strand of studies supports the role of education in negatively affecting corruption via, inter alia, channels of legal behavior, social responsibility, improved social cohesion and creation of a shackled society (Asongu & Nwachukwu, 2015; Uslaner & Rothstein 2016, Merloni 2018,; Beets, 2005; Oreopoulos and Salvanes, 2009; Acemoglu and Robinsen 2020). On the other hand, a second stream of studies …

Gender Segregation In Caring Labor: The Impact Of Social Norms On Career Choices, Evelyn Xinhui Cheng Dec 2024

Gender Segregation In Caring Labor: The Impact Of Social Norms On Career Choices, Evelyn Xinhui Cheng

CBER Conference

Women engage in work stereotypically seen as "women's work," or work based on the perceived "natural" female tendency towards caring and relational thinking (Tung 2000). In pre-reform China, Shu (2005) found that women were more concentrated in the lowerpaying collective sector compared to men in the state-owned sector, contributing to the gender wage gap. China's horizontal occupational segregation by gender has significant implications for gender pay gaps, workforce attachment, and the perceived value of caring labor in society. Feminist scholars argue that gendered norms around caring originate that conflate womanhood with nurturing (England 2005; Litt & Zimmerman 2003). The main …

An Empirical Assessment Of The Determinants Of Radicalization: Evidence From North-Western Pakistan, Fahim Nawaz Dec 2024

An Empirical Assessment Of The Determinants Of Radicalization: Evidence From North-Western Pakistan, Fahim Nawaz

CBER Conference

Radicalization is a formidable challenge to the security of several nations. While radicalization continues to grow, empirical evidence on its determinants remains scant. Drawing on the surge in radicalization in Pakistan, this study jointly tests a set of salient micro, macro, and meso factors to identify the influential determinants of radicalization. This is accomplished using survey data collected in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. The study constructs a multi-dimensional index of radicalization, taking into account the support for militant groups, violent behavioral intentions, and the endorsement of persecution/violence against Ahmadis and the alleged blasphemers of Islam. Results show that …

Textiles serve as the export engine of Pakistan’s economy, constituting 60 percent of its total exports. Despite this prominence, Pakistan's global share in textile exports has consistently declined. Considering this, this study explores the potential impact of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) on fostering textile exports. The study applied a structural gravity model with the Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood (PPML) estimator to analyze annual exports for the period 2002–2021. Findings exhibit a positive and statistically significant effect of FTAs on textile exports, with varied impacts compared to major competitors. Moreover, we categorized textile products at the HS 4-digit level based on their …

Investigating The Effect Of Active Living Wall On Indoor Air Quality And Energy Consumption: Case Study In Uaeu Closed Offices, Atina Ghunaim Dec 2024

Investigating The Effect Of Active Living Wall On Indoor Air Quality And Energy Consumption: Case Study In Uaeu Closed Offices, Atina Ghunaim

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Extreme hot climates can significantly affect indoor air quality (IAQ) and ventilation, resulting in higher energy demands. Numerous studies have demonstrated that outdoor greening, such as trees and landscaped areas, can reduce a building’s energy consumption. However, less research has been conducted on the impact of indoor vegetation on energy use and air quality. Indoor vegetation decreases carbon dioxide (CO₂) concentration by absorbing and releasing oxygen (O₂), while the evapotranspiration process further enhances (IAQ) and reduces energy expenditure. The United Arab Emirates has dry arid climate and summers with high humidity levels, causing individuals to stay longer indoors, which is …
