Predictors Of Low Birthweight Using Data From Electronic Medical Records In Flint, Michigan, 2013 To 2016, Rie Suzuki, Neida Monroy-Sechague
Michigan Journal of Public Health
Introduction: Infant mortality continues to be a major health problem in Michigan, with low birthweight (LBW) being a leading cause. Between 2020 and 2022, Black infants were nearly twice as likely to be LBW compared to White infants. The purpose of this study was to use electronic medical records (EMR) data to assess predictors of LBW and determine whether race influenced this relationship using a unique data source of EMR in Flint, Michigan (MI).
Methods: A retrospective study from 2013 to 2016 was conducted at the Health Resources and Services Administration local health center in Flint, MI. Demographics, birth …

A Statistical Approach For Systematic Identification Of Transition Cells From Scrna-Seq Data, Yuanxin Wang, Merve Dede, Vakul Mohanty, Jinzhuang Dou, Ziyi Li, Ken Chen
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Decoding cellular state transitions is crucial for understanding complex biological processes in development and disease. While recent advancements in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) offer insights into cellular trajectories, existing tools primarily study expressional rather than regulatory state shifts. We present CellTran, a statistical approach utilizing paired-gene expression correlations to detect transition cells from scRNA-seq data without explicitly resolving gene regulatory networks. Applying our approach to various contexts, including tissue regeneration, embryonic development, preinvasive lesions, and humoral responses post-vaccination, reveals transition cells and their distinct gene expression profiles. Our study sheds light on the underlying molecular mechanisms driving cellular state transitions, …

Professional Practices (ART 399)
Often, I find myself following the mindset of “go, go, go”. I get caught up in the rush and chaos of the world. The bold, stimulating designs that are prevalent today further feed into the need to constantly to keep busy. To counter this, I like to bring a little bit of the past into my designs. I see it as a throwback to a time when things were simpler. Whether it be through the font, color palette, or illustration style, I embrace the chance to use a blast from the past.
I create designs that find the medium between …
Testing Routine Activity Theory: Behavioural Pathways Linking Temperature To Crime, Christopher Thomas, Jinuk Jeong, Kevin T. Wolff
Testing Routine Activity Theory: Behavioural Pathways Linking Temperature To Crime, Christopher Thomas, Jinuk Jeong, Kevin T. Wolff
Publications and Research
This study examines direct observations of outdoor routine activities to investigate the pathways through which temperatures shape crime. Daily administrative records of crime, weather, and outdoor activity were assembled from 2015 to 2019 in New York City. Mediation analysis (with bootstrapped standard errors) reveals that alterations in routine activities account for a statistically significant, yet modest, proportion of temperature’s relationship with homicides, shootings, assaults, larceny, and public consumption violations. The comparable mediation effects across violent and nonviolent crimes support routine activity theory as an explanatory framework for understanding temperature's impact on crime. The measures introduced here offer a novel approach …
Innovations In Educational Research: Developing An Original Questionnaire To Measure New Mexico’S Teacher Practices And Beliefs Related To Project-Based Learning And Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Teaching, Zachary R. Ramsey
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This dissertation investigates teacher practices and beliefs related to project-based learning (PBL) and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLRT), central to New Mexico’s educational reform efforts following Martinez & Yazzie v. New Mexico (2018). The study also explored teachers’ professional learning needs and their awareness of the state’s reform initiatives. I collected responses from 37 participants using an original questionnaire instrument. While the findings are not generalizable, they reveal that teachers practiced elements of PBL and CLRT with moderate frequency and generally believed in their efficacy for improving educational outcomes for diverse student groups. The results also highlighted varying levels …

A Mechanistic Study Of Silicon Nanocrystal Formation Via Solid State Synthesis, Katherine Mccarthy Weinfurter
A Mechanistic Study Of Silicon Nanocrystal Formation Via Solid State Synthesis, Katherine Mccarthy Weinfurter
Dissertations and Theses
Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) show promising physiochemical properties that could be used in industrial applications. The production of SiNCs through solid-state synthesis is ideal due to relatively low cost of equipment and chemical reagents, as well as the ability to scale-up production. A widely known and commonly used precursor previously used in solid-state synthesis for SiNCs, hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSiO1.5), was discontinued in chemical manufacturing, which has led to researching alternative precursors (or starting materials). We have identified that there is a gap of knowledge related to producing these precursors, as well as the mechanistic understanding of the chemical reactions …

Nicholas, M. Kiernan, R. A. Burton, L. Belfield, G. Montagut, A. Benavente, W. Vevers, T. Gabaldón, Z. Brookes, P. Casas-Agustench
School of Health Professions
BACKGROUND: Propolis mouthwash (PROP-M) has demonstrated antibacterial properties like those of chlorhexidine mouthwash (CHX-M). However, its impact on the abundance of oral nitrite-producing species (NPS) and nitrite-producing activity (NPA) remains unexplored.
METHODS: Forty-five healthy individuals were randomised into 2 groups to rinse their mouth twice a day for seven days with either CHX-M ( n = 21) or PROP-M ( n = 24). Metagenomic sequencing (16S rRNA) was performed on saliva samples collected before and after each treatment. Additionally, salivary biomarkers and blood pressure were measured.
RESULTS: CHX-M increased the relative abundance of NPS ( p < 0.001) but significantly impaired the NPA ( p < 0.001) compared to baseline and PROP-M. No significant differences in the relative abundance of NPS and NPA were observed in the PROP-M group. However, a significant increase of plasma nitrate (+7 µmol/L, p = 0.047) and a decrease in systolic BP (-2 mmHg, p = 0.022) was observed in this group compared to the baseline.
CONCLUSION: The results indicate …

Alkali activation for producing alkali-activated materials is noted as a complex due to involving several reactions. due to complexity of the reactions, various techniques have been applied by past researches on monitoring the evolution of alkali-activated materials. The evolution monitored during alkali activation include internal relative humidity, structural evolution, ultrasonic evolution and heat evolution. all of these techniques provide real-time information which is significant for evaluating the reaction process of alkali activation with respected parameters applied thus will be briefly reviewed in this paper. in addition, among those techniques, due to its reliability, heat evolution is one noted as one …
Orosipon Kan Bikolnon: Interrupting The Nation, Raniela Barbaza
Orosipon Kan Bikolnon: Interrupting The Nation, Raniela Barbaza
Kritika Kultura
If narration points to notions of fixity in terms of the position of the narrator and the subsequent structuring of events, orosipon, a Bikolnon word for “story,” suggests a refusal to fixity both in terms of the location of the narrator and the structure itself of the story: the story never stops being formed as it passes through multiple speakers. Orosipon, coming from the root word osip which approximates the verb “tell,” points to more than one person involved in an act of telling, which makes the act of telling proper to no one in particular: indeed, it is improper …
Crossing Borders: Philippine Activist Theater And Martial Law, Bonifacio P. Ilagan
Crossing Borders: Philippine Activist Theater And Martial Law, Bonifacio P. Ilagan
Kritika Kultura
Positing theater as political, this paper intends to locate activist theater in the context of the Philippine cultural setting and political milieu on the eve of the Martial Law declaration in 1972. It shall illustrate why this kind of theater, frowned upon by some sectors in the artistic community, had taken unto itself the task of redefining the stage and employing it in a political mass movement that ultimately blazed a trail in Philippine theater and also challenged the socioeconomic structures of society. This paper integrates the theory and practice of the activist theater in the Philippines in the late …
Philippine Theater In Confinement: Breaking Out Of Martial Law, Bienvenido Lumbera
Philippine Theater In Confinement: Breaking Out Of Martial Law, Bienvenido Lumbera
Kritika Kultura
The declaration of Martial Law during the Marcos administration brought about a period of censorship and a complete rejection of any form of protest against the established figures of authority. Activists then looked for other forms of communication through which they could channel their dissent and rally more people towards the cause. It was during this period that Philippine theater was taken out of the stage and into the streets, when the “art” of the “elite” was brought down to the masses. These efforts also shifted the language of Philippine theater from American English to Pilipino, marking the beginning of …

Playwriting In The Time Of Exigency, Rodolfo Vera
Kritika Kultura
This is a personal testimony of a dramatist trained and honed in the craft of drama and stage during the Marcos dictatorship. Unable to finish college, and without a formal training in drama or playwriting, my main reason for writing and struggling in the field of theater was to be able to address the need for change in the Filipino audience’s social consciousness. It will deal with the following topics: what my training ground had been like under the informal guidance of playwrights who had just a little bit more training than I had in the craft, the different dramatic …
"He Calls His Dada Still": Nineteenth-Century English Radicalism And The Drama Of Pádraic Pearse, James Moran
"He Calls His Dada Still": Nineteenth-Century English Radicalism And The Drama Of Pádraic Pearse, James Moran
Kritika Kultura
This essay explores the extent to which some of the political upheavals of twentieth-century Ireland, and their related theatrical manifestations, might reveal a series of affinities with the organised political radicalism of nineteenth-century England. Specifically, the playhouse dramas written by the executed leader of the Easter Rising of 1916, Pádraic Pearse (also known as Pádraig or Patrick) point back to the earlier Liberal reform meetings that took place in the English midlands. The key connecting figure is the revolutionary leader’s father, James Pearse, who spent his life between Birmingham and Dublin, but who has tended to be overlooked by historians …
Socialist Shenanigans And Emerald Epiphanies: The Case Of Margaretta D'Arcy And John Arden, Tim Prentki
Socialist Shenanigans And Emerald Epiphanies: The Case Of Margaretta D'Arcy And John Arden, Tim Prentki
Kritika Kultura
This essay explores the two meanings of “radical” – the popular one of “sharp-edged’”or “extreme” and the original one of “rooted within the culture” – in relation to selected works of D’Arcy and Arden: The Non-Stop Connolly Show (1975), Vandaleur’s Folly (1978) and The Little Gray Home in the West (1978). Within the space of contradiction between these meanings, the paper considers such issues as the political function of the outsider, the rival claims of reform and revolution, relationships between text and means of production and between forms and audience ownership. The perennial question of the battle between republicanism and …
"Not Always, But Often": Introduction To A Special Issue On Radical Theatre And Ireland, Victor Merriman
"Not Always, But Often": Introduction To A Special Issue On Radical Theatre And Ireland, Victor Merriman
Kritika Kultura
This article sketches Irish history and how Irish nationalism deployed cultural production – including radical theatre – as a means of asserting itself as a political and moral force. “Radical Theatre” prompts questions around what both Baz Kershaw and Herbert Blau refer to as “efficacy,” insofar as it implies engagements with content, form, and audiences outside of those which characterise accepted, dominant or commercial manifestations of theatre practice. And yet, scholars and practitioners of radical theatre confront the slipperiness of the concept of radical theatre: it shifts emphasis between theatre as cultural intervention for social progress (a critical, subversive, ethical …
History As Rumor: The Political Fantasy Of The Negrense Elite In Vicente Groyon'sthe Sky Over Dimas, Mayel P. Martin
History As Rumor: The Political Fantasy Of The Negrense Elite In Vicente Groyon'sthe Sky Over Dimas, Mayel P. Martin
Kritika Kultura
This ideological critique reads Vicente Groyon’s The Sky Over Dimas in its appropriation of historiographic metafiction. The paper argues that its two borrowed modes, historiography and metafiction, function as a symbolic act following Fredric Jameson’s Marxist interpretive ground of the political. In The Sky Over Dimas, historiographic metafiction is a symbolic act that articulates the political unconscious/fantasy of the landed elite while repressing their role in the perpetuation of the feudal system of sugar in Negros. This provisionalizing or bracketing of history in the novel, unlike other historiographic metafictional texts like Great Philippine Jungle Energy Café, State of War and …
The Colonial Doubling, Or The Challenge For Colonial Authority, Yohanes Hartadi
The Colonial Doubling, Or The Challenge For Colonial Authority, Yohanes Hartadi
Kritika Kultura
This essay discusses R.M. Minke’s (partial) presence in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s The Buru Quartet. The quartet starts with signs exhibiting the triumph of Western colonialism in the Dutch East Indies. The Western-educated Minke acknowledges the superiority of Western science and technology. He writes in Dutch, the signifier of the colonial authority. This essay examines Minke’s adoption of Western culture and the colonial representation where his (partial) presence challenges the authority of colonial discourse. Framed within Bhabha’s theory of hybridity, this essay will find out how the colonial discourse is always in the state of splitting which menaces the colonial authority.

Short Notations And Reflections On Pantayong Pananaw, Aaron Rom O. Moralina
Kritika Kultura
This paper answers the question “What is Pantayong Pananaw?” through the subject of its study, its methods, its mode of communicating knowledge, and how it has served as a conscious effort of counteracting Western historiographic discourse. It also discusses the limitations and pitfalls of Pantayong Pananaw as well as its possible directions and trajectories.
Pantayong Pananaw And The History Of Philippine Political Concepts, Ramon Guillermo
Pantayong Pananaw And The History Of Philippine Political Concepts, Ramon Guillermo
Kritika Kultura
Zeus A. Salazar’s approach in writing the history of political concepts in the Philippines represents one of the most challenging and insightful directions within his complex body of work. However, despite its positive contribution to this area of study, it seems that further advances towards a more productive and empirical direction is hampered by certain unnecessarily restrictive assumptions. This study is a preliminary critique of a significant flaw in his approach which gives priority to the etymological meaning of rootwords as opposed to a more empirically oriented approach based on the study of the “semantic fields” of concepts and the …
Global Perspectives On Modernity And Modernism: Some Notes On Twentieth-Century Transnational Anticolonial Metaphysics, Leela Gandhi
Global Perspectives On Modernity And Modernism: Some Notes On Twentieth-Century Transnational Anticolonial Metaphysics, Leela Gandhi
Kritika Kultura
These notes are structured around the contention that the early years of the twentieth century witnessed the emergence of a transnational heterodox metaphysics, or properly speaking, postmetaphysics, whose bearer would be the subject of a distinctly modern form of nonviolence. Did these discourses designate a coherent global ethics that we might draw upon to counter the pernicious epidemic of harmfulness in the present world? Can we identify the historical and philosophical catalysts for early twentieth-century postmetaphysics? What bearing does this “movement,” if we may call it that, have upon the question of colonialism? These are some of the questions canvassed …

Paraphrasing Europe: Translation In Contemporary Filipino History, Portia L. Reyes, Ramon Guillermo
Kritika Kultura
This paper studies three annotated translations into Filipino that have been inspired by the controversial historiographical movement called Pantayong Pananaw (from us-for us perspective), which argued for the use of the national language in academic study: San Agustin’s 1720 letter (by Dedina Lapar), Canseco’s 1897 account of Cavite during the Philippine Revolution (by Rhommel Hernandez), and Marx and Engel’s 1848 Communist Manifesto (by Zeus Salazar). In seeking to understand the translational practices that assist in the production and institutionalization of knowledge today, we ask: what transpires in the Filipinization of an account? In which way is translation significant to indigenization …

The World, The Text, And S. P. Lopez, Rafael A. Acuña
Kritika Kultura
The paper studies Salvador P. Lopez’s position as a secular critic by analyzing his milieu during the Commonwealth period, criticism of his collection Literature and Society, and the content of essays from the same collection in light of the debate between “art for art’s sake” and proletarian literature. The theoretical framework used is Edward Said’s secular criticism.

Jose Garcia Villa: Vicissitudes Of Necolonial Art-Fetsishism And The "Beautiful Soul" Of The Filipino Exile, E. San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
The publication of Jose Garcia-Villa’s Doveglion: Collected Poems by Penguin Books in 2008 is remarkable not because it reveals a renewed interest in Villa’s work (as Luis Francia claims in the introduction of the book) but because it presents the nostalgic posthumous return of the repressed. Francia, a Villa critic, fails to situate the poet in the context of the Philippines’ neocolonial status. Francia’s mapping of Villa’s trajectory as a poet is teleological; it elides those historical contexts that allowed US imperialist power to dominate the Philippine political economy in certain periods. Timothy Yu, a Chinese-American Stanford scholar, contends that …
