The Psychological And Physical Impact Of The Opioid Crisis On Families, Adrienne Antoinette Hunter Wells Green
The Psychological And Physical Impact Of The Opioid Crisis On Families, Adrienne Antoinette Hunter Wells Green
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many rural areas in the United States have experienced an opioid crisis. Social support programs could be created to address social support for the families affected by opioid addiction. The purpose of this non-experimental, cross-sectional research study was to examine the possible relationship between (a) prescription or non-prescription addiction; (b) opioid addiction or another addiction; (c) the amount of family social support of a family member who has ongoing interactions with the individual struggling with addiction; and (d) stress of the family member in a rural area. Bowen’s family systems theory provided the theoretical framework for the study. A non-probability …

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) signaling through its cognate receptors, CRHR1 and CRHR2, contributes to diverse stress-related functions in the mammalian brain. Whereas CRHR2 is predominantly expressed in choroid plexus and blood vessels, CRHR1 is abundantly expressed in neurons in discrete brain regions, including the neocortex, hippocampus and nucleus accumbens. Activation of CRHR1 influences motivated behaviors, emotional states, and learning and memory. However, it is unknown whether alterations in CRHR1 signaling contribute to aberrant motivated behaviors observed, for example, in stressful contexts. These questions require tools to manipulate CRHR1 selectively. Here we describe and validate a novel Crhr1-FlpO mouse. Using bacterial artificial …

Mesophotic ecosystems (approx. 30-150 m) represent a significant proportion of the world's oceans yet have long remained understudied due to challenges in accessing these deeper depths. Owing to advances in underwater technologies and a growing scientific and management interest, there has been a major expansion in research of both (sub)tropical mesophotic coral ecosystems and temperate mesophotic ecosystems. Here, we characterize the recent global trends in mesophotic research through an updated release of the 'mesophotic.org' database (www.mesophotic.org) where we reviewed and catalogued 1500 scientific publications. In doing so, we shed light on four major research biases: a gross imbalance in (a) …

Considering The Impact Of Ai On The Professional Status Of Teaching, Benjamin D. Parker
Considering The Impact Of Ai On The Professional Status Of Teaching, Benjamin D. Parker
Educational Studies
The purpose of this perspective essay is not to dissect the merits or deficits of AI in practice in classrooms, nor is it intended to approach the topic from a technical standpoint. Rather, this manuscript begins from a place of acceptance, recognizing that AI in education is already here and the adaptive and evolutionary nature of the technology positions it to maintain a presence in schooling spaces for the foreseeable future. From there, assuming AI will become further integrated into the fabric of schooling experiences, it seems necessary to take a step back and look holistically at the potential impact …
Social Learning And Cultural Enrichment For Fish Welfare, Chiawen Chiang, Becca Franks
Social Learning And Cultural Enrichment For Fish Welfare, Chiawen Chiang, Becca Franks
Animal Sentience
This commentary examines how understanding animal culture—shared behaviors and knowledge transmitted through social learning—plays a role in advancing welfare practices for captive fishes. Despite extensive evidence of fishes' complex sociocultural capacities, their psycho-social needs remain underestimated and unmet in zoos and aquaria. We explore what considering fish culture might mean for welfare practices: diverse social learning opportunities, cultural development, and thoughtful group management. More knowledge about wild fishes' lives will help bridge the gap between their full, complex lives and current captive welfare practices.

Beyond The Surface: Understanding Temperature Polarisation In Dcmd Membranes Through Varied Operational Parameters, Hiras Ahamed Hijaz, Masoumeh Zargar, Abdellah Shafieian, Amir Razmjou, Mehdi Khiadani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Conventionally, a single Temperature Polarisation Coefficient (TPC) value is calculated to quantify Temperature Polarisation (TP). In this research, the extent of polarisation is investigated by capturing temperature profiles at specific points along a MD membrane using miniature thermocouples, eliminating the need for TPC calculations. The extent of polarisation at a point is affected by two contributory factors, namely the proximity of flow inlets and the difference in vapour pressure across the membrane at that point. Under this direction, this work examined the influence of permeate temperature, feed salinity, and flow direction on the development of the temperature profiles. Our analysis …
Schedulability Analysis Of Multi-Phase Limited-Preemption Tasks, Benjamin Standaert
Schedulability Analysis Of Multi-Phase Limited-Preemption Tasks, Benjamin Standaert
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
This work addresses hard real-time systems, in which tasks must be scheduled so that they are guaranteed to meet deadlines. In particular, when tasks execute across multiple domains with high preemption costs, the combined cost of these preemptions can cause the system to become unschedulable. The number of preemptions must therefore be bounded to limit the overall task execution time, while ensuring that task blocking times are small enough to allow the system to be schedulable. Prior work introduces the Multi-Phase Secure model, which describes a more exact version of this scenario, and an algorithm to determine schedulability of sporadic …
Codifying Domesticity: The Story Of The Recommended Minimum Requirements For Small Dwelling Construction Of 1923, The Housing Policy Of The Hoover Secretariat, And The Impact On American Residential Architecture, Noah Morris
Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design Theses & Dissertations
During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, fire disasters and health-safety issues led to the widespread adoption of building codes. While the National Board of Fire Underwriters published the National Building Code in 1905, the code did not maintain regulatory consistency across the nation. This lack of consistency across the nation and socio-economic factors contributed to a nation-wide housing shortage of a million units by 1919. During World War I, the government addressed the housing crisis through the United States Housing Corporation and Emergency Fleet Corporation, building public housing based on the ideals of the Garden City Movement.[1] Following the …

Brazilian Instrumental Music, U.S. Jazz, And Transnationalism: A Study Of National Identity In The Twentieth Century And Present, Felipe Guz Tinoco
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation considers the relationship between Brazilian instrumental music, U.S. jazz, and Brazilian national identity from the early twentieth century to the present. Though the time frame is broad, the present work uses nationalism as an anchoring point through which I analyze multiple musical genres. Previous works have primarily examined songs and lyrics, particularly during the military dictatorship (1964-85), when words against the regime were censored and songwriters persecuted. However, listeners and musicians of instrumental music also engaged with discourses of national identity in profound terms before, during, and after this period, posing ideals of Brasilidade against cultural productions abroad, …

Snowpacks are changing in northeastern North America as the regional climate warms, yet the relative influence of changes in precipitation compared to changes in ablation on snowpacks is poorly understood. We use 56 years of weekly snow water equivalent (SWE) measurements from three locations within a study site which vary in elevation and aspect, paired with adjacent daily climate measurements, to investigate relationships between climate and snowpack onset, maximum, and disappearance. Maximum snowpack size and snowpack duration are shrinking at all sites, at rates ranging from 4.3 days/decade at the coldest site to 9.6 days/decade at the warmest site. The …

Corticothalamic projections to sensorimotor thalamic nuclei show modest firing rates and serve to modulate the activity of thalamic relay neurons. By contrast, here we find that high-order corticothalamic projections from the prelimbic (PL) cortex to the anterior paraventricular thalamic nucleus (aPVT) maintain high-frequency activity and evoke strong synaptic excitation of aPVT neurons in rats. In a significant fraction of aPVT cells, such high-frequency excitation of PL-aPVT projections leads to a rapid decay of action potential amplitudes, followed by a depolarization block (DB) that strongly limits aPVT maximum firing rates, thereby regulating both defensive and appetitive behaviors in a frequency-dependent manner. …

Historically, CLL prognostication relied on disease burden, reflected in clinical stage. Later, chromosome abnormalities and genomics suggested several CLL subtypes which were aligned with response to therapy. Gene expression profiling data identified pathways associated with CLL progression. We hypothesized that transcriptome and proteome may identify functional omics associated with CLL nosology. As a test cohort, we utilized publicly available treatment-naïve CLL transcriptomics data (n = 130) and did consensus clustering that identified BTK-expression-based clusters. The BTK-High and BTK-Low clusters were validated in public and our in-house databases (n = >550 CLL patients). To associate with functional relevance, we took samples …
