Developing Accurate And Automated High-Field And Benchtop Nmr-Based Metabolomic Techniques Using Neural Networks, Hayden Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
NMR-based metabolomics is an increasingly important tool for understanding organisms and biological systems; however, data processing is an often-tedious process and access to high-field NMR spectrometers is limited. Conventional data processing for metabolite profiling relies on slow, user-dependent analysis, yet modern artificial intelligence techniques have scantly been explored in quantitative NMR applications despite their industry transforming effects in many major data processing applications. This work aims to develop neural network approaches to fully automate the identification and quantification of metabolites from NMR spectra while increasing speed and throughput compared to conventional analysis. Our initial investigation implements neural networks for the …

Transposable elements (TEs) are crucial for genetic diversity and gene regulation. Current single-cell quantification methods often align multi-mapping reads to either 'best-mapped' or 'random-mapped' locations and categorize them at the subfamily levels, overlooking the biological necessity for accurate, locus-specific TE quantification. Moreover, these existing methods are primarily designed for and focused on transcriptomics data, which restricts their adaptability to single-cell data of other modalities. To address these challenges, here we introduce MATES, a deep-learning approach that accurately allocates multi-mapping reads to specific loci of TEs, utilizing context from adjacent read alignments flanking the TE locus. When applied to diverse single-cell …

Electrocoagulation has attracted significant attention as an alternative to conventional chemical coagulation because it is capable of removing a wide range of contaminants and has several potential advantages. In contrast to most electrocoagulation research that has been performed with nonporous electrodes, in this study, we demonstrate energy-efficient iron electrocoagulation using porous electrodes. In batch operation, investigation of the external pore structures through optical microscopy suggested that a low porosity electrode with sparse connection between pores may lead to mechanical failure of the pore network during electrolysis, whereas a high porosity electrode is vulnerable to pore clogging. Electrodes with intermediate porosity, …
Solicitation By Lawyers: Piercing The First Amendment Veil, Louise L. Hill
Solicitation By Lawyers: Piercing The First Amendment Veil, Louise L. Hill
Maine Law Review
Historically, the legal profession has considered the solicitation of business inappropriate. The profession has articulated this condemnation of solicitation, which developed as a principle of good taste among a small and homogeneous group of practitioners, in the form of specific rules prohibiting its members from engaging in certain forms of conduct. In recent years, the United States Supreme Court has considered various rules that restrict the commercial speech of lawyers. Reviewing these proscriptive rules, the Court struck down categorical bans on lawyer advertising and targeted, direct mail solicitation as violative of the first amendment. Because the free flow of information …

Shell Translucency: A Novel Eggshell Quality Parameter In Broiler Breeders, Duarte Neves, Austin Jasek, Colwayne Morris, Raquel Burin, Kevin Stephens, Marco Rebollo
Proceedings of the Arkansas Nutrition Conference
In the United States, nearly 240 million commercial broiler breeder eggs are incubated weekly with an average hatchability of 79.1% (Third Party Reporting). Between 160 eggs/hen and 125 chicks/hen the loss is considerable. In 2007, an estimated 1% improvement in hatchability would escalate profits by over $25 million to hatcheries and markedly increase profitability in broiler operations (Schaal and Gherian, 2007). In order to tap into top hatchability performances, egg management in commercial hatcheries such as egg storage time and conditions, incubation temperature and humidity, as well as turning frequency are of utmost importance (Vick et al., 1993; Reis et …
