Effect Of Developmental Manganese Exposure On The Locomotor Behavior Of Zebrafish Larvae, Breeann Mild
Effect Of Developmental Manganese Exposure On The Locomotor Behavior Of Zebrafish Larvae, Breeann Mild
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Manganese, an essential trace mineral, plays crucial roles in various physiological processes within living organisms. However, excessive exposure to manganese can lead to toxicity, particularly impacting the central nervous system. This study aimed to assess the impact of manganese exposure on locomotor behavior during early development using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model organism. Zebrafish embryos at 1–2 hours post fertilization (hpf) were exposed to five different concentrations of manganese chloride (0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, or 0.5 mM) until 120 hpf. Locomotor behavior was assessed using the visual motor response assay, measuring parameters such as total distance moved, velocity, and …

Optimization Of Tps Films Using An Adaptive Design Of Experiments Approach In A Bayesian Optimization Framework, Theresa Marks, Gracie White, Scott Lohman, Mayank Malhotra
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Plastic pollution, amounting to 12 million tons annually, necessitates sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Compostable thermoplastic starch (TPS) films show promise but lack strength and durability compared to traditional plastics. This study employs an adaptive design of experiments (DoE) approach to enhance TPS films by optimizing testing points. The research focuses on varying concentrations of plasticizers (acetic acid and glycerol) in a water and potato starch mixture, aiming to identify the optimal ratio maximizing tensile strength and % elongation at break. Gaussian process regression (GPR) with uncertainty estimation and Bayesian optimization (BO) utilizing an acquisition function (AF) are employed. The …

Bacteriophage, a type of virus that infects bacteria, was discovered 100 years ago, initially isolated with a plaque assay in the 1940s. A mycobacteriophage is a subtype of bacteriophage that specifically infects mycobacteria. Since the introduction of DNA technologies and efforts to identify a plethora of bacteriophages, over 10,000 bacteriophages have been identified with 1,500 sequenced. Bacteriophage discovery has aided in genetic editing techniques, the development of synthetic biology tools, and disease treatment. However, to be able to expand on these capabilities, there is a need to identify more bacteriophages and sequence the genomes of these viruses, as they outnumber …
The Influence Of Soil Properties And Land Management On Soil Porewater Chemistry, Bethany Kettleborough
The Influence Of Soil Properties And Land Management On Soil Porewater Chemistry, Bethany Kettleborough
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Soil water dynamics influence vegetation health, soil geochemical reactions, and stream chemistry. Water dynamics can be controlled by soil type and land management. It is important to understand water movement due to its influence on soil weathering, microbial activity, and nutrient transport. Water movement can be investigated using water stable isotope variability as a tracer. The purpose of this ongoing study was to analyze stable isotopes and dissolved ions in prairie and agricultural land management sites in Nebraska and Illinois. Prairies typically contain deep-rooted grasses, while agricultural lands contain shallow-rooted row crops. Root depth is considered a major control on …
And You Don't Seem To Understand: Disanalogies Between Artificial And Biological Consciousness, Derek Freeman
And You Don't Seem To Understand: Disanalogies Between Artificial And Biological Consciousness, Derek Freeman
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
This paper posits a new way of attempting to formulate theories of machine consciousness. At present, inquiry revolves around formulating criteria that could be applied to machines to determine if they possess human-like consciousness. The paper demonstrates that efforts so far have not been fruitful, instead finding that present methods of inquiry are destined to result in an impasse between those who support the notion of machine consciousness and those who oppose it. Consequently, the paper questions the assumption that human and machine consciousness must resemble each other. It explores a different approach, one that rejects the idea that the …
Technological Accessibility For Wildlife Telemetry Research, Andrew Danielson
Technological Accessibility For Wildlife Telemetry Research, Andrew Danielson
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Over the course of two years, I conducted original research into improving accessibility for researchers in the field of wildlife telemetry. Wildlife telemetry is a technique used by biologists to track wildlife in the field, which requires the biologist to attach a small radio transmitter to an animal, usually using a specially designed collar, harness, or another means. These transmitters are battery powered and will emit or transmit a regularly timed radio signal that can be received by radio receivers carried by the researchers. Two issues faced by wildlife telemetry researchers are the cost of wildlife telemetry equipment and the …

Current Issues in Middle Level Education
STEM pedagogy is a popular area for research and discussion. The empirical literature on this topic supports a variety of approaches (e.g., inquiry-based) to help instructors spark student interest create an effective learning environment, and foster long-term retention and transfer of information related to STEM topics. One potential approach is to use tenets of embodied cognition, in which behavior and cognition emerge out of real-time sensorimotor behavior of the individual situated within a particular context, to implement strategies to enhance STEM pedagogy. We applied the six lessons of embodied cognition to understand the beneficial aspects of a middle-school project on …

Possibility Above Actuality In Sartre’S Ontology Existential Thoughts On Education, James M. Magrini
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
Systematic philosophies and practices of education, more often than not, tend to define the nature of the human being in terms of an immutable essence. For example, a manipulable organism within the learning environment or empty vessel to be filled with the knowledge it lacks. Systematic education, for the most part, is based on the uncritical acceptance of such antecedent ontological/biological conclusions regarding human being; views which leaves little room for the exploration and experience of human freedom. In response to this aforementioned problem, the pressing issue grounding this essay, which educators seeking to better serve their students should consider, …

The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez
Kritika Kultura
At the nexus of a prevailing Filipino-American discourse that celebrates the Filipino-American as a cooperative participant in the United States nation-building project sits an “unnamable violence” that masks the genocidal preconditions of “multiculturalist” white supremacy, to which this discourse unwittingly subscribes. The article explores the beginnings and development of this discourse, and the workings of American white supremacy in naturalizing relations of death between itself and its “others.” The article ends with a reflection on how “natural” disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo become means of legitimizing discourses that reinforce white invulnerability vis-à-vis disposability of non-white …

Assessing Risks Of Atypical Sexually Violent Offenders, Lesli Mattheus
Assessing Risks Of Atypical Sexually Violent Offenders, Lesli Mattheus
Master of Arts in Human Services
Forensic behavioral health research over the past few decades has revealed the complexities of assessing sexually violent offenders (SVOs). Risk assessments play a critical role in determining penalties and treatment, evaluating recidivism risk, and guiding interventions. However, most research has focused on adult male offenders, leaving a significant gap in understanding less common offender types, such as women, juveniles, and pedophiles or child sexual abusers. Gender biases and underreporting limit the understanding of women offenders, while juveniles face challenges like substance use disorders and mental health issues. Structured clinical judgment is a key method for assessing SVO risk, but forensic …

Enhanced Glucose Production In Norepinephrine And Palmitate Stimulated Hepatocytes Following Endurance Training, Ken D. Sumida, Vera M. Lordan, Casey M. Donovan
Health Sciences and Kinesiology Faculty Articles
Enhanced hepatic gluconeogenesis plays an important role in exercise glucose homeostasis when hepatic glycogen stores are depleted. Livers from trained animals demonstrate greater rates of gluconeogenesis in the presence of elevated substrate with and without hormonal stimulation. Training has been reported to have a particularly profound impact on norepinephrine-stimulated gluconeogenesis, but this was only demonstrated in the presence of other gluconeogenic hormones. Here we reexamine the impact of endurance training on norepinephrine-stimulated gluconeogenesis in the absence of any other hormones. Isolated hepatocytes from trained and untrained rats were incubated in 6 mM lactate with various concentrations of norepinephrine (0 nM–20 …

Performance Prediction For Hub-Based Swarms, Puneet Jain
Performance Prediction For Hub-Based Swarms, Puneet Jain
Theses and Dissertations
Optimization problems lie at the core of improving performance in various tasks, ranging from day-to-day work scheduling to coordinating robots in a warehouse fulfillment center. Distributed swarm systems provide a robust and adaptive solution approach to many optimization problems. Instead of using one really sophisticated agent, multiple smaller less sophisticated agents can provide the flexibility to evaluate more options and still provide a "good" answer. This dissertation uses graphs to model, analyze, and simulate swarm behavior, primarily to predict the time-to-converge (TTC) and success probability. First, we use a bipartite model for the distributed best-of-N problem, and show how the …

2-Cyanoindene is one of the few specific aromatic or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules positively identified in Taurus molecular cloud-1 (TMC-1), a cold, dense molecular cloud that is considered the nearest star-forming region to Earth. We report cryogenic mid-infrared (550–3200 cm–1) and visible (16,500–20,000 cm–1, over the D2 ← D0 electronic transition) spectra of 2-cyanoindene radical cations (2CNI+), measured using messenger tagging (He and Ne) photodissociation spectroscopy. The infrared spectra reveal the prominence of anharmonic couplings, particularly over the fingerprint region. There is a strong CN-stretching mode at 2177 ± 1 cm–1 (4.593 …
A Multimodal Examination Of Altered Reward Processing In Anhedonia, Christopher J.H. Pirrung
A Multimodal Examination Of Altered Reward Processing In Anhedonia, Christopher J.H. Pirrung
Psychology ETDs
Anhedonia refers to a complex deficit in depression, characterized by deficits in reward processing. An EEG signal of reward, the Reward Positivity, has been proposed as a potential biomarker of depressive symptoms. In this investigation, we define generative neural sources of the Reward Positivity using MEG and examine the source level deficits of this signal associated with anhedonia. A composite measure of anhedonia was defined in this sample, combining several self-report measures of anhedonia. Ventral hypoactivation was present in depressed individuals alongside a counterintuitive positive correlation with anhedonia. An independent study using fMRI in the same subjects found similar, but …
