Sexual Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities: A Brief Overview, Amanda Fenrich Sep 2024

Sexual Offenders With Intellectual Disabilities: A Brief Overview, Amanda Fenrich

Forensic Scholars Today

This article will provide a brief overview of the literature related to male sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities. Sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities present a unique challenge to correctional and criminal justice professionals for a variety of reasons. Of concern, individuals with intellectual disabilities may go undetected (Marotta, 2015) and can spend many years incarcerated before someone realizes an incarcerated individual has an intellectual disability. In addition, it is not uncommon for this population to have deficits or responsivity needs that make it difficult for them to understand what is being told to them, they may not be able to …

Problematic Pornography Use: A Brief Introduction, Amanda Fenrich Sep 2024

Problematic Pornography Use: A Brief Introduction, Amanda Fenrich

Forensic Scholars Today

The aim of this article is to contribute to the general knowledge pertaining to pornography use as a problematic behavior. Pornography addiction is difficult to define, but what professionals tend to agree on is that pornography use can become a problematic behavior (Harkness, Psych, Mullan, & Blaszczynski, 2015). A recent review of the literature found that approximately 87% of males use pornography each month, and about 58% are watching pornography each week (Brem et al., 2018). Young men are among the top consumers of pornography, and prevalence rates indicate more than 90% of males have looked at pornography in their …

Generations After Us (Undergoing Stress): An Exploration Of Interpersonal Violence And Loss On Psychosocial Functioning At The Parent, Child, And Family Level, Kaleigh Valencia Wilkins Sep 2024

Generations After Us (Undergoing Stress): An Exploration Of Interpersonal Violence And Loss On Psychosocial Functioning At The Parent, Child, And Family Level, Kaleigh Valencia Wilkins

Dissertations

Previous studies propose that interpersonal violence and loss, parenting, and attachment each individually contribute to child and family distress. The following studies aimed to further explore these effects across and within various generational groupings. The first study explored exposure to community violence at the parent level and at the child level in an attempt to understand how such stress impacts parents’ perceptions of family functioning in African-American and Latine families. Findings suggested that family functioning is weakened the most when both a parent and adolescent are exposed and when just a parent was exposed. The second study examined differences in …

“I Really Like The Idea Of Being The Source Of Change”: The Perspectives Of Black And Latine Youth Experiencing Low Income About How Personal Change Occurs In Out-Of-School Group Programs, Kevin Miller Sep 2024

“I Really Like The Idea Of Being The Source Of Change”: The Perspectives Of Black And Latine Youth Experiencing Low Income About How Personal Change Occurs In Out-Of-School Group Programs, Kevin Miller

Dissertations

Structured out-of-school programs (OSPs) can be contexts in which youth can be producers of their own positive change (Eccles & Gootman, 2002). However, despite a considerable body of research documenting the benefits of participating in OSPs, there is a lack of knowledge about how youth of color in low-income communities define positive personal change in OSP settings. As a result, many OSPs and interventions designed for youth of color rely on adult practitioners’ or researchers’ perspectives of the change process, which may weaken program impact and fail to holistically meet youths’ developmental needs. This study uses a critical realist scientific …

Rebuilding Risk Assessment Tools And Evaluating Their Effect On Recidivism In Illinois, Cristina Penate Sep 2024

Rebuilding Risk Assessment Tools And Evaluating Their Effect On Recidivism In Illinois, Cristina Penate

Master's Theses

This study seeks to examine the relationship between alternative measures of criminal history and recidivism in a cohort of convicted individuals released from prison in Illinois between 2010 and 2015. The current study expands on prior research by examining the relationship between prior criminal history and recidivism using alternative measures of both to account for potential bias resulting from differential policing activities that may lead to convictions. Traditionally, risk assessment instruments have relied on an individual’s total prior convictions for any offense and any re-arrest after release from prison. The current research developed a more nuanced measure of prior convictions …

Sexual Sadism Disorder: An Introduction For Mental Health Professionals, Jerrod Brown Sep 2024

Sexual Sadism Disorder: An Introduction For Mental Health Professionals, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

Sexual sadism disorder is characterized by the experience of sexual pleasure through causing, witnessing, or fantasizing about a non-consenting individual’s physical or emotional pain. A commonly misunderstood disorder, its prevalence varies widely depending on the study. There is a lack of inter-clinician reliability concerning diagnosis. Recent efforts have been made to reconceptualize sadism as a dimensional rather than dichotomous construct, resulting in the development of several validated instruments to assist professionals in valid and reliable diagnosis of sexual sadism disorder. The aim of this article is to provide mental health professionals with foundational knowledge on sadism and to provide recommendations …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd): A Call On Educators To Become Informed, Jerrod Brown, Diane Harr, Don Helmstetter

Forensic Scholars Today

Resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is characterized by a range of cognitive, social, and adaptive impairments. Although the effects of FASD vary in range and severity, students with FASD often offer unique challenges and dilemmas to teachers and parents alike. These difficulties may include unusual learning and behavior patterns, requiring specialized assessment and individualized educational planning with a collaborative focus. Educators could benefit from advanced training in early intervention strategies for accommodating instruction to support students with FASD. Despite the fact that students with FASD usually do not outgrow the disorder, early diagnosis along with …

Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd) And Competency To Stand Trial (Cst): A Need For Greater Understanding And Further Research, Jerrod Brown

Forensic Scholars Today

The rate of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnoses increases somewhere between 10% and 17% each year (Baio, 2014), making this disorder the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2015; Van Naarden Braun et al., 2015). In fact, one out of 68 U.S. citizens has an ASD diagnosis (CDC, 2015). This disorder consists of social and communication deficits, cognitive rigidity, and behavioral sequelae, all of which can vary in presence and severity across individuals with the disorder. These symptoms increase the likelihood that an individual will become entangled in the criminal justice system …
