Armed Conflict And Household Water Sources, George Naufal, Michael A. Malcolm, Vidya Diwakar Jan 2024

Armed Conflict And Household Water Sources, George Naufal, Michael A. Malcolm, Vidya Diwakar

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

Access to safe drinking water is among the most important determinants of public health outcomes. We pair household-level data from Iraq together with data on armed conflict and adopt a generalized difference-in-differences approach to study the relationship between household drinking water sources and armed conflict intensity. We find that households located in conflict-affected areas are more likely to use piped water accessed at their homes or bottled water as their primary source of drinking water, but are less likely to use public water sources or tanked water delivered on trucks and carts. We explore the temporal dynamics of these adjustments …

Universities implement a variety of interventions to address student engagement and retention. This is especially true post-pandemic as faculty attempt to return to a pre-pandemic structure. Emerging adulthood aligns with the personal responsibility demanded of college students as well as changes in personal growth. In the current climate, stress has been shown to negatively impact executive functioning, the cognitive processes necessary for academic success. This essay describes an intervention encouraging student self-reflexivity around processes for engagement, academic success, and retention. Communication Fundamentals for College Success—a 5-week, two-credit workshop—was developed and delivered by the authors. Curriculum focused on time management, study …

Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen Jan 2024

Environment And Belief: Investigating The Dakota Archeological Record, Anna Kay Wiitanen-Eggen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The oral traditions and histories of a people’s belief systems are one means by which the relationships between a people and their environment are embodied. Environmental aspects of a people’s belief system are reflected in their use of their habited space(s) because beliefs help structure actions. Ergo, an examination of a people’s oral traditions and histories has the potential to provide valuable insight to the archeological record of the places potentially occupied by their ancestors or close relatives. Investigation of this aspect of archeology is a relatively new pursuit and is almost completely unexplored in Minnesota. The relationship between the …

Who Is "Women's Health" For? Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care, Evan Thomas England Jan 2024

Who Is "Women's Health" For? Lgbtq+ Inclusion In Sexual And Reproductive Health Care, Evan Thomas England

Doctoral Dissertations

Throughout modern Western history, access to fully affirming and supportive sexual and reproductive health care (SRH) has been denied to most women and sexual and gender minorities. Also, as demonstrated by the ubiquity of the term “women’s health,” SRH often reflects a cisgender heterosexual (cishet) women-centered approach, alienating transgender, non-binary, gender nonconforming, and sexual minority individuals who are not cishet women but are in equal need of the same life-saving screenings, treatments, and counseling services. Due to the operationalization and reproduction of gendered ideologies and unequal social hierarchies within SRH, inadequate access to quality sexual health education for youth, and …

Pristine Or Perilous? Evaluating The Risks Of Cyanotoxin Production, Exposure, And Accumulation In Gye Lakes, Katherine Low Jan 2024

Pristine Or Perilous? Evaluating The Risks Of Cyanotoxin Production, Exposure, And Accumulation In Gye Lakes, Katherine Low

Doctoral Dissertations

Toxins produced by cyanobacteria (hereafter, cyanotoxins) are among the most lethal known biotoxins. Cyanotoxin exposure is assumed to occur mainly through direct contact with surface-bloom-forming cyanobacteria that are most commonly observed in warm, nutrient-rich lakes. However, recent observations of cyanotoxin accumulation in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), an area where cyanobacteria blooms are rarely observed, have raised concerns over wildlife health in this highly protected region. In response, we sampled twelve clear-water lakes in the GYE to identify potential sources of cyanotoxins (particularly the neurotoxin beta-methylamino-L-alanine, BMAA), exposure routes, and health risks.Despite nutrient limitations and cool water temperatures, the sampled …

A Review Of The Hierarchy Of Plithogenic, Neutrosophic, And Fuzzy Graphs: Survey And Applications, Takaaki Fujita, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

As many readers may know, graph theory is a fundamental branch of mathematics that examines networks consisting of nodes and edges, with a focus on their paths, structures, and properties [157]. A Fuzzy Graph extends this concept by assigning a membership degree between 0 and 1 to each edge and vertex, capturing the level of uncertainty. Expanding on this idea, the Turiyam Neutrosophic Graph was introduced as an extension of both Neutrosophic and Fuzzy Graphs. Plithogenic graphs, in turn, offer a powerful approach for managing uncertainty. In this paper, we explore the relationships among various graph classes, including Plithogenic graphs, …

Exploring The Factors Of Sleep Quality: An Integrated Analysis Of Data From Questionnaires And Environmental Sensor Data, Jiaqian Xu

Public Health Theses

Sleep quality plays a crucial role in human health, but its determinants remain incompletelyunderstood. This integrated analysis investigates the relationships of demographic characteristics, living habits, as well as psychological factors on sleep quality. It also ranks the importance of sleep discomfort and examines the effect of bedroom air quality on sleep quality. Results showed stress had a significant negative correlation (r = -0.66) with sleep quality. Furthermore, nocturnal bathroom usage was the most influential predictor, contributing approximately 17.5% to sleep quality ratings using random forest classification. Air quality measures, including carbon dioxide (CO2) levels, temperature, relative humidity, and particulate matter …

Proximal Discourses In Residential Facility Care Providers’ Sense-Making Of Their Communication With Family Members Of A Loved One With Alzheimer’S Disease, Aimee E. Miller-Ott, Tristin Evans

Faculty Publications - Communications

Families often stay involved in the care of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease even after relocation to a residential care facility, and through this transition, communication between the residential care providers and families becomes integral to keeping family informed and providing good care to the patient. However, care providers of people with Alzheimer’s living in residential facilities find themselves overwhelmed by expectations related to their caregiving role and struggle with making sense of their experiences. Fifteen care providers of people with Alzheimer’s disease living in a residential facility participated in qualitative, semi-structured interviews. Using relational dialectics theory as the …

Kif3a Tail Domain Phosphorylation Is Not Required For Ciliogenesis In Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts, Ayoola Fasawe, Jessica M. Adams, Martin Engelke Jan 2024

Kif3a Tail Domain Phosphorylation Is Not Required For Ciliogenesis In Mouse Embryonic Fibroblasts, Ayoola Fasawe, Jessica M. Adams, Martin Engelke

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Primary cilia are essential signaling organelles that protrude from most cells in the body. Heterodimeric kinesin-2 (KIF3A/KIF3B/KAP3) powers several intracellular transport processes, including intraflagellar transport (IFT), essential for ciliogenesis. A long-standing question is how a motor protein is differentially regulated for specific cargos. Since phosphorylation of the KIF3A tail domain was suggested to regulate the activity of kinesin-2 for ciliogenesis, similarly as for the cytosolic cargo N-Cadherin, we set out to map the phosphosites involved in this regulation. Using well-characterized Kif3a−/−; Kif3b−/− mouse embryonic fibroblasts, we performed ciliogenesis rescue assays with a library of phosphomimetic mutants comprising all …

Assessment Of Conjugation Pathways In N-Methylporphyrins That Are Fused To Acenaphthylene, Phenanthrene Or Pyrene: Evidence For The Presence Of Alternative Aromatic Circuits, Jared S. Salrin, Brian G. Carpenter, Deyaa Abusalim, Timothy D. Lash Jan 2024

Lash

Faculty Publications – Chemistry

Acenaphtho-, phenanthro-, and pyrenopyrrole esters, readily available from Barton-Zard reactions of ethyl isocyanoacetate with nitroarenes, were reacted with methyl iodide and KOH in DMSO to give N-methylpyrroles and subsequent cleavage of the ester moieties was accomplished with KOH in ethylene glycol at 200 °C. Condensation with two equiv of an acetoxymethylpyrrole in refluxing acetic acid-2-propanol afforded a series of annulated tripyrranes. Cleavage of the terminal tert-butyl ester groups with trifluoroacetic acid, followed by condensation with a diformylpyrrole and oxidation with FeCl3, gave N-methyl acenaphtho-, phenanthro-, and pyrenoporphyrins. The N-methyl substituent effectively freezes the tautomeric equilibria to maximize interactions between the …

Expanded Transference: A Humanities Perspective On The Generative Core Of Ernest Becker's Theory Of Human Nature, Daniel Liechty, Jerry Piven Jan 2024

Expanded Transference: A Humanities Perspective On The Generative Core Of Ernest Becker's Theory Of Human Nature, Daniel Liechty, Jerry Piven

Faculty Publications - Social Work

The death anxiety thesis is widely considered to be Ernest Becker’s primary contribution to social theory and is associated with his most widely read book, The Denial of Death (1973). This essay suggests Becker is understood in a more sophisticated and nuanced way when his death anxiety thesis is situated in the context of his earlier work in the humanities and social sciences. The death anxiety thesis itself is one component of a much broader theoretical conceptualization of expanded transference, a constant thread through all of Becker’s writings from his doctoral dissertation through his final posthumously published works. Furthermore, the …
