Cultural Sustainability, Uniqueness And The Power Of Productive Living Heritage In Cirebon, Indonesia, Eko Nursanty, Indah Susilowati
Cultural Sustainability, Uniqueness And The Power Of Productive Living Heritage In Cirebon, Indonesia, Eko Nursanty, Indah Susilowati
Journal of Urban Culture Research
Sustainability is intricately linked to culture, people and place. When exploring heritage cities, visitors encounter a range of possibilities, from preserving historical sites to embracing living heritage and transitioning into modern heritage cities. The value of a historic city extends beyond its history and authenticity; it relies on its ability to fulfill specific functions and cater to visitors' desires. This study focuses on the authenticity of Cirebon, Indonesia, particularly its old historic center comprising four palaces and the Trusmi cultural village. Cirebon, strategically located in West Java, serves as a vital link between Jakarta and Surabaya. In 2022, its population …

Illustrating The Fantastic: Cross-Writing Illustrations In British Children’S Literature Of The Golden Age, Stephanie Montalti
Illustrating The Fantastic: Cross-Writing Illustrations In British Children’S Literature Of The Golden Age, Stephanie Montalti
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation argues that British children’s literature of the Golden Age addresses children and adults through their illustrations. It considers why the nineteenth century experienced a proliferation in fantasy and illustration, as well as why Golden Age children’s texts appeal to mixed-age audiences. Through an application of the term “cross-writing,” I argue that the Golden Age of children’s literature did not think of audiences in a binary manner, as some children’s literature scholars tend to assert. Instead, they used the dual mode of textual and visual narration to complicate the boundaries between childhood and adulthood. I also offer an original …

A Business Model For Communication Design Enterprises, Con Kennedy
A Business Model For Communication Design Enterprises, Con Kennedy
Articles
Several international reports and studies indicate that the Communication Design sector has a skill deficit in entrepreneurship and business management, and a greater understanding of these topics is needed. Some authors advocate applying existing business models for design enterprises. However, the skill deficit prevails. It is worth noting that these reports discuss the entrepreneurship deficit in general terms without an explanation of the causes of this deficit or how to remedy the issue. Therefore, this paper explores the development of a Business Model specific for Design Entrepreneurs for deployment in Communication Design enterprises.A theoretical framework for a specific business model …

Unveiling Gender Bias: An Eye-Tracking Analysis Of Scene Perception, Naga Srija Gopisetty
Unveiling Gender Bias: An Eye-Tracking Analysis Of Scene Perception, Naga Srija Gopisetty
Master's Projects
Gender bias deeply affects how we perceive and interact with the world around us. This study examined how gender bias affects scene perception by using eye-tracking technology. The relation between gender bias and pupil dilation is examined utilizing art as a stimuli and also studied the underlying cognitive processes. This experiment combines image presentations along with input from participants, drawing on previous research in gender bias, cognitive psychology, and eye-tracking methodologies. The experiment design showcases a series of images to participants, subtly replacing one image during the trial, and then asks participants whether the
replacement took place. This study uses …

Body Dissatisfaction In College Students: Which Sociocultural Pressure Best Predicts Drive For Thinness?, Sawyer V. Ellis, Elaine M. Kozmiuk, Mary E. Pritchard, Heather Schoenherr
Modern Psychological Studies
Previous literature has suggested that family pressure is the main predictor of drive for thinness (Palladino Green & Pritchard, 2003). Given the growth of social media where thin beauty is glamorized, we wanted to test if this remains true while including multiple factors that may have been disregarded in body-centric studies. Consequently, we asked which sociocultural pressure—family, peers, or media—relates the strongest with body shame, body surveillance, and drive for thinness. A sample of 1,049 undergraduate psychology students, ages 18-29, were surveyed to better understand body dissatisfaction in college students. We predicted that each sociocultural pressure would correlate with body …

In Shame I Will Find Paradise, Taehee Whang
Theses and Dissertations
As a Korean American non-binary digital artist and designer, my recent explorations have focused on using voice as a medium to articulate nuanced feelings of displacement and the intricate relationships between language, identity, and expression. This journey expands beyond my personal experiences with gender dysphoria, delving into the lives of non-binary and transgender individuals undergoing gender-affirming voice therapy. Through my thesis research, I have developed interactive multimedia installations inspired by dialogues with individuals such as Umico Niwa, who traveled to Korea for voice feminization surgery, and Jeong Yoon Lee from Hyperlink Press, a four-year participant in Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). …
Sense Make Before Book, Bradley Sinanan
Sense Make Before Book, Bradley Sinanan
Theses and Dissertations
“Sense Make Before Book” is an Indo-Caribbean turn of phrase which refers to common sense being more important than book smarts. My sister sent me a post the other day on Instagram of an Trinidadian woman using this phrase, saying it was one of Indo-Caribbean origin. I was interested and asked my mom about it. My mom says that when she was younger my grandpa said it often around their house in Princes Town, Trinidad and Tobago. This adage feels charged thinking about the history of indenture and its effects on the Indo-Caribbean diaspora.

The coastline is a constant dialogue among the land, the ocean, the wind, organisms, physics, the past, randomness, and chance…When they think about boundaries, they recall the coastline.

Automated Vehicle Impacts On Underserved Populations, Kate Kyung Hyun, Stephen Mattingly, Katie Kam
Publications
This research report describes the scenario framework created to determine the potential role automated vehicles (AVs) have in benefiting and adversely impacting the following underserved populations: people with disabilities and impairments (visually, hearing, physically, intellectually) and with autism spectrum disorder, younger and older populations, immigrants, low income, indigenous, rural, female and LGBTQ+, vulnerable road users (cyclists, pedestrians, low speed riders and drivers), and minority races. After presenting a literature review, three chapters explain the 3 modules of the framework: (1) scenario construction, (2) scenario factors, and (3) GIS methodology for evaluating community level AV impacts. Module 1 describes the use …

Examining Peer Review Network Dynamics In Higher Education Visual Communication Courses Using Ergm, Ly Dinh, Alon Friedman, Kevin Hawley
School of Information Faculty Publications
Peer review plays a pivotal role in shaping collaborative learning environments and evaluating student engagement, but there is a lack of research on the relational dynamics that underlie the interactions between students during the peer review process, which is critical for understanding the effectiveness of peer review for students’ learning outcomes. Using explanatory sequential study design, this study’s objectives are to explore the dynamics of peer review as a feedback mechanism in higher education within a social network context, focusing on student interactions during the feedback process. Specifically, we applied dyadic-independent Exponential Random Graph Modeling (ERGM), along with mixed-methods …
Visual Documentary Of Intimacy: Obama Presidency Through Pete Souza's Images, Yung Soo Kim
Visual Documentary Of Intimacy: Obama Presidency Through Pete Souza's Images, Yung Soo Kim
Iowa Journal of Communication
This study aims to provide a more in-depth analysis by exploring how images of President Obama successfully led the public to perceive him favorably. This qualitative visual analysis shows that the success of Mr. Souza’s coverage of President Obama stems from his documentary images of intimate moments of the president. Those intimate documentations might help some viewers embrace President Obama as trustworthy, at least for those who came to know him more via these images.
Teachers Do It All: A Cluster-Based Analysis Of Abbott Elementary, Peter Heryla
Teachers Do It All: A Cluster-Based Analysis Of Abbott Elementary, Peter Heryla
Iowa Journal of Communication
This study employs rhetorical criticism to analyze the television sitcom Abbott Elementary (2021). Through close examination of the episodes “Pilot,” “Development Day,” and “Egg Drop,” this analysis aims to uncover key ideas about the multifaceted roles and responsibilities educators are required to assume outside of their main job as “teacher.” Utilizing cluster criticism, the study shows that being a teacher is about more than educating, and that teachers are motivated by common themes when they act outside of their role. The study also focuses on the mediated representation of teachers and the harmful demographic tropes that have historically characterized them, …
Enhancing Communication Efficiency In An Emergency Department By Employing A Visual Communication System For Lab Results Tracking: A Quality Improvement Project, Julie Burr
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
Background: A Critical Access Hospital in New England faces communication challenges in its Emergency Department, impacting patient flow and safety. The current paper charting system leads to delays and inefficiencies.
Local Problem: The communication gap between ordering laboratory tests and providers reviewing results at the patient’s bedside averages 130 minutes, contributing to delays and potential patient safety issues.
Methods: Using the Plan-Do-Study-Act model, a visual communication system was implemented. Laminated labels indicating pending lab, CT, and radiology reports were affixed to patient folders. Data was collected pre- and post-intervention to measure time from lab order to provider review.
Interventions: …
Bridging The Gap: Technological Mediation And The Development Of Humanistic Skills In Medical Simulation: Lessons From Covid-19 And The Impact Of Immersive Media And Minimal Viable Simulation (Mvs), Nicholas Peres
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This thesis provides a chronological account of the integration of innovation and technology within medical simulation and training from 2014 to 2023 at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust (TSDFT). Responding to the backdrop of a constantly changing technological and clinical (epidemiological) landscape, it seeks to develop a methodology for assessing the role of technology in improving medical simulation and training. The research critically challenges the current trend towards high-fidelity simulations, driven by manufacturers' technology-centric marketing strategies that frequently impose cost constraints and limit perceived educational outcomes. Motivated by the Francis Report's (2013) findings, this practice-based study explores the …
Theorizing Cultural Appropriation: Complications Of Globalization And Power In Hybrid K-Pop, David C. Oh
Theorizing Cultural Appropriation: Complications Of Globalization And Power In Hybrid K-Pop, David C. Oh
Media Studies - All Scholarship
The purpose of this paper is to theorize cultural appropriation using a critical perspective that centers structural inequity and uneven global power by examining the case of South Korean media. This paper argues that cultural appropriation is a particular form of intercultural borrowing that relies on structural inequities of power, whereby a more powerful culture takes from a less powerful culture in such a way that it causes structural and representational harm to the borrowed culture. To clarify cultural appropriation as a particular form of cultural borrowing, I provide a typology of different forms of cultural borrowing before positing six …

Small Object Detection Techniques In Remote Sensing Images Using Aam And Raspp, Farhan Iqbal
Small Object Detection Techniques In Remote Sensing Images Using Aam And Raspp, Farhan Iqbal
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Remote sensing technology has advanced substantially, with significant research focused on identifying and recognizing small, distant objects within large-scale scenes. Despite these strides, the task remains difficult due to limitations in image resolution, varied object scales, dense object distribution, and diverse orientations. Current object detection methods often struggle to maintain the fine detail essential for small object detection, resulting in the loss of critical information. To address this, we introduce an Advanced Attention Mechanism (AAM) that combines a novel Combined Channel and Spatial Attention (CCSA) approach with Residual Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (RASSP). This integration enhances detection accuracy by preserving …

Grammatical Error Correction In Thai Sentences For Deaf Students, Supachan Traitruengsakul
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Deaf students encounter challenges in written communication due to errors such as insertion, deletion, disorder, misusage, and misspellings. Grammatical error correction (GEC) technology can help mitigate these issues. However, existing GEC models are primarily trained on online resources from second-language hearing learners. In contrast, sentences written by deaf students suffer from a variety of errors not typically found elsewhere. To address this issue, we create the Thai Deaf Corpus (TDC), focusing on identifying and analyzing errors among deaf students in grades 7-12 across four deaf schools. Additionally, we introduce a two-stage system for the Thai-GEC model, automatically detecting and correcting …
