A Wasteside Story: Establishment And Evolution Of A Wastewater Surveillance Lab, Through The Pandemic And Beyond, Syed Shahrukh Hyder
A Wasteside Story: Establishment And Evolution Of A Wastewater Surveillance Lab, Through The Pandemic And Beyond, Syed Shahrukh Hyder
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Wastewater based epidemiology is a fast growing and practical solution to monitor the spread of disease within a population. As the COVID-19 pandemic grounded the world to a standstill, methods to monitor its spread and prepare appropriate responses became vital to begin the return to normalcy. Such was the case in universities around the world where the campus and surrounding community were vital in fulfilling the educational mission in the face of a generational health crisis. The population in a midsize higher educational institute such as Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a broad mix of on-campus and off campus students, …
The Energetics Of Seasonality In Wild Diademed Sifaka (Propithecus Diadema): A Technical And Biological Validation Of Fecal Triiodothyronine Radioimmunassay, Casey Farmer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The energetic state of an animal has vital consequences for its fitness, but it can be difficult to detect through behavioral observations. The development of techniques to determine an animals’ energetic state non-invasively would allow conservation planners to rapidly assess the energy balance and conservation potential of individuals, groups, and populations. Thyroid hormones like triiodothyronine (T3) regulate and reflect metabolic state in mammals. T3 is a non-invasive biomarker that can be detected in feces and could potentially be used for this purpose. I perform the first validation of a commercially available T3 radioimmunoassay designed for humans on a wild strepsirrhine …

Pathology And Diagnosis In Inflammatory-Related Diseases: Covid-19 And Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Zane Russell Lacasse
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Chronic inflammation and dysfunctional inflammatory responses are believed to be contributing factors to the severity of many diseases. Since the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), it has been recognized that levels of inflammatory markers and the severity of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) cases are closely related. The work within this dissertation begins with establishing an alternative platform for the diagnosis of COVID-19 and explores ways to enhance the diagnostic utility of this platform. An alternative route for COVID-19 diagnosis was explored using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS). The platform utilizes a non-invasive sampling technique …

Mixed Mechanisms Of Multi-Site Phosphorylation, Suha Jayyousi Dajani
Mixed Mechanisms Of Multi-Site Phosphorylation, Suha Jayyousi Dajani
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Multi-site phosphorylation is an important mechanism in cell biology that regulates protein function and activity. It also plays a critical role in a wide variety of cellular processes that control intra-cellular signaling. Studies on mono- and dual-site phosphorylation have been conducted theoretically and experimentally by researchers. However, there is little research on triple-site and multi-site mixed mechanism phosphorylation.
The aim of this research is to study and identify the number of positive steady states (multistationarity) in a mathematical model of a triple-site mixed mechanism, processive and distributive, phosphorylation network. This research is accomplished by means of ordinary differential equations, Jacobian …

On The Ground And From Above: A Multi-Factor Analysis Of The Direct And Indirect Drivers Of Tallgrass Prairie Small Mammal Communities, Erin Rowland-Schaefer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Tallgrass prairies are among the most globally threatened ecosystems, with only one percent of the historical extent remaining in Illinois. Prairie restoration is an essential strategy to preserve biodiversity and reestablish threatened species. Practitioners use management tools to shift the landscape context of prairie restoration sites, such as prescribed fire and land cover change. Managers can also impact the landscape connectivity and edge proximity of certain areas through the use of mowed driving lanes. The effects of these factors on small mammals, which are central in tallgrass prairie food webs and relevant to human health and restoration success, are not …

Effort Of Reproducibility: Metrics, Methods, And Models To Navigate The Landscape Of Reproducible Research, Akhil Pandey Akella
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Validating scientific claims is an elaborate process that involves researchers investing considerable time and effort to discover the validity of claims. It involves repeatability, reproducibility, and replicability, where each subsequent step requires increased effort and time. With the evolving nature of computational experiments and the exponential pace at which scientific publications are disseminated, researchers find it challenging to devote time, energy, and resources to assess claims made in papers of interest. Preemptive signals for reproducible effort can be helpful to researchers in filtering academic works of interest, thereby allowing them to adjust efforts based on need. Through this research, I …

A Comparison Of Academic Achievement And Psychological Symptoms In Homeschooled And Traditionally Schooled Children: Accounting For Demographic And Family Characteristics, Lauren Elizabeth Hauck
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The prevalence of homeschooling is increasing, especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, methodologically strong research examining how children's well-being may differ based on their schooling type (i.e., homeschooled vs. traditionally schooled) is rare. This study is a response to a call for advancing the methodological rigor and expanding our understanding of family contributions to differences between homeschooled and traditionally schooled children’s adjustment. Thus, the study aims to determine if differences between homeschooled and traditionally schooled (i.e., attending public school) children’s academic and emotional adjustment are present after accounting for both family demographic characteristics and parenting and home …

Ascertaining A Biochemical Approach To Chlorophyll D Biosynthesis In Acaryochloris Spp., Rashmi Shivni
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Photosynthesis is one of the most abundant metabolic systems on Earth, and specifically, oxygenic photosynthesis primed the planet for complex, multicellular life. The hallmark of modern oxygenic photosynthesis is the photopigment chlorophyll a found in nearly all oxygenic phototrophs as their primary photopigment in their photosynthesis pathways. There are also many organisms that tap into a variety of chlorophylls to extend the energetic limits of photosynthesis, which are largely found as accessory pigments. One genus of cyanobacteria, Acaryochloris, has garnered attention for the ability to undergo photosynthesis by harnessing the far-red part of the visible light spectrum using chlorophyll d …

Expressive Writing Rooted In Self-Determination Theory: An Intervention For Racial Trauma, Diana A. Robinson
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Understanding the impact of racial discrimination is not a new endeavor in the field of psychology. However, research utilizing a trauma-focused lens to evaluate the negative mental health outcomes in the aftermath of racial discrimination is only in its infancy. In addition to depression, anxiety, and substance use, recent research has linked racial discrimination to negative mental health outcomes that mirror that of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although many researchers have identified the negative effects of racial discrimination, few studies have examined intervention approaches designed to reduce the negative impact of racial discrimination. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is a comprehensive theory …
Reinterpreting Fort Ancient Plant Relationships Through Native Science And Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Bailey Rae Raab
Reinterpreting Fort Ancient Plant Relationships Through Native Science And Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Bailey Rae Raab
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Paleoethnobotanical analyses over the past several decades have shed light on subsistence practices, agricultural strategies, and environmental interactions of members of the Fort Ancient culture, an Indigenous society that thrived in the Ohio Valley from 1000 to 1650 CE. Largely absent from these conversations, however, are discussions of non-food uses of plants or considerations of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK). By combining multiple different sources of knowledge, a more holistic view of people-plant relationships within the Fort Ancient culture may be established, one that allows us to better understand these relationships in the past and present. In this thesis, I synthesize …

An Environmental Isolate Of Pseudomonas, 20ei1, Reduces Aspergillus Flavus Growth In An Iron-Dependent Manner Affecting The Expression Of Numerous Genes, Elizabeth Marion Wyman
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Aspergillus flavus is an opportunistic pathogenic fungus that infects oilseed crops worldwide. When colonizing the plants, it produces mycotoxins, including carcinogenic compounds such as aflatoxins. Mycotoxin contamination results in an important economic and health impact. The design of new strategies to control A. flavus colonization and mycotoxin contamination is paramount. In this study, we identified a promising new isolate of Pseudomonas spp., 20EI1, and observed that it is able to reduce the growth of A. flavus AF70. Furthermore, we determined that this growth inhibition is iron-dependent. To further elucidate the nature of this bacterial-fungus interaction, we performed metabolomics and transcriptomics …

Trajectory Of Infant Emotion Regulation Strategies And Negative Affect And Associations With Toddler Externalizing Problems, Sabrina D. Ung
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Previous research recognizes the critical role played by child emotion regulation (ER), the regulatory component of temperament, and negative emotionality (i.e., the tendency to experience negative emotions such as fear, sadness, anger, and frustration) in emotional and behavioral functioning throughout the lifespan. Poor ER and high negative affect in early childhood are linked to impulsive and aggressive behaviors, internalizing behaviors, and lower cognitive functioning. However, few studies have investigated how specific ER strategies and negative affect change across infancy by employing latent growth modeling. Additionally, existing work has neglected to examine the growth trajectory of escape behaviors across infancy as …

Dna I-Motifs: Biophysical Characterization And Structure-Property Correlation As Foundation For Functional Material Design, Alexander Minasyan
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Over the past decades, nucleic acids have emerged as crucial frameworks with significance in biological systems and functional material engineering. Cytosine-rich deoxyribonucleotide sequences can form quadruplex structures a.k.a. i-motifs. Recently, i-motifs have attracted scientific interest in biological and material design areas.
In this work, we systematically investigate an effect of structured and unstructured modifications such as hairpins, stems, loops and overhangs on the kinetic and thermodynamic properties of DNA i-motifs. We demonstrate that the modifications can influence i-motif’s stability and folding/unfolding rates: thus, double stranded stems and hairpins are the best at stabilizing i-motifs and increasing kinetic rates of folding. …

Re-Feminizing The Divine: Understanding The Cultural Constructs Of Gender And Sexuality In A Church-Based Christian Community, Cameron K. Thomas
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Historically, Christianity has sought to maintain rigid separation between men and women. Christianity often views women as secondary to men, particularly in relation to authority under Jesus Christ. These ideals have led to the restrictions of rights and roles of people who choose not to adhere to strictly defined or enforced gender roles. For this ethnography, I examined one church community; namely Barbwire Baptist Church in northern Illinois and how its members used scripture and doctrine beyond simply worship to reinforce norms and expectations of self and others regarding gender and sexuality. I draw on scholarship in gender studies, and …
Motivation, Engagement, And The Student-Teacher Relationship As Predictors Of Academic Outcomes, Courtney Weaver
Motivation, Engagement, And The Student-Teacher Relationship As Predictors Of Academic Outcomes, Courtney Weaver
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Motivation and engagement have long been studied in educational literature as factors that contribute to student academic achievement. The student-teacher relationship has also gained attention as a factor that exerts influence on students’ performance in the classroom. Models that consider context, or the ways in which these student- and teacher-level factors work together, are lacking in the literature. The current study employed an ecological systems framework with concepts from two related theories, attachment and self-determination, to investigate the roles of motivation, engagement, closeness and conflict in the student-teacher relationship as influences on student academic outcomes. Data for the current study …

Are Elaeagnus Umbellata Invasions Limited By Microbial Interactions?, Cody Anderson Leverette
Masters Theses
Mutualistic interactions with soil microbes are a key component of plant invasions. Mutualists such as ectomycorrhizal fungi and Rhizobia bacteria often limit invasive plant establishment and performance, but the role of nitrogen-fixing Frankia bacteria in invasions remains largely unexplored. In this study, I quantified the net effects of positive and negative plant-soil feedbacks, including Frankia nodulation, on invasive Elaeagnus umbellata (autumn olive; hereafter AO) seedling performance and traits at varying distances from focal shrubs using live soil and sterilized soil. The expectation was that seedling performance would decrease with further distance from shrubs as Frankia abundance decreased. Contrary to expectations, …
