“Quacking For Noggin”: Farm Animal–Assisted Therapy For Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Alex Sargsyan, Lora Beebe, Zenithson Ng, Patricia Roberson, Sandra Thomas
“Quacking For Noggin”: Farm Animal–Assisted Therapy For Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors, Alex Sargsyan, Lora Beebe, Zenithson Ng, Patricia Roberson, Sandra Thomas
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
The aim of this study was to examine the effects of animal-assisted therapies with farm animals (AATF), in this case domesticated ducks, on depression, anxiety, and self-efficacy in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Furthermore, the following hypothesis was tested:
Engaging in AATF with domesticated ducks will be associated with decreased depression, decreased anxiety, and increased self-efficacy.
The study examined the effects of AATF on anxiety, depression, and self-efficacy among nine patients with TBI. A time series quasi-experimental design was utilized. Participants completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Survey (HADS) and General Self-Efficacy (GSE) questionnaires at baseline, followed by the …
Exploring Home Health Nurse Decision Making: Development And Implementation Of The Visit Plan, Elliane Irani
Exploring Home Health Nurse Decision Making: Development And Implementation Of The Visit Plan, Elliane Irani
Dissertations
Demand for home health services is increasing due to the growing aging population, increasing rates of chronic conditions, and advances in health care that support the provision of many health-related services in patients' homes. Home health agencies must adapt care delivery procedures to meet the needs of diverse and complex patients in order to keep them in their homes for as long as possible. However, it is unknown how home health nurses decide on visit patterns and implement their visit plans within the dynamic and unpredictable home health setting. This qualitative descriptive study was guided by an adapted nurse decision-making …
Pro-Vaccine And Anti-Vaccine Groups. Social Distance And Self-Assessment Of Scientific Skills, Sandrine Gaymard
Pro-Vaccine And Anti-Vaccine Groups. Social Distance And Self-Assessment Of Scientific Skills, Sandrine Gaymard
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
The social distance scale developed by Bogardus decades ago, which allows us to measure levels of acceptance among members of diverse social, ethnic, or racial groups, has been widely used in different contexts. The objective of this study is to evaluate the social distance accepted by pro-vaccine and anti-vaccine groups. Following the principle of the Bogardus scale, a questionnaire was created regarding different degrees of closeness. Respondents also completed a scientific skills self-assessment. The population consisted of 193 people who declared themselves in favor of vaccination and 41 people who declared themselves against it. Statistical tests show significant differences regarding …
Design Thinking Strategies For Complex Situations: Covid-19 In Western Australia And New South Wales, Terence Love, Paul Cozens, Trudi Cooper
Design Thinking Strategies For Complex Situations: Covid-19 In Western Australia And New South Wales, Terence Love, Paul Cozens, Trudi Cooper
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
This paper outlines an argument for changing the foundation of design thinking practices to include causal feedback loops instead of primarily predicting futures using linear causal relations. The paper suggests for most real-world design situations the traditional linear causal perspective is insufficient and leads to lower value design outcomes. The authors propose instead designers address real-world complex design situations via design methods that include feedback loops, which require different design methods and tools. The discussion in the paper follows the understanding of systems researchers. The authors provide an example of the significant differences in outcomes using a comparative case study …
Cross-Sectional Retrospective Study To Determine The Prevalence Of Periodontal Bone Loss As A Function Of Age In The Predoctoral Clinic Patient Population, Lincoln Nguyen
All ETDs from UAB
Age has a significant effect on the body’s ability fight off disease, recover, and maintain collagen structures, and it has been observed that older adults have a higher prevalence of periodontal diseases. Studies have shown that age is a risk factor for alveolar bone loss. However, there is a lack of research done looking at if this is a linear progression or if there is a specific age that susceptibility increases. The aim of this study is to investigate (1) changes in radiographic bone loss in varying age groups in the University of Alabama patient population and (2) to evaluate …
Mapping Work Histories And Measuring Work Quality: Differences By Race, Gender, And Motherhood, Clifford James Ross
Mapping Work Histories And Measuring Work Quality: Differences By Race, Gender, And Motherhood, Clifford James Ross
All ETDs from UAB
It is well-established that work has a strong association with health and that work is also a key driver of health inequality. However, there is little research that incorporates multiple components of work into one cohesive measure and examines how work patterns unfold over the life course. By incorporating three theoretical frameworks (1) The Sociology of Work and Health, (2) The Life Course, and (3) The Stress Process, and using over 40 years of employment data (collected from 1979-2018) from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (N=3,302), I introduce a comprehensive work measure called “Work Quality”. Then, using work …
The Rise And Fall Of Internal Colonialism As A Theory Of Race In Black Political Movements And Academia, Eric Davis
The Rise And Fall Of Internal Colonialism As A Theory Of Race In Black Political Movements And Academia, Eric Davis
All ETDs from UAB
Throughout black/African history in the United States, various competitive ideas have emerged over time to take on the arduous task of theorizing race. From W.E.B. Du Bois’s famed assertion of the issue of race being one of racial discrimination--- summed up aptly as the“color line”--- to Malcolm X’s gradual recognition of the problem as one of Euro-American imperialism, to others, there has been no shortage of race theories. However, the ascension of contemporary theories of race has belied this diversity, obscuring the roles of other paradigms in shaping a mass consciousness of race, such as internal colonialism. This thesis applies …
Health Seeking Behaviors Of Pregnant And Post-Partum Women Living With Hiv In A Rural Region Of Kenya - A Mixed Method Study, Sandra Korkor Chrapah
Health Seeking Behaviors Of Pregnant And Post-Partum Women Living With Hiv In A Rural Region Of Kenya - A Mixed Method Study, Sandra Korkor Chrapah
All ETDs from UAB
Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services, including antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC), and HIV services are crucial in preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes for pregnant/postpartum women and their infants. However, the utilization of these services remains low for pregnant/postpartum women living in Africa. The recent COVID-19 pandemic with the associated low utilization of MCH services poses a threat to the improvements made over the years. This dissertation proposal aimed to examine the relationship between HIV status and health service utilization (HSU) and outcomes for pregnant/postpartum women living in a rural region in Kenya. I adopted a convergent parallel mixed methods …
Adolescents' Life Stressors And Mental Health Trajectories In Young Adulthood: Findings From The Nlsy97 Cohort, Monir Hossain
Adolescents' Life Stressors And Mental Health Trajectories In Young Adulthood: Findings From The Nlsy97 Cohort, Monir Hossain
All ETDs from UAB
Prior research demonstrates that early life adversity lowers mental health in young adulthood; however, there has been less attention to adversity occurring in adolescence and how this affects mental health over time. Further, little research has considered how the type of adversity (here called Adolescent Life Stressors (ALSs)) may affect mental health over time differently. The life course perspective directs attention to how adversity in adolescence and the type of ALS experienced may be especially consequential to the extent that it disrupts normative adult role attainment—education, employment, marriage, and parenthood—in the transition to adulthood. To address these gaps, I use …
Barriers And Facilitators To Mental Health Care Among Suicide Attempt Survivors, Mercedes Tarasovich
Barriers And Facilitators To Mental Health Care Among Suicide Attempt Survivors, Mercedes Tarasovich
All ETDs from UAB
This mixed methods study examined factors associated with met and unmet mental health care needs among suicide attempt survivors in the U.S. Quantitative survey data from 74 participants was analyzed using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to determine configurations of conditions associated with met and unmet needs. Qualitative data from the surveys and 21 in-depth interviews were analyzed thematically. Key integrated findings show social and economic factors act in combination to affect outcomes of met and unmet mental health care needs, including the gray areas of “needs partially met.” Configurations of conditions which included lack of perceived suicide stigma, …
The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Polygenic Risk Scores On Body Mass Index Among Non-Hispanic White Americans, Tomiwa Joshua Ayetigbo
The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Polygenic Risk Scores On Body Mass Index Among Non-Hispanic White Americans, Tomiwa Joshua Ayetigbo
All ETDs from UAB
The prevalence of obesity in the United States remains high, especially among individuals of low socioeconomic status (SES). Studies examining the joint influence of genetics and social factors, such as early life SES and education, in association with obesity remain underreported. These social factors might be related to a heightened risk of obesity. Genetic factors may further exacerbate the high-weight predisposition of those at risk. Genetic and social factors may act together to shape individuals’ weight. Therefore, this research ex-amined (a) whether the association between polygenic risk for BMI (PGS-BMI) and Body Mass Index (BMI) is independently modified by early …
The Flint Water Crisis And The Perpetuation Of Environmental Racism In Flint, Michigan (2014–2018), Olugbenga Okunade
The Flint Water Crisis And The Perpetuation Of Environmental Racism In Flint, Michigan (2014–2018), Olugbenga Okunade
Student Scholarship
The nexus between environmental racism and racial capitalism has been well documented. However, the government is often blamed for the perpetuation of some forms of environmental racism. Nonetheless, blaming the government for environmental racism without documenting some actions and policy implementation by the government to mitigate or prevent the re-occurrence of environmental racism tends to be a one-sided view. Consequently, this study examines how the American government plays some roles in the occurrence of environmental racism, that is, the Flint Water Crisis (FWC) in Michigan. Racial capitalism theory is used as a theoretical lens in this study. Racial capitalism, historical …
Applying The 5ps Of Cultural Ecosystem Services For Urban Agricultural And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I. Rodriguez Gonzalez
Applying The 5ps Of Cultural Ecosystem Services For Urban Agricultural And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I. Rodriguez Gonzalez
Journal of Extension
Beyond adapting extension programs for an urban audience, Urban Extension strives to reach an underserved audience that hugely overlaps with marginalized populations. This means that cultural competence is crucial for successful program implementation. The following article outlines the application of the 5P framework of Cultural Ecosystem Services as a tool for laying out the base to a culturally competent extension program. Although originally intended for urban planners, when applied widely for program development it allows accounting for place, past, people, practices, and purposes in a simple manner without overlooking importance context pertaining the target audience.
Creating The E-Buzz Around Collaborative And Collective Dei Efforts In Academic Libraries, Essraa Nawar, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker
Creating The E-Buzz Around Collaborative And Collective Dei Efforts In Academic Libraries, Essraa Nawar, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker
Library Articles and Research
Like many academic libraries, the Leatherby Libraries at Chapman University (USA) is committed to supporting and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for students, faculty, researchers, and staff and has increased its efforts in the last several years to reflect that commitment through its resources, services, and outreach activities. However, in the wider literature, the efforts of scholarly communication librarians in DEI initiatives outside of openaccess advocacy are less discussed. Nevertheless, precisely because scholarly communication librarians are concerned with advancing the dissemination of knowledge, they fit naturally into DEI efforts that seek to elevate new or historically marginalized voices and …
Deconstructing Ageism And Quality Of Life Among Older Informal Workers : A Mixed-Methods Study In Ghana, Samuel Ampadu Oteng
Deconstructing Ageism And Quality Of Life Among Older Informal Workers : A Mixed-Methods Study In Ghana, Samuel Ampadu Oteng
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Despite growing research on ageism and the aging workforce, few studies have examined the perspectives and experiences of older workers in the informal economy. Also, while research has acknowledged common pathways linking ageism to relevant outcomes across older individuals, the contextual nuances within these intersections, particularly for informal sector workers in less developed countries, have been overlooked. This knowledge gap limits our understanding of the ageism faced by this population and hinders the development of evidence-based policies to address their needs. To address this gap, this study employs an exploratory sequential mixed-methods approach to investigate the nature and effects of …
