OBJECTIVES: Trauma-induced coagulopathy (TIC) occurs in a subset of severely injured trauma patients. Despite having achieved surgical hemostasis, these individuals can have persistent bleeding, clotting, or both in conjunction with deranged coagulation parameters and typically require transfusion support with plasma, platelets, and/or cryoprecipitate. Due to the multifactorial nature of TIC, targeted interventions usually do not have significant clinical benefits. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a non-specific modality of removing and replacing a patient's plasma in a euvolemic manner that can temporarily normalize coagulation parameters and remove deleterious substances, and may be beneficial in such patients with TIC.

This paper explores the exposome concept and its role in elucidating the interplay between environmental exposures and human health. We introduce two key concepts critical for exposomics research. Firstly, we discuss the joint impact of genetics and environment on phenotypes, emphasizing the variance attributable to shared and nonshared environmental factors, underscoring the complexity of quantifying the exposome's influence on health outcomes. Secondly, we introduce the importance of advanced data-driven methods in large cohort studies for exposomic measurements. Here, we introduce the exposome-wide association study (ExWAS), an approach designed for systematic discovery of relationships between phenotypes and various exposures, identifying significant …

Automated Stategraft: Electronic Enforcement Technology And The Economic Predation Of Black Communities, Sonia Gipson Rankin, Melanie E. Moses, Kathy Powers

Automated traffic enforcement systems disproportionately impact Black communities in the United States. This Essay uncovers a troubling reality: while technologies such as speed cameras and red light cameras are often touted as tools for public safety by the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration, they disproportionately burden Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. The authors coin the term “automated stategraft” to describe this phenomenon—an insidious process that siphons financial resources from already vulnerable groups under the guise of law enforcement. In doing so, it exacerbates economic disparities and erodes trust in legal and governmental institutions.
This Essay delves into the biases inherent in …

Trial By Ambush: The Prosecution Of Indians In Federal Court, Samuel Winder

This Article addresses the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure’s unjust impact in the prosecution of Indians in federal court. As the rules of engagement used by federal prosecutors and defense attorneys in federal court when prosecuting Indians under the Major Crimes Act and the General Crimes Act, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure differ from those of Civil Procedure with regard to discovery procedures. Specifically, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure are unjust because they do not allow defense attorneys to conduct pretrial interviews or depositions of prospective witnesses whose evidence the United States will introduce at trial or use …

In the last four decades, average temperatures have risen significantly across the United States, with Alaska and New Mexico among the fastest warming states. Since 1970, average temperatures in New Mexico have risen 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit (°F)—or nearly 2 degrees Celsius (°C). The international scientific community has urged world leaders to contain global warming above pre-industrial levels to 1.5°C ideally, and to 2°C at worst. Current trajectories, however, suggest we may shoot past 2°C of global warming this century and enter a world of 3-4°C or beyond... The “trade offs” and “letting go” as we confront the looming 4°C world …

Not forgetting old class knowledge is a key challenge for class-incremental learning (CIL) when the model continuously adapts to new classes. A common technique to address this is knowledge distillation (KD), which penalizes prediction inconsistencies between old and new models. Such prediction is made with almost new class data, as old class data is extremely scarce due to the strict memory limitation in CIL. In this paper, we take a deep dive into KD losses and find that "using new class data for KD"not only hinders the model adaption (for learning new classes) but also results in low efficiency for …

The Metaverse, Religious Practice And Wellbeing: A Narrative Review, Justin Thomas, Mohammad Amin Kuhail, Fahad Albeyahi
All Works
The metaverse is touted as the next phase in the evolution of the Internet. This emerging digital ecosystem is widely conceptualized as a persistent matrix of interconnected multiuser, massively scaled online environments optimally experienced through immersive digital technologies such as virtual reality (VR). Much of the prognostication about the social implications of the metaverse center on secular activities. For example, retail, entertainment (gaming/concerts), and social networking. Little attention has been given to how the metaverse might impact religion. This narrative review explores contemporary research into online religious practice and the use of immersive digital technologies for religious purposes. This focus …
The Era Of Generative Ai: Transforming Academic Libraries, Education, And Research, Nikesh Narayanan
The Era Of Generative Ai: Transforming Academic Libraries, Education, And Research, Nikesh Narayanan
All Works
The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) marks a transformative era in technological progression, reshaping our interaction and integration with technology. This advanced AI genre, celebrated for its ability to create novel content and innovative solutions, catalyzes a revolution in diverse sectors. Its influence is particularly pronounced in domains reliant on information processing and dissemination, such as libraries, educational systems, and research. Generative AI transcends its role as a mere tool; it signifies a paradigm shift, fundamentally altering the landscape of knowledge creation, access, and engagement (Leiker et al., 2023; Yan et al., 2023). This transformation redefines traditional methodologies, paving …

Desirable Candidates For High-Performance Lead-Free Organic–Inorganic Halide Perovskite Solar Cells, Sajid Sajid, Salem Alzahmi, Imen Ben Salem, Nouar Tabet, Yousef Haik, Ihab M. Obaidat

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are currently demonstrating tremendous potential in terms of straightforward processing, a plentiful supply of materials, and easy architectural integration, as well as high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, the elemental composition of the widely utilized organic–inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) contains the hazardous lead (Pb). The presence of Pb in the PSCs is problematic because of its toxicity which may slow down or even impede the pace of commercialization. As a backup option, the scientific community has been looking for non-toxic/less-toxic elements that can replace Pb in OIHPs. Despite not yet matching the impressive results of Pb-containing …

Sepsis remains a major challenge that necessitates improved approaches to enhance patient outcomes. This study explored the potential of machine learning (ML) techniques to bridge the gap between clinical data and gene expression information to better predict and understand sepsis. We discuss the application of ML algorithms, including neural networks, deep learning, and ensemble methods, to address key evidence gaps and overcome the challenges in sepsis research. The lack of a clear definition of sepsis is highlighted as a major hurdle, but ML models offer a workaround by focusing on endpoint prediction. We emphasize the significance of gene transcript information …

Causes And Predictors Of Early 30-Day Rehospitalization After Isolated Elective Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery., Ahmed A Faragalla, Ahmed M Elshiemy, Sherif A Elhindawy, Ahmed A. Aziz
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Background Despite advancements in interventional cardiology, CABG remains essential for many CAD patients. While surgical outcome scoring exists, early post-CABG re-hospitalization remains poorly understood.
Aim of the work This study investigates risk factors and underlying causes of 30-day readmission following elective isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
Methods A prospective analysis of 550 consecutive elective isolated CABG patients at the National Heart Institute (January 2022 - June 2023) was undertaken to investigate the 30-day readmission rate, diagnoses, and independent predictors using a follow-up phone call strategy.
Results Analysis revealed a 2.9% (16/545) 30-day readmission rate. Surgical site infection was the …
