The Contingencies Of Chinese Diasporic Identities In Charlson Ong’S Speculative Fiction, Joseph Ching Velasco
The Contingencies Of Chinese Diasporic Identities In Charlson Ong’S Speculative Fiction, Joseph Ching Velasco
Kritika Kultura
Charlson Ong’s award-winning novel An Embarrassment of Riches (2000) creatively narrates the history of the Chinese diaspora as an overdetermined event in the Southeast Asian Region. The novel explores the politics of belonging, displacement, identity, and territory through a/n (re)imagined nation built primarily on Philippine historical and cultural contingencies. This essay seeks to explore the junctures and vicissitudes of the Chinese diaspora in the region through the following questions: How is hybridity manifested by selected characters and other cultural elements in the narrative? Second, how do the perceptions of homeland, marked by ambivalence and contradiction, operate in the narrative? And …
Hallyu And The Traditional Cultural Genes Of Korea, Ki-Duk Kim, Sang-Joon Bae
Hallyu And The Traditional Cultural Genes Of Korea, Ki-Duk Kim, Sang-Joon Bae
Kritika Kultura
Since the year 2000, South Korea has been the propagator of the Hallyu (Korean Wave) that has spread across the world, demonstrating the country’s cultural potential. The subject of Hallyu can be approached from several perspectives, first by identifying its origins, current status, and trends by genre; by looking at its effects and the measures that can sustain the Hallyu phenomenon; and also by examining Hallyu trends by country. This paper analyzes Korea’s traditional cultural genes that affected the creation and spread of Hallyu from a humanistic point of view. The three factors for this analysis are: i) community and …
Islam And Local Culture: The Peril Of State Violence And Hallyu Fandom In Indonesia (With Reference To Palestine), Ingyu Oh
Kritika Kultura
The invasion of Hallyu (or the Korean Wave) subculture in Indonesia created a new pattern of gendered cultural consumption in the largest Islam country in the world. The most ardent Hallyu supporters in Indonesia are women who are organizing massive urban fan gatherings, K-pop concerts, and group tours to Seoul. With a long and devastating record of state violence on Marxists, Chinese, and women in general, current public tolerance to Hallyu by the Indonesian government seems flimsy as female Hallyu fandom is threatening the mainstream Islamic value of feminine subservience. Although the strength of the local culture vis-à-vis Islam in …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Dyes used in industry, especially textile dyes, are one of the water pollutants that receive much attention because they are potentially toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and generally challenging to decompose naturally. Textile dyes from wastewater can be removed through coagulation-flocculation. However, conventional coagulation-flocculation based on Fe and Al salts and synthetic polymers often leaves residual pollution. In this research, the performance of the new biopolymer-based flocculant, namely starch-ethylene glycol dimetacrylate-chitosan (SEC), which can act as coagulants and flocculants in solid-liquid separation of textile dyes, has been optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) approach. The influences of several independent variables, such …

Breast Cancer Area Identification In Mammograms Using Expectation Maximization Gaussian Mixture Model, Rizki Khoirun Nisa, Dian Kurniasari, Favorisen R. Lumbanraja, Warsono Warsono
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Breast cancer accounts for 25% of all cancer diagnoses and 16% of cancer-related deaths among women globally, with high mortality rates due to late diagnosis. Early detection relies on imaging techniques such as mammography, histopathology, and breast ultrasound, with mammography being the gold standard due to its proven to detect breast cancer, thus it is effective for breast cancer treatment. However, mammogram images often produce noise and artefacts, complicating early-stage cancer detection and emphasizing the need for advanced image processing. Clustering algorithms such as K-means and Expectation Maximization - Gaussian Mixture Model (EM-GMM) have shown potential in image segmentation. This …

Cooper Medical School of Rowan University Departmental Research
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging males, but its underlying pathogenesis remains unclear. Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) and its receptors (S1PRs) play important roles in various diseases, while less studied in prostate. Current study attempts to clarify the expression and functional activities of S1P/S1PRs in the prostate. We discovered that S1P/S1PRs were richly expressed in the prostate, with S1PR1/2/3 localized in the epithelial/stromal compartments, while S1PR4/5 were less expressed. In vitro, S1P/S1PR1/S1PR3 promoted cell proliferation via AKT and ERK1/2 pathways, S1P/S1PR2/S1PR3 enhanced contraction of WPMY-1 cells and human prostate via RhoA/ROCK pathway, while S1P/S1PR1/S1PR2/S1PR3 alleviated the inflammation …
Don't Forget To Water The Plants: Crafting A Sustainable Framework For Space Launches Under The Inflation Reduction Act, Wyatt Modracek
Don't Forget To Water The Plants: Crafting A Sustainable Framework For Space Launches Under The Inflation Reduction Act, Wyatt Modracek
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) makes great strides toward limiting the consumption of fossil fuels through the incentivization of research and development of sustainable aviation fuel. However, the IRA serves as a reactive measure to the problem of air pollution while missing an opportunity to curtail another coming issue of pollution: space launches. While not as pervasive as commercial air travel, space launches and outer space as a whole are becoming a billion-dollar market with space mining, astro-tourism, and interplanetary travel. The rate of launches has no sign of slowing down, and rather than wait to pass a reactive measure …
The Illegal Trade Of Marine Wildlife: A Review Of Consequences And Strategies To Combat The Trade, Kaitlyn Shaw
The Illegal Trade Of Marine Wildlife: A Review Of Consequences And Strategies To Combat The Trade, Kaitlyn Shaw
Seattle Journal of Technology, Environmental, & Innovation Law
An enduring challenge in assessing the risk of extinction for marine animals lies in our need to consume them. Many nations, including the United States, invest substantial resources in supporting fishery businesses to locate, harvest, and market ocean wildlife, with comparatively small allocations for their protection. Despite the existence of numerous state, national, and international laws dictating how and when animals can be harvested, achieving sustainable catch levels remains elusive. Especially when adding in the constant battle against organized crime groups, combatting the marine wildlife trade almost seems impractical. This comment analyzes and argues for a more comprehensive approach to …

Integrating Physics And Deep Learning For Transmission-Less Attenuation Compensation In Clinical Spect, Zitong Yu
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Attenuation compensation (AC) is beneficial for visual interpretation and serves as a prerequisite for quantification tasks in single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. However, conventional AC methods typically rely on a separate X-ray CT component, leading to multiple challenges. In this context, studies have shown that scatter-window projection data contains information to estimate the attenuation distribution. Furthermore, large amounts of SPECT emission data in both photopeak and scatter-energy windows and corresponding CT scans are available. The ability of deep learning (DL) to model complex relationships by leveraging large datasets motivates its use for transmission-less AC in SPECT. Building upon the …

Interactions Of The Sars-Cov-2 Viral Genome 3’-Untranslated Region With Viral And Host Rnas, Caleb Frye, Mihaela Rita Mihailescu
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the characterization of RNA-RNA interactions within the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genome and with host microRNAs. As the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), SARS-CoV-2 has evolved rapidly since its appearance. This has warranted prompt characterization of the virus particularly of its single stranded RNA (ssRNA) genome. By using a combination of bioinformatics, biophysics, and/or biological assays, we analyzed the SARS-CoV-2 viral genomic RNA and uncovered interactions of genomic RNA with host RNAs, highlighting an underutilized method of targeting RNA viruses. We showed here that the conserved elements in the viral genomic …

Quantifying Interpretation Reproducibility In Vision Transformer Models With Tavac., Yue Zhao, Dylan Agyemang, Yang Liu, J Matthew Mahoney, Sheng Li
Faculty Research 2024
Deep learning algorithms can extract meaningful diagnostic features from biomedical images, promising improved patient care in digital pathology. Vision Transformer (ViT) models capture long-range spatial relationships and offer robust prediction power and better interpretability for image classification tasks than convolutional neural network models. However, limited annotated biomedical imaging datasets can cause ViT models to overfit, leading to false predictions due to random noise. To address this, we introduce Training Attention and Validation Attention Consistency (TAVAC), a metric for evaluating ViT model overfitting and quantifying interpretation reproducibility. By comparing high-attention regions between training and testing, we tested TAVAC on four public …
