A Comparison Of Muscle Function Between Female And Male Mice With A Deletion To The Pevk Region Of Titin, Amelia Adsen
A Comparison Of Muscle Function Between Female And Male Mice With A Deletion To The Pevk Region Of Titin, Amelia Adsen
Scripps Senior Theses
Titin, the third most abundant filament in muscle, serves many roles. It underlies muscle stiffness and functions as a signaling hub particularly during muscular growth. The PEVK region of titin contributes to muscle stiffness and is suspected to play a role in hypertrophic signaling. Most skeletal muscle studies have only used males, leaving a need to include females and investigate muscle physiology sex differences. To investigate sex differences in these functions, soleus muscles from mice with a deletion to the PEVK region (Ttn∆112-158) and wild type (WT) mice around 100 days old were extracted and attached to an …
Preventive Genetic Screening: Genetics And Ethics, Elena Vinton
Preventive Genetic Screening: Genetics And Ethics, Elena Vinton
Scripps Senior Theses
For completion of my dual thesis at Scripps College in Biology and Bioethics, I analyzed the feasibility of preventive genetic screening both ethically and genetically. Because each discipline approaches academic inquiry differently, I decided to ask two sequential questions: (1) How are variants analyzed in preventive genetic screening? (Biology) (2) Do patients who undergo preventive genetic screening have the ‘right not to know’ their genetic status – including medically actionable genetic information? (Bioethics). I have separated my ethical and biological inquiries into two sections. The first section is an ethical inquiry into the justification of the ‘right not to know’ …
What's Up With White Women?: Anti-Feminist Resistance To Second-Wave Feminism And The Rise Of The Conservative Woman, Sadie N. Matz
What's Up With White Women?: Anti-Feminist Resistance To Second-Wave Feminism And The Rise Of The Conservative Woman, Sadie N. Matz
Scripps Senior Theses
A staggering number of White women voted for Trump in 2016. Why did this demographic, whose racial and gender identity so closely resembled that of the Democratic candidate, deny themselves descriptive representation in the Oval Office? A closer look at the political history of feminism and anti-feminism reveals that these results should not have been surprising. The sexual liberation movement of the 1960s, the fight over the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, and the rise of neoliberalism in the 1980s cultivated an environment that made political conservatism attractive to White women of the 20th century, priming White women …
Nitrate Contamination In Two California Groundwater Basins: What Creates Disparities?, Catherine Protiva
Nitrate Contamination In Two California Groundwater Basins: What Creates Disparities?, Catherine Protiva
Scripps Senior Theses
Nitrate contamination is a major problem within California groundwater basins. A form of nitrogen, nitrates leach into groundwater aquifers from the surface where they remain for many decades. The most common source for the contaminant is agricultural sources like nitrogen fertilizer. Consequently, the problem is concentrated in regions of the state with a history of large-scale agricultural production. When water is pulled from contaminated basins and used as drinking water, the nitrates can cause serious negative health consequences, most commonly methemoglobinemia, also known as blue baby syndrome. In this thesis, I will examine what factors contribute to a region’s ability …
The Effect Of Light Intensity On Wolf Spider Foraging, Julia Amoroso
The Effect Of Light Intensity On Wolf Spider Foraging, Julia Amoroso
Scripps Senior Theses
Light is of primary importance to most living organisms and most of the Earth’s natural processes. However, with rapidly expanding urbanization, humans have substantially impacted light metrics through the increase of artificial light. Artificial light pollution has been found to have a variety of behavioral and physiological effects on different organisms. However, less is understood about how light impacts community-scale interactions between different trophic levels. Here, we examined the influence of light exposure on nocturnal wolf spider (Schizocosa myccooki) foraging and interaction with red runner cockroach prey (Blatta lateralis). Of equal interest as the study …
Black Maternal Healthcare: The Impact Of Black Doulas On Pregnant Black Women, Andrea M. Siame
Black Maternal Healthcare: The Impact Of Black Doulas On Pregnant Black Women, Andrea M. Siame
Scripps Senior Theses
Pregnancy disproportionately puts the lives of Black women at risk, causing stress, mistrust, and discomfort to be integral aspects of their perinatal experiences. This stress, mistrust, and discomfort is rooted in Black women’s understanding of the structural racism embedded in the healthcare system. In order for Black women’s psyche to be adequately cared for during their pregnancy, they need perinatal support that places Black feminist theories into practice in their support of Black women. This means that it is necessary to provide support that is rooted in reproductive justice, giving autonomy to Black women during their pregnancy. This support can …
Parasite Prevalence And Innate Immunity In Mud And Musk Turtles, Nicole Beckett
Parasite Prevalence And Innate Immunity In Mud And Musk Turtles, Nicole Beckett
Honors Program Theses
Turtles are being infected by both ectoparasites (typically leeches) and endoparasites (typically blood parasites). It is unknown what the parasite intensity is of wild Central Floridian turtles is, and what effect this parasite load has on them. In order to determine these factors wild turtles (Sternotherus odoratus, Kinosternon baurii, and Kinosternon subrubrum) were caught from two locations, Mead Botanical Gardens, and Lake Virginia. Hoop traps were used to catch the turtles, which were then sampled and released. Captured turtles went through a series of measurements as well as a blood draw before release. Blood parasite levels were taken from the …
Plant Root Hair Adhesion Mediated Through Variation In Sodium Ion Concentration, Natasha Mulenga
Plant Root Hair Adhesion Mediated Through Variation In Sodium Ion Concentration, Natasha Mulenga
Honors Program Theses
This study investigates the effects of sodium ion (Na+) concentration on the adhesion of Brassica Rapa root hairs using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Plant root hair adhesion to soil particles plays a crucial role in anchoring plants and facilitating nutrient uptake. Previous research has shown that calcium ions (Ca2+) cross-link pectin molecules in the cell wall, increasing rigidity and reducing adhesion. As Na+ binds to pectin without cross-linking, we expected that root hairs exposed to sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions would exhibit longer adhesive interactions and similar binding forces compared to those exposed to calcium chloride (CaCl2) solutions of equal concentrations. …
Pcb Remediation In Transitional Floodplain Forests Along The Housatonic River, Soleil Laurin
Pcb Remediation In Transitional Floodplain Forests Along The Housatonic River, Soleil Laurin
Scripps Senior Theses
Human development affects natural environments in more ways than climate change, from the introduction of nonnative species and deforestation to pollution and urbanization. This is a case study examining the effects of PCB remediation on transitional floodplain forest along the Housatonic River in Western Massachusetts. The Housatonic River had previously been contaminated with PCBs and portions had been remediated. This study aims to determine the effects this remediation had on transitional floodplain forests, as well as provide a preliminary biodiversity assessment for sites that are planned to be remediated of PCBs by the Environmental Protection Agency. The study was carried …
Female Titin Mutant Mice Outperform Young And Old Males, Reese Ger
Female Titin Mutant Mice Outperform Young And Old Males, Reese Ger
Scripps Senior Theses
Exercise performance is widely believed to generally be maximal among young males. However, little research has been conducted to investigate the impact of sex or age on muscle performance. This study investigated the effects of sex and age on forelimb and all limb grip strength performance in wildtype and titin mutant mice. Titin is the largest known protein, with known involvement in muscle function. The mice in this study were Ttn∆112-158 with a 75% deletion to the PEVK region of titin. Based on limited existing research, we hypothesized that wildtype mice would outperform all Ttn∆112-158 mice, males would outperform females …
Synthetic Neuroactive Steroids Targeting Gaba-A Receptors As A Potential Therapy For Contraceptive-Associated Mood Disorders, Alexandria A. Davis
Synthetic Neuroactive Steroids Targeting Gaba-A Receptors As A Potential Therapy For Contraceptive-Associated Mood Disorders, Alexandria A. Davis
Scripps Senior Theses
4-10% of women who use hormonal oral contraceptives (HOCs) discontinue use after experiencing symptoms of anxiety, irritability, and depression in the first 3 months of administration. Previous studies have acknowledged a relationship between HOCs and emotional dysregulation but have not identified mechanisms by which HOCs have this effect. As a result, effective treatment options for HOC-induced mood disorders are lacking. Current theories implicate combined-HOCs, particularly those containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel (EE-LNG), in reducing neuroactive steroid levels. Specifically, HOC users show decreases in allopregnanolone, a positive allosteric modulator associated with neuronal inhibition and emotional regulation. The objective of this study …
Living In A Land East Of Eden: Non-Teleological Thinking And Steinbeck's Last Theory Of Man, Erika Schwerdfeger
Living In A Land East Of Eden: Non-Teleological Thinking And Steinbeck's Last Theory Of Man, Erika Schwerdfeger
Scripps Senior Theses
This essay undertakes a critical reevaluation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel East of Eden, the author’s longest, most ambitious and potentially most misunderstood work of fiction. Drawing on excerpts from the eclectic nonfiction volume The Log from the Sea of Cortez, as well as the writer’s personal correspondence and journal entries, this thesis traces the influence of what Steinbeck called “non-teleological thinking” on this novel and on its peculiar brand of humanism, natural philosophy, religiosity and morality. East of Eden is best understood in light of Steinbeck’s abiding interest in and commitment to the natural sciences, particularly marine biology, and …
Serving C*Nt: An Intersectional Historical Look At The Reclamation Of A Taboo Word, Dominique Godinez
Serving C*Nt: An Intersectional Historical Look At The Reclamation Of A Taboo Word, Dominique Godinez
Scripps Senior Theses
While the word cunt has been part of reclamation projects for over fifty years in the United States, particularly in the last year (2023) on social media platforms, the revalued word has gained popularity. With increased usage of a slur historically used against women, we’re left to wonder if reclamation is appropriate and who is participating in these processes. This thesis explores the trailblazers who began cunt’s reclamation –– Queer Ballroom performers and women-artists –– contextualizes its usage through widely understood reclamation principles, and offers considerations for cunt-curious folks. In a society that has othered and marginalized women and Queer …
Migration-Associated Variation In Blood Parasitism, Body Condition, And Stress In Gambel’S White-Crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia Leucophrys Gambelii), Julianna Deibel
Migration-Associated Variation In Blood Parasitism, Body Condition, And Stress In Gambel’S White-Crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia Leucophrys Gambelii), Julianna Deibel
Scripps Senior Theses
Migration is a widespread behavior in animals which both causes and is motivated by fluctuations in nutrient availability. Migration is ecologically important, as it connects areas of differing primary productivities and carries pathogens over distance. The relationship between migration and disease is complex, sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance, and influenced by ecological cycles as well as host, vector and parasite life cycles. Four central migration-infection mechanisms have been proposed: migratory susceptibility, migratory exposure, migratory escape, and migratory culling. These mechanisms may yield increased or decreased infection post-migration, based on migration’s physiological tax and the concentration of pathogens along migratory pathways.

“Even The Hardest Stone Can Fracture:” Racialization, Reproductive Control, And The Wake Of Slavery In N.K. Jemisin’S The Fifth Season, Elsbeth Sanders
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
When the science fiction and fantasy novel The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin won the Hugo Award in 2016, Jemisin became the first Black author to win the prestigious literary science fiction award. A departure from similar novels at the time, The Fifth Season has a strong understanding of systems of oppression and how they are built and upheld. This thesis argues that The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin follows the conventions of the neo-slave/meta-slave narrative to explore themes of racialization and reproductive control under enslavement and oppression. I conduct a feminist literary of the novel, focusing on these themes, …

Genetic Diversity Of Paxistima Canbyi A. Gray: Conserving A Rare Plant Species Endemic To The Eastern United States, Isaac Buabeng
Master’s Theses
Premise: The glacial cycles of the Pleistocene period likely had a profound impact on the genetic diversity and phylogeographic patterns of numerous plant taxa in North America. However, the genetic diversity of rare, limestone-endemic woody species has not been highlighted. This study assesses genetic diversity in Paxistima canbyi A. Gray (Canby’s mountain lover or rat stripper), a rare limestone endemic small woody plant.
Methods: We investigated the genetic diversity of P. canbyi using genomic Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) data from 165 individuals from 14 populations sampled from across the entire range distribution. We first; de novo assembled the SNP …
Transient Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy For Measuring Collisional Quenching Rates Of Co And Its Potential For Studying H2o, Jordan M. Polvere
Transient Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy For Measuring Collisional Quenching Rates Of Co And Its Potential For Studying H2o, Jordan M. Polvere
Master’s Theses
Motivated by the necessity of non-LTE models that account for species that are not in Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) in Titan’s and Earth’s atmospheres, collisional quenching rates of CO and H2O(g) have been studied. Providing more accurate and precise values of collisional quenching rate coefficients is crucial in the development of more advanced atmospheric models, which are important to fields of science such as meteorology and astronomy. Rates of collisional quenching of CO(v=1,2) by CO and CO(v=2) by N2 at approximately 301-321 K were measured by transient diode laser absorption spectroscopy. The rate coefficients of CO(v=1)-CO, CO(v=2)-CO, and …

Optimization Of Buffers Used In Phycobiliprotein Extraction From The Cyanobacterium Acaryochloris Marina, Rinah Fleisher
Optimization Of Buffers Used In Phycobiliprotein Extraction From The Cyanobacterium Acaryochloris Marina, Rinah Fleisher
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Optimization of buffers used in phycocyanin extraction from A. marina was explored including acetate, phosphate, and citrate buffers as well as deionized water as a negative control. Samples were extracted in triplicates for each trial with two extraction trials completed overall for citrate buffer (n=6), phosphate buffer (n=6), acetate buffer (n=6), and deionized water (n=6). Results reflect no statistical difference in phycocyanin content (μg/mL) between each buffer or deionized water control. Though no statistically significant differences between treatment groups were found, phosphate buffer yielded the greatest phycocyanin content and the deionized water negative control yielded the lowest phycocyanin content overall. …
The Climate Crisis And The Class System: An Ethical Analysis, Alia Baig
The Climate Crisis And The Class System: An Ethical Analysis, Alia Baig
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Climate change is a concerning subject that more and more people are beginning to care about. The climate crisis is continuing to affect populations across the globe and shows no signs of slowing. While everyone has been affected by climate change in some capacity, the climate crisis disproportionately affects low-income communities around the world and, specifically, within the United States. I plan to research the ethics of the relationship between climate change and the class system and the goal o f this project is to prove the claim that the class system is the reason for climate change's disproportionate effect …

Psychotropic Polypharmacy On Heart Rate Of Daphnia Magna, Gwendolynne Miller, Brian Bagatto
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The prevalence of patients being prescribed multiple medications concurrently is significantly rising, and so is the importance of investigating any interactions between medications. One common example—sertraline and clomipramine have been used together to treat obsessive compulsive disorder. Clomipramine, however, is known to cause tachyarrhythmias in some patients. The present study set out to investigate the role of this drug combination on the heart rate of a simple animal model, Daphnia magna, or the water flea. The water flea was exposed to saline, sertraline, clomipramine, or sertraline plus clomipramine, and heart rate was measured subsequently. It was found that the …

The Smell Of Fear: Responses Of Native And Invasive Geckos To Predator Scent Cues On Moorea, French Polynesia, Haley Dreisbach, Tessa Bodo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Hemidactylus frenatus, a globally invasive species, is syntopic with the native gecko Lepidodactylus lugubris on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia. The success of an invasive species, H. frenatus can be attributed to many factors and is the subject of much study. Some research suggests that invasive and native geckos may differ in their response to chemosensory cues from predators. We compared the responses of H. frenatus and L. lugubris to the scents of both a native local predator; centipede, and a common predator of geckos that is not present on Moorea; snake. While neither gecko species showed any …
Sources And Termination Patterns Of Cholinergic Input To The Ventral Nucleus Of The Lateral Lemniscus, Emily Echols
Sources And Termination Patterns Of Cholinergic Input To The Ventral Nucleus Of The Lateral Lemniscus, Emily Echols
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Neurons transmit signals through an electrochemical reaction: synapses on dendrites and the cell body receive neurotransmitters, and their effect on the cell determines the signal the cell will transmit. From dendrites to axon and then to another cell at a synaptic cleft, signals can propagate, enhance each other, or inhibit other transmissions until the message is received by the target area. Understanding the science behind neural signaling and structural function begins at the level of the synapse. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) plays a substantial role in modulating neural activity in the auditory system, but for many brainstem nuclei the source …
Embryonic Exposure To Sodium Perchlorate Disrupts Organ Development In Mice, Kyle Bouten
Embryonic Exposure To Sodium Perchlorate Disrupts Organ Development In Mice, Kyle Bouten
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Perchlorate is an endocrine disrupting compound (EDC) commonly used for its oxidative properties. Perchlorate has been detected in many industrialized countries in drinking water, soil, foods, and breast milk. Perchlorate competitively inhibits the uptake of iodide into the thyroid follicles via the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS), thus reducing thyroid hormone synthesis. Perchlorate has many conflicting results in the toxicological effects that perchlorate has on organ development in model fishes, but much less work has been done on mammals. In the present study, I examined the morphological effects of environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 10, and 100ppm) of sodium perchlorate on the thyroid, …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
Thyroid hormone (TH) is essential for auditory system development. Proper auditory function requires remodeling and transformation of cochlear structures during a critical developmental period. In rodent models, low TH during this timeframe delays remodeling and impacts ion channel function required for hearing to occur. TH receptors are ligand-dependent transcription factors that regulate expression of genes. Considering this, auditory deficits observed in hypothyroidism are thought to be largely the result of altered expression of specific TH receptor target genes. TH is reported to impact calcium signaling in several tissues, but whether regulators of calcium signaling are altered following developmental hypothyroidism is …
