Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a dangerous illness that strikes the central nervous system. The body's immune system attacks myelin (an entity above the nerves) and impairs brain-to-body communication. To date, it is not possible to cure MS. However, symptoms can be managed, and treatments can be provided if the disease is diagnosed early. Hence, supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms and several hyperparameter tuning techniques, including Bayesian optimization, have been utilized in this study to predict MS in patients. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis has been conducted before training the classifiers. The most essential markers were chosen using a technique called …

Discourses That Undermine Union Movements: A Multimodal Analysis Of Union-Busting Videos, Theresa A. Catalano, Julia Schleck Jan 2024

Discourses That Undermine Union Movements: A Multimodal Analysis Of Union-Busting Videos, Theresa A. Catalano, Julia Schleck

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Labor unions in the United States have experienced decades of decline, but recent years have seen a rebirth of union campaigns and successes. Because unions are once again becoming a threat to large companies, it is reasonable to assume that efforts to discourage organizing efforts will increase and become even more robust in the near future. Although traditionally, companies have worked to suspend union organizing through captive audience meetings in which unions were discussed via verbal or written modes, more recent means of reaching workers with anti-union messages incorporate a variety of communication strategies to get the message across. As …

Beyond The 'Grand Line': One Piece’S Radical Reimagining Of Global Politics, Titipong Mahattanasin Jan 2024

Beyond The 'Grand Line': One Piece’S Radical Reimagining Of Global Politics, Titipong Mahattanasin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis explores how the long-running Japanese manga One Piece functions as a radical political archive that reflects, critiques, and reimagines global politics across three historical eras. Drawing from the fields of International Relations and Development Studies, this research analyzes how the manga stages fictional yet deeply resonant struggles over power, freedom, and justice. Through close readings of key narrative arcs—Alabasta, Skypiea, Enies Lobby, Marineford, Dressrosa, and Wano—this study situates One Piece within real-world political contexts including post–Cold War liberal triumphalism, the global War on Terror, and the protest movements of the 2010s. The thesis draws upon theoretical insights from …

Drawing on an integrated theoretical framework, including Hall's encoding/decoding model, Bhabha's theory of cultural translation, and Falk and Dierking's contextual model of learning, the research conceptualizes curators as cultural translators who shape meaning through spatial design, visual symbolism, and platform-sensitive narratives.A comparative case study of MO&Co. Guangzhou-based and VINN PATARARIN Bangkok-based was selected to represent divergent curatorial approaches and cultural positions: MO&Co. leverages Guochao aesthetics, feminist symbolism, and theatrical scenography to appeal to urban Chinese youth on platforms …

Curatorial Practice Project For Art Exhibition "Check In Planet Colonization Plan”, Jiajing Ji Jan 2024

Curatorial Practice Project For Art Exhibition "Check In Planet Colonization Plan”, Jiajing Ji

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

As digital life increasingly shapes how we engage with culture, Check-in Culture has emerged as a powerful lens through which identity, space, and symbolic value are negotiated. Far from mere location tags, Check-ins on platforms like Instagram and Xiaohongshu are performative acts—blending personal branding, viral humor, and algorithmic visibility. This study examines how ordinary places, such as the now-iconic “Chengdu Disney,” are transformed into cultural landmarks through participatory remixing and meme-driven attention. To explore these dynamics, the “CHECK IN Planet Colonization Plan” online exhibition serves as both a case study and a curatorial experiment, merging artistic interpretation, social media interaction, and …

Multitudes, Madison Otter Jan 2024

Multitudes, Madison Otter

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Identity is a fluid and layered experience enriched by contradictions, the power of interpersonal relationships, and continuous growth. Recognizing oneself as a blend of opposing traits—strong and tender, contemplative and restless—reveals that humanity is anything but black and white. With each passing day, we evolve, bringing new perspectives and insights with us. As Walt Whitman wrote, "[we] contain multitudes.''

Although no single artistic medium can fully capture this for me, using multiple modes of expression allows me to explore and approximate it. This realization was the origin of my thesis.

The process of creation itself, whether quick or deliberate, is …

Gerontovis: Data Visualization At The Confluence Of Aging, Zack While, R. Jordan Crouser, Ali Sarvghad

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Despite the explosive growth of the aging population worldwide, older adults have been largely overlooked by visualization research. This paper is a critical reflection on the underrepresentation of older adults in visualization research. We discuss why investigating visualization at the intersection of aging matters, why older adults may have been omitted from sample populations in visualization research, how aging may affect visualization use, and how this differs from traditional accessibility research. To encourage further discussion and novel scholarship in this area, we introduce GerontoVis, a term which encapsulates research and practice of data visualization design that primarily focuses on older …

Depicting The Donald: How Framing Of Donald Trump In Media Changed Throughout The Course Of His 2015-2016 United States Presidential Campaign, Jakob O. Janoski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined how framing of Donald Trump in online news images may have changed throughout the course of his 2015-2016 United States presidential campaign. Previous research suggests that Republican presidential candidates may get more coverage but not necessarily be framed as more favorable (Moriarty and Popovich, 1988). The content analysis comprised of 18 constructed weeks in which images from various outlets were analyzed in nine categories (e.g., “facial expression” and “posture”) and coded as either “more favorable,” “N/A” or “less favorable.” It was found that image favorability of Trump dipped from the Pre-Primary period to the Primary period then …
