International Journal of Health and Allied Sciences
This case report describes the prosthodontic rehabilitation of a geriatric patient with generalized aggressive periodontitis. The patient was advised to for full extraction. An implant supported hybrid prosthesis with multi-unit abutments was fabricated for the patient who chose a fixed kind of prosthesis. Implants were placed in the maxillary & mandibular arch. Frameworks were waxed, plastic castable abutments were used for casting, denture teeth were waxed to the hybrid framework and a final wax try-in to check and adjust the maxilla-mandibular relationships before processing, the prosthesis was placed. The clinical and radiologic results met expectations.

Scales Of Whiteness And Racial Mixing: Challenging And Confirming Racial Categories, Serin D. Houston
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper examines personal and public portrayals of the self and family articulated by heterosexual mixed-race households living in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It argues that an attention to scale sheds light on how mixed-race partnerships and households both reproduce a racial hierarchy and express shifting racial identities. A focus on the work of whiteness – defined here as an evaluative set of practices and processes that implicitly or explicitly legitimate a static racial hierarchy – in the confirmation of and challenges to racial categories further specifies my claims. I explore seemingly contradictory expressions of race in …

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Maternal obesity during pregnancy is linked to systemic inflammation and elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). In our previous work, we demonstrated that increased maternal IL-6 during gestation impacts intrauterine development in mice. We hypothesized that IL-6-induced inflammation alters gene expression in the developing fetus. To test this, pregnant mice were administered IL-6 or saline during mid-gestation. Newborn mouse kidneys were analyzed using mRNA-seq, miRNA-seq and whole-genome bisulfite-seq (WGBS). A multi-omics approach was employed to quantify mRNA gene expression, miRNA expression and DNA methylation, using …

Experimental Investigation Of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Performance Using Bio-Inspired Blades, Ahmed Elbaz
Mechanical Engineering
Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) are becoming a key player in small wind power applications. Recent research on turbine performance focused on methods to augment turbine performance to secure a more efficient and reliable wind energy conversion system to electrical power. Most of these research works rely on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations given the excessive cost of wind tunnel testing. Many research papers investigated innovative blade shapes in order to improve turbine performance. In the present paper, a new bioinspired, blade shape is proposed to enhance the power output of VAWT. This shape is based on modifying NACA 0018 …

Characterizing The Influence Of Metabolism On Steady State Water Exchange In Yeast As A Potential Mri Diagnostic Biomarker, Samantha Mumford
Characterizing The Influence Of Metabolism On Steady State Water Exchange In Yeast As A Potential Mri Diagnostic Biomarker, Samantha Mumford
Dissertations and Theses
Under conditions of ionic equilibrium with the environment a cell maintains a constant volume yet rapidly exchanges water molecules with the extracellular space. The rate constant for steady state water efflux, kio, can be measured using contrast enhanced magnetic resonance (CE-MR). The active water cycling (AWC) hypothesis is puts forward that kio is primarily influenced by cellular ATP levels and H+ ATPase activity at the cell membrane. Due to the correlation between kio and ATP levels, kio is thought to be a probable MRI biomarker for metabolic diseases such as cancer. Yet, the molecular …

Background: T-cell lymphomas (TCLs) are a group of heterogenous cancers with poor rates and duration of response. There remains a great challenge in risk stratification of these cancers. Cluster of differentiation (CD) 5 has shown prognostic implication in many subtypes of B-cell lymphoma; however, its role in TCLs is not known. Methods: We performed a single-institution retrospective analysis of newly diagnosed patients with TCL. CD5 positivity was determined based on positive results via immunohistochemistry and/or flow cytometry. We used univariate and multivariable analysis of biological factors to assess their association with survival outcomes. Results: A total of 194 patients with …

he mammalian order Primates is known for widespread sexual dimorphism in size and phenotype. Despite repeated speculation that primate sexual size dimorphism either facilitates or is in part driven by functional differences in how males and females interact with their environments, few studies have directly assessed the influence of sexual dimorphism on performance traits. Here, we use a theoretical morphology framework to show that sexual dimorphism in primate crania is associated with divergent biomechanical performance traits. The degree of dimorphism is a significant covariate in biomechanical trait divergence between sexes. Males exhibit less efficient but stiffer cranial shapes and significant …

Whole genome sequences (WGS) enable discovery of rare variants which may contribute to missing heritability of coronary artery disease (CAD). To measure their contribution, we apply the GREML-LDMS-I approach to WGS of 4949 cases and 17,494 controls of European ancestry from the NHLBI TOPMed program. We estimate CAD heritability at 34.3% assuming a prevalence of 8.2%. Ultra-rare (minor allele frequency ≤ 0.1%) variants with low linkage disequilibrium (LD) score contribute ~50% of the heritability. We also investigate CAD heritability enrichment using a diverse set of functional annotations: i) constraint; ii) predicted protein-altering impact; iii) cis-regulatory elements from a cell-specific chromatin …

The presence of somatic mutations, including copy number variants (CNVs), in the brain is well recognized. Comprehensive study requires single-cell whole genome amplification, with several methods available, prior to sequencing. Here we compare PicoPLEX with two recent adaptations of multiple displacement amplification (MDA): primary template-directed amplification (PTA) and droplet MDA, across 93 human brain cortical nuclei. We demonstrate different properties for each, with PTA providing the broadest amplification, PicoPLEX the most even, and distinct chimeric profiles. Furthermore, we perform CNV calling on two brains with multiple system atrophy and one control brain using different reference genomes. We find that 20.6% …

Nonaqueous redox flow batteries often suffer from reduced battery lifetime and decreased coulombic efficiency due to crossover of the redox-active species through the membrane. One method to mitigate this undesired crossover is to judiciously choose a membrane based on several criteria: swelling and structural integrity, size and charge of redox active species, and ionic conductivity. Most research to date has focused on reducing crossover by synthesizing modified redox-active molecules and/or new membranes. However, no standard protocol exists to compare membranes and a comprehensive study comparing membranes has yet to be done. To address both these limitations, we evaluate herein 26 …

Simple Summary
Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is one of the deadliest forms of cancer with limited therapeutic options. The available conventional therapies are highly toxic and often show resistance. Accumulating evidence suggests that dysregulated ribosome biogenesis has been linked to the survival and aggressive phenotypes of many tumor types, including PanCa. Thus, targeting ribosome biogenesis could be a novel approach for suppressing the growth of PanCa. The current study aimed to investigate the anti-cancer efficacy and underlying molecular mechanisms of honey against PanCa. Our results demonstrated that honey induces apoptosis and inhibits the growth and invasive potential of PanCa cells by …
