The International Legal Framework Of Oceanic Shipping Of Carbon Dioxide For Permanent Storage, Carolina Arlota, Michael B. Gerrard
The International Legal Framework Of Oceanic Shipping Of Carbon Dioxide For Permanent Storage, Carolina Arlota, Michael B. Gerrard
Faculty Scholarship
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change defines carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) as “a process in which a relatively pure stream of carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial and energy-related sources is separated (captured), conditioned, compressed, and transported to a storage location for long-term isolation from the atmosphere.” Therefore, CCS encompasses a series of steps, at minimum: capturing carbon dioxide, its transportation to a storage site, and its injection into the subsurface for permanent storage. As such, CCS does not refer to any single activity or technology. This Article focuses on the transportation aspect of CCS and, more precisely, …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Co-infection by intestinal helminths and Plasmodium spp. may be common in endemic communities. Several studies have identified a relationship between helminth infection, Plasmodium spp. infection and malaria severity. However, the relationship is not well defined, and results are inconclusive. We analyzed stool samples from a cohort of children with severe malaria enrolled in two hospitals in Uganda from 2014-2017 and asymptomatic community children from the same household or neighborhood and enrolled at the same time, all 6 months to 48 months of age. We investigated if intestinal helminth infection modified risk of severe malaria. We extracted nucleic acids from stool …

Understanding the neurobiology of semantic knowledge is a major goal of cognitive neuroscience. Taxonomic and thematic semantic knowledge are represented differently within the brain's conceptual networks, but the specific neural mechanisms remain unclear. Some neurobiological models propose that the anterior temporal lobe is an important hub for taxonomic knowledge, whereas the TPJ is especially involved in the representation of thematic knowledge. However, recent studies have provided divergent evidence. In this context, we investigated the neural correlates of taxonomic and thematic confrontation naming errors in 79 people with aphasia. We used three complementary lesion-symptom mapping (LSM) methods to investigate how structure …

Reports of overuse and antimicrobial resistance have fuelled some clinicians to adopt alternative wound dressings termed to be non-medicated or non-antimicrobials, which still claim antimicrobial or antibacterial activity. In this PROSPERO-registered systematic review, we evaluated the in vivo clinical evidence for the effectiveness of DACC-coated dressings in chronic, hard to heal wound-related outcomes. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) Framework was adopted as the template in constructing this systematic review. The PICO format (Population [or patients], Intervention, Comparison [control], Outcome/s) was used to identify key clinical questions in determining patient outcomes under two domains (infection control and …

Many coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive individuals exhibit abnormal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity reflecting “brain fog” and mild cognitive impairments even months after the acute phase of infection. Resting-state EEG abnormalities include EEG slowing (reduced alpha rhythm; increased slow waves) and epileptiform activity. An expert panel conducted a systematic review to present compelling evidence that cognitive deficits due to COVID-19 and to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) are driven by overlapping pathologies and neurophysiological abnormalities. EEG abnormalities seen in COVID-19 patients resemble those observed in early stages of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly ADRD. It is proposed that similar EEG abnormalities in …

Suffering As The Way To God, Marjorie Shahani
Suffering As The Way To God, Marjorie Shahani
LMU Theses and Dissertations
As a spiritual director and Christian, I desire to accompany women on their journey to a deeper personal relationship with God holding in tension the suffering Servant on the cross and the hope in the resurrected Christ. I long to illuminate their understanding of self-sacrifice and denial. Participating in Jesus’ suffering on the cross must not lead to neglect of oneself, denial of one’s human dignity, or the tolerance of any form of abuse – physical, emotional or mental. I comprehend the redemptive power in suffering for the love of God, but I also know Christ invites us to rejoice …

Unrealized Potential: South Africa’S Bill Of Inaccessible Rights: What Three Cape Town Human Rights Activist Have To Say About The Adequacy Of Three Clauses In South Africa’S Bill Of Rights, Saylor Wilkes Donaldson
South Africa: Multiculturalism and Human Rights
The South African Constitution is often referred to as the most progressive constitution in the world by both locals and international academics. Its establishment would come after decades of racial abuse and discrimination which called for political and social rights for a population that had been neglected for years. Although, this sentiment quickly comes into question as soon as an individual travels more than ten kilometers outside of the Cape Town city center. This is where informal settlements and their lack of basic necessities such as clean water, proper housing structures, and consistent education become visible. The South African Bill …
The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko
The Approaches And Implications Of English Medium Of Instruction In Nepal’S Private Schools, Vivian Ko
Nepal: Development, Gender, and Social Change in the Himalaya
In this report, I discuss how English Medium of Instruction (EMI) is approached by private schools in Nepal and its implications on larger society. Nepal’s increasing demand for EMI, and thus private schools, has contributed to a variety of social issues including inaccessibility and a dying culture. By situating EMI in Nepal’s education system, I explore how the privatization of schools and the wide implementation of EMI is both a result of neoliberalism and a contributing factor to such ideologies. Observations of EMI classes and non-academic spaces on school grounds, in addition to interviews and focus groups with students and …

Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson
Hatshepsut And Akhenaten: Dualities Of Gender, Religion, And Implementation Of Queer Theory, Sadie Anderson
Theses
This paper discusses 18th Dynasty pharaohs Hatshepsut and Akhenaten and the images they portrayed during their reigns. Hatshepsut, though being female, adhered to the preconstructed image of a traditional male pharaoh while Akhenaten defied the long-established artistic canon in order to create a more androgynous pharaonic identity. Both did this to legitimize their rule, connect themselves to divinity, and interpret the duality of gender innate to Egyptian religion through their iconography. Hatshepsut’s masculine depictions cemented her as the father of the polytheistic Egyptian empire over which she reigned. Akhenaten’s more androgynous representations, on the other hand, portrayed him as both …
Therapeutic Potential Of Ceramide In Cancer Treatment, Weiyuan Wang, Bert Prince, Alexander Thorpe, Timothy Brown, Brian Barth
Therapeutic Potential Of Ceramide In Cancer Treatment, Weiyuan Wang, Bert Prince, Alexander Thorpe, Timothy Brown, Brian Barth
Faculty, Staff, and Students
Ceramides are a family of wax-like lipids that fall under the broader category of sphingolipids. A ceramide is composed of a sphingosine side chain coupled to a fatty acid via an amide linkage. Distinct from complex sphingolipids, the head of ceramide is a simple alcohol rather than a phosphate, phosphocholine, sugar, or more. The fatty acid chains of ceramide can also vary in chain length and degree of saturation. The degree of saturation may determine the biological activity of the ceramide species. Ceramides are highly abundant within the cell membrane of eukaryotic cells and are appreciated for their structural roles …

Infinite Queerness And American Settler Colonialism, Jeremiah A. Ho
Infinite Queerness And American Settler Colonialism, Jeremiah A. Ho
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
What the LGBTQ rights movement needs, especially with regard to legal challenges, is a lasting philosophical shift toward the idea that justice and equality are an infinite game rather than a finite and pragmatic one. This work here will explore why this posture is favorable at this moment—and generally in civil rights work. Beyond connecting queer sacrifice in recent Supreme Court cases to the functioning and maintenance of the American settler colonial project, this Article will posit why a strategy shift toward infinite thinking is increasingly necessary for more resolute work that results in the autonomy and equality of LGBTQ …
Three's A Crowd: Addressing Discrimination Faced By Queer De Facto Parents In Child Custody Standing Proceedings, Shannon E. Callaghan
Three's A Crowd: Addressing Discrimination Faced By Queer De Facto Parents In Child Custody Standing Proceedings, Shannon E. Callaghan
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
In the United States, between five percent and eight percent of adults identify as queer, and as of 2020, fifteen percent of queer couples have children in their households. While recent legal victories have expanded queer rights, family law continues to lag in affording legal recognition to “nontraditional” families. This is particularly problematic for unmarried, queer co-parents who have virtually no legal claims to the children they have raised with their partners. Current standing requirements for custody proceedings treat these de facto parents as legal strangers to their children due to the absence of biological, marital, or adoptive ties. As …

"Deep Learning For Microscope Image Denoising", Nasreen Buhn, Sriya Adunur, Guy Hagen, Jonathan Ventura
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
In order to avoid damaging live cells, optical microscope imaging must be conducted under low-excitation light intensity and/or short exposure times, resulting in low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). Deep learning methods offer an effective solution for removing microscope noise, utilizing algorithms that are able to reconstruct finer features in low SNR images. This research explores the denoising capability of several deep learning methods based on PSNR and SSIM. Tested methods include traditional approaches (BMED), supervised learning (CARE and Restormer), and unsupervised methods (Noise2Fast, N2V, SSD-Unsupervised, and SASSID). The Restormer model, which employs an encoder-decoder transformer architecture and progressive learning, stood out …
Sex Differences In The Association Between Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein And Cognitive Performance In Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer’S Disease, Taryn Gordon
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The rising incidence of Alzheimer’s Disease and its disproportionate prevalence in the female sex has led to a growth in research focused on preclinical Alzheimer’s Disease and the histopathological brain changes. However, limited research has focused on preclinical changes in Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer’s Disease populations and sex differences within these unique populations. This study aimed to address gaps in the literature by examining biological markers of neuroinflammation, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), in preclinical Autosomal Dominant Alzheimer’s Disease mutation carriers and non-carriers, and its relationship with cognitive function and sex. Archival data was utilized from the Colombia-Boston biomarker study of …
An Updated Practical Guide To Taking And Defending Depositions, Gary S. Gildin
An Updated Practical Guide To Taking And Defending Depositions, Gary S. Gildin
Dickinson Law Review (2017-Present)
The deposition offers a singular opportunity to handcuff the deponent to an irreversible script. Consequently, both the attorney taking the deposition and defending counsel must prepare for and conduct the deposition with equal if not greater care than the trial.
Traditionally, lawyers have used the deposition to discover facts relating to the legal elements and the credibility, perception, and recollection of the witness. However, recent breakthroughs in neuroscience as to how the brain makes decisions have revealed a different genre of evidence that will drive how the trier of fact will decide the case. Today an attorney taking a deposition …
Analysis Of Mybl1,Vxn, And Ccne2 Gene Relationships In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Sahia M. Bryant
Analysis Of Mybl1,Vxn, And Ccne2 Gene Relationships In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Sahia M. Bryant
Theses (2016-Present)
Accounting for 15-20% of all breast cancers, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), is the most aggressive subtype, with the worst prognosis. In previous studies, the MYBL1 gene, which is associated with several events that are key to tumor progression, has been identified as a powerful transcriptional activator that is overexpressed in TNBC. In earlier research, our lab knocked down MYBL1 expression in a TNBC cell line and identified a subset of genes impacted by the knockdown process. MYBL1 gene is located on the chromosome 8q locus. In addition to MYBL1 we identified 2 genes, VXN and CCNE2, also located at the …
Analysis Of Isoforms Associaated With The Mybl2 Gene In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Taylor Allen-Boswell
Analysis Of Isoforms Associaated With The Mybl2 Gene In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Taylor Allen-Boswell
Theses (2016-Present)
Nearly every gene exists as transcript variants and protein isoforms. Variations of a particular gene are generated by small nuclear ribonucleoproteins which in many cases remove introns, so that exons can be joined together in varying configurations. Transcript variants are formed, which are then translated into protein isoforms. The resulting transcript variants have substantial sequence similarities; and the isoforms have substantial sequence similarities. Studies show that isoforms generated because of these processes can have different start sites and/or sizes that can lead to generations of different proteins with different biological roles in a cell. The isoforms might have different functions …

MOTIVATION: Integrative analysis of heterogeneous expression data remains challenging due to variations in platform, RNA quality, sample processing, and other unknown technical effects. Selecting the approach for removing unwanted batch effects can be a time-consuming and tedious process, especially for more biologically focused investigators.
RESULTS: Here, we present BatchFLEX, a Shiny app that can facilitate visualization and correction of batch effects using several established methods. BatchFLEX can visualize the variance contribution of a factor before and after correction. As an example, we have analyzed ImmGen microarray data and enhanced its expression signals that distinguishes each immune cell type. Moreover, our …
