Titanium nitride and vanadium nitride–carbon-based composite systems, TiN/C and VN/C, were prepared using a new synthesis method based on the thermal decomposition of titanyl tetraphenyl porphyrin (TiOTPP) and vanadyl tetraphenyl porphyrin (VOTPP), respectively. The structure of the TiN/C and VN/C composite materials, as well as their precursors, were characterized using Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction (XRD), X-Ray energy dispersive (EDS) and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Morphologies of the TiN/C and VN/C composites were examined by means of scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron (TEM) microscopy. The synthesis of the non-metalated tetraphenyl porphyrin, the titanium, and vanadium tetraphenyl porphyrin complexes …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The development of biosensing systems that leverage the unique properties of magnetic nanoparticles and the high sensitivity of magnetic sensors for detecting biomolecules and cancer cells has been an active area of research. However, challenges remain in detecting and differentiating the magnetic signals of biomarkers made from nanoparticles that have similar sizes but distinct magnetic properties. Additionally, overcoming the reduction in detection sensitivity caused by non-magnetic coatings on magnetic nanoparticles remains a key hurdle. Concurrently, there is a pressing need to develop advanced magnetic sensor technologies that can enhance existing healthcare monitoring systems and enable more precise, real-time diagnostics. This dissertation …

Trastuzumab-deruxtecan (T-DXd) has demonstrated intracranial efficacy; however, safety and efficacy data remains limited with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). A multi-institutional review was performed with HER2+ or HER2-low metastatic breast cancer treated with T-DXd and SRS for active brain metastases. We identified 215 lesions treated over 48 SRS courses in 34 patients. Median follow up from T-DXd initiation was 13.9 months. The cumulative incidence of symptomatic radiation necrosis at 24 months per lesion was 2.1% and per patient 11%. The 12-month LC was 97%. HER2-low was associated with worse distant intracranial control (DIC) (adjusted HR 2.5, 95% CI 1.1-5.6, p = 0.03) …

Dogs are utilized in forensic science for their extensive scent detection capabilities. They are often considered the “gold standard” in field detection for targets such as illicit drugs and explosives. Despite their prevalence in the field, relatively little is known about how dogs interact with and transport volatile organic compounds through their olfactory system. In this study, two groups of dogs were utilized – Sport detection dogs (n=19) that participate in the National Association of Canine Scent Work and have achieved advanced standing through training and successful search competitions and law enforcement explosive detection dogs (n=8) which were included for …

Plasmodium, the causative agent of malaria, infects hepatocytes prior to establishing a symptomatic blood stage infection. During this liver stage development, parasites reside in a parasitophorous vacuole (PV), whose membrane acts as the critical interface between the parasite and the host cell. It is well-established that host cell autophagy-related processes significantly impact the development of Plasmodium liver stages. Expression of genes related to autophagy and lysosomal biogenesis is orchestrated by transcription factor EB (TFEB). In this study, we explored the activation of host cell TFEB in Plasmodium berghei-infected cells during the liver stage of the parasite. Our results …

Introduction: Accurate report of stool form is essential to diagnosis and assessment of treatment response. The modified Bristol Stool Form Scale for Children (mBSFS-C) classifies stool form into 5 types and is reliable and valid. However, a direct comparison of provider's and children's ratings using the mBSFS-C vs the traditional BSFS that uses 7 stool form types has not been done.
Methods: Pediatric gastroenterology providers and children rated the same 35 stool photographs, reflecting diverse stool forms, using both scales. The order of photograph presentation and scale use were randomized. For each photograph, the most common rating (modal rating) was …

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are a significant cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. The lack of a reproducible culture system hindered the study of HuNoV replication and pathogenesis for almost a half-century. This barrier was overcome with our successful cultivation of multiple HuNoV strains in human intestinal enteroids (HIEs), which has significantly advanced HuNoV research. We optimized culture media conditions and generated genetically modified HIE cultures to enhance HuNoV replication in HIEs. Building upon these achievements, we now present new insights into this culture system, which involve testing different media, unique HIE lines, and additional virus strains. HuNoV infectivity …

BACKGROUND: As previously published, the MMPOWER-3 clinical trial did not demonstrate a significant benefit of elamipretide treatment in a genotypically diverse population of adults with primary mitochondrial myopathy (PMM). However, the prespecified subgroup of subjects with disease-causing nuclear DNA (nDNA) pathogenic variants receiving elamipretide experienced an improvement in the six-minute walk test (6MWT), while the cohort of subjects with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) pathogenic variants showed no difference versus placebo. These published findings prompted additional genotype-specific post hoc analyses of the MMPOWER-3 trial. Here, we present these analyses to further investigate the findings and to seek trends and commonalities among those …

Several studies have shown interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a chronic condition that poses challenges in both diagnosis and treatment, is associated with painful pelvic floor muscles (PFM) and altered neural drive to these muscles. However, its pathophysiology could also involve other alterations in the electrical activity of PFM motor units (MUs). Studying these alterations could provide novel insights into IC/BPS and help its clinical management. This study aimed to characterize PFM activity at the MU level in women with IC/BPS and pelvic floor myalgia using high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG). Signals were recorded from 15 patients and 15 healthy controls …

Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
That the ideal way to communicate and reach understanding is by speaking the same language, is a widespread view: it is rarely questioned in debates concerning language, (intercultural) communication, and interpretation. I shall argue that Hans-Georg Gadamer, too, suffers from this common language “syndrome.” Donald Davidson is one of the few philosophers who explicitly uttered qualms about the necessity of a common language. Davidson critiques Gadamer’s common language idea, and rightly claims that a common language is not needed for communication and understanding. I show that Davidson has been unable to develop this insight fruitfully and underestimates the importance of …

Obesity, by any standard, is a global health crisis. Both genetic and dietary contributions to the development and maintenance of obesity were integral factors of our experimental design. As mutations of the melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4R) are the leading monogenetic cause of obesity, MC4R haploinsufficient rats were fed a range of dietary fat (0–12 %) in a longitudinal design. Physiological and motivational assessments were performed using a locomotor task, a 5-choice sucrose preference task, an operant task with fixed and progressive ratios, as well as a distraction operant task. Dendritic spine morphology of medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the nucleus …

Red harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex barbatus (Smith, 1858) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), common in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, are known to gather seeds from areas around their nests and store the seeds inside their nests for later consumption. As these ants often nest in and near agricultural fields, some of these seeds may be from crops and may also be infected with fungal plant pathogens. These pathogens can degrade seed coats and may cause the seeds to rot within the ant nests, decreasing storage time and potentially spreading the pathogen to other stored seeds. We studied how head mold, a …

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes a common congenital infection leading to long-term neurological impairments including brain, cochlear, and ocular pathology. Infection of newborn mice with murine (M)CMV is an established model of neuropathology caused by congenital CMV infection, with recent work suggesting that brain pathology may be driven by immune responses. In the eye, however, CMV retinitis is thought to result from virus-driven necrosis in the absence of T cell responses. We found that MCMV infection of newborn mice recapitulates human eye disease after congenital CMV infection, including focal chorioretinitis, inflamed vasculature, and disrupted blood-retinal barriers. Moreover, infection drove extensive T …
