Telomeres Are Shorter In Portuguese Obese Adults, Catarina Duarte, Maria Teresa Braz, Ana Marques-Ramos, José Silva-Nunes, Luisa Veiga, Miguel Brito

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Obesity is a clinical condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue with an increased risk of developing illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. In obesity, the secretion of proinflammatory adipokines contributes to oxidative stress that can lead to a decline in the length of telomeres. Telomeres are structures of repetitive sequences delimiting the chromosomes, that plays a crucial role in maintaining their integrity and stability and, thus, its shortening is associated with cellular senescence and possible apoptosis. Although some studies indicate that obesity is associated with shorter telomeres, others contradict this data. Accordingly, the …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Liver transplantation is the last life-saving solution for patients with end stage liver disease. The discrepancy between waiting list and available organs has led to the appearance of extended donation criteria and the development of several scores (Child-Pugh score, MELD score, DRI score, SOFT score), in order to find the most suitable donor-recipient match. But none of these scores can predict survival after transplantation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has recently been shown as an excellent tool for the study of the liver and comes in this aid with its various methods (random forest, artificial neural networks, decision tree, Bayesian networks, and …

Giant Adrenal Myelolipomas: A Literature Review, Mircea Hogea, Anda Hogea, Marius Moga, Roxana Dragomir, Simona Grigorescu, Bogdan Socea

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Myelolipomas are described as small tumors, with some authors referring to sizes less than 4 cm in diameter. However, when greater than 10 cm, myelolipomas are labeled as giant tumors and thus, have a definite indication for surgical resection. Myelolipomas represent a small percentage of adrenal tumors. Giant myelolipomas are usually discovered incidentally during imaging studies performed for other conditions. They are often slow-growing and may reach sizes that significantly distort the anatomy of the affected area. Despite their large size, they are usually benign and do not spread to other parts of the body. Adrenal myelolipoma is a benign …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Primary root canal infection is a dynamic process. All species of oral microbiota have comparable abilities to establish in the root canals of necrotic teeth. The essential ecological factors in their biological selection are nutrient availability, anaerobic environment and bacterial interactions. In chronic apical periodontitis, all selected microflora residing in the long-term infected habitat of root canals system are synergistic, and each of them can play the role of an endodontic pathogen. Microorganisms living in the root canal system of pulpless teeth progressively reach through anatomical communications to the periodontal ligament where, sooner or later, they cause the inflammatory and …

Long-Term Survival After Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer, Joshua Keefer, Mark Cooper, Toni Pacioles, Amanda Arrington

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma is an aggressive cancer with poor outcomes regardless of resection and treatment. The 5-year survival rate is less than 10%. Even with proper resection of the primary tumor, there remains a high likelihood of recurrence within 20 months. This is the case of a patient who was diagnosed with pancreatic adenocarcinoma 7 years ago. This patient underwent resection of the primary tumor along with chemotherapy and radiation. Two recurrences, located in the lung, have both been resected. This case highlights the importance of prompt resection and regular surveillance to monitor for additional metastases.

Developing Thick Skin: Pediatric Eczema In Vulnerable Communities And Fda Regulation Of Cosmetic Products, Abayomi Jones Md, Jd

Journal of Law and Health

Eczema is a common yet serious inflammatory skin condition affecting millions of children in the United States. Dark skin and/or African-American ethnicity are risk factors for increased eczema severity, most likely due to systemic racism expressed as lower socioeconomic status, increased environmental toxin exposure, decreased access to adequate medical care, and infrequent implementation of early intervention practices. Skin-directed management of eczema for caregivers is critically important for improving clinical outcomes of children with eczema. Skin-directed management of eczema includes avoidance of allergens and appropriate moisturization of skin, which warrants evaluation of cosmetic products like lotions, creams and oils essential for …

The Future Of Human Germline Genome Editing: Analyzing He Jiankui’S Experiment, Amanda Bolton

Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work

When He Jiankui announced the births of twins Lulu and Nana, the first genome-edited babies, the scientific community responded in an uproar, raising questions about the implications of human germline genome editing (GGE). This paper examines the intricate medical, ethical, and social aspects of Jiankui's experiment. Advocates argue that GGE could eradicate genetic disorders and enhance disease resistance, particularly targeting diseases like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) through techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9. However, critics emphasize ethical concerns relating to the potential for eugenics, unintended genetic consequences, and the autonomy of future generations. Off-target mutations could lead to permanent problems, as modifications …

Art And Anatomy: Influence Of Combined Studies During The Italian Renaissance And Today, Sylvie Bechtold

Saint John’s Preparatory School Student Work

In the sixteenth century, the disciplines of art and anatomy provided valuable insights to one another. This paper explores the question: in what ways did the intertwined studies of art and anatomy during the Italian Renaissance contribute to advancements in each field, and what influence does this still have on studies today? First, to accurately portray humans in art, artists had to turn to dissection as a way to improve their knowledge of the human body. Some artists who used dissections were Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. One resulting advancement was how da Vinci’s anatomical notes were later published to …

Can We Use Judgement Bias To Assess The Welfare Of Fish In Aquariums And Zoos?, Culum Brown

Animal Sentience

This commentary examines the potential of tests of judgment bias to assess fish welfare in aquariums and zoos. Judgment bias offers a non-invasive approach to interpreting affective states in animals, using cognitive responses to ambiguous stimuli as indicators of mental wellbeing. Despite the constraints of captive environments—such as limited handling and species diversity in exhibits—recent adaptations of judgment-bias protocols make them suitable across taxa, including fishes. Collaborations with progressive zoos and aquariums could facilitate this research, based on the shared goal of enhancing animal welfare and promoting public education.
