Generative AI (Gen AI) is shaping the future of marketing. In the next decade, Gen AI will influence how marketers interact and communicate with customers, help create and deliver marketing content (text, images, and video), and inform methods for researching and developing new products and services. In both service and sales settings, Gen AI will affect customers directly and significantly. Therefore, marketers, researchers, and public policy makers require a clear understanding of Gen AI and its potential, as well as its limitations. To assist marketers in thinking through the adoption and implementation of Gen AI, the current article presents a …

Improved Detection Of Great Lakes Water Quality Anomalies Using Remote Sensing, Karl Bosse, Robert Shuchman, Michael Sayers, John Lekki, Roger Tokars
Michigan Tech Publications
Due to their immense economic and recreational value, the monitoring of Great Lakes water quality is of utmost importance to the region. Historically, this has taken place through a combination of ship-based sampling, buoy measurements, and physical models. However, these approaches have spatial and temporal deficiencies which can be improved upon through satellite remote sensing. This study details a new approach for using long time series of satellite remote sensing data to identify historical and near real-time anomalies across a range of data products. Anomalies are traditionally detected as deviations from historical climatologies, typically assuming that there are no long-term …

Student And Teacher Outcomes: Implementing Pax Gbg In Elementary Schools, Nimisha Patel, Michelle A. Fleming, Amy Elston
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
This paper examines the implementation of the PAX Good Behavior Game (PAX GBG) in a Midwestern metropolitan area during the 2018-2019 academic year. The study focuses on baseline, midpoint, and endpoint frequencies of students’ off-task behaviors (Spleems), as well as teachers’ and administrators' self-reports of self-efficacy and resiliency. Students in PreK through Grade 5 were in classes in which teachers implemented PAX GBG. Students were enrolled in one of 195 classrooms across 13 public schools. Means were calculated for Spleems, as well as for the self-efficacy and resiliency scales. Furthermore, the Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test was used to determine the …

Making The World A Better Place: Meaningful, Reciprocal Service Learning In Costa Rica, Nora Geer
Making The World A Better Place: Meaningful, Reciprocal Service Learning In Costa Rica, Nora Geer
Capstone Collection
Despite the countless benefits that international service learning can present to host communities and student service learners, current service learnings offerings for undergraduate students remain relatively limited in quantity and intentionality. Unless international service learning programs lead with reciprocity, meaning, and sustainability, their pitfalls may exceed their advantages, resulting in an industry that leaves both communities and student participants necessitating more. The following proposed program in Costa Rica plans to lead by example, remedying service learning’s greatest shortcomings by making community relationship building its utmost priority, emphasizing cross-cultural exchange between students and community members, and offering service projects that fill …
Exploring Self-Efficacy: Key Influences Shaping First Year Students’ Self Belief During Their First Semester Abroad, Isabella Lena Agostino
Exploring Self-Efficacy: Key Influences Shaping First Year Students’ Self Belief During Their First Semester Abroad, Isabella Lena Agostino
Capstone Collection
Guided by Albert Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, this research explores the four primary sources of self-efficacy—mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion, and physiological and emotional states—and their impact on first-year students’ belief in their ability to navigate the challenges of studying and living in an international context. By examining the sources of self-efficacy, the study provides an understanding of the factors that support or hinder students’ self-efficacy during their transition and experience in a new environment.
Using a mixed methods approach, self-efficacy levels were assessed through the New General Self-Efficacy Scale (NGSE), followed by semi-structured interviews that provided qualitative insights into …

New Directions For Alcohol Interventions As Sanctions, Brendon M. Soltis
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This study examines the efficacy of TRAC 1, alcohol educational session. The results will determine if the class stimulates behavior change and will provide implications to modify the program model. The participants (n=24) have been found responsible for an alcohol policy violation and as a result attended an alcohol class in the past academic year. The data analysis grouped survey questions into clustered themes: behavior change, knowledge retention, and the conduct process experience. Within each theme, demographic variables were used as lenses to hone in on certain population experiences as well as address issues of diversity, equity, and social justice. …

Meaning-Making In Relation To Institutional Mission And Student Conduct, Lakeisha Jackson
Meaning-Making In Relation To Institutional Mission And Student Conduct, Lakeisha Jackson
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This paper examines the dynamic that exists between student conduct, meaning-making, and institutional policies. Students on college campuses across the U.S. agree to abide by a certain set of behavioral expectations upon enrollment. These policies and community standards are determined by the institution and can vary greatly depending on institutional type. Yet, regardless of the variance in the different code of conduct policies by institution type, students learn how to be a part of a procedure that mitigates conflict. Student affairs professionals are in a unique position in being at the intersection of all of these relationships, processes, and procedures. …
The Crisis Of A New Gender Gap: Male Underrepresentation In Liberal Arts Higher Education, Zachary T. Gerdes
The Crisis Of A New Gender Gap: Male Underrepresentation In Liberal Arts Higher Education, Zachary T. Gerdes
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
Women outnumber men in college attendance for the first time in United States history. Research to date has shown that while male privilege persists in the U.S. regarding some aspects of society (e.g., disproportionate numbers of men in leadership positions), men as a whole are decreasingly represented in institutions of higher learning. Liberal arts and Jesuit colleges maintain an even wider gender gap. Particularly, men of color and men from low socioeconomic backgrounds are at an increasing disadvantage in regards to admissions and scholarship review practices. The educational, biological, psychological, and social factors contributing to lack of male achievement are …

The Collegia Program: A Home Away From Home, Brian M. Wasserman
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES), the cost of college tuition, room, and board increased 42% at public institutions and 31% at private, not-for-profit institutions (U.S. Department of Education, 2012). Further, data indicate more students are choosing to live off campus (U.S. Department of Education, 1991, 2013). Yet most colleges and universities lack robust systems of support for these underserved student populations. The Collegia Program at Seattle University represents an effective program that promotes commuter and transfer student success and persistence by meeting the physical, psychological, and social needs of this population of students.
Retention Theory, Academic Advising, And Orientation: A Literature Review, Katrina Anaya, Kelly Carr
Retention Theory, Academic Advising, And Orientation: A Literature Review, Katrina Anaya, Kelly Carr
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
The purpose of this paper is to review current and applicable literature on student retention. Retention is defined as the ability of a college or university to graduate the students who initially enroll (Berger, Ramirez, & Lyon, 2012). First, retention theory and current research is explored. Then, this report focuses on academic advising and first-year orientation as it relates to student retention. Academic advising is a traditionally underestimated component of retention that is further explored in this paper. Additionally, first-year orientation creates a commitment to the institution of higher education early on in students’ academic careers. Both of these topics …
On Jesuit Education: A Reflection On The Ignatian Pedagogy And Its Relation To The Student Affairs Profession, Douglas B. Mcacy
On Jesuit Education: A Reflection On The Ignatian Pedagogy And Its Relation To The Student Affairs Profession, Douglas B. Mcacy
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
This paper offers a reflection on Jesuit education and the teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. Loyola was the founder of the Society of Jesus, a sect of Catholicism established through Papal approval some 450 years ago. The Society of Jesus places a strong emphasis on the search for knowledge and truth, education of the mind, body, and spirit, and a life of service for and with others. Through this reflection, connections can be made to living one’s own life in a way congruent with the fundamental principles set forth by the Society of Jesus.

This literature review explores the complex and often marginalized field of adult basic education (ABE). Through a social justice and empowerment lens, it examines the participants and educators engaged in ABE, as well as overarching theoretical orientations that support the field. Through an examination of past, present, and potential future issues of ABE, this analysis uncovers areas of critical focus for adult educators, leaders, and policy makers. Potential future issues discussed include migration and demographic changes in the United States, issues of technological advances and barriers, and the importance of evidence and needs-based programming and assessment. By increasing research in …
What's Race Really Got To Do With It? Investigating (In)Equity In Education Through A Critical Social Lens, Ester Sihite
What's Race Really Got To Do With It? Investigating (In)Equity In Education Through A Critical Social Lens, Ester Sihite
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
In a nation that is increasingly becoming more racially and ethnically diverse, educational literature and practice still lacks critical investigation of how systems have fared in supporting the success of historically marginalized students of color. Through an examination of contemporary literature using a critical framework, this paper presents overviews of key factors contributing to educational inequities in the education pipeline: historical legislation, funding structures, and psychosocial attitudes and paradigms of educators. Discussion of these elements bears implications for policymakers and educators and renders possibilities for critical analysis-driven change that can foster greater opportunities for educational success for students of color.

Prevent Defense: Trade Secret Protection In Professional Sports, Kevin Paule
Prevent Defense: Trade Secret Protection In Professional Sports, Kevin Paule
Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review
Data has never been more important in professional sports. On the field, players obsess over advanced statistics and the use of analytics. Off the field, front offices use newfound statistics and modeling to gain a competitive edge in setting starting lineups, drafting players, and structuring contract extensions. Stadium scoreboards and baseball cards now prominently display statistics that were an afterthought a generation ago. Thus, with this growth in analytics comes a need for teams and leagues to protect their information. Trade secret disputes are nothing new—companies have always taken efforts to protect their secrets and limit unfair competition. But, with …

Pga Tour's Anti-Trust Issues Come To A Head In The Liv Golf Controversy, Luke Haber
Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review
Professional sports leagues have seen competitor leagues arise in the past—the WHL and the NHL; the AFL and the NFL; the ABA and the NBA; and now, LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. The professional golf landscape hopes the current divide will be solved by a merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, however the PGA Tour faces unique challenges. The Tour currently classifies its players as independent contractors but retain a high degree of control over the players’ media rights and ability to play in professional golf events outside of the Tour. Additionally, critics have pointed to the …

(Anti)Competitive Football Leagues, Garry A. Gabison
Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review
This Article discusses recent decisions from the European Court of Justice dealing with football (soccer) leagues and their governing bodies. Governing bodies adopt a number of rules allegedly necessary for the good functioning of their leagues. However, many of these rules violate the competition laws. One way to circumvent competition scrutiny is through multi-club ownership. This business model may become more attractive given these recent decisions. This business model may, however, deplete the trust we have in sport competitions. More effective merger regulation may well be the last savior of sporting competition.

Pay To Cosplay: The Law Of Characters, Costumes, Masks, And Props, Bobby Desmond
Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review
Cosplay, the act of dressing up as a fictional character, has existed for nearly a century but has only recently transformed into a full-fledged career. While very few lawsuits have been filed against cosplayers in the United States and only two countries have considered legislation directly regulating cosplay, lawyers should prepare to represent individuals and businesses on a variety of legal issues as this sector of the entertainment industry grows. This Article provides cosplayers and their lawyers with insights on the types of claims that are most likely to be asserted by rightsholders, the potential defenses that may be raised …
