Observations Of Co-Nest Building And Spawning In Native And Non-Native Chub Species (Nocomis Spp.) In The Swannanoa River, North Carolina, Patrick Ciccotto
Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
Co-nest building and spawning among individuals of the native population of River Chub (Nocomis micropogon) and among those of an introduced population of Bluehead Chub (N. leptocephalus) observed in the Swannanoa River (French Broad River basin) during Spring 2024 represents the first time such behaviors have been documented between two species of Nocomis. Observations of these behaviors are described and discussed in the context of potential hybridization and the impact of introduced Bluehead Chubs in the French Broad River basin.

The study tested the nematicidal effects of essential oils from Bubonium graveolens and Launaea arborescens on the potato cyst nematode Globodera rostochiens. The chemical composition of the essential oils was analyzed using GC-MS. To determine the concentration that killed 50% of the nematode population (LC50), five concentrations of the essential oils were applied to the tested organisms. The effects of essential oils on the hatching of cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis sp.) eggs in vitro demonstrated a wide variety of effects ranging from no impact to mild, moderate, and strong effects, which increased dramatically with exposure duration and concentration. All the …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
This study presents an in-depth examination of the energy levels and decay properties of Gadolinium (Gd) isotopes with mass numbers (A=156-160), utilizing the Interacting Boson Model-1 (IBM-1) within a broken SU(3) symmetry framework. Through this approach, we systematically calculated and analyzed the energy spectra, B(E2) transition probabilities, quadrupole moments, and potential energy surface (PES) which provided valuable insights into the shape and collective behavior of nuclei, as well as the decay properties of the selected Gd isotopes. The broken SU(3) symmetries provide a good description to the isotopes under study. This comprehensive analysis enhances the understanding of the nuclear structure …

Skin Microbiome: Current Target For Cosmeceuticals, Priyanka Kakkar, Neeraj Wadhwa
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Skin acts as a barrier to the external environment and perform various functions like maintaining internal homeostasis, sensations to touch based stimuli, vitamin D production and defence against foreign pathogens, prevent dehydration. Skin has its own diverse microbiota like bacteria, virus, fungi that is collectively called as skin microbiome. Skin microbiome balance is disturbed (condition called dysbiosis) by both internal and external factors which lead to skin problems like acne, psoriasis, dandruff. It is important to maintain the healthy skin ecosystem. Cosmeceuticals i.e., combination of cosmetic and pharmaceuticals, is a recent trend in the skin care industry where we add …
The Experiences Of Men As A Gender Minority In Early Childhood Workplaces, Julian Laferla
The Experiences Of Men As A Gender Minority In Early Childhood Workplaces, Julian Laferla
Graduate Teacher Education
Men comprise a small percentage of the early childhood education and care workforce worldwide. Men represent only three percent of the preschool workforce in the United States (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor, 2023). A review of the literature revealed challenges men commonly face as a gender minority in a female-dominated field. These challenges include the transgression of traditional beliefs about masculinity, structural barriers like low pay and poor working conditions, and workplace challenges like exclusion, double standards, gatekeeping, and suspicion of sexual threat. Research showed that men can contribute to the field through pedagogic practices that support …

Core concepts are “big ideas” that are central to a discipline, provide frameworks of understanding for disciplinary content, and aid student transfer of learning. Core concept lists have been developed for increasing numbers of higher education STEM disciplines. This mini-review uses physiology and neuroscience core concepts as examples to inform core concept pedagogies in these and other disciplines. The article reviews the development of physiology and neuroscience core concepts and compares the resulting concept lists. It then provides suggestions or “lessons learned” for educators and researchers who wish to utilize core concept pedagogies or who wish to develop core concepts …

The removal or addition of a predator in an ecosystem can trigger a trophic cascade, whereby the predator indirectly influences plants and/or abiotic processes via direct effects on its herbivore prey. A trophic cascade can operate through a density-mediated indirect effect (DMIE), where the predator reduces herbivore density via predation, and/or through a trait-mediated indirect effect (TMIE), where the predator induces an herbivore trait response that modifies the herbivore's effect on plants. Manipulative experiments suggest that TMIEs are an equivalent or more important driver of trophic cascades than are DMIEs. Whether this applies generally in nature is uncertain because few …

Environmental temperatures directly affect physiological rates in ectotherms by constraining the possible body temperatures they can achieve, with physiological processes slowing as temperatures decrease and accelerating as temperatures increase. As environmental constraints increase, as they do northward along the latitudinal thermal gradient, organisms must adapt to compensate for the slower physiological processes or decreased opportunity time. Evolving faster general metabolic rates is one adaptive response posited by the metabolic cold adaptation (MCA) hypothesis. Here we test the MCA hypothesis by examining metabolism of prairie lizard populations across the latitudinal thermal gradient. Our results show that populations from cooler environments have …

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive respiratory illness characterized by long-standing respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation. It is a major contributor to respiratory disease-related deaths and currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of mortality in the United States. Approved pharmacological therapies for the stable disease primarily consist of inhaled short and long-acting bronchodilators, inhaled corticosteroids, azithromycin, and roflumilast. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the management of COPD through the identification of different COPD phenotypes and endotypes, which allows for a more personalized treatment approach. While earlier studies investigating targeted therapies were less promising, …

Despite many efforts to understand and leverage the functional potential of environmental viromes, most bacteriophage genes are largely uncharacterized. To explore novel biology from uncultivated microbes like phages, metagenomics has emerged as a powerful tool to directly mine new genes without the need to culture the diverse microbiota and the viruses within. When a pure computational approach cannot infer gene function, it may be necessary to create a DNA library from environmental genomic DNA, followed by the screening of that library for a particular function. However, these screens are often initiated without a metagenomic analysis of the completed DNA library …

Introduction: The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative-4 (ADNI-4) Engagement Core was launched to advance Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementia (ADRD) health equity research in underrepresented populations (URPs). We describe our evidence-based, scalable culturally informed, community-engaged research (CI-CER) model and demonstrate its preliminary success in increasing URP enrollment.
Methods: URPs include ethnoculturally minoritized, lower education (≤ 12 years), and rural populations. The CI-CER model includes: (1) culturally informed methodology (e.g., less restrictive inclusion/exclusion criteria, sociocultural measures, financial compensation, results disclosure, Spanish Language Capacity Workgroup) and (2) inclusive engagement methods (e.g., the Engagement Core team; Hub Sites; Community-Science Partnership Board).

Neuregulin1 (Nrg1) signaling is critical for neuronal development and function from fate specification to synaptic plasticity. Type III Nrg1 is a synaptic protein which engages in bidirectional signaling with its receptor ErbB4. Forward signaling engages ErbB4 phosphorylation, whereas back signaling engages two known mechanisms: (1) local axonal PI3K-AKT signaling and (2) cleavage by γ-secretase resulting in cytosolic release of the intracellular domain (ICD), which can traffic to the nucleus (Bao et al., 2003; Hancock et al., 2008). To dissect the contribution of these alternate signaling strategies to neuronal development, we generated a transgenic mouse with a missense mutation (V

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) disproportionately impacts Black Americans, who are three times more likely to develop AD. While heart-healthy diets have shown potential in reducing AD risk, research on adapted dietary interventions for Black American communities remains limited. This pilot study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of an adapted brain healthy diet intervention (MIND + SOUL) and explored changes in cardiometabolic risk and cognition. Twenty-nine participants completed the 12-week intervention, which included culturally tailored health education, cooking classes, health coaching, and groceries. Feasibility was assessed by attendance and retention rates, while acceptability was measured by two questionnaires. Participants had a mean …

Background: Neoadjuvant immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have improved survival outcomes compared with chemotherapy in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the impact of actionable genomic alterations (AGAs) on the efficacy of neoadjuvant ICIs remains unclear. We report the influence of AGAs on treatment failure (TF) in patients with resectable NSCLC treated with neoadjuvant ICIs.
Methods: Tumor molecular profiles were obtained from patients with stage I-IIIA resectable NSCLC (American Joint Committee on Cancer seventh edition) treated with either neoadjuvant nivolumab (N, n=23) or nivolumab+ipilimumab (NI, n=21) followed by surgery in a previously reported phase-2 randomized study (NCT03158129). The development and progression of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) depend on genetic abnormalities and on the immunosuppressive microenvironment. We have explored the possibility that genetic drivers might be responsible for the immune cell dysregulation that shapes the protumor microenvironment. We performed a transcriptome analysis of coding and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) during leukemia progression in the Rag2-/-γc-/- MEC1-based xenotransplantation model. The DLEU2/miR-16 locus was found downmodulated in monocytes/macrophages of leukemic mice. To validate the role of this cluster in the tumor immune microenvironment, we generated a mouse model that simultaneously mimics the overexpression of hTCL1 and the germline deletion of the …

(Ctrl + F)Ourth Amendment Searches Of Digital Storage Devices: A Novel Framework, James Mullen
Duke Law Journal
Judges frequently analogize physical precedents when applying Fourth Amendment law to searches of digital storage devices. But these analogies do not map well from physical to digital spaces because they overlook fundamental structures of digital storage. And the stakes are high—courts’ errors lead to oversearches that irreparably harm device owners regardless of the suspects’ guilt or innocence. This Note examines the structure of common digital storage devices and courts’ erroneous attempts to apply Fourth Amendment law to them.
This Note also proposes a novel two-phase framework that would curb oversearch. The framework uses a forensic program to conduct a limited …
