Attitude Changes Among College Students Post-Pandemic, Alex J. Goncalo, Nicholas S. Zambrotta
Attitude Changes Among College Students Post-Pandemic, Alex J. Goncalo, Nicholas S. Zambrotta
Modern Psychological Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic forced students across the nation to attend school virtually and thus dramatically altered the college experience for many students. Stay at home mandates and loss of social interaction may have contributed to increased isolation and poor mental health. Although mandates have been lifted, and normal college life has resumed in most places, it is unknown if a lingering social impact was left on college students. Numerous studies provide evidence through in-depth examinations indicating altered mental health and psychological behavior of adults, specifically college aged individuals. The present study measured happiness, optimism, and psychological well-being in a sample …

Documented Outcomes Of Informal Caregivers Delivering Home-Based Interventions To Persons Living With Dementia: A Scoping Review, Andrea H. Meller
Social Work Theses - Archive
Most people living with dementia in the United States reside at home with informal caregivers. Yet research regarding non-pharmacological interventions for persons living with dementia is mainly conducted in institutional settings. Also, research into the impacts of interventions for persons with dementia on informal caregivers is scarce. This scoping review aims to map the breadth of literature on outcomes of informal caregivers delivering home-based interventions to people with dementia through the lens of the stress process model. Using the Arskey & O’Malley framework, an initial database search yielded 3,977 studies of which 22 were included in this review. Results revealed …

Exploring The Process Of Seeking Informal Social Support For Intimate Partner Violence Among African Immigrants Residing In The United States, Ricka Olga Mammah
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Intimate partner violence against women is a pervasive global issue. For African immigrants in the United States, IPV continues to be a social problem, with many survivors seeking support from their informal networks. Informal networks refer to the social connections and relationships that individuals have outside of formal or professional settings, such as family members, friends, and acquaintances who provide emotional, practical, and social support. However, various cultural, religious, social, and legal barriers can make seeking informal social support for IPV challenging. To improve interventions designed to reach this vulnerable population, more inquiry is needed into how African immigrant survivors …
The Validity Of Trade Restrictions On Artificial Intelligence Technology Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade's National Security Exception, Isabelle Brundieck
The Validity Of Trade Restrictions On Artificial Intelligence Technology Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade's National Security Exception, Isabelle Brundieck
American University International Law Review
This Comment argues that the U.S. restrictions on the export of semiconductors and other AI technology to China do not violate the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994). Instead, such measures are legitimate expressions under GATT 1994’s Article XXI national security exception, which allows a country to break other articles within the agreement if necessary to protect the country’s essential national security interests. Given the national security risks associated with the rise of AI technology and the likelihood that such technology will be supplied to a military enterprise, the current trade restrictions qualify for the exception. However, …
Amnesty Laws In Modern Peace Agreements: An Analysis Of The Northern Ireland Legacy Act Under International Law, Mckenzie Gallagher
Amnesty Laws In Modern Peace Agreements: An Analysis Of The Northern Ireland Legacy Act Under International Law, Mckenzie Gallagher

In September 2023, the United Kingdom passed the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act (“Legacy Act”), which grants amnesty to anyone who discloses information regarding murders, disappearances, or other unsolved crimes during the period known as “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland. The Legacy Act’s amnesty provision is expected to hinder the peace process in Northern Ireland and in turn, avert accountability for serious international crimes. This Comment considers to what extent the Legacy Act’s amnesty provision violates the Good Friday Agreement, the peace accord ending decades of conflict in Northern Ireland, the European Convention on Human Rights, the United …
Seed Patents: Enabling Innovation Beyond Biological Deposits, Ellaina Sanders
Seed Patents: Enabling Innovation Beyond Biological Deposits, Ellaina Sanders
American University Law Review
In J.E.M. Ag Supply, Inc. v. Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., the Supreme Court held that new sexually reproducing plant varieties are patentable subject matter. This allowed breeders and seed companies to protect their intellectual property in new seeds by obtaining utility patents so long as they meet the other statutory requirements, such as enablement. Unlike other intellectual property protection for new plant varieties, utility patents require the patent disclosure to include enough information that a person of ordinary skill in the art could make and use the invention without undue experimentation. In In re Wands, the Federal Circuit …

Mitochondrial function analysis is a well-established method used in preclinical and clinical investigations to assess pathophysiological changes in various disease states, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although there are multiple approaches to assess mitochondrial function, one common method involves respirometric assays utilizing either Clark-type oxygen electrodes or fluorescent-based Seahorse analysis (Agilent). However, these functional analysis methods are typically limited to the availability of freshly isolated tissue samples due to the compromise of the electron transport chain (ETC) upon storage, caused by freeze-thaw-mediated breakdown of mitochondrial membranes. In this study, we propose and refine a method for evaluating electron flux through …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive
Separation science is a rapidly evolving field, where routine analyses are now done at speeds and efficiencies not thought to be possible several years ago. The tangential field of green analytical chemistry is evolving at an even faster rate and can be considered to be in its infancy stage. As green analytical chemistry is better understood, the greenness of a method will be considered during standard method development just as resolution, sensitivity, and efficiency are considered now. The first portion of this dissertation focuses on the development of mathematical and pragmatic methods to minimize the analytical method greenness score, and …

Total Synthesis Of Novel Core Modified Pleuromutilin Analogs And Studies Towards The Total Synthesis Of (€“)-Lomaiviticin A, Mikaela Mary Dibello
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In the first chapter, I describe the development of a modular synthetic route that allows for the de novo synthesis of novel pleuromutilin analogs, including analogs with modified cores. (+)-Pleuromutilin (11) is a diterpene fungal metabolite that displays moderate antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive pathogens. Semisynthetic modifications of 11 resulted in derivatives with improved activity and pharmacological properties. However, the majority of derivatization studies have focused on modifying the periphery of the molecule. Studies on the impact of structural modifications to the tricyclic core have been limited as this type of diversification is inaccessible via semisynthesis. Herein, I outline our development …

Centralizing Pharmaceutical Innovation, Sapna Kumar
Centralizing Pharmaceutical Innovation, Sapna Kumar

The United States has a mostly decentralized system for promoting new medicine development. By offering patents and regulatory exclusivities, the government incentivizes pharmaceutical companies to invent and bring to market new medicines. Although this development model offers benefits for promoting innovation, it comes at a cost: Market-based incentives lead companies to prioritize research and development (“R&D”) for medicines that offer a safe path to profitability, as opposed to those that offer the greatest social benefit. In particular, pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to invest in R&D for critically-needed antibiotics and infectious disease vaccines—both of which are difficult to develop and provide …

Examining The Synergy Of Curcumin And Cisplatin In Osteosarcoma Cells, Ellis Stafford
Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that is especially difficult to treat due to its ability to rapidly metastasize, with an average survival rate of 70% if caught before metastasis but 30% after metastasis. The current standard of treatment, if caught before metastasis, is surgery. However, after metastasis, cisplatin is the chemotherapy of choice, which is often ineffective. This study aims to improve treatment strategies by combining a chemotherapy, cisplatin, with curcumin. The supplement used for this study is curcumin, which is a biologically active ingredient in turmeric. Curcumin has shown promising effects in cancer treatment through its ability …

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
Sanfilippo Syndrome (MPS III) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder. This disease is prevalent in children at a young age. The gene that affects Sanfilippo is the HGSNAT gene which normally breaks down and recycles heparan sulfate, a large sugar molecule. Heparan sulfate accumulates and causes damage to the cells of the body, particularly in the brain and spinal cord by blocking normal lysosomal function. The buildup of heparan sulfate in brain and spinal cord cells leads to progressive neurological symptoms, including cognitive decline, movement disorders, and behavioral issues.
Previous work done in our lab showed that when we …

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)
By utilizing natural materials, living shorelines contribute to coastal resilience. While traditional concrete seawalls stabilize the land and reduce erosion, living shorelines do so too while also providing a variety of species with a place to live, maintaining or enhancing habitats, and improving the quality and flow of water. Living shorelines are made up of naturally occurring materials like plants, sand, shells and rocks. The Camp Wilkes’ Living Shoreline project entails building 150 linear feet of breakwater along Camp Wilkes’ south facing shoreline in the Back Bay of Biloxi, northwest in the city of Biloxi, Mississippi.

This perspective article examines the relationship between human genomics research and health equity, highlighting persistent disparities in the design, participation, and implementation of genomic science. Although genomics has substantial potential to improve disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, the benefits of genomic advances have not been equitably distributed across populations. Historically, genomic research has disproportionately relied on datasets derived from individuals of European ancestry, resulting in limited generalizability of findings and the risk of exacerbating existing health disparities. Drawing on insights from a National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) workshop and a targeted literature review, the authors identify key challenges and …
