Environment
We are living through significant environmental, social, political, and economic challenges. These challenges have strained our communities and humanbuilt systems, as well as our interconnected habitats, wildlife, and natural systems. Lack of adequate infrastructure to withstand natural disasters and climate change, as well as historical and presentday inequities in resources across neighborhoods, are examples of the multifaceted and interconnected threats contributing to the accelerated loss of our rich biodiversity. This natural abundance is integral to our region’s health, history, and continued prosperity.

Hopea celebica is a species of Dipterocarpaceae that produces strong and durable wood. This species is endemic to Sulawesi Island, where its spread is restricted to specific habitat types in the southern part of the island. The high quality of the wood has exposed this species to high levels of illegal logging and is endangered. However, in the last two decades, the threat of logging to this tree species has ceased to occur. Through field surveys and interviewing of respondents in 6 small FGDs, this study aims to determine the factors behind the cessation of illegal logging activities. We found …

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a major foodborne mycotoxin that poses a significant economic risk to poultry due to a greater degree of susceptibility compared to other agricultural species. Domesticated turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are especially sensitive to AFB1; however, wild turkeys (M. g. silvestris) are more resistant. A lack of functional isoforms of hepatic glutathione S-transferases (GSTs), an enzyme that plays a role in the detoxification of aflatoxin, is suspected as the reason for the increased sensitivity. Previous studies comparing the gene expression of domesticated and wild turkeys exposed to AFB1 identified …

Polytechnic Journal
Intending to predict the multifunctionality of Nickel ferrite in several technological and medical fields, we have prepared nickel ferrite nanostructure by coprecipitation method. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is used to determine the crystalline structure and phase composition of materials by analyzing the pattern of X-rays scattered by the atoms within the material. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) provides information about a material's chemical bonds and functional groups by analyzing how it absorbs infrared light at various wavelengths. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) offers high-resolution images of the material's surface morphology and texture by scanning it with a focused beam of electrons. Transmission …
Election Law And Democratic Theory, James A. Gardner
Election Law And Democratic Theory, James A. Gardner
Contributions to Books
Election law is the body of law by which a society implements its commitment to democracy. Any meaningful evaluation of the suitability or effectiveness of a society’s election law therefore requires some inquiry into the nature of the society’s democratic commitments—the theory or conception of democracy to which it subscribes. Virtually all such theories are rooted in philosophical liberalism but nevertheless come in many varieties. Reconstructing a society’s democratic commitments can be complicated by its failure to articulate or even to reflect upon them. In the United States, that difficulty is compounded by a long history of evolution in American …

Preparation And Efficacy Evaluation Of Chicken Egg Yolk Sourced Igy Against The Venoms Of Cobra, Krait, Russell’S Viper, And Saw-Scaled Viper, Gayathri G
Theses and Dissertations
Envenomation resulting from snakebites is widely recognized as an alarming health risk in tropical and sub-tropical areas. The big four snakes including Naja naja, Bungarus caeruleus, Daboia russelli, Echis carinatus are responsible for most of the envenomation in India. The current therapy for snake envenomation is immunoglobulins, produced from serum or plasma of horses or sheep. To overcome the drawbacks of current antivenom, chicken egg yolk (IgY) antibodies have recently emerged as one of the most promising research avenues.
In this study, the efficacy of chicken egg yolk sourced antisnake venom (ASV) IgY against the big four venoms was evaluated …

Native mass spectrometry (MS) reveals the role of specific lipids in modulating membrane protein structure and function. Membrane proteins solubilized in detergents are often introduced into the mass spectrometer. However, detergents commonly used for structural studies, such as dodecylmaltoside, tend to generate highly charged ions, leading to protein unfolding, thereby diminishing their utility in characterizing protein–lipid interactions. Thus, there is a critical need to develop approaches to investigate protein–lipid interactions in different detergents. Here, we demonstrate how charge-reducing molecules, such as spermine and trimethylamine-N-oxide, enable the opportunity to characterize lipid binding to the bacterial water channel (AqpZ) and …

Acetylcholine (ACh) is thought to play a role in driving the rapid, spontaneous brain-state transitions that occur during wakefulness; however, the spatiotemporal properties of cortical ACh activity during these state changes are still unclear. We perform simultaneous imaging of GRAB-ACh sensors, GCaMP-expressing basal forebrain axons, and behavior to address this question. We observed a high correlation between axon and GRAB-ACh activity around periods of locomotion and pupil dilation. GRAB-ACh fluorescence could be accurately predicted from axonal activity alone, and local ACh activity decreased at farther distances from an axon. Deconvolution of GRAB-ACh traces allowed us to account for sensor kinetics …

Obesity is one of the primary risk factors for osteoarthritis (OA), acting through cross talk among altered biomechanics, metabolism, adipokines, and dietary free fatty acid (FA) composition. Obesity and aging have been linked to cellular senescence in various tissues, resulting in increased local and systemic inflammation and immune dysfunction. We hypothesized that obesity and joint injury lead to cellular senescence that is typically associated with increased OA severity or with aging and that the ratio of omega-6 (ω-6) to omega-3 (ω-3) FAs regulates these pathologic effects. Mice were placed on an ω-6-rich high-fat diet or a lean control diet and …

The endoplasmic reticulum is organized into ordered regions enriched in cholesterol and sphingomyelin, and disordered microdomains characterized by more fluidity. Rabbit CYP1A1 and CYP1A2 localize into disordered and ordered microdomains, respectively. Previously, a CYP1A2 chimera containing the first 109 amino acids of CYP1A1 showed altered microdomain localization. The goal of this study was to identify specific residues responsible for CYP1A microdomain localization. Thus, CYP1A2 chimeras containing substitutions from homologous regions of CYP1A1 were expressed in HEK 293T/17 cells, and the localization was examined after solubilization with Brij 98. A CYP1A2 mutant with the three amino acids from CYP1A1 (VAG) at …

Mental Illness Amongst Incarcerated Individuals And Its Effect On Gaining Employment, Tionna S. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
More than half the correctional population has a mental health disorder (NIH, 2022). Having a mental health disorder can severely interfere in one’s transition back into the community, specifically surrounding their access to employment. This dissertation analyzes the extent to which the mental health of previously incarcerated individuals affects their employment upon release. Results from this study concluded that having a mental health diagnosis did interfere with previously incarcerated individuals’ access to employment, especially if those individuals were black. This dissertation concludes with a discussion of the findings, limitations, contributions, as well as implications for practitioners, policy makers and researchers.
Early Use Of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics In Bipolar Disorder Type I: An Expert Consensus, Martha Sajatovic
Early Use Of Long-Acting Injectable Antipsychotics In Bipolar Disorder Type I: An Expert Consensus, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Introduction: Long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) are not routinely offered to patients living with bipolar disorder type I (BP-I), despite widespread evidence that supports their benefits over oral antipsychotics, particularly in early disease. Methods: A round-table meeting of psychiatrists convened to discuss barriers and opportunities and provide consensus recommendations around the early use of LAIs for BP-I. Results: LAIs are rarely prescribed to treat BP-I unless a patient has severe symptoms, sub-optimal adherence to oral antipsychotics, or has experienced multiple relapses. Beyond country-specific accessibility issues (e.g., healthcare infrastructure and availability/approval status), primary barriers to the effective use of LAIs were identified …

To function effectively, pulmonary surfactant must adsorb rapidly to the alveolar air/water interface but avoid collapse from the surface when compressed to high interfacial densities. Prior studies show that phospholipids in the cylindrical monolayers of the inverse hexagonal (HII) phase adsorb quickly. The monolayers have negative curvature, defined by the concave shape of the hydrophilic face. Formation of the HII structures, however, involves significant disruption of chain-packing. Samples with significant spontaneous curvature, formed in the absence of applied force, may nonetheless have lamellar structures that optimize chain-packing. The experiments here tested whether planar lamellar bilayers formed by phospholipids with negative …

Prostate cancer (PCa) poses a significant global health challenge, particularly due to its progression into aggressive forms like neuroendocrine prostate cancer (NEPC). This study developed and validated a stemness-associated gene signature using advanced machine learning techniques, including Random Forest and Lasso regression, applied to large-scale transcriptomic datasets. The resulting seven-gene signature (KMT5C, DPP4, TYMS, CDC25B, IRF5, MEN1, and DNMT3B) was validated across independent cohorts and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. This signature demonstrated strong prognostic value for progression-free, disease-free, relapse-free, metastasis-free, and overall survival. Importantly, the signature not only identified specific NEPC subtypes, …

Besides many other mutations in known cancer driver genes, mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is characterized by recurrent genetic alterations of important regulators of the phosphoinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) cascade including PIK3CA gains and PTEN losses. To evaluate the biological and functional consequences of these aberrations in MCL, we have introduced transgenic expression of PIK3CA (PIK3CA UP) and performed knockout/knockdown of PTEN gene (PTEN KO/KD) in 5 MCL cell lines. The modified cell lines were tested for associated phenotypes including dependence on upstream B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling (by an additional BCR knockout). PIK3CA overexpression decreased the dependence of the tested MCL on prosurvival …

Voicing Experiences Of Family Members Providing Care To Loved Ones With A Pituitary Condition, Carly Ellicott, Alyson Norman, Sue Jackson
School of Psychology
Introduction: This paper draws upon lived experiences of family members caring for a relative with a pituitary condition. The rationale for the study stems from the crucial role provided by informal, unpaid carers. Yet in the specific domain of pituitary care, they remain overlooked within empirical research. Therefore, the current study aimed to understand 1) the experiences of family members whose loved ones have a pituitary condition and 2) the information and support needs of family members. Materials and methods: Adopting a qualitative participatory approach, the study involved six family members, each of whom provided care for a loved one …

New distribution records and a redescription are presented for Caperhantus cicurius (Fabricius, 1787), a diving beetle endemic to the Cape region of South Africa, which is only distantly related to other Afrotropical dytiscids. We show that the species is much more widely distributed than previously recognized and present details of occupied habitats for the first time. Caperhantus cicurius occurs throughout the winter rainfall zone in South Africa, from Namaqualand to the Eastern Cape Province, particularly in temporary waters in the Fynbos and Succulent Karoo biomes.

Self-monitoring with support, lifestyle modifications, and emotion management improves blood pressure (BP). Patients with hypertension need continual support to modify behaviors, but time pressures limit lifestyle education in primary care settings. Using mixed methods, we aimed to study the feasibility and acceptability of an innovative 6-week program that combined self-monitoring with coping skills and lifestyle education for patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Patients with uncontrolled hypertension interested in lifestyle modifications before intensifying medications were enrolled from primary care clinics. Patients self-monitored emotions, behaviors, and BPs and received education from medical providers and mind-body therapists through shared medical appointments (SMAs) with an …
