Host Response To Implantation Of A Poly N-Isopropylarylamide Injectable Cell Therapy Vehicle, Cole Matthew Burk
Host Response To Implantation Of A Poly N-Isopropylarylamide Injectable Cell Therapy Vehicle, Cole Matthew Burk
Master's Theses
There is a need to develop novel and effective therapies targeting end-stage peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). Inducing collateral arteriogenesis is a possible novel treatment that produces a natural bypass for blood flow, a promising solution to the long-term issues seen with current treatments. Regenerative therapies, and progenitor cells specifically, have demonstrated great promise in repair after injury and disease. While most progenitor or stem cells have poor efficacy in this context, muscle progenitor cells, or myoblasts, have encouraging results. Myoblasts enhance arteriogenesis and secrete cytokines or chemokines that recruit monocytes to injury sites. Implanting these adherent cells in a …

Fat Deposition, Β- Carotene, And Vitamin A Metabolism In Bulls, Steers, And Heifers, Tesla Trammell
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Research highlights the impact of Vitamin A on cattle growth and meat quality. Supplementing Vitamin A early in life has been linked to enhanced IMF content and growth rates in calves, especially when administered at birth or during early developmental stages. This is attributed to the role of the ZFP423 gene in adipocyte formation, with studies noting its involvement in the development of IMF during the finishing phase.
This study aims to add to the present research by evaluate the effect of calves’ sexual class on blood β-carotene and Vitamin A before weaning. The second study evaluated the β- carotene …

Subconcussive Impacts And Their Effect On Attention, Scott York
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In recent years, concussions have become a focal point for athletic competition and athletes beginning in grade school. The long-term implications of concussions are becoming more widely known and accepted; however, there are still areas of literature that are lacking. One of these areas is subconcussive impacts. Subconcussive impacts are defined as impacts that do not meet the threshold for diagnosed concussion but may still have clinical impact. While concussions and their effects on cognition have been examined heavily, these subconcussive impacts, and their effects, have been studied less so. The purpose of this study is to examine the possible …

(R2095) On Discrete Hypoexponential Distribution And Integer-Valued Autoregressive Process, K. Krishnakumari, Dais George
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Discrete distributions provide a substantive contribution in modeling real world frame work. Though a lot of discrete distributions are available in literature, they are inappropriate to model many practical situations. The conventional discrete distributions like geometric, Negative Binomial and Poisson have limited applications in modeling count and lifetime data. This paper introduces a new two parameter discrete distribution namely, discrete hypoexponential distribution by discretizing the well known hypoexponential distribution. Various distributional and structural properties of the proposed distribution are studied. We introduce a first order auto regressive process with the newly proposed distribution as marginal and study the properties. Depending …

(R2099) Boundedness And Square Integrability In Neutral Differential Equations With Delay And Exponential Stability In Nonlinear Differential Equations Of Third-Order, Fatima Abdellaoui, Mebrouk Rahmane
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The Lyapunov second method is an eigenvalue-based technique which consist of finding a Lyapunov function candidate for studying the stability of dynamical systems which is hard to deal with especially in most of nonlinear cases. Studying the stability and some of other qualitative behaviors based on the Lyapunov second method is research topic of actuality because of the wide range of applications of the differential equations. Many authors in the literature have used the second method of Lyapunov in the study of some qualitative behaviors from which the stability, the boundedness and the square integrability of solutions for various kinds …

The Price Of Precision: Significant Figures And The Student Experience, Ryan Michael Britt
Dissertations
For students pursuing careers in medicine and science, general chemistry is often viewed as a gatekeeper course. Students struggle with general chemistry for a variety of reasons, one of the most common being mathematical difficulties. Compared to other lower division STEM courses, mathematical computation in general chemistry represents a unique challenge for the student due to the special emphasis placed on reporting answers to the proper degree of precision using significant figure (SF) rules. Although these rules feature in nearly every undergraduate chemistry course, their impact on the student experience of learning chemistry has never before been studied.
The purpose …

The Australian Experience With Environmental Offsets: An Illusory Tool For Addressing Biodiversity Loss And Climate Change?, Robert J. Fowler, Phillipa C. Mccormack, Alexandra S. Wawryk, Margaret Castles, Emily Whenan
UC Law Environmental Journal
Recent studies, including by administrative integrity bodies, Parliamentary committees and former ‘insiders’ of Australian regulatory bodies, show serious shortcomings in the operation of biodiversity and carbon offsets in Australia. Specifically, the benefits attributed to the offset mechanism in both contexts have been criticised as illusory in practice. This leads us to question whether it is possible to accomplish carbon emission reduction and biodiversity conservation goals through a governance framework that includes offsetting. We assess the evolution of offsets as a regulatory and voluntary mechanism, offering a critical perspective on the Australian experience. Australia has been an enthusiastic early adopter of …

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorder. In addition to the autonomic and peripheral sensory neuropathies that challenge patient survival, one of the most debilitating symptoms affecting patients' quality of life is progressive blindness resulting from the steady loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).Within the FD community, there is a concerted effort to develop treatments to prevent the loss of RGCs. However, the mechanisms underlying the death of RGCs are not well understood. To study the mechanisms underlying RGC death, Pax6-cre;Elp1loxp/loxp male and female mice and postmortem retinal tissue from an FD patient were used to …

Early Referral For Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing Therapy For Treatment Of Trauma-Induced Anxiety And Emotional Distress, Christa Jones
Doctoral Projects
Trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress are significant health concerns affecting millions globally and resulting in significant healthcare burdens. Despite the considerable efforts in addressing problems, most high-risk cases often go unidentified or unaddressed promptly. Besides standard trauma diagnosis, treatment, and management protocols, some patients often require specialized support. Recently, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has emerged as a promising alternative for treating anxiety, trauma, and emotional distress conditions, yet many patients who are at high risk are often not identified early for referral. Additionally, many healthcare facilities, especially those in rural settings, fail to include appropriate screening tools.

Higher education institutions (HEIs) are complex and intricate systems of people, processes, and practices. HEI practices and processes are often extended through strategic partnerships and external collaborations, increasing their capacity or ability to obtain their stated goals. This notion extends to minority-serving institutions, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It is important to understand whether partnerships have the capacity to meet their goals, especially if there are risks for minority-serving institutions and those traditionally marginalized, which is a problem. The purpose of this qualitative organizational case study was to explore the evidence of critical consciousness and capacity building in a …

Faculty Research 2024
Precision medicine has the potential to provide more accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment and timely prevention strategies by considering patients' biological makeup. However, this cannot be realized without integrating clinical and omics data in a data-sharing framework that achieves large sample sizes. Systems that integrate clinical and genetic data from multiple sources are scarce due to their distinct data types, interoperability, security and data ownership issues. Here we present a secure framework that allows immutable storage, querying and analysis of clinical and genetic data using blockchain technology. Our platform allows clinical and genetic data to be harmonized by combining them under …

Electrochemical Techniques For The Treatment Of Source-Separated Urine, Philip Arve
Electrochemical Techniques For The Treatment Of Source-Separated Urine, Philip Arve
All Dissertations
Urine makes up approximately 1% of the total volume of municipal wastewater, but it contributes up to 75% of the nitrogen and 50% of the phosphorus received by publicly owned treatment works (POTWs). These elements are essential nutrients for plant growth and trigger algal blooms when released into natural bodies of water, resulting in rapid ecological degradation. Removing these nutrients from municipal wastewater is energy intensive and often operationally sensitive. The past few decades have seen an increase in focus on the source-separation and side-stream treatment of urine.
Urine characteristics differ greatly from those of municipal wastewater, presenting an opportunity …

The Mongolian Remodeling And The Structure Of Anoplocephalid Cestode Diversity, Mackenzie Grover
All NMU Master's Theses
Ecological disruption plays an important role in structuring diversity of flora, fauna, and their parasites. At the end of the Eocene, climatic change across Asia resulted in a faunal turnover (the Mongolian Remodeling) as rodents diversified and larger mammals declined. Throughout the Oligocene, the landscape in Asia was characterized by episodic climatic and landscape changes resulting in pulses of rodent diversification. The role of historical ecological disruption in Central Asia in structuring the diversity of parasites of small rodents has not been thoroughly investigated. The hyper-diverse Paranoplocephala species complex (family: Anoplocephalidae) infect rodents throughout the Holarctic and present an opportunity …

Elucidating The Mechanism Of Interleukin-17a Signaling In The Pathogenesis Of West Nile Virus, Farzana Nazneen
Dissertations
West Nile Virus (WNV), a neurotropic flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes, is a leading cause of viral encephalitis in the United States and remains a significant public health concern. Unfortunately, no vaccine or therapeutic intervention is available against WNV infection. Previous studies, including ours, demonstrated that interleukin-17A (IL-17A) signaling increases the cytotoxic potential of CD8+ T cells to facilitate WNV and parasite clearance; however, the molecular mechanism is not understood. IL-17 receptor C (IL-17RC) is an obligatory co-receptor with IL-17 receptor A (IL-17RA) for signaling induced by IL-17A, IL-17A/F, and IL-17F. In this study, we found that IL-17RC deficient ( …
