Social Sustainability In Event Management: A Critical Commentary, Judith Mair, Emma Wood, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2024

Social Sustainability In Event Management: A Critical Commentary, Judith Mair, Emma Wood, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

This critical commentary focuses on the development of research in Event Management on social sustainability in the context of events. Findings suggest that while there has been a plethora of articles published in the journal that touch on elements of what we understand to relate to social sustainability (e.g., resident impacts; sense of community, place, belonging, etc.) there are very few that have explicitly situated their work in the sustainability field. This means that it is somewhat difficult to pull together the various threads of disparate studies to comment on the evolution of research on events and social sustainability as …

Community Resurrection: Qualitative Research Exploring Methods In Revitalizing Historic Districts Without Gentrification, Gayle Yvonne Green

West Chester University Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Final Projects

This qualitative study examines redevelopment and historic preservation in the Lincoln Street Historic District of Gary, Indiana. Established in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation, Gary grew as a major industrial center before experiencing decades of disinvestment, abandonment, and renewed interest from commercial investors. Despite the district’s architectural and cultural significance, its historic structures and surrounding neighborhoods continue to face deterioration and redevelopment pressures.

Using a case study approach, this research explores the perspectives of seven residents and two business owners with longstanding ties to the district. Through interviews, participants identified resources needed to revitalize blighted and abandoned properties, …

Local Content And Placemaking In Small And Medium-Sized Towns (Smsts) : A Tale Of Two Cities In South Korea, Dongsuk Huh

Journal of Urban Culture Research

This study aims to explore the process of sustainable placemaking in small and medium-sized towns utilizing local cultural resources and examine the characteristics of their local content. A qualitative analysis is conducted on two cases, namely, Gongju and Buyeo in South Korea, which are experiencing depopulation and regional shrinkage. These two cases emphasise the local content and placeness that can be subjectively experienced in small towns and villages instead of focusing on the creation of large-scale landmarks and iconic artefacts. By highlighting connectivity and unified storytelling amongst various places in their neighborhoods, these cases were able to stimulate the cultural …

111 Crawling Before We Walk: Transdisciplinary Insights Into Improving The Liveability And Walkability Of Campus Settings, Lorraine D'Arcy, Eoin Mcgillicuddy, Caren Gallagher, Leo Mcconnell

Conference Papers

Since the 1960s, development patterns influenced by upstream land use planning policies have favoured a more suburban car-based approach for street and neighbourhood design (McGrath, 1992), subsequently influencing transport system needs and scheme design. In turn, transport policy and design influence population physical activity levels and emissions. As we moved to this more suburban design, our university campuses followed suit and now we have challenges that deter physical activity to and through our university campuses. Furthermore, air quality issues encouraged by a suburban design can enhance an individual's discomfort in participating in physical activity and may influence their decision to …

International graduate students in the United States begin their academic journey with the goal of professional growth, but they frequently struggle to secure internships due to bureaucratic barriers and competitive marketplaces. This study explores Eastern Illinois University's international graduate students' experiences through the perspective of sensemaking theory, with the goal of understanding how they make sense of the internship process. In-depth qualitative interviews with ten students revealed that students make sense of their internships in two ways: on one end, the struggles, and on the on the other end, how they are strengthening. Through sensemaking, students analyze and adapt to …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Long Creek Elementary School is a small, rural school with approximately 292 students in Sallis, Mississippi. Long Creek Elementary School has historically struggled with stronger parent involvement in their children’s school life. To address this concern, the administration, faculty, and staff at Long Creek Elementary School targeted barriers to parental involvement/engagement to increase community engagement/involvement in school life and connect the missing pieces between school and community. This has led to discussions of the creation of a parent center to provide parents with daily support and needed resources to contribute to their child/children’s academic success.

The purpose of this study …

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus also known as MRSA is an infection of a staph bacteria. High school athletes are at risk of contracting MRSA through skin to skin contact and/or MRSA contaminated equipment. This case study uses the CDC's six-step framework for program evaluation to measure the effectiveness of the online training modules designed to increase the knowledge of staff and stakeholders about MRSA and infectious disease outbreaks. The findings from this evaluation will advise the potential change(s) implemented in training modules, ultimately to enhance competency for decision makers and prevent MRSA and infectious disease outbreak amongst high school athletic programs.

Bridging Theory & Functionality: Our Urban Spaces, Tate Hurley Jan 2024

Bridging Theory & Functionality: Our Urban Spaces, Tate Hurley

Undergraduate Honors Theses

On a global scale, our communities are complex in their identities, culture, and traditions. Yet, these characteristics often fail to translate into the spaces that define public environments, such as parks, natural reserves, or walking spaces in urban life. This problem is systematically rooted in landscape architecture and design's flawed educational and professional setup. The intersectionality of our society should not be washed over by capitalism, gentrification, or the new “green wave” of architecture and construction. Large corporations who fund projects are more valued in design than the people who inhabit and interact with these “third places.” This inherently limits …

Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling And Potential Environmental Impacts, Sam Gold, Yuxin Wang, Tasneem Tawalbeh Jan 2024

Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling And Potential Environmental Impacts, Sam Gold, Yuxin Wang, Tasneem Tawalbeh

Research Days Posters 2024

Growth of Lithium-Ion Battery (LIBs) in consumer electronics and the electric vehicle fleet has highlighted the need to address recycling issues. Recycling of spent LIBs is in its infancy and less than 5% of LIBs are recycled globally. LIBs are manufactured with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS are persistent, mobile, and toxic environmental contaminants. Little is known about the environmental risks of LIBs recycling. This research presents an overview of fluorinated compounds used in LIBs. Recognizing the need for LIBs recycling, this project also presents LIBs disposal management methods and their environmental impacts from landfilling and recycling techniques including …

The Federal Government’S Role As The Warden Of Immigrants, Pedro Gerson Jan 2024

The Federal Government’S Role As The Warden Of Immigrants, Pedro Gerson

Nebraska Law Review

This Essay examines the evolving landscape of immigration enforcement within the broader context of federal confinement in the United States. The current “crisis” at the southern border, characterized by historic levels of migrant influx and shifting political tides toward restrictionism, underscores the federal government’s increasing emphasis on confinement as a tool of migration control. Furthermore, this Essay argues the need to conceptualize federal confinement as a unified system encompassing both immigration detention and incarceration, which reveals the extent to which immigration has become a dominant factor in federal custody. Drawing on data and analysis, it demonstrates that immigration-related offenses now …

Building And Fostering Honors Communities: Lessons From Social Distancing, Anne Dotter, Kathleen King Jan 2024

Building And Fostering Honors Communities: Lessons From Social Distancing, Anne Dotter, Kathleen King

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters

While scholars of online education have been developing ways to foster a sense of belonging in online spaces for years, many of us in honors were thrown into the deep end for the first time in March 2020. As a result, we are now able to see the potential of online practices in a way we could not previously. This chapter tells the story of how we came to see the value of virtual community made possible by digital technology as an invaluable complement to the in-person work of a twenty-first-century honors program. Before the Work from Home (WFH) era, …

We Need To Understand It Before We Can Teach It: A Cooperative Inquiry Into Mindfulness-Based Social-Emotional Learning With International School Teachers, Kailyn Fullerton

Doctor of Education

This dissertation describes the experience of a group of international school teachers engaging in a cooperative inquiry exploring the influence of mindfulness-based social-emotional learning (MBSEL) practices on their personal and professional lives. The current reality for educators is one of systemic stress and burnout, with teachers working under increasing pressure, and communities still reeling from the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. In international school settings, many expatriate educators are living far away from their country of birth and searching for belonging and community. MBSEL practices have been demonstrated to support wellbeing, however adult learning of these skills is often …

The Korean Hanok As A Model For Sustainable Architecture In South Korea, Jordan Oh Jan 2024

The Korean Hanok As A Model For Sustainable Architecture In South Korea, Jordan Oh

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis analyzes the traditional Korean hanok within the Western framework for sustainability across environmental, social, and economic dimensions. It then cross-references the findings of this analysis with existing theory on the cultural role of architecture to elucidate how the traditional Korean hanok can serve as a model for sustainable architecture in South Korea. Through a comprehensive analysis this thesis highlights the importance of architectural vernacular to define a sustainable building, and critiques contemporary Western ideas of sustainable architecture. Furthermore, this thesis synthesizes two current approaches to sustainable development in South Korea, the u-eco-city and the Green Standard for Energy …

Partnership In Rural Development Between Cambodia And South Korea: A Case Study Of Prey Romeat Village In Cambodia, Chan Jun Park

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cambodia’s macroeconomic growth since the 1990s has not been paralleled by proportional improvements in rural livelihoods, where the majority of the population continues to experience poverty and development stagnation. Compounding this challenge is the nation’s historical reliance on Official Development Assistance (ODA), which has fostered structural aid dependency and weakened local initiative. This thesis investigates the Saemaul Undong Model Village Project (SMU project), a rural development project implemented in partnership between Cambodia and South Korea through the Korea Saemaul Undong Center (KSUC), as a potential alternative to conventional donor-driven aid models. The research examines the case of Prey Romeat village …

Knowledge Commons Past, Present, And Future, Michael J. Madison Jan 2024

Knowledge Commons Past, Present, And Future, Michael J. Madison

Lewis & Clark Law Review

The project now known as Governing Knowledge Commons, or GKC, was launched more than 15 years ago on the intuition that skepticism of intellectual property law and information exclusivity was grounded in anecdote and ideology rather than in empiricism. Structured, systematic, empirical research on mechanisms of knowledge sharing was needed. GKC aimed to help scholars produce it. Over multiple books, case studies, and other work, the scope of GKC has expanded considerably, from innovation to governance; from invention and creativity to data, privacy, and markets; and from social dilemmas focused on things to governance strategies directed to communities and collectives. …

Can Medical-Legal Partnerships Do More To Advance Reproductive Justice After Dobbs?, Medha D. Makhlouf, Natasha Rappazzo

Faculty Scholarly Works

The medical-legal partnership (MLP) and reproductive justice (RJ) movements both seek to solve complex problems, serve diverse populations with intersectional challenges, and resolve community conditions that impact people’s ability to reach their highest health potential. Yet MLPs have been overlooked as a strategy to advance reproductive health and justice. MLP has distinct advantages for advancing RJ, and many MLPs might already be doing RJ work without referring to it by name. By intentionally adopting an RJ strategy and explicitly addressing the unmet social and legal needs that limit people’s ability to plan their reproductive futures, MLPs can better serve their …

Engagement Through Boundary Spanning: Insights From Us Entrepreneurship Educators, Ethné Swartz, Dianne H.B. Welsh, Norris Krueger, Steven Tello

Department of Management Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

This paper examines how the institutional role of entrepreneurship educators influences how they span boundaries and engage students and communities. We examine boundary-spanning behaviours based on four types of orientations among individuals involved in higher education technicalpractical, socio-emotional, community and organizational. We used survey data to identify how entrepreneurship educators at higher education institutions engaged stakeholders before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings suggest that the institutional role appears to correlate with boundary-spanning orientation. Faculty reported involvement in boundary-spanning and engagement activities, albeit to significantly lower degrees than other participants involved in entrepreneurship education and administration. This paper summarizes …

A Few Lessons From Venezuela: Introducing A New Path Of Appropriate Farming And Appropriate Renewable Energy, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In development economics literatures, there is a known term for developing countries which tend to mismanage natural resources, that term is called natural resources curse. And two examples which have been discussed quite often is Venezuela and Norway. Here we also discuss other countries as well, including Argentina and a few lessons for Indonesia in choosing the next course of development path, especially with appropriate farming and appropriate renewable energy.
