The New Wave Of Designer Drugs: A Review For Criminal Justice And Forensic Professionals, Matthew D. Krasowski, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

In recent decades, synthetic or designer drugs have continuously emerged like weeds. The manufacturers and distributors of synthetic substances are encouraged, at least in part, by the fuzzy legal status and low manufacturing cost of these drugs. Removing the threat of designer drugs has proven problematic for U.S. law enforcement because many of these designer drugs remain legal until the substance’s harm can be clearly established. To make matters worse, designer drugs are often not detected by the drug tests commonly utilized in criminal justice and forensic settings. Going forward, greater awareness of designer drugs by forensic, clinical, and law …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd) And Firesetting Behaviors: A Call On Fire Professionals To Become Fasd-Informed, Jerrod Brown, Cody Charette, Don Porth, Kathi Osmonson

Forensic Scholars Today

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong condition characterized by a diverse set of cognitive, social, and adaptive functioning deficits caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. Despite these pervasive symptoms, individuals with FASD often go undiagnosed and untreated, sometimes resulting in interactions with fire service responders, law enforcement professionals, and other community providers. Case studies, popular media accounts, and interviews with caregivers of children with FASD suggest that this disorder’s symptoms may be a variable to consider in some firesetting cases. As such, fire professionals have the potential to serve a critical role in directing individuals in need of assessment …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (Fasd) And Competency To Stand Trial (Cst) Case Law: A Need For Further Understanding And Research, Jerrod Brown, Anthony P. Wartnik

Forensic Scholars Today

The devastating impact of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) on competency to stand trial is highlighted by summarizing the case law review literature. Although these case law reviews may not be peer-reviewed and might include inaccuracies, case law reviews can illuminate the complexities of accounting for FASD during legal proceedings. In particular, a failure to adequately consider the impact of the cognitive and adaptive symptoms of FASD on a defendant’s competency to stand trial and as a mitigating factor for sentencing have served as the basis of a number of appeals. Here, we provide overviews of a handful of cases, …

Art Therapy And Fasd: A Promising Treatment Approach, Erin Rafferty Bugher, Jerrod Brown Sep 2024

Art Therapy And Fasd: A Promising Treatment Approach, Erin Rafferty Bugher, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by cognitive (e.g., executive function), social (e.g., communication), and adaptive (e.g., decision-making ability) deficits. Because FASD often co-occurs with other psychiatric and substance use disorders, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment can be challenging. Art therapy (AT) is one promising treatment modality for FASD. This is especially true of children who suffer from both FASD and a history of trauma. AT presents many potential benefits for FASD such as improved emotional regulation, relaxation strategies, interpersonal communication skills, self-esteem, and memory functioning. Although additional empirical evaluation is needed, AT has a growing …

Attachment And Trauma-Related Problems: Implications For Criminal Justice And Forensic Mental Health Professionals, Diana Barnes, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

Secure attachment with a caregiver creates a foundation for psychological stability and fosters resilience in the face of future experiences of undue stress. In the face of unavailable, abusive or emotionally disconnected attachment figures, developing children are increasingly vulnerable in ways that deleteriously impact their quality of life and mental health across the life span. Further, the lack of secure attachment in combination with traumatic experiences increases the risk of antisocial and criminal behavior. In light of this pathway to offending behavior, criminal justice and forensic mental health professionals have an opportunity to better recognize the critical significance of disrupted …

Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (Wks) And Deficits Associated With Memory: An Introduction For Clinical And Forensic Professionals, Jerrod Brown, Charlotte Gergh Haanen, Matthew D. Krasowski, Deborah A. Eckberg, Cameron R. Wiley

Forensic Scholars Today

Chronic alcohol abuse has been shown to lead to a number of cognitive, behavioral, and developmental deficits. One of the possible consequences of this abuse is Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome (WKS), a condition characterized by a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1) that impairs various neurological functions, particularly memory and its various stages (i.e., storage and retrieval). Management of WKS requires a deeper understanding of memory processing as well as carefully structured therapy methods that cater to the unique needs of impacted individuals. Therefore, accurate and reliable identification coupled with early intervention strategies for this population is a clinical and forensic priority.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) And The Criminal Justice System: An Introduction For Professionals, Jerrod Brown, Barbara Luskin, Bethany Hastings

Forensic Scholars Today

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. Emerging in early childhood, ASD is characterized by deficits in communication, social interaction, and behavior. As its name suggests, ASD encompasses a broad number of symptoms, deficits, and degrees of severity, and although the majority of individuals with ASD will not become involved in the criminal justice system, the symptoms of ASD can have a debilitating effect in this setting. The familiarization of criminal justice professionals with ASD has the potential to improve short- and long-term outcomes for individuals diagnosed with this disorder.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd) And The Criminal Justice System: Causes, Consequences, And Suggested Communication Approaches, Anthony P. Wartnik, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

Afflicting 2% to 5% of the U.S. population (May et al., 2009), fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are lifelong disorders caused by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). The range of deficits include cognitive (e.g., executive functioning), social (e.g., communication skills), and adaptive dysfunction (e.g., problem-solving ability). The likelihood of involvement in the criminal justice system can be increased by: (a) difficulty thinking in an abstract manner, (b) communication skill deficits, (c) a diminished ability to appropriately express and exhibit empathy, and (d) impulsivity. The cognitive difficulties outlined in this article can result in repeated fights, thefts, thrill seeking behaviors, and even …

Interrogative Suggestibility In People With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd): Neurocognitive And Behavioral Challenges, Erin J. Watts, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the result of prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD is characterized by deficits in adaptive functioning, social skills, learning capacities, emotion regulation, memory, attention, and communication abilities. As a result of these deficits, individuals with FASD may be prone to interrogative suggestibility. This is consistent with Gudjonsson and Clark’s (1986) model, which proposed that interrogative suggestibility is more likely to occur in individuals who experience: (a) a greater sense of uncertainty about the subject matter, (b) stronger interpersonal trust with the interrogator, and (c) an increase in one’s expectations that he or she should know the …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd): Safety Considerations For Caregivers And Professionals, Barb Clark, Jerrod Brown, Nikki Freeman, Anne Russell

Forensic Scholars Today

Acquired as a result of prenatal alcohol exposure, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a set of disorders characterized by physical, cognitive, learning, and behavioral impairments. One of the most challenging aspects of this condition is that people with FASD often struggle to make safe and appropriate choices. This article highlights safety factors that can be implemented by both caregivers and professionals. Consideration of these factors may reduce the likelihood that some people with FASD will come into contact with the criminal justice system.

Understanding Confabulation: An Introduction For Criminal Justice And Mental Health Professionals, Debra Huntley, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

Confabulation is the spontaneous or provoked use of inaccurate information to fill in memory gaps. This phenomenon is distinctly different from lying because there is no intent to deceive. Confabulation can be found in relatively healthy individuals as well as individuals with serious cognitive and psychiatric disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), and Korsakoff’s syndrome). As such, multiple causal pathways may lead to confabulation. Because confabulation can complicate the jobs of anyone working with clients in the mental health or legal systems, professionals should have a greater understanding of confabulation. Confabulation is a term that is surrounded by …

Forensic Scholars Today

The purpose of this paper is to review art therapy (AT) and its effectiveness as a treatment approach for individuals diagnosed with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). In 2008, Gerteisen explored the use of AT as a viable intervention model for individuals affected by FASD. This paper identifies applicable therapeutic AT approaches identified by Gerteisen’s research. The literature review offers a comprehensive overview of FASD and comorbid diagnoses. Finally, this paper presents future research considerations for the use of AT as a successful treatment modality for FASD in all settings.
