Fibonacci Numbers And Symmetry In Tai-Chi Motions, Matthew He

Mathematics Colloquium Series

In this talk, we first briefly review Fibonaccinumbers and its growth and development inmath, science, arts, culture, and nature, followedby an overview of Tao’s thoughts as an energysource of Tai-Chi motion. We then show thatFibonacci numbers are rooted in Tai-Chi motionand demonstrate that golden rectangle simulatesthe core space of Tai-Chi motions, and circular, spiral, and symmetrical motions can be used todescribe Tai-Chi movements. This talk is broadlydivided into the following three parts: 1.FIBONACCI NUMBERS, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 2.TAO’S THOUGHTS, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 3.TAI-CHI: MOTION OF FIBONACCI NUMBERS AND SYMMETRY

Temperature Affects Nest Box Selection, Nest Success, And Nestling Size In A Southeastern Population Of Eastern Bluebirds, Katie Stumpf Oct 2024

Temperature Affects Nest Box Selection, Nest Success, And Nestling Size In A Southeastern Population Of Eastern Bluebirds, Katie Stumpf

Georgia Journal of Science

Given the critical role of temperature in avian reproduction, rising global temperatures will likely impact reproductive success of many bird populations. We examined the effect of nest box temperature, nest box color, entrance orientation, distance to forest cover, and distance to water on net box selection, nest success, and nestling size in eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis) in central Georgia. White painted nest boxes had significantly cooler temperatures than control nest boxes (P < 0.05). However, model selection revealed that eastern bluebird females selected control boxes, despite their overall warmer temperatures. Nest success was associated with year, likely because of high nest predation during the warmer 2022 breeding season (P < 0.05). Nest success was also associated with cooler nest boxes, possibly because incubating females spend more time incubating which can reduce predation risks. Larger nestlings fledged from painted nest boxes, nest boxes with cooler temperatures, and nests from 2021, which we attribute to decreased thermoregulatory demands enabling faster nestling growth in cooler boxes and years. These seemingly opposing results suggest there may be an optimal temperature range where nest box temperature maximizes reproductive fitness while minimizing energetic demands on incubating adults. Determining this temperature range can help target management efforts to ensure specific goals are met.

Stigma Experience Of Men With Eating Disorders: A Scoping Review, Rachael Maloney, Louise Lunney, Olivia-Mari Lennox, Elena Vaughan, Colette Kelly Oct 2024

Stigma Experience Of Men With Eating Disorders: A Scoping Review, Rachael Maloney, Louise Lunney, Olivia-Mari Lennox, Elena Vaughan, Colette Kelly

Journal of Social Care

This scoping review aimed to synthesise the literature concerning the stigma experiences of men with eating disorders. Seven databases were searched using relevant keywords and subject headings. Following deduplication, articles published since 2000 were screened against eligibility criteria. Key information was charted and analysed using descriptive statistics and deductive content analysis. The final sample (n=9) was synthesised under four categories of stigma experiences within the Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework. Internalised stigma was the most prevalent stigma experience across the included studies. This review suggests that men with eating disorders experience stigma in many forms and across various contexts, including …

Albinism In Olivierus Martensii (Karsch, 1879) (Scorpiones: Buthidae), Victoria Tang, Zhenbang Liu

Euscorpius

This is a formal case report for the albinism in Olivierus martensii (Karsch, 1879). Albino phenotype is compared with its normal counterpart in terms of their morphology and behavior by cursory experiments. The examined 7 albino individuals (5 of which were adults) were smaller and more slender than their normal counterparts. However, these quantitative differences were not statistically significant and should be treated with caution due to the low sample size. Their abilities to detect both white light and UV light or UV-excited fluorescence were not significantly undermined, although their tendency to ensure a clear vision through self-cleaning behavior appeared …

Advancements In The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner Measurement Technology For Enhanced Detection Of Harmful Algal Blooms, John J. Langan, Jungyun Bae Oct 2024

Advancements In The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner Measurement Technology For Enhanced Detection Of Harmful Algal Blooms, John J. Langan, Jungyun Bae

Michigan Tech Publications

The Programmable Hyperspectral Seawater Scanner (PHySS) represents a significant breakthrough in monitoring harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically targeting the “Florida red tide” caused by Karenia brevis. By utilizing a Fourth-Derivative Spectral Similarity Index (SI), this study establishes a strong positive correlation between the SI and phytoplankton counts, underscoring the PHySS’s potential for early detection and effective management of HABs. Our findings suggest that the PHySS could act as a predictive tool, offering crucial lead time to mitigate the ecological and economic repercussions of blooms. However, this study also identifies certain limitations of the PHySS technology, such as its inability to …

The genomes of living lungfishes can inform on the molecular-developmental basis of the Devonian sarcopterygian fish–tetrapod transition. We de novo sequenced the genomes of the African (Protopterus annectens) and South American lungfishes (Lepidosiren paradoxa). The Lepidosiren genome (about 91 Gb, roughly 30 times the human genome) is the largest animal genome sequenced so far and more than twice the size of the Australian (Neoceratodus forsteri)1 and African2 lungfishes owing to enlarged intergenic regions and introns with high repeat content (about 90%). All lungfish genomes continue to expand as some transposable elements (TEs) are still active today. In particular, …

Cultivation In Long-Term Simulated Microgravity Is Detrimental To Pyocyanin Production And Subsequent Biofilm Formation Ability Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, K. Z. M. Chen, L. M. Vu, Amy Cheng Vollmer Oct 2024

Cultivation In Long-Term Simulated Microgravity Is Detrimental To Pyocyanin Production And Subsequent Biofilm Formation Ability Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, K. Z. M. Chen, L. M. Vu, Amy Cheng Vollmer

Biology Faculty Works

Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms aggregates known as biofilms. Previous studies have shown that when P. aeruginosa is cultivated in space, thicker and structurally different biofilms are formed than from those grown on Earth. We investigated how microgravity, simulated in a laboratory setting, influenced the growth, colonization, and virulence potentials of a P. aeruginosa PA14 wild-type strain, as well as two surface attachment-defective (sad) mutants altered at crucial biofilm-forming steps: flgK and pelA. Using high-aspect ratio rotating-wall vessel (HARV) bioreactors, P. aeruginosa bacteria were grown to stationary phase under prolonged (6 days) exposure to simulated microgravity or normal gravity …

Examination Of Photoinduced Radicals In Two Crystal Forms Of Triphenylamine Bis-Urea Macrocycles, Md Faizul Islam, Gamage Isuri P. Wijesekera, Anmon J. Sindt, Mark D. Smith, Linda S. Shimizu

Faculty Publications

This study probes two solvates of triphenylamine (TPA) bis-urea macrocycle 1 and their activated structures to evaluate their maximum photoinduced radicals (PIRs), the subsequent decay of the radicals, and their regeneration. The hierarchical assembly of TPAs shows promise in stabilizing less substituted derivatives, potentially expanding the utility of TPAs that lack stabilizing para-substituents. Single crystal structure analysis reveals that host 1 adopts a planar conformation with the two ureas pointing in opposite directions when dimethoxyethane (DME) is encapsulated within the channel. Whereas previously, 1 adopted a bowl-shaped conformation with the two ureas pointing in the same direction (syn …

The role of rare non-coding variation in complex human phenotypes is still largely unknown. To elucidate the impact of rare variants in regulatory elements, we performed a whole-genome sequencing association analysis for height using 333,100 individuals from three datasets: UK Biobank (N = 200,003), TOPMed (N = 87,652) and All of Us (N = 45,445). We performed rare ( < 0.1% minor-allele-frequency) single-variant and aggregate testing of non-coding variants in regulatory regions based on proximal-regulatory, intergenic-regulatory and deep-intronic annotation. We observed 29 independent variants associated with height at P < 6×10-10" role="presentation" style="box-sizing: inherit; display: inline-block; line-height: 0; font-size: 18.08px; font-size-adjust: none; overflow-wrap: normal; text-wrap-mode: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 1px 0px; color: rgb(33, 33, 33); font-family: BlinkMacSystemFont, -apple-system, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, "Fira Sans", "Droid Sans", "Helvetica Neue", sans-serif; position: relative;">6×10−106×10-10 after conditioning on previously reported variants, with effect sizes ranging from -7cm to +4.7 cm. We also identified and replicated non-coding aggregate-based associations proximal to HMGA1 containing variants associated with a 5 cm taller height and of highly-conserved variants in …

The Relationship Between Parental Political Intensity And Gay Individuals' Mental Health, And The Moderation Of Parental Age, Aaron Whipple Oct 2024

The Relationship Between Parental Political Intensity And Gay Individuals' Mental Health, And The Moderation Of Parental Age, Aaron Whipple

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

During periods of heightened political intensity, gay individuals experience increases in discrimination and prejudice, impacting their mental health, making the need for advocacy and support, particularly from parents and guardians, vital. Recent research shows that parent–child relationships can be heavily influenced by politics and the intensity of their political beliefs. Historically, conservative views have been associated with anti-gay sentiment, which can exacerbate gay individuals’ mental health, leading to familial discord, depression, self-harm, and suicide, whereas liberal views have been associated with supporting gay rights and decreasing mental health disparities. However, prior research has not explored the specific role of parental …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The BAF chromatin remodeler regulates lineage commitment including cranial neural crest cell (CNCC) specification. Variants in BAF subunits cause Coffin-Siris syndrome (CSS), a congenital disorder characterized by coarse craniofacial features and intellectual disability. Approximately 50% of individuals with CSS harbor variants in one of the mutually exclusive BAF subunits, ARID1A/ARID1B. While Arid1a deletion in mouse neural crest causes severe craniofacial phenotypes, little is known about the role of ARID1A in CNCC specification. Using CSS-patient-derived ARID1A induced pluripotent stem cells to model CNCC specification, we discovered that ARID1A-haploinsufficiency impairs epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process necessary for CNCC delamination and migration from …

Romi: A Randomized Two-Stage Basket Trial Design To Optimize Doses For Multiple Indications, Shuqi Wang, Peter F Thall, Kentaro Takeda, Ying Yuan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Optimizing doses for multiple indications is challenging. The pooled approach of finding a single optimal biological dose (OBD) for all indications ignores that dose-response or dose-toxicity curves may differ between indications, resulting in varying OBDs. Conversely, indication-specific dose optimization often requires a large sample size. To address this challenge, we propose a Randomized two-stage basket trial design that Optimizes doses in Multiple Indications (ROMI). In stage 1, for each indication, response and toxicity are evaluated for a high dose, which may be a previously obtained maximum tolerated dose, with a rule that stops accrual to indications where the high dose …
