Observing And Estimating Soil Freeze Thaw Processes: From Remote Sensing To Land Surface Modeling, Mahsa Moradikhaneghahi Jan 2024

Observing And Estimating Soil Freeze Thaw Processes: From Remote Sensing To Land Surface Modeling, Mahsa Moradikhaneghahi

Doctoral Dissertations

Freezing conditions affect more than half of the exposed land in the Northern Hemisphere in cold seasons, where transitions between frozen and thawed states impact surface and subsurface water and energy budget. Recognized as an Essential Climate Variable (ECV), accurate, reliable and efficient estimates of soil freeze/thaw (FT) processes with a moderate spatiotemporal resolution are needed to fully resolve highly-dynamic processes taking place at the land-atmosphere interface. Active microwave remote sensing and land surface modeling are promising tools for advancing the monitoring of FT as an ECV. My dissertation addresses key scientific gaps in estimating soil FT conditions using active …

Doctoral Dissertations

The deep sea covers over two-thirds of the globe and represents 95% of the ocean. Most life on Earth is suspected to live on or near the seabed. Yet, these ecosystems are the least known on Earth and are important to explore as they are home to a diverse array of species that are currently under threat because of multiple anthropogenic pressures, including warming oceans. Exploration of these systems is critical to further the understanding of species interactions, biodiversity and their overall relationship to environmental and terrain variables. Many of these variables are used in species distribution models and technological …

Rational Design Of Polymers For Specific Interactions With Liquid And Solid-State Water, Nick Mitchell Jan 2024

Rational Design Of Polymers For Specific Interactions With Liquid And Solid-State Water, Nick Mitchell

Doctoral Dissertations

Many plants and animals that live in arctic regions possess biological cryoprotecting agents (CPAs) known as antifreeze proteins (AFPs) which protect them against cryoinjury in their native subfreezing environment. AFPs and their synthetic biomimetics have received increasing attention as potential candidates for various industrial and bio-medical applications. Despite the interest in developing synthetic, macromolecular CPAs; a full understanding of the antifreeze process induced by these remains elusive. To explore this, we have synthesized a series of water- soluble polyol-based polymers with systematic variation of their chain architectures. While AFPs are well-known for their ice nucleation and recrystallization inhibition activity along with …

Connecting Conservation: Modeling And Socializing Climate Connectivity For Land Conservation, Melissa M. Clark Jan 2024

Connecting Conservation: Modeling And Socializing Climate Connectivity For Land Conservation, Melissa M. Clark

Doctoral Dissertations

As the climate changes, species must either adapt, relocate, or face extinction. This pressing reality underscores the importance of promoting climate connectivity, which ensures that habitats and landscapes remain interconnected, allowing species to move and adapt as climate conditions shift. Given the challenges posed by ongoing climate change, it is crucial that land conservation decisions incorporate climate connectivity. Conservation goals should be informed by the latest connectivity models and be practical for implementation by on-the-ground practitioners. This dissertation aims to bridge the gap between these two critical needs, which are not always well-integrated in conservation work. Modeling connectivity in a …

Many mental health clinicians strive to provide their clients with rehabilitative and psychotherapy services resulting in a client gaining stable income and housing. However, the role of a senior mental health clinician (SMHC) is not without its challenges of trying to balance their well-being while dealing with increased coworker turnover, demanding caseloads, and limited access to community resources to provide clients with getting their lives back on track, thereby impacting clinicians’ understanding of their self-efficacy. Much of the research on self-efficacy has focused on mental health clients, mental health graduate students, and mental health trainees, often leaving out the lived …

Enhancing 21 U.S.C. §§ 355, 356, And 360 To Encompass Artificial Intelligence-Based Drug Design And Manufacturing Methods, Aj Tsang Jan 2024

Enhancing 21 U.S.C. §§ 355, 356, And 360 To Encompass Artificial Intelligence-Based Drug Design And Manufacturing Methods, Aj Tsang

Michigan Technology Law Review

Despite newfound attention to how artificial intelligence (AI) may accelerate pharmaceutical development, federal regulators may find that current statutes are ambiguous or silent about their applicability to AI-based drug design and manufacturing methods. This poses a serious problem in the era of Loper Bright and the Major Questions Doctrine. As federal agencies struggle to adjust to courts’ growing demand for Congress to craft clear, explicit, and express delegations of authority, this note develops a statutory framework in which the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would have more flexibility to regulate the use of AI in advanced drug manufacturing. Guided by …

Molecular And Cellular Programs Underlying The Development Of Bovine Pre-Implantation Embryos, Zongliang Jiang Jan 2024

Molecular And Cellular Programs Underlying The Development Of Bovine Pre-Implantation Embryos, Zongliang Jiang

Faculty Publications

Early embryonic mortality is a major cause of infertility in cattle, yet the underlying molecular causes remain a mystery. Over the past half century, assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation and somatic cell nuclear transfer have been used to improve cattle reproductive efficiency; however, reduced embryo developmental potential is seen compared to their in vivo counterparts. Recent years have seen exciting progress across bovine embryo research, including genomic profiling of embryogenesis, new methods for improving embryo competence, and experimenting on building bovine embryos from stem cell cultures. These advances are beginning to define bovine embryo molecular and cellular …

Cow’s milk is frequently included in the human diet, but the relationship between milk intake and type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains controversial. Here, using data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, we show that in both sexes, higher milk intake is associated with lower risk of T2D in lactase non-persistent (LNP) individuals (determined by a variant of the lactase LCT gene, single nucleotide polymorphism rs4988235) but not in lactase persistent individuals. We validate this finding in the UK Biobank. Further analyses reveal that among LNP individuals, higher milk intake is associated with alterations in gut microbiota (for example, …

An Argument Against Positivist Separability, Nichalus Zoltan Vali Jan 2024

An Argument Against Positivist Separability, Nichalus Zoltan Vali

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most influential views associated with legal positivism is that of the separability thesis. Primarily associated with H.L.A Hart, this thesis is widely understood to be the view that there is no necessary connection between law and morality. However, John Gardner takes this to be a naïve interpretation of separability that fails to adequately characterize legal positivism and which Hart himself did not endorse. Instead, Hart and other legal positivists were committed to the view that whether a norm is legally valid depends on its sources (i.e., social facts such as official engagement with the norm) and not …

Substance use disorders (SUDs) have an enormous impact on public health. With classic psychedelic-assisted therapies showing initial promise in treating multiple SUDs, it is possible that these treatments will become legally available options for patients with SUDs in the future. This article highlights how classic psychedelic-assisted therapies might be integrated into current clinical practice. We first describe contemporary evidence-based treatments for SUDs and highlight how classic psychedelic-assisted therapies might fit within each treatment. We suggest that classic psychedelic-assisted therapies can be integrated into most mainstream evidence-based SUD treatments that are currently used in clinical settings, indicating broad compatibility of classic …

Effect Of Fluid Elasticity On The Emergence Of Oscillations In An Active Elastic Filament, Kathryn G. Link, Robert D. Guy, Becca Thomases, Paulo E. Arratia Jan 2024

Effect Of Fluid Elasticity On The Emergence Of Oscillations In An Active Elastic Filament, Kathryn G. Link, Robert D. Guy, Becca Thomases, Paulo E. Arratia

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many microorganisms propel themselves through complex media by deforming their flagella. The beat is thought to emerge from interactions between forces of the surrounding fluid, the passive elastic response from deformations of the flagellum and active forces from internal molecular motors. The beat varies in response to changes in the fluid rheology, including elasticity, but there are limited data on how systematic changes in elasticity alter the beat. This work analyses a related problem with fixed-strength driving force: the emergence of beating of an elastic planar filament driven by a follower force at the tip of a viscoelastic fluid. This …

Ecological And Evolutionary Ramifications Of Host-Parasite Interaction In Aquatic And Model Ecosystems, Akacia Halliday-Isaac

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Host-parasite interactions are ubiquitous and have negative risks and consequences on individual, population, and evolutionary scales. These risks and consequences include altered population densities, changes in interspecies interactions, and rapid changes in host phenotypes. In this thesis, I seek to understand the ecological and evolutionary ramifications of host-parasite interactions within ecosystems. To do this, I investigated the presence and environmental correlates of potential host-parasite interactions in a freshwater ecosystem and used a model ecosystem to explore how past host-parasite coevolution affects community assembly dynamics and future adaptation in the presence of new stressors. To examine the presence of potentially parasitic …

Effects Of Off-Season Fall-Winter Farm Field Flooding On Nitrogen Gas Production, Andrew Rosson Jan 2024

Effects Of Off-Season Fall-Winter Farm Field Flooding On Nitrogen Gas Production, Andrew Rosson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increased nitrogen (N) fertilizer use and cultivation of N-fixing crops have dramatically increased agricultural N inputs to the global N cycle. Excess N on agricultural lands is highly susceptible to loss through runoff or atmospheric emissions, potentially as a greenhouse gas (GHG). Nitrous oxide (N2O), a GHG with a warming potential ~300 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2), primarily enters the atmosphere through denitrification, which converts bioavailable nitrate (NO3-) to inert nitrogen gas (N2), with N2O as an intermediate. Wetlands are crucial for de-nitrification and N regulation due to their wet, anoxic soils, but have declined worldwide, including substantial losses …

Edtech For Learning Outcomes And Impact: A Comprehensive Approach, Priyanka Sharma Jan 2024

Edtech For Learning Outcomes And Impact: A Comprehensive Approach, Priyanka Sharma

Student learning processes

A precise estimation of learners' abilities is the first and foremost step in personalized learning including EdTech solutions. Predictive analytic techniques such as Item Response Theory (IRT), Bayesian Knowledge Tracing (BKT), and Performance Factor Analysis (PFA) are established practices to achieve this purpose. However, the complexity, cost, and time involved in calibration, and the challenges in online implementation, have led to the adoption of simpler alternatives such as Elo, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, the estimation of abilities is just one facet of personalized learning, and designing effective personalized learning experiences is equally essential to guide learners through their …

Heterocarpus ensifer A. Milne—Edwards (1881) (Crustacea: Pandalidae), armed nylon shrimp, is widely distributed in the western and eastern North Atlantic Ocean. In the western Atlantic this shrimp occurs from off North Carolina to Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), western Bahamas, and Caribbean Sea at depths of 170—885 m. Despite its widespread occurrence, ecology or biology information for this species are sparse, and in situ observations of abundance, behavior and habitat preferences are particularly lacking. During extensive submersible and ROV observations on and near deep—reefs in the north—central and eastern GOM, a remarkably large aggregation of H. ensifer …

“To Try The Difference”: Encountering A Different Self In Henry Neville’S Isle Of Pines, Andrew Fleck Jan 2024

“To Try The Difference”: Encountering A Different Self In Henry Neville’S Isle Of Pines, Andrew Fleck

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

It is critical that the imagined space of Henry Neville’s Restoration-era novella, The Isle of Pines, is an island, a space cut off from the mainland where history and culture can unfold in different ways. The island, encountered unintentionally by “civilized” Europeans during a Dutch trading voyage across the Indian Ocean, has a previously unknown population. Rather than a new, long-established nation of islanders, however, the population are the descendants of five castaways from an English shipwreck. Viewed through the lens of the unfamiliar, these islanders adhere to tropes associated with discovery narratives; simultaneously, the islanders carry with them …
