Does Heightened Perceptual Encoding In Blind Individuals Extend To Word Learning?, Lindsay N. Harris, Marissa Renee Bamberger
Does Heightened Perceptual Encoding In Blind Individuals Extend To Word Learning?, Lindsay N. Harris, Marissa Renee Bamberger
CISLL Publications
Past research reported blind participants tend to encode sensory details of encounters with stimuli they will later recall or recollect, whereas sighted individuals tend to abstract meaning from sensory information when encoding memories. Here we ask whether blind individuals’ use of perceptual in addition to semantic encoding extends to a task—word learning—whose purpose amounts to semantically encoding the word and definition. After studying the definitions of spoken or written words, blind braille readers (n = 23) and sighted print readers (n = 20) re-encountered each word and indicated whether it was previously presented in the same modality. Analyses …

Honors Theses
This thesis presents a comprehensive study on the characterization and application of a rotating drum sampler for air quality monitoring, with a focus on aerosol composition analysis using Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICPMS). The study aimed to determine (1) the cut-off points of the drum sampler to better understand its performance characteristics and (2) to investigate indoor air quality, specifically within makerspaces on Bucknell University’s campus. The research highlighted the novelty of applying LA-ICPMS for time-resolved aerosol composition analysis, demonstrating the potential for low-cost pollution concentration studies. The characterization experiments did not yield expected results, but the …
Experimental Evaluation Of Mesh Size In Physically Crosslinked Polymer Gels Using Dynamic Light Scattering, Duncan M. Hill
Experimental Evaluation Of Mesh Size In Physically Crosslinked Polymer Gels Using Dynamic Light Scattering, Duncan M. Hill
Honors Theses
Block copolymer gels are under consideration as drug delivery patches. Controlling and modeling the transport inside the gel is an important contribution to the successful delivery of pharmaceuticals. The diffusive transport of a solute – such as a therapeutic compound – within the gel can be described by the mesh size of the gel, which is defined as the distance between polymer chains. Existing experimental evaluations of mesh size do not work for block copolymer gels due to differences in the fundamental gel structure. As such, an experimental method of measuring mesh size of block copolymer gels using dynamic light …
Associations Between Loneliness And Social Anxiety: Predictors Of Life-Satisfaction In Young Adults, Desiree Groce
Associations Between Loneliness And Social Anxiety: Predictors Of Life-Satisfaction In Young Adults, Desiree Groce
Honors Theses
This research builds upon current findings pertaining to life-satisfaction. Loneliness, related to inadequate well-being, has been shown to negatively affect various domains of one's life. Moreover, Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) has negative consequences that have been shown to affect the quality of one's well-being. The present research conducted two studies to elucidate the connection between loneliness and SAD as potential predictors of life-satisfaction. The first study sought to clarify the relationship between social and emotional loneliness and life-satisfaction. It was predicted that lower social loneliness scores will predict higher life-satisfaction scores, and lower emotional loneliness scores will predict higher life-satisfaction …

Honors Theses
The present study examines two classes of behavior in probands with the 16p11.2 duplication and deletion: repetitive behavior and psychosis spectrum behavior. It was hypothesized that 1.) deletion and duplication cases will differ significantly in the means and profiles of repetitive behaviors across five subscales and 2.)16p11.2 duplication cases will exhibit more schizotypal traits than the deletion cases. Data on 94 total participants was obtained from the Simmons Variation Individuals Project. Three scales were used to measure behavior: the Childhood Routines Inventory-Revised, the Childhood Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences, and the Child Behavior Checklist. Data analysis was conducted using …
Curriculum, Knowledge, And Power: A Critical Race Approach To Content Analysis Of Social Studies Textbooks, Eliza G. Ray
Curriculum, Knowledge, And Power: A Critical Race Approach To Content Analysis Of Social Studies Textbooks, Eliza G. Ray
Honors Theses
This study uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a theoretical framework to examine the portrayal of the U.S. Revolutionary War in three 5th grade social studies textbooks approved by the state of Florida’s curriculum standards. Textbooks have been a focal point for political debate, most recently influenced more by politicians than by educators. A qualitative rubric was developed to evaluate the textbooks, examining the extent to which they include a CRT telling of the Revolutionary War. This rubric was informed by the tenets of CRT in educational research as described by Solorzano and Yosso (2002). Consistent themes arose from the …

Examining The Relationship Between Subclinical Borderline Personality Disorder And Social Support Networks, Gabriella D'Alicandro
Honors Theses
The purpose of my study was to investigate the relationship between subclinical Borderline Personality Disorder and social support in situational measures such as social provisions, network size, and network satisfaction as well as dispositional measures such as support seeking and socially supportive behaviors. I hypothesized that BPD scores would be negatively correlated with all dispositional support measures. I also predicted that in situational support measures, BPD would have a negative correlation. I hypothesized when confronted with romantic stressors participants would receive more support when confounded with the workplace stressors. Participants (N= 178; 146 women 28 men, 3 nonbinary individuals, and …

Open Educational Resources - Teaching and Learning
The goal of this assignment is for preservice teachers to articulate their WHY. Having a strong ‘why’ can help you figure out ‘how’. In the case of resilience, if one knows why they are doing what they are doing, why they want or desire something, or why they are on this planet at this given time, they are likely to feel more confident about their purpose as well as have a core belief to rely on to overcome adversity and move towards their goals. We all have a story. Our stories are valuable and worthy to be heard. This assignment …
An Investigation Of The Correlation Between Polymer Solution Entanglement And Electrospun Polycaprolactone Fiber Mechanics, Manasa Sujatha Rajeev
An Investigation Of The Correlation Between Polymer Solution Entanglement And Electrospun Polycaprolactone Fiber Mechanics, Manasa Sujatha Rajeev
Honors Theses
The aim of this study was to determine the role of entanglement in the mechanical properties of electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) fibers. PCL is a useful polyester due to its favorable properties such as its biocompatibility and biodegradability. Multiple concentrations of PCL were dissolved in a 3:1 acetic to formic acid solvent. Fibers were formed using an electrospinning technique. Entanglement is a required parameter to produce fibers, thus the number of entanglements per polymer (ne) was calculated, as well as the corresponding concentrations. Smooth continuous fibers were found to form between 13 w/v% and 17 w/v%. Mechanical analysis, such as three-point …
Trading Perspectives: The Impact Of Gender In Shaping National Trade Policies, Katherine Kwiatkowski
Trading Perspectives: The Impact Of Gender In Shaping National Trade Policies, Katherine Kwiatkowski
Honors Theses
Economic and political factors have been shown to influence the trade policy decisions of national leaders. The impact of a national leader’s gender on their trade policy preferences remains an underexplored area of research. The increasing share of female national leaders raises the question of whether their policy preferences vary from those of male leaders because of their gender. In this study, I utilize the gender of a nation’s leader to implement a two-way fixed effects regression that analyzes the impact of gender on a leader’s trade policy preferences. Controlling for factors that could also impact a leader’s trade policy …
Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles And Halogen Bond Interactions With Neonicotinoid Pesticides, Molly Mccuen “Mackey” Sherard
Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles And Halogen Bond Interactions With Neonicotinoid Pesticides, Molly Mccuen “Mackey” Sherard
Honors Theses
Neonicotinoid (NN) pesticides have emerged globally as one of the most widely used agricultural tools for protecting crops from pest damage and boosting food production. Unfortunately, some NN compounds, such as extensively employed imidacloprid-based pesticides, have also been identified as likely endangering critical pollinating insects like honey bees. To this end, NN pesticides pose a potential threat to world food supplies. As more countries restrict or prohibit the use of NN pesticides, tools are needed to effectively and quickly identify the presence of NN compounds like imidacloprid on site (e.g., in storage areas on farms or pesticide distribution warehouses). This …

Diagnostic Utility Of Chest Radiographs In Children With Clinically Diagnosed Pneumonia As Per The Kenya Basic Paediatric Protocol, Ivy Waruguru Wakahora
Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology
Introduction; Pneumonia causes significant morbidity and mortality in children globally, emphasizing the need for accurate diagnosis. While chest radiographs have traditionally been the gold standard for diagnosis, recent international guidelines discourage their routine use in paediatric community acquired pneumonia (pCAP). Despite this, chest radiographs are still regularly acquired for pneumonia diagnosis, resulting in practice variations and imaging overutilization. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic utility of chest radiographs in children with clinically diagnosed pneumonia as per the Kenya Basic Paediatric Protocol (KBPP).

Out Of Hand: Why Federal Protection Of Biometric Privacy Is A Pressing Issue In U.S. Employment, Emily Harmon
Out Of Hand: Why Federal Protection Of Biometric Privacy Is A Pressing Issue In U.S. Employment, Emily Harmon
Wyoming Law Review
The practice of using biometric identifiers such as fingerprints, facial recognition, and eye scans in place of usernames and passwords is becoming widespread in the workplace. Because of the lack of federal protection, employers may compel employees’ participation in biometric-enabled systems as a term of employment. A person’s biometric data cannot be replaced and is often linked to personal and financial accounts. Additionally, employers collecting biometric data often rely on third parties for information technology service and storage. Biometric data collection creates the potential for data breaches, for system malfunctions, and for third parties to learn additional information about the …

Impact Of Hdac Inhibitors On The Efficiency Of Cardiomyocyte Differentiation, Lauren Mary Sargent
Impact Of Hdac Inhibitors On The Efficiency Of Cardiomyocyte Differentiation, Lauren Mary Sargent
Honors Theses and Capstones
Heart disease and injury is the leading cause of death worldwide, with much of its severity caused by the low regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes (CMs). One of the strategies to counteract the poor regeneration of CMs is the production of CMs via differentiating stem cells. However, the low efficiency of obtaining CMs from stem cells is an issue because there are numerous inconsistencies in the process. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have been researched as ways to increase efficiency of CM differentiation by increasing histone acetylation, and thereby allowing differentiation to occur more efficiently. In this study, the HDAC inhibitor, trichostatin …

Journal of Law, Technology, & the Internet
Recent advances in artificial intelligence have set off a frenzy of commercial activity, with companies fearful that they may fall behind if they are unable to quickly incorporate the new technology into their products or their internal processes. At the same time, numerous scholars from the machine learning community have warned of the fundamental risks that uninhibited use of artificial intelligence poses to society. The question is not whether artificial intelligence will cause harm, but when, and how. The certainty of future harm necessitates that legal scholars and practitioners examine the liability implications of artificial intelligence. While this topic has …
