Civic Education For Civic Leadership: Renewing Faith In Democracy, Ryan V. Weaver
Civic Education For Civic Leadership: Renewing Faith In Democracy, Ryan V. Weaver
eJournal of Public Affairs
Civic education and civic leadership are at the forefront of renewing faith in democracy on our campuses and communities. There is an urgent need for higher education to return to its historical foundation to fulfill the mission of democracy by educating students for democratic citizenship (Harkavy, 2006). Effectively integrating curricular and co-curricular civic engagement involves a balanced approach that is “both political and non-political” (Ehrlich, 2000, p. vi) to guide students to identify core values, develop civic knowledge, and build civic leadership skills (Finley, 2011; Hurtado, 2019). Civic leadership is an integral student learning outcome embedded within civic engagement praxis, …

Championing The City Motto: An Analysis Of Edmonton’S Un/Official Slogan, Nathan Bunio, Elvin Wyly
The Geographical Bulletin
This article examines urban slogans using a case study of Edmonton’s unofficial motto; “City of Champions.” We will be exploring the decision-making process regarding the city slogan, specifically who creates and adopts a city slogan, and what the relationship is between a city’s slogan and its residents. The analysis focuses on events in 2003, when the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation suggested creating a new slogan for the City, prompting a debate over whether to keep or discard the old slogan: “City of Champions.” We carried out a historical case study, using newspaper articles, blogs, and city documents, to gauge public …

Spatial Crime Displacement On Chicago’S South Side, David Melsness, Ryan Weichelt
The Geographical Bulletin
This research examines the effects of population displacement after the demolition of the Robert Taylor Homes (in Chicago’s 2nd Police District) on crime in neighboring police districts that serve impoverished, racially segregated, high-crime neighborhoods where many former residents relocated. The objective is to analyze possible relationships between the demolition of the housing project and crime trends of murder, robbery, and total reported index crime in surrounding police districts and police beats through the use of hotspot analysis.

Built Environment And Anxiety Among Adolescents: To What Extent Can Resilient Family Protect Youth?, Yangjin Park, Bethany Wood, Jandel Crutchfield, Keundeok Park
SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive
One third of U.S. adolescents experience anxiety. As adolescents spend more time outside the family, built environmental risk factors become salient. Although resilient family protects youth from various adversities, it is unclear how effective family resilience can buffer extrafamilial risks. This study examined the moderating role of family resilience in the association between neighborhood, school, and racial discrimination risk factors on adolescent anxiety. Using multiyear data (2016–2020) from the National Survey of Children’s Health (n = 81,809), the hierarchical logistic regression analysis suggests that neighborhood violence/safety, lack of neighborhood support, lack of school engagement, lack of school safety, and …

The humanities have the potential to enhance STEM curriculum in career-oriented professional degree programs. As part of a larger college-wide initiative to develop interdisciplinary curricula, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) awarded a grant to New York City College of Technology to explore the relationship between the humanities and career-focused degree programs in STEM departments. This article describes the design and implementation of coursework that bridges the curricular divides between humanities disciplines and technical or career-focused disciplines by bringing the humanities to bear on science and technology-oriented courses. Specifically, the humanities served to improve technical skills for students in …

Facebook As A Way Oflife: Louis Wirth In Thesocial Network, Larissa Zip, Rebekah Parker, Elvin Wyly
Facebook As A Way Oflife: Louis Wirth In Thesocial Network, Larissa Zip, Rebekah Parker, Elvin Wyly
The Geographical Bulletin
The rise of social networking practices has inspired widespread public debate and scholarly attention: a growing share of social relations began to take place online in the virtual worlds of social media sites at the same time that the ‘real’ world became majority-urban. What are the implications of these trends for how we understand the geography of urban society? In this paper, we re-engage one of the foundational contributions of twentieth-century Chicago School sociology, Louis Wirth’s article “Urbanism as a Way of Life,” (1938) to understand the socio-spatial implications of social media in an era of planetary urbanization. A growing …

A Socioecological And Maqāṣidi Analysis Of Domestic Gender-Based Violence In Yemen, Belqes Al-Sowaidi
A Socioecological And Maqāṣidi Analysis Of Domestic Gender-Based Violence In Yemen, Belqes Al-Sowaidi
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study uses an integrated multidimensional lens to investigate the ongoing issue of domestic gender-based violence (DGBV) against women in conflict areas of Yemen, with a specific focus on the city of Taiz. Yemeni society has historically operated within a framework emphasizing traditional gender roles, which can unfortunately lead to situations where women bear the brunt of societal pressures and misattributed blame. Against this backdrop, this study explores the nature and causes of violence faced by Yemeni women during the period 2021-2023, as well as the role of Islam in addressing and curbing violence against women in Muslim societies. Through …

Swiping The Norms: Feminist Dating Apps And Indonesian Women’S Dating Scene Realities, Anastasia Cindy Marco, Virienia Puspita
Journal of International Women's Studies
This research aims to investigate the dynamics of gender roles by focusing on the standpoint of women users of the feminist dating app Bumble. This app has emerged in Indonesia as one of the most popular platforms to meet potential partners, and it has provided a unique setting to examine how traditional and evolving gender roles manifest in online dating. By first analyzing women users’ behaviors, preferences, and interactions, this study sheds light on how gender roles and cultural norms influence the dating experience in the digital realm. Qualitative interviews were conducted with ten dating app users to gain deeper …

#Arewametoo: Localized Resistance To The Abuse Of Women In Northern Nigeria, Ololade Afolabi, Hauwa Nuhu Shaffi
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article explores the development of the #ArewaMeToo movement in Northern Nigeria. The study is contextualized within the theory of transnational feminism to argue that digital practices among non-Western women are more than merely a technological advancement and are significantly attuned to the socio-political climate of their societies. Therefore, as the #MeToo movement which began in the West goes global, women in Northern Nigerian have found a space to effect social change by resisting socio-cultural practices that challenge their social agency. Using the interview method, we articulate the uniqueness of #ArewaMeToo as a movement that is rooted in specific sociocultural …
The Ban On Beauty Parlors In Taliban-Led Afghanistan: Deconstructing Antipodal Ideologies, Akshra Mehla
The Ban On Beauty Parlors In Taliban-Led Afghanistan: Deconstructing Antipodal Ideologies, Akshra Mehla
Journal of International Women's Studies
Recently, the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan banned all beauty parlors, stating cultural reasons that the existence of such parlors violates the tenets of Islam. They also cited another reason for shutting down beauty parlors: that it puts an unnecessary financial burden on a groom’s family during marriages. The paper analyzes the policy decision by the Taliban government in light of the public-private divide, theories of Islamic feminism, and feminist understanding of the beauty industry. The author argues that sole application of either a feminist critique of the public-private divide or a feminist critique of beauty ideals fails to provide a …
Women, Militarism, And Political Representation: The Case Of Armenia, Valentine M. Moghadam, Marisa Goolgasian
Women, Militarism, And Political Representation: The Case Of Armenia, Valentine M. Moghadam, Marisa Goolgasian
Journal of International Women's Studies
How does militarism affect women’s presence in the political process? Through a focus on the Republic of Armenia during the period 1990-2020, we examine the puzzle of women’s political representation. The country’s legacy of communist-era ideology of women’s equality, its democratic transition, women’s high levels of educational attainment and labor force participation, and the 2007 gender quota adoption should have served to place Armenia in the top 50 countries in women’s political representation. Yet for two decades, the country appeared low on international rankings of women’s political empowerment. To unpack this puzzle, we revisit two strands of the women-and-war literature—one …

Analysis Of The Implications Of The Water Convention And Protocols For Water And Health, Ester Indahyani Jusuf, Tiurma Mangihut Pitta Allagan, Tris Eryando
Indonesian Journal of International Law
Many international conventions contain positive values for humanity, which are in line with the human rights values guaranteed by our country’s constitution. The Indonesian state constitutionally guarantees the right of every Indonesian citizen to live a healthy and prosperous life, including providing water for every Indonesian citizen. However, it turns out that the Indonesian State has so far chosen not to ratify or access the Water Convention and the Water and Health Protocol, the contents of which are the good intentions of the countries participating in the convention to maintain the availability and quality of world water. This article provides …
Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick
Emotional Display Rules Of Deaf Culture, Nicholas M. Gala, Lawrence Pick
JADARA
Emotional display rules refer to the expression of culturally prescribed and socially acceptable emotions across different people and situations (Wu & Schulz, 2020). The display rules among hearing adults across several cultures are well defined and depend on the type of emotion, the individuals involved in the exchange, and the situation. Regarding Deaf culture in the United States, this minoritized group may follow unique display rules (Hosie et al., 2000), but there has been almost no research conducted with this population and the existing studies have focused on youth. The present study explores perceived emotional expressions among a sample of …
Ideational Diffusion And The Great Witch Hunt In Central Europe, Kerice Doten‑Snitker, Steven Pfaff, Yuan Hsiao
Ideational Diffusion And The Great Witch Hunt In Central Europe, Kerice Doten‑Snitker, Steven Pfaff, Yuan Hsiao
Sociology Faculty Articles and Research
The great upsurge of witch trials in early modern Europe remains a historical puzzle. Popularly known as the “witch craze”, this eruption of persecution is puzzling because belief in witchcraft had existed for centuries, but large-scale witch-hunting appeared rather abruptly, spread widely, and was remarkably brutal in comparison with the past. We define a theory of ideational diffusion to describe the general process of the emergence and spread of a new idea along with its prescribed behavioral change, in this case the adoption of witch-hunting. Ideational diffusion distinguishes between the adoption of new ideas, which lead social actors to reinterpret …

A growing number of college students are nontraditional learners (age 21–65) who are people of color. These students face unique challenges in a higher education system increasingly shaped by neoliberalism and the ongoing context of institutionalized racism. In Oregon, policymakers have established ambitious goals to address racial disparities in educational attainment. In this study, focus groups and interviews were conducted with 111 Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) adult learners in Oregon to better understand their perspectives and experiences in regard to educational and career pathways. Participants included currently enrolled students, adults who had enrolled and left, and adults …

Far-Right Monologues And Extreme Identity, Benjamin Alexander Thigpen
Far-Right Monologues And Extreme Identity, Benjamin Alexander Thigpen
Dissertations and Theses
My thesis is focused on the American far-right, by way of two sperate case studies, one centered on a contemporary movement (the manosphere) and one that has fallen from prominence (racist skinheads). Grounded in primary source analysis, my thesis builds off of the work of social movement theorists such as Sidney Tarrow, scholars of American politics like Richard Hofstadter, and emergent theories of social identity as laid out by Judith Butler and others. Through my analysis, I develop two theoretical arguments: first, that there are two distinct categories amongst far-right narratives (which I term offensive and defensive); and second, that …
Notes From The Field - A Militarização Do Espaço Urbano Do Rio De Janeiro: Grupos Armados, Forças De Segurança E Forças Armadas E A Disputa Por Território, Thiago Sardinha
Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latino Studies
The Militarization of the Urban Space of Rio de Janeiro is the synthesis of different historical processes: The state through massive incarceration of black and racialized people, and the systematic elimination of black poor people from favelas through urban policing operations by security and armed forces, traffic patrols, and paramilitary/vigilante groups. Together, they result in the production of different actors that exert violent territorial domination for economic exploitation and social control.

Leadership Strategies For Sustainable Organizational Performance In Small And Medium Healthcare Businesses, Hauwa Abdulmalik Nuru
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sustainable organizational performance in small and medium healthcare businesses is crucial, given their essential role in delivering accessible healthcare services. However, these businesses often face significant sustainability and overall performance challenges. Grounded in the social exchange theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore leadership strategies that contribute to sustainable organizational performance. The participants were five healthcare leaders from Nigeria's small and medium healthcare businesses. Data were collected using semistructured interviews. Through thematic analysis, the following themes emerged: effective reward, financial incentives, recognition, patient-centric care, continuous training, and fostering innovation and adaptability. A significant recommendation is the …

Discovering Factors That Influence Young African American Males' (18-25) Satisfaction With And Trust In Northeast Ohio Police, Timothy David Finucan Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Police officers have been known to use excessive force and abuse their powers during encounters with young African American males (ages 18 to 25), which may lead to lower perception levels of police. This study provides crucial information for criminal justice professionals about the psychological and demographic factors that influence young African American males’ perceptions of police. The purpose of this study was to analyze these factors that influence how young African American males perceive law enforcement after having an encounter with the police and how to make future encounters more pleasurable. The research question in this study was used …

Water security and climate change are important priorities for communities and regions worldwide. The intersections between water and climate change extend across many environmental and human activities. This Primer is intended as an introduction, grounded in examples, for students and others considering the interactions between climate, water, and society. In this Primer, we summarize key intersections between water and climate across four sectors: environment; drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene; food and agriculture; and energy. We begin with an overview of the fundamental water dynamics within each of these four sectors, and then discuss how climate change is impacting water and …

Collective Access, Collective Liberation: Disability Justice And Abolitionist Pedagogical Worldmaking Toward Post(?)-Pandemic Futures, Hailey N. Otis
Feminist Pedagogy
This critical commentary poses the question: what if we didn’t return to the “normal” of strict, ableist classrooms policies rooted in the bureaucratic, legalistic framework of “accommodations” and, instead, embraced the Disability Justice principle of collective access? After critiquing the accommodations process used in most higher education settings, I advocate for an approach we might call collective access pedagogy, which works from the fundamental assumptions that (1) all bodies exist on a spectrum of dis/ability and, thus, we all have individual needs based on our unique bodyminds, and (2) that we don’t need the constant threat of a pandemic to …
