Effect Of Social Impact Project On Student Motivation, Engagement, And Achievement, Jayna Lise Moffit
Effect Of Social Impact Project On Student Motivation, Engagement, And Achievement, Jayna Lise Moffit
Student Theses and Dissertations
The study’s purpose is to determine how student voice, empowerment, and empathy influence student motivation to affect student leadership, impactor identity, and academic achievement, students long-term, and the school culture at large. The self-determination theory is the study’s conceptual framework, which assumes individuals are behaviorally driven by the need to grow and gain fulfillment using the internal universal needs of competency, autonomy, and relatedness. Based upon a case study design with a reflexive latent thematic analysis, the researcher collected qualitative data using snowball sampling from students, teachers, and school leaders from a local junior high who each participated in a …

Montane Molluscs: Factors Affecting Snails And Their Trematodes Throughout The Mountain Regions Of Arkansas, Taylor Michelle Fiedor
Student Theses and Dissertations
Spatial processes across both broad and fine scales are important for understanding ecosystem function. Broad-scale spatial processes can be defined as elevational, latitudinal, or longitudinal processes whereas fine-scale spatial processes represent movement and dispersal among habitat patches. Historically, studies on freshwater snail distributions have focused on fine-scale processes with secondary consideration given to spatial sampling. Species inventories for freshwater snails are outdated because historically snail species descriptions were based on shell morphology, which is highly plastic. In Arkansas, it is estimated that there are 36 freshwater snail species, but this estimate does not account for shell plasticity and does not …
The Examination Of Hindering Factors Of 2-Year Community College Students’ Vertical Transfer To 4-Year Colleges, Rahime-Malik Howard
The Examination Of Hindering Factors Of 2-Year Community College Students’ Vertical Transfer To 4-Year Colleges, Rahime-Malik Howard
Student Theses and Dissertations
The current study examined hindering factors of 2-year community college students’ vertical transfer to 4-year colleges. The Rational Choice Theory guided the study and provided the scope of the problem, which is community college students' apprehension about transferring to 4-year colleges vertically. A quantitative Likert scale survey, which comprised demographic questions and measures of variable scales, was the data-gathering instrument. The measures of study variables were the College Persistence Questionnaire, the Student Financial Wellness Survey, the Academic Motivation Scale, and self-authored questions. The first three research questions of the study sought to explore whether apprehension to vertically transfer (RQ1), financial …

The extraction and purification methods of polysaccharides from edible fungi determine their structure, which in turn affects their biological activity, and is the basis of research on edible fungi polysaccharides. Some specific structural features make the biological activity of edible mushroom polysaccharides significantly enhanced. Therefore, researchers have used physical, biological and chemical methods to modify the molecular structure of edible mushroom polysaccharides to improve their biological activity. The review introduced the extraction, purification and structural modification methods of edible fungi polysaccharides. The advantages and disadvantages of extraction, purification of polysaccharides from edible fungi, and the effects of chemical modification on …

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) belong to a continuous disease spectrum of myeloid malignancies with poor prognosis in the relapsed/refractory setting necessitating novel therapies. Natural killer (NK) cells from patients with myeloid malignancies display global dysfunction with impaired killing capacity, altered metabolism and exhausted phenotype at the single cell transcriptomic and proteomic levels. In this study we identified that this dysfunction was mediated through a crosstalk between NK cells and myeloid blasts necessitating cell-cell contact. NK cell dysfunction could be prevented by targeting the αvβ integrin/TGF-β/SMAD pathway but, once established, was persistent due to profound epigenetic reprogramming. …

Screening Of Antimicrobial Peptides From Plants And Their Application In Food, Liu Min, Huang Xiangyu, Wu Hao, Wen Li, Cheng Yunhui, Chen Maolong
Food and Machinery
In recent years, with the emergence of resistance to traditional antibiotics and the growing interest in the development of natural antimicrobials, natural antimicrobial peptides have received extensive attention. Among them, plant-derived antimicrobial peptides have the characteristics of low drug resistance, wide antibacterial spectrum and low toxicity, and because of rich cysteine residues, they can form multiple disulfide bonds, so they have high chemical, thermal and enzymatic hydrolysis stability. In this paper, the classification of plant antimicrobial peptides and the methods of extracting and screening antimicrobial peptides from plant sources were reviewed. The potential applications of plant antimicrobial peptides in the …

Advance On Biosynthesis Of Antibacterial Peptides And Its Application In Food Preservation, Su Yan, Li Rong
Food and Machinery
Antibacterial peptides have unique antibacterial mechanisms different from antibiotics, which are safe and less likely to cause bacterial resistance. Antibacterial peptides have significant advantages and extremely broad application prospects, which have the potential to become one of the widely used antimicrobial substances in the food industry. Currently, Nisin is allowed as food preservative. However, the promotion and application of antimicrobial peptides are still limited by high production costs, single antibacterial activity, and poor stability. The use of compound preservative technology and coating preservation technology can effectively improve the antibacterial efficiency by combining antimicrobial peptides with other natural preservatives. In addition, …

Cancer is a disease in which normal cells have become altered such that they divide uncontrollably, ultimately leading to tissue destruction. While efficacious cancer therapies have been developed in recent decades, many of them come with drawbacks such as cost and systemic toxicity. Additionally, solid tumors remain difficult to treat due to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Intratumoral immunotherapy (ITIT) strives to generate effective antitumor immunity by directly administering immunostimulatory adjuvants into tumors to reverse local tumor-mediated immune suppression and generate systemic immune responses against metastases. Intratumoral immunotherapy utilizing in vivo expression of interleukin-12 (IL-12) via plasmid electroporation has been investigated …

Acute lower gastrointestinal GVHD (aLGI-GVHD) is a serious complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Although the intestinal microbiota is associated with the incidence of aLGI-GVHD, how the intestinal microbiota impacts treatment responses in aLGI-GVHD has not been thoroughly studied. In a cohort of patients with aLGI-GVHD (n = 37), we found that non-response to standard therapy with corticosteroids was associated with prior treatment with carbapenem antibiotics and a disrupted fecal microbiome characterized by reduced abundances of Bacteroides ovatus. In a murine GVHD model aggravated by carbapenem antibiotics, introducing B. ovatus reduced GVHD severity and improved survival. These beneficial effects …

Life In The Margins: The Effect Of Immersion/Emersion And Tidal Cycle On The North Atlantic Limpet Patella Vulgata Protein Synthesis Rates, Ignacio Alvarez-Cienfuegos, Benjamin Ciotti, Richard Billington, Paul Sutton, Keiron Fraser
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Biological processes in intertidal species follow tidal rhythms that enhance survival and fitness. Whereas tidal effects on behaviour and metabolic rates have been widely studied, impacts on other key process such as protein synthesis are still poorly understood. To date, no studies have examined the effect of immersion/emersion and tidal cycles on protein synthesis rates (k s). Patella vulgata is an intertidal limpet present in North-Eastern Atlantic rocky shores from high to low shore. Previously reported P. vulgata respiration and heart rate measurements suggest aerobic metabolism is maintained during emersion and growth rates increase from high to low shore, …
