Analysis of PRISM and SNOTEL station data paired with USGS streamflow gage data in the western United States shows that, in snow-dominated mountainous watersheds, streamflow regimes differ between watersheds with karst geology and their non-karst neighbours. These carbonate aquifers exhibit a spectrum of flow paths encompassing karst conduits, including large fractures or voids that transmit water readily to springs and other surface waters, and matrix flow paths through soils, highly fractured bedrock, or porous media bedrock grains. A well-connected karst aquifer will discharge a large portion of its accumulated precipitation to surface water via springs and other groundwater flow paths …
Perceived Engagement And Achievement Of Students In A Career And Technical Education And Math Co-Taught Lesson In Southeast Tennessee: A Mixed Methods Study, Charis P. Reagan
Perceived Engagement And Achievement Of Students In A Career And Technical Education And Math Co-Taught Lesson In Southeast Tennessee: A Mixed Methods Study, Charis P. Reagan
Ed.D. Dissertations
Given the problem that students were not engaged in math class and were leaving high school without the basic math skills needed to be successful for college and career, the purpose of this convergent mixed methods case study was to investigate student and teacher perceptions of how math application through a Career and Technical Education (CTE) and math co-taught lesson influenced the level of student engagement in math and whether this co-teaching affected student achievement with math. As I reviewed the literature, I found a lack of studies related to co-teaching and if providing the students with the opportunity for …

Hit-And-Runs: A Memoir, Alison Cope
Hit-And-Runs: A Memoir, Alison Cope
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The vignettes in this collection are memoir essays connected by the theme of hit-and-runs – i.e., random life encounters in which people share bits of themselves and leave subsequent lasting impressions. Resonating with themes of identity and belonging, overcoming obstacles and taking risks, the chronological throughline visits unique locations around the world, and frequently “hits” historical events, while tracing the narrator’s coming-of-age and spiritual journey from the mountains of Appalachia to the streets of Prague and home to Houston, as she “runs” with carnies and psychics, hurricane refugees, lovers, and predators from whom she must escape. Interspersed in these memoirs …
“Know What I’M Sayin’?”: Advocating Hip-Hop As A Primary Source For Historical Scholarship, Christopher Smith
“Know What I’M Sayin’?”: Advocating Hip-Hop As A Primary Source For Historical Scholarship, Christopher Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rap, hip-hop’s most characteristic element, evolved from cultural practices combining in New York and spread across the United States in the latter half of the twentieth century. This thesis argues in favor of the use of rap as primary source material in future historical research. Authenticity has always surrounded hip-hop, making rap a window into artists’ perspectives. Storytelling traditions in rap’s roots allow for fiction’s use as a tool to discuss reality in lyrics. To demonstrate rap’s strengths as a primary source, the thesis examines Let’s Get Free, dead prez’s 2000 debut album. The song “They Schools” is dissected section-by-section …
The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach
The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach
American Studies ETDs
The Social Matter of Opioids: Glitches in Immunity Beyond the Human examines the contemporary opioid crisis and its relationship to capitalism, imperialism, and biomedicine. This dissertation also considers how the twin processes of crisis and racialization relate to how human-opioid entanglements perform and transgress normative anthropological assumptions of difference. Through theories of biopolitics, Black feminism, queer of color critique, and psychoanalytic insight, I argue for a more critical account of the entanglement of humans with opioids where processes of capitalist and imperial crisis produce novel forms of social ontology. I substantiate this by examining speculative tissue economies, interspecies relationality, draconian …

The Devil In The Details: The Malleus Maleficarum And Its Relationship To Regional Witchcraft Beliefs In Metz And The Corresponding Trials, Morgan Gubser
University Honors Theses
This thesis will explore witch trials in Lorraine, France, in the mid- to late-1400s, with a strong focus on trials conducted in or in reference to the city of Metz. The sixteenth century saw the period of the "great witch trials", which is often studied by those publishing in Witchcraft Studies, but a renewed scholarly focus is now being placed on the time before these great trials. By understanding these smaller outbreaks of trials that occurred in Lorraine before the sixteenth century we might hope to understand why so many trials tore through the region a century later. This thesis …

The Impact Of Transformational Leadership And Knowledge Sharing On Intention To Use Gamification In Teaching, Truong M. Vu
Dissertations, 2020-current
This paper investigates the impact of transformational leadership and knowledge sharing on university professors' intentions to use gamification in teaching, employing the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) as a theoretical framework. Gamification, defined as the integration of game-based mechanics to promote learning and engagement, has shown significant potential in enhancing educational experiences but remains underutilized in higher education. This study suggests that knowledge sharing is a critical antecedent influencing the perceived ease of use, usefulness, and adoption of gamification by educators. Using a quantitative methodology, data are collected from 204 university professors in Vietnam, analyzing their perceptions of transformational leadership behaviors, …

Objectives. Physical computing systems are increasingly being integrated into secondary school science and STEM instruction, yet little is known about how teachers, especially those with little background and experience in computing, help students during the inevitable debugging moments that arise. In this article, we describe a framework, comprising two dimensions, for characterizing how teachers support students as they debug a physical computing system called the Data Sensor Hub (DASH). The DASH enables students to program sensors to measure, analyze, and visualize data as they engage in science inquiry activities
Participants. Five secondary school teachers implemented an inquiry-oriented instructional …

Reducing No-Shows In A Behavioral Health Setting: A Program Evaluation, Meagan Evans
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Mental healthcare in America faces many significant challenges; this is especially true in rural regions like Southwest Virginia. When patients miss their scheduled appointments, it represents a lost opportunity to deliver the critical mental health services that other individuals in need could have benefited from. A significant access issue presents itself when patients are not able to get the mental health support they need. The lack of outpatient access leads to patients utilizing emergency rooms inappropriately for what could have been routine care visits. A multitude of factors can contribute to patients failing to attend their scheduled appointments, including transportation …

Implementation Of An Advanced Practice Provider Into The Outpatient Neurology Clinic To Improve Access To Care And Medication Compliance, Sean O'Laughlin
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
The American Association of Neurology (AAN) recommended that post-stroke and TIA patients receive follow-up care within 2–4 weeks of discharge to reduce complications, improve medication adherence, and decrease readmission rates (2023). However, in 2022, a Central Virginia neurology practice reported an average wait time of 98.66 days for outpatient follow-up appointments, significantly exceeding the AAN recommendation, while medication adherence was only 72.23%, compared to the national average of 80%. Research by the American Academy of Neurology Workforce Task Force (2013) and Woo et al. (2017) highlighted that incorporating advanced practice nurses into outpatient settings could enhance access to care and …
Naloxone Prescribing At Hospital Discharge: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Timothy Ford
Naloxone Prescribing At Hospital Discharge: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Timothy Ford
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Opioid overdose deaths remain one of the largest public health challenges in the United States. Naloxone allocation is an important tool to help combat opioid overdose deaths. The literature supports that hospitalized patients are generally receptive to receiving naloxone and opioid education and interdisciplinary teams working together can help facilitate identification of high-risk patients for naloxone allocation. This quality improvement change, guided by the IHI Triple Aims and Model for Healthcare Improvement frameworks, sought to increase the rate of patients leaving the Hospital Medicine Service with naloxone. To accomplish this, during the target units’ daily interdisciplinary rounds, providers were prompted …

Implementation Of A Standardized Screening And Referral Process For Social Determinants Of Health For Families With Children Within Two Rural Health Clinics, Laura Britton Stace
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Abstract
The American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures Guidelines recommends social determinants of health (SDOH) screening at well-child checks (WCCs). Social determinants of health are environmental factors, including food accessibility, mental health, and substance use, that can affect quality of life.
Rural health clinics (RHCs) in a county in Virginia did not routinely use a standardized screener to identify pediatric SDOH risks, nor did they have a standardized referral process for identifying SDOH risks. A hospital community needs assessment found that over 20% of the county households were below the federal poverty level. It is estimated that many children in …

Brands are increasingly paying attention to the purchasing power of female consumers. In recent years, many brands have added female elements to their brand stories to promote gender equality in society. This provides more opportunities for brands to express their values. However, while the women's movement in Western countries has been in full swing, feminism in Eastern countries is still being explored. This paper examines the best practices in three East Asian countries - China, Japan, and South Korea - for incorporating women's causes into brand identity and probing the development of women's themes in corporate cultures. Meretseger, “She Who Loves Silence,” the cobra goddess of the Theban necropolis and local deity of Deir el-Medina, is well attested for in the New Kingdom. This single sentence makes up most of the information in publications today, derived from Bernard Bruyère’s Mert Seger à Deir el Médineh (1929-1930), the only study dedicated to the “Mistress of the West.” Since then, new evidence has been found after 1930 and has not been compiled into a single publication until now. This thesis will reexamine Meretseger to form a more accurate, up-to-date study of her attestations and iconographic representations and trace her …
Geomorphic Evolution Of St. Augustine Inlet, St. Johns County, Florida, Kristen Becker
Geomorphic Evolution Of St. Augustine Inlet, St. Johns County, Florida, Kristen Becker
Theses and Dissertations
Tidal inlets interrupt longshore sediment transport, influencing adjacent beach morphology and allowing the exchange of water and sediment between the open oceans and protected back barrier bay. Inlets evolve through a combination of natural processes and are highly dynamic zones where sediment exchanges cause shifting shoreline positions nearby and create new morphological features. Barrier islands/beaches that are close in proximity to inlets evolve and are an important natural feature that dissipates wave energy and protects inland areas. Both natural and anthropogenic processes that affect barrier islands will be investigated during this study, including storm activity, waves, wind, water level, and …
