A Thematic Analysis Of The Experiences Of Black Female Coaches’ Evolution In Women’S College Basketball, Jessica E. Jones
A Thematic Analysis Of The Experiences Of Black Female Coaches’ Evolution In Women’S College Basketball, Jessica E. Jones
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
According to the NCAA Demographics database, among the Division I, Division II, and Division III teams' women's basketball rosters for the 2020-2021 season, Black women only held 12% of head coaching positions, while White women held 45% of head coaching positions. The statistics should raise concern as Black and other female athletes of color make up 50% of NCAA's basketball rosters across all three divisions but they do not transition into coaching or leadership positions.
The current study explored the lived experiences of Black female coaches in NCAA women's basketball, including their career advancement, experiences as coaches, and their perception …

Heart Rate Reserve Is Associated With Quality Of Life, Willing Demott, John Manning, Jennifer M. Yentes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
A resilient person is less susceptible to injury and loss of function following a perturbation because they are capable of recovering quickly from physical and cognitive difficulties. One way to estimate resilience is through the measurement of reserve, which is defined as the difference between resting or baseline capacity and maximal capacity. An individual’s reserve capacity may depend on several factors such as quality of life. PURPOSE: Determine the relationship between heart rate reserve and components of quality of life. METHODS: Eleven middle-aged (59.3 ± 4.3 yrs) and seven older adults (70.0 ± 3.7 yrs) completed a Bruce protocol exercise …

The Acute Effects Of Carrying A Heavy Grocery Bag On Handgrip Rapid Strength In Young And Older Women, Lilly M. Frans, Kayla P. Sisneros, Evan Johnson, Tyler R. Cole, Ty B. Palmer
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Declines in handgrip rapid strength characteristics, which include rate of force development (RFD), are commonly reported as a consequence of aging. These declines have been shown to have a detrimental effect on the functional performance abilities of older adults. Such an effect may be amplified by a further decrease in handgrip RFD as a result of fatigue. Evidence suggests that carrying a heavy grocery bag can elicit fatigue-induced changes in muscle activity and cardiovascular parameters. It is unclear if carrying a heavy grocery bag will elicit fatigue-induced changes in handgrip RFD. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Law enforcement officers (LEOs) have a high-stress occupation, which is prone to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Data suggest a 1.7-fold higher CVD prevalence versus the general public, in addition to 40.5% of LEOs being classified as obese. Emerging evidence suggests that lipid-related atherosclerotic risk may be better captured by including advanced blood lipid panels (i.e., cholesterol particle type and size). However, there needs to be more research regarding the relationship between body composition, body fat distribution, and advanced blood lipid panels concerning CVD risk in LEOs. PURPOSE: To determine if body composition and fat distribution measures correlate with predictive advanced …

Driving Entrainment Of Locomotor And Respiratory Systems To Determine Metabolic Efficiency, Michael T. Young, Jennifer M. Yentes, Kuanting Chen
Driving Entrainment Of Locomotor And Respiratory Systems To Determine Metabolic Efficiency, Michael T. Young, Jennifer M. Yentes, Kuanting Chen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Many biological rhythms, including breathing and locomotor rhythms, are interconnected through a phenomenon known as coupling. Locomotor respiratory coupling (LRC) is quantified using a ratio of stride cycles to breaths. For example, an entrained LRC ratio of two strides to one breathing cycle, is a typical ratio humans use while walking. While various ratios have been recorded, previous research has suggested that not deviating from a particular ratio is associated with low energy expenditure. However, recent research challenges the assumption that stronger LRC correlates with lower energy expenditure, but rather, LRC variability is associated with lower energy expenditure. In addition, …

Effects Of Endurance Training On Skeletal Muscle Mass And Inflammation In A Rat Model Of Heart Failure, Aaron Garcia, Dillon Harris, Quinten Pigg, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chronic disease states including heart failure (HF) often lead to reduced physical activity, resulting in disuse and low-level systemic inflammation, which contribute to the decline in muscle mass and function. An important goal of therapy in HF patients is to counteract or prevent the development of skeletal muscle alterations in order to restore a normal functional capacity. Exercise is an established means of improving exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with HF. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of an endurance program on skeletal muscle mass and inflammation in a rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)-induced …

The Effect Of Capsaicin On Peak Force And Rate Of Force Developement In Resistance-Trained Men - A Pilot Study, Jalyn Dunlap, Nigel Jiwan, Casey Appell, Andrew Schindel, Jon Berrios, Savannah Adjetey, Mia Uriegas, Hui-Ying Luk
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Capsaicin (CAP) is a robust stimulator of transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), which promotes calcium (Ca2+) efflux from the sarcoplasmic reticulum and can potentiate cross-bridge formation that has the potential to affect peak force and rate of force development (RFD). However, its effect on overall lower body strength is limited. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of acute CAP consumption on peak force and RFD in resistance-trained men. METHODS: Resistance-trained men (n=5; age: 22±2years, mass: 80.9±11.9kg; height: 177.3±6.6cm) were supplemented either with 2.4mg of CAP or placebo (PL; microcrystalline cellulose). Prior to (PRE) and 45 minutes …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Dehydration may alter the ratio between the extracellular water (ECW) and intracellular water (ICW). Nevertheless, it is unknown whether the ratio between ECW and ICW following resistance exercise (RE) is affected by dehydration. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of dehydration on fluids shift after heavy RE. METHODS: 13 resistance-trained men (age: 21±2years; height: 176.4±6.0cm; weight: 79.5±11.5kg) completed a heavy RE consisting of bilateral leg press and knee extension exercises (5 x 10 at 80% of 1 repetition maximum with 2-mins rest between sets & exercises) either under a hydrated (HS; urine specific gravity [USG] < 1.020) or a dehydrated state (DS; USG ≥ 1.020; 24-hour fluid restriction). The two conditions were separated by two weeks. The ratio of ICW/ECW and total body water (TBW) were measured before (PRE), 1 hour (1H), and 3H after RE using bioelectrical impedance spectroscope (BIS). Additionally, vastus lateralis muscle samples were collected at PRE, 1H, and 3H via muscle biopsy. Muscle samples were weighed (Wt) before (Wet) and after (Dry) heating at 80°C for 55 minutes. For BIS parameters, values were normalized to each participant's HS PRE value. For muscle Wt, percent changes from Dry to Wet were calculated. Repeated measures ANOVAs were used to identify the differences. RESULTS: A significant …

Systemic Inflammation Persists In Rats With Heart Failure After A Short-Term Endurance Training Protocol, Quinten Pigg, Dillon Harris, Aaron Garcia, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Exercise has been shown to produce an anti-inflammatory response and an increased exercise tolerance in heart failure (HF) patients. In rats, monocrotaline (MCT) leads to pulmonary arterial hypertension-induced HF (PAH-HF), resulting in exercise intolerance and chronic inflammation. However, little is known about the effects of endurance training in rats with PAH-HF induced by monocrotaline. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of an endurance training protocol on systemic inflammatory markers and exercise tolerance in rats with HF. METHODS: 30 male Wistar rats (~250g) were randomly divided into 4 groups: control untrained (CU); control trained (CT), PAH-HF untrained (HFU), and PAH-HF trained (HFT). …

Micronized Biocompatible Ceramic Promotes Muscle Derived Il-6 Release In Disuse, Jacob Kendra, Shadi Golpasandi, Alexandra Naman, Mariam Othman, Joo Kim, Rachel Rauth, Khaled Moustafa, John Lawler, Aaron Morton
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Skeletal muscle is remarkably plastic and undergoes significant muscle wasting in response to mechanical unloading. Chronic bedrest and microgravity conditions promote disuse-induced muscle atrophy and dysfunctional myogenesis. While these pathological effects have been well documented, there are currently no effective therapies to remedy this muscle loss. Time-release ion matrices (TRIM) are amorphous non-crystalline biomaterials that promote regenerative gene transcription when injected in soft tissue. However, the detailed pathways involved in TRIM activated regeneration of skeletal muscle are unexplored. Degenerative and regenerative inflammation are key processes in regeneration. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate muscle inflammation in response …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Heart failure (HF) leads to debilitating skeletal muscle dysfunction and atrophy, with exercise tolerance (ET) remaining a crucial indicator of clinical, practical, and mortality-based outcomes. To simulate these comorbidities, monocrotaline (MCT) is a pharmacological agent typically used to aid in replicating experimental models of right ventricle HF. PURPOSE: To investigate the viability of moderate-intensity aerobic training to preserve skeletal muscle function and ameliorate muscle atrophy in MCT-induced HF. METHODS: Thirty 8-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into sedentary (SED) or trained groups (EX; 30min/day treadmill running sessions, 5 days/wk, for 4 weeks) at 60% intensity determined by a maximal …

Quantification Of Mitochondrial Morphology In Whole Muscle, Shadi Golpasandi, Jacob Kendra, Alexandra Naman, Aaron Morton
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mitochondrial dysfunction is well described in many chronic illnesses including musculoskeletal, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular diseases. In this regard, mitochondrial network morphology has been implicated as a biomarker of disease correlating increased mitochondrial fragmentation to impaired cellular function. While advancements in imaging techniques have furthered our understanding of mitochondrial dynamics in live cells, easily accessible approaches for accurate quantification of in situ, whole muscle mitochondria are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to validate a proof-of-concept method capable of quantifying 3D mitochondrial network morphology in whole mount skeletal muscle and then applying it to mitochondrial morphology analysis in multiple …

Release Of Microrna15a/16 From Skeletal Muscle During Exercise Regulates Proteostasis In Muscle And Cancer, Patrick Ryan, Selina Uranga, James D. Fluckey
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Proteostasis, the intricate process of maintaining the proteome, is a critical matter for cellular health. The regulation of the multiple intersecting metabolic pathways comprising the proteostatic network is correspondingly complex and incompletely understood; however, a new and intriguing candidate in understanding this process has emerged in the form of microRNA (miRNA), small RNA species which are capable of regulating hundreds of genes at once by binding to and degrading mRNA transcripts. We have previously shown that muscle contraction results in the release of two miRNA species (miR15a/16) from skeletal muscles, and that a perfusate rich in these miRNAs slows growth …

Assessing Dual Task Gait Asymmetries In Older Adults Using Wireless Instrumented Shoe Insoles, Madison M. Treece, Jennifer M. Yentes, Sofie De Wandel, Minchae C. Kang, Marielle P.K.J. Engelen, Nicolaas E. Deutz, Andrew D. Nordin
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Gait asymmetries have been suggested to be indicators of pathology. Walking while simultaneously completing a secondary cognitive task, or dual task, has been found to alter gait parameters such as stride time and stride length in aging populations. Gait asymmetries are commonly exacerbated in older adults under dual task conditions as attention is diverted away from walking. Although clinically relevant, assessing gait biomechanics outside of traditional laboratory settings can be challenging, but is possible using lightweight wireless sensors. PURPOSE: Our aim was to assess the influence of a cognitive load on gait asymmetries in older adults using wireless instrumented …

Effects Of Continuous Aerobic Exercise On Skeletal Muscle Atrophy Induced By Heart Failure, Carolina Tonon, Bertha F. Polegato, Quinten Pigg, Dillon Harris, Aaron Garcia, Daniela S. Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Heart failure is a common and severe disease that worsens morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. One of the clinical manifestations of heart failure is peripheral muscular atrophy, whose presence impacts the prognosis of heart failure patients. Inflammation is one of the main mechanisms related to muscle atrophy. We hypothesized that inflammation, through excessive activation of the Nlrp3 inflammasome, would be tightly associated with skeletal muscle atrophy induced by heart failure. Additionally, aerobic exercise, well known for its anti-inflammatory action, would counteract this condition in a rat model of heart failure. PURPOSE: We aimed to evaluate the effects of continuous …

Multiple bouts of exertional-heat exposure can assist in reducing the magnitude of perceived stress during future heat exposures. Recently, eccentric muscle-damaging exercise has also been proposed as a beneficial preconditioning modality to assist with exercise in the heat due to the potential effects on improving physiological and thermoregulatory responses during exercise. PURPOSE: This study investigated the effect of muscle-damaging exercise in the heat, compared to a thermoneutral condition, on minimizing perceptual stress during future exertional-heat exposure. METHODS: Ten physically active males (mean ± SD; age, 23 ± 3 years; body mass, 78.7 ± 11.5 kg; height, 176.9 ± …

Muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) has been identified as a major predictor of the force production capabilities in athletes, while countermovement jumps (CMJ) can be used to assess power production translated into jump height. However, there is a lack of literature looking at the relationship between CSA and CMJ performance in athletes at different timepoints throughout a competitive season. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between change in lower limb muscle CSA and CMJ performance in semi-professional soccer players over the course of a season. METHODS: Twenty-three male players (mean ± standard deviation; age: 21.3 ± 2 years; height: 178.4 ± 6.7 …

Body volume (BV) indicates the total 3-dimensional (3D) space an individual occupies. BV is either used alongside body mass in density-based two-compartment models or in conjunction with other body components in multi-compartment models to estimate body composition (BC). BV estimates are typically produced by costly laboratory methods, such as hydrostatic weighing or air-displacement plethysmography (ADP). However, more accessible options are emerging. Smartphone-based 3D scanning uses the phone’s built-in camera to provide a BV estimate in a time-efficient and cost-effective manner. However, few investigations have validated this method against an accepted laboratory technique. PURPOSE: To determine the validity of BV from …
