Wrongful Convictions, Wrongful Prosecutions And Wrongful Detentions In India, Kent Roach
Wrongful Convictions, Wrongful Prosecutions And Wrongful Detentions In India, Kent Roach
National Law School of India Review
The first part of this article examines wrongful convictions in India. In part because of the absence of a jury, appellate courts, including the apex court, are more willing to evaluate whether the evidence for a conviction is sufficient than appellate courts in other common law systems. From 2016 to 2022, the High Courts and the Supreme Court have acquitted over two hundred accused in death penalty cases alone. The willingness of appellate courts to acquit is a strength of the Indian system that should be maintained. At the same time, remedied wrongful convictions in India likely represent only the …

Natural organic memristors are promising synapse candidates for neuromorphic systems due to their significant benefits, such as environmental sustainability, low production and disposal cost, non-volatile storage capability, and bio/CMOS-compatibility. In this paper, experimental evaluations of a neuromorphic system based on honey-memristors are reported. First, honey-memristors are manufactured and tested based on our in-house technology, and then the non-linear characteristics inherent to honey-memristors, which causes inaccurate weight updates and reduces the inference accuracy, are explored. A non-linear mapping (NMP) method is applied to mitigate the effects of non-linearity in honey-memristor, under different scenarios including multiple cycle-to-cycle variations and Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) …

Over the past decade, boldine, a naturally occurring alkaloid found in several plant species including the Chilean Boldo tree, has garnered attention for its efficacy in rodent models of human disease. Some of the properties that have been attributed to boldine include antioxidant activities, neuroprotective and analgesic actions, hepatoprotective effects, anti-inflammatory actions, cardioprotective effects and anticancer potential. Compelling data now indicates that boldine blocks connexin (Cx) hemichannels (HCs) and that many if not all of its effects in rodent models of injury and disease are due to CxHC blockade. Here we provide an overview of boldine's pharmacological properties, including its …

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) is a rapidly growing technology at the forefront of sustainable chemistry, leveraging the ability of microorganisms to catalyze electrochemical reactions to synthesize valuable compounds from renewable energy sources. The reduction of CO2 is a major target application for MES, but research in this area has been stifled, especially with the use of direct electron transfer (DET)-based microbial systems. The major fundamental hurdle that needs to be overcome is the low efficiency of CO2 reduction largely attributed to minimal microbial access to CO2 owing to its low solubility in the electrolyte. With their tunable physical …

Gender In The Making Of The Constitution: Proposals For A Feminist Inquiry Into Indian Constitutional History, Achyut Chetan
Gender In The Making Of The Constitution: Proposals For A Feminist Inquiry Into Indian Constitutional History, Achyut Chetan
National Law School Journal
A feminist inquiry into the framing of the Indian Constitution must retrieve and see the interventions of the women members of the Constituent Assembly for what they historically represent, namely, a feminist authorial voice that was developed over a period of time by the pre-Independence women’s movement in India. For a proper understanding of this voice, we must understand the gendered character of the Constituent Assembly, its architecture, its procedures, the dynamics of the gendered relations among its members, and above all, the performative aspects of the debates. This inquiry must also investigate the language employed by the members and …

Generative AI is booming. This technology offers amazing opportunities for growth in various business sectors and creates the opportunity for swift progress on medical innovations, climate change, world hunger, and innumerable other areas. AI also poses a number of challenges, though, such as replacing human workers and exacerbating pernicious biases. Another major concern about generative AI is singularity-the idea that this technology could surpass human intelligence and subjugate us or render us extinct. Although some commentators discount this possibility, the fact that AI experts such as Geoffrey Hinton, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk share the singularity concern should at least …

Reaching A 'Breaking Point' - Women’S Experiences Of Caring In Ireland During Covid-19, Cliona Loughnane, Mary Hayes
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
The inequitable division of care between women and men has been central to the perpetuation of gender inequalities in Ireland and internationally. COVID-19 brought new visibility to the caring needs of society and underlined the need for personal and political structures and supports which account for care. During Ireland’s first lockdown, many women were caring for their families and homes, working in paid employment, providing home-schooling and supporting loved ones outside the home. In May 2020, the Women’s Experiences of Caring during COVID-19 online survey sought to capture the experiences of women providing informal, unpaid care during the pandemic. 85% …

Exploring What Is Old And What Is New About Trauma-Informed Care: Implications For Child Welfare Practice., Maria Lotty
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Trauma-informed care is becoming increasing part of discourse in child welfare practice. This paper explores the current debates and offers some critical reflections relevant for trauma-informed care implementation in child welfare practice. Firstly, the paper discusses the lack of conceptual clarity of a shared understanding for both trauma and trauma-informed care posing challenges for implementation and assessing evidence. Then, it explores the proposed paradigm shift of trauma-informed care in a child welfare practice context. The paper then explores aspects of trauma-informed care that may support newer ways of understanding experiences and interventions. Then, explores aspects of trauma-informed care that may …

The Additionality Double Standard, James Salzman, David Weisbach
The Additionality Double Standard, James Salzman, David Weisbach

Carbon offsets are widely criticized for lacking additionality. The public debate, how- ever, has failed to recognize that the problem of additionality goes far beyond offsets. It arises any time the government subsidizes an activity. Programs with longer histories than offsets and far more money at stake offer valuable lessons for managing lack of additionality in offsets. The article sets out the current efforts to prove offset additionality, explains why major gov- ernment programs present comparable additionality challenges, and show why other programs’ problems of additionality are perceived as significantly different than those for offsets. We examine the toolkit used …

The Natural Law Origins Of Private And Public Law, Richard Epstein
Articles
This article attempts to counter the widespread skepticism that surrounds any appeal to natural law principles, starting with Roman law at one end and the appeal to general law under Swift v. Tyson on the other. It steers a systematic middle course between moral absolutism, which treats all relationships as fixed and immutable, and modern realist positions that insist the infinite variety of legal approaches to most legal problems proves that there is no solid core to either natural law or general law. The natural law positions set out the basic relationships for marriage and family, for alluvion and avulsion …
The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Huq
The Trouble With Classifications, Aziz Huq
Articles
The Supreme Court relies increasingly on anticlassification rules to implement the Constitution’s various commands of evenhanded state treatment. These rules direct attention to whether an instance of a forbidden classification is present on the face of a challenged law. They contain two necessary steps. First, a court defines a general category of impermissible terms. Second, a court ascertains whether an instance of the category is found in enacted text—so triggering the familiar strict scrutiny analysis. So defined, anticlassification rules now dominate equal protection, free speech, “dormant” Commerce Clause, and even free exercise jurisprudence. The Roberts Court celebrates these doctrinal tests …

This study explores how discussing metaphors for AI can help build awareness of the frames that shape our understanding of AI systems, particularly large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. Given the pressing need to teach “critical AI literacy”, discussion of metaphor provides an opportunity for inquiry and dialogue with space for nuance, playfulness, and critique. Using a collaborative autoethnographic methodology, we analyzed metaphors from a range of sources, and reflected on them individually according to seven questions, then met and discussed our interpretations. We then analyzed how our reflections contributed to the three kinds of literacies delineated in Selber’s multiliteracies …
