An Extended Conceptualization Of Cultural Intelligence, Alexey V. Semenov
An Extended Conceptualization Of Cultural Intelligence, Alexey V. Semenov
Funded Scholarship
Cultural Intelligence (CQ) has gained prominence as a vital attribute for organizational managers, encompassing their ability to navigate diverse cultural contexts effectively. However, despite its acknowledged significance, the relationships among its dimensions need to be better understood. This paper contributes to the existing CQ literature in two ways. First, we propose a model of CQ that integrates elements from previous conceptualizations, separating the motivational component. Our proposed framework retains the metacognitive, cognitive, and behavioral CQ dimensions but does not assume predefined relationships among them. Instead, we demonstrate that metacognitive CQ positively influences cognitive and behavioral CQ. Second, this paper explores …

Representation learning constitutes a pivotal cornerstone in contemporary deep learning paradigms, offering a conduit to elucidate distinctive features within the latent space and interpret the deep models. Nevertheless, the inherent complexity of anatomical patterns and the random nature of lesion distribution in medical image segmentation pose significant challenges to the disentanglement of representations and the understanding of salient features. Methods guided by the maximization of mutual information, particularly within the framework of contrastive learning, have demonstrated remarkable success and superiority in decoupling densely intertwined representations. However, the effectiveness of contrastive learning highly depends on the quality of the positive and …
Development Of A Novel Beam-Type Neutron Lifetime Experiment Using Ultracold Neutrons, Nicholas Floyd
Development Of A Novel Beam-Type Neutron Lifetime Experiment Using Ultracold Neutrons, Nicholas Floyd
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Precision measurements of the neutron lifetime are critical to tests of the Standard Model. The CKM quark mixing matrix has recently been shown to deviate from unitarity in the top row, motivating the development of alternative extractions of the first element. Complementary measurements of the neutron’s lifetime and decay correlations can be used to accomplish this.
While the reported neutron lifetime by the Particle Data Group is taken from ultracold neutron (UCN) measurements, a separate class of experiments suggest a value in four sigma disagreement, meriting further study. The goal of the UCNProBe experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory is …

Despite the extensive research successes and continuous developments in modern medicine in terms of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment, the lack of clinically useful disease-modifying drugs or immunotherapeutic agents that can successfully treat or prevent neurodegenerative diseases is an ongoing challenge. To date, only one of the 244 drugs in clinical trials for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases has been approved in the past decade, indicating a failure rate of 99.6%. In corollary, the approved monoclonal antibody did not demonstrate significant cognitive benefits. Thus, the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases is increasing rapidly. Therefore, there is an urgent need for creative approaches …

Impact Of A Culturally-Grounded And Interprofessional Approach To Managing Latino/Hispanic Patients At Risk For Or Diagnosed With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Pilot Study, Jahnavi Yalamanchili
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Background: Despite significant progress in diabetes research, there remain significant health disparities between Hispanic/Latino patients in the United States, particularly those with lower socioeconomic status, compared to non-Hispanic white patients. Previous studies have identified potential reasons behind these disparities, including the need for a multifaceted approach that addresses social determinants of health (SDOH) faced by patients. Social cognitive theory (SCT) stipulates that interventions that promote self-management by improving knowledge, self-efficacy, and problem-solving skills can be successful in improving health outcomes. However, there is a paucity of studies that have evaluated an interprofessional approach to providing culturally relevant care, in particular …
Novel Regulators Of Small G Proteins In The Pancreatic Beta Cell, Noah Gleason
Novel Regulators Of Small G Proteins In The Pancreatic Beta Cell, Noah Gleason
Wayne State University Dissertations
Regulation of small GTPases within the pancreatic beta cell is a highly complex and coordinated sequence of protein interactions and post translational modifications. Various families participate in the physiological secretion of insulin in roles ranging from cytoskeletal reorganization to secretory vesicle priming and docking. However the regulatory partners of GTPase function, while studied broadly, lack vital information relating to smgGDS, a protein chaperone of small GTPases to and from the prenylation machinery, and RhoGDI function. Herein these studies are aimed to further our understanding of GTPase regulation and alterations that occur during metabolic stress (glucotoxicity) and related beta cell dysfunction.Data …

A Qualitative Analysis Of Ableist Microaggressions, Jennifer M. Cook, Melissa Deroche, Lee Za Ong
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The phenomenon of microaggressions is well established within the counseling literature, particularly as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, and affectual orientation. However, research related to disability or ableist microaggressions is still in its infancy, so counseling professionals have limited information about experiences of disability and ableist microaggressions. The purpose of this qualitative content analysis was to describe participants’ self-reported experiences with ableist microaggressions. Participants (N = 90) had a diagnosed disability and the majority (91.11%) identified as having two or more nondominant identities beyond their disability. We report two categories and 10 themes. While participants were part of …

Microaggressions are commonplace overt and covert forms of discrimination that convey disparaging messages to individuals who hold marginalized identities, including people with disabilities (PWD). Although PWD are a prevalent nondominant identity group in the United States, little is known about the occurrence of ableist microaggressions in this culturally diverse community, including how ableist microaggressions are experienced based on disability characteristics and other nondominant identities. A sample consisting of 201 PWD completed an electronic survey that examined the occurrence of ableist microaggressions based on visibility of disability, type of disability, and nondominant sociocultural identities. We found that PWD have a moderate …

Comparative Evaluation Of Different Spinal Stability Metrics, Amir Hossein Eskandari, Farshid Ghezelbash, Aboulfazl Shirazi-Adl, Christian Larivière
Études primaires
Direct in vivo measurements of spinal stability are not possible, leaving computational estimations (such as dynamic time series and structural analyses) as the feasible option. However, differences between different stability assessment approaches and metrics remain unclear. To explore this, we asked 32 participants to perform 35 cycles of repetitive lifts with and without load (4/2.6 kg for males/females). EMG signals and 3D kinematics were collected via 12 surface electrodes and 17 inertial sensors, and three dynamical stability measures were computed: short and long temporal and conventional maximum Lyapunov exponents (LyE) and maximum Floquet multipliers (FM). A dynamic subject-specific EMG-assisted musculoskeletal …

Make America Healthy: Reducing High Pharmaceutical Prices Without Reducing Innovation, Srividhya Ragavan
SMU Law Review
Cost of medication in the United States has historically remained one of the highest in the world. The conundrum that the United States has faced in balancing innovation with affordability of life-saving medications is palpable, especially when faced with the reality of patent monopolies conflicting with healthcare obligations. The result is an overflow of issues, which emphasize the need to delineate limits on innovation to balance pharmaceutical novelty with robust public health within the United States. This has increasingly shifted the focus of patent law into the realm of healthcare issues. Naturally, it leads to an inquiry about how best …

This study investigates how rural communities In Oklahoma conceive of their socioeconomic position in larger systems, as well as their resiliency and ability to withstand challenges. Utilizing systems thinking and polycentricity literature, we analyze interviews to construct an understanding of how rural communities perceive themselves, and how this impacts interactions with other communities and governments. Rural communities and their associated challenges are complex and impacted by a range of factors. We find that rural residents also feel this complexity, and understand their issues as products of overlapping systems and structures, and both internal and external factors. Additionally, we observe little …

The adaptive mechanical properties of soft and fibrous biological materials are relevant to their functionality. The emergence of the macroscopic response of these materials to external stress and intrinsic cell traction from local deformations of their structural components is not well understood. Here, we investigate the nonlinear elastic behavior of blood clots by combining microscopy, rheology, and an elastic network model that incorporates the stretching, bending, and buckling of constituent fibrin fibers. By inhibiting fibrin cross-linking in blood clots, we observe an anomalous softening regime in the macroscopic shear response as well as a reduction in platelet-induced clot contractility. Our …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The concept of Net Zero, once considered a significant step towards sustainability, is now seen as outdated and insufficient in addressing climate change and biodiversity loss. To heal our planet, businesses must collectively adopt Regeneration: a holistic, impact-focused, and much more effective Nature Strategy. It's crucial that we recognize other planetary boundaries beyond carbon and transcend a company’s responsibility beyond emissions culpability. By choosing a Nature Pledge over or in addition to a Net-Zero pledge, you will be making a profound commitment to real systemic change and planetary health.

Objective: Do real-time strategy (RTS) video gamers have better attentional control? To examine this issue, we tested experienced versus inexperienced RTS video gamers on multi-object tracking tasks (MOT) and dual-MOT tasks with visual or auditory secondary tasks (dMOT). We employed a street-crossing task with a visual working memory task as a secondary task in a virtual reality (VR) environment to examine any generalized attentional advantage. Background: Similar to action video games, RTS video games require players to switch attention between multiple visual objects and views. However, whether the attentional control advantage is limited by sensory modalities or generalizes to real-life …
Geographies Of Storage, Sayd Randle
Geographies Of Storage, Sayd Randle
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Resource storage has long played a key role in the production of socio-ecological arrangements and economic relations. Even so, storage as a concept has remained somewhat marginal within geographical scholarship, often obscured by an analytical focus on the dynamics of movement. Reviewing recent works from geography, science and technology studies, and anthropology that center sites and practices of storage, this essay elaborates the diverse ways in which storage arrangements mediate resource circulation and the production of space. This literature demonstrates that thinking systematically with storage can illuminate a range of novel temporal, material, and value entanglements in-the-making, pointing to potentially …

There has been continuous and growing interest in edible insects. Worldwide, various levels of insect farming are emerging, ranging from small domestic farms to vertical farms reaching heights of 36 meters, accommodating several million growing insects. The appeal of insects lies in their ecological benefits, as they contribute to the valorization of unde-rutilized organic residues while requiring minimal space and water. The selection of insect species is influenced not only by their biology and behavior but also by local preferences and customs, varying with the scale of production and geographi-cal location. This review article aims to provide an updated overview …

With the ongoing global anthropogenic climate change, a silent war rages in forests, the lungs of the earth. Invasive pathogens and insect pests are decimating native trees, compromising ecological function, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. Many of the processes surrounding successful biotic invasions are broad and have been previously analyzed (Hobbs et al., 2006; Blackburn et al., 2011). For invasive insect pests and pathogens, globalization, the rise in human population and associated environmental disturbances are recognized as fundamental drivers of introduction of propagules of non-native species to novel environments. Superior tolerance of extreme climate environments, in particular temperature, is also associated …

The Ubiquitin Specific Peptidase 22 (USP22), a component of the Spt-Ada-Gcn5 Acetyltransferase (SAGA) histone modifying complex, is overexpressed in multiple human cancers, but how USP22 impacts tumorigenesis is not clear. We reported previously that Usp22 loss in mice impacts execution of several signaling pathways driven by growth factor receptors such as erythroblastic oncogene B b2 (ERBB2). To determine whether changes in USP22 expression affects ERBB2-driven tumorigenesis, we introduced conditional overexpression or deletion alleles of Usp22 into mice bearing the Mouse mammary tumor virus-Neu-Ires-Cre (MMTV-NIC) transgene, which drives both rat ERBB2/NEU expression and Cre recombinase activity from the MMTV promoter resulting …

The Von-Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene, acting as a tumor suppressor, plays a crucial role in the tumorigenesis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Approximately 90% of individuals with advanced ccRCC exhibit somatic mutations in the VHL gene. Belzutifan, orally administered small-molecule inhibitor of hypoxia-induced factor-2α, has demonstrated promising efficacy in solid tumors associated with germline loss-of-function mutations in VHL, including ccRCC. However, its impact on cases with somatic or sporadic VHL mutations remains unclear. Here, we present 2 cases where belzutifan monotherapy was employed in patients with advanced ccRCC and somatic loss-of-function mutations in VHL. Both patients exhibited a swift …

Introduction: Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii)-infected livestock and wildlife have been epidemiologically linked to human Q fever outbreaks. Despite this growing zoonotic threat, knowledge of coxiellosis in wild animals remains limited, and studies to understand their epidemiologic role are needed. In C. burnetii-endemic areas, ticks have been reported to harbor and spread C. burnetii and may serve as indicators of risk of infection in wild animal habitats. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare molecular techniques for detecting C. burnetii DNA in ticks. Methods: In total, 169 ticks from wild animals and cattle in wildlife conservancies in northern Kenya …
