The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – State Of Utah: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen
The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – State Of Utah: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Organizations thrive more abundantly when both men and women hold leadership roles and work together. Gender inclusivity in leadership benefits not only Utah’s businesses but also its government organizations, such as state legislatures, city councils, and state and local bureaucracies.1
American democracy is based on the concept of representation.2 Governments mirror this idea by encouraging agencies to employ a workforce that shares the demographic characteristics of the community it serves.3 In fact, the presence of a diverse public workforce “implies equal access to government positions promoting empowerment and connection with government in diverse communities, [and] can also …

Korean Newspapers And The “Irish Problem”: Japanese Censorship In Colonial Korea, 1920-1930, Jaehyun Kim
Student Work
Jaehyun Kim’s thesis, “Korean Newspapers and the ‘Irish Problem’: Japanese Censorship in Colonial Korea, 1920-1930,” touches upon a subject that scholars of colonial Korea have given insufficient attention to. Kim asks why there featured so many colonial Korean run newspaper articles on the Irish Independent movement in the 1920s and 1930s when the Japanese colonial government actively censored Korean newspapers. Indeed, in the wake of the March First Independent Movement, the colonial authorities shifted its harsh military rule to a more conciliatory cultural policy, allowing Koreans to vent their nationalistic sentiments within the confines of state control. However, the level …

Mutual Recognition Of Qualifications, Health Workforce Migration, And Graduate Outcomes: A Comparative Mapping Study Of Undergraduate Dental Education In Europe, Marie Bryce, Sally Hanks, Lorna Burns, Daniel Zahra, Tom Gale
Peninsula Dental School
BackgroundThe resource needs of health services are served by the recognition of qualifications across borders which allows professionals to migrate between countries. The movement of dentists across the European Union (EU), especially into the United Kingdom (UK), has provided a valuable boost to workforce supply. Recent changes to policy recognising overseas qualifications have brought attention to the equivalence of qualifications awarded in EU countries. Professional regulators need to be confident that dentists who qualified elsewhere have the appropriate knowledge, skills and experience to practise safely and effectively. The aim of this study was to compare UK and EU dental curricula, …

"Extraordinary" Times Call For "Compelling" Measures: Reforming The First Step Act's Compassionate Release Mechanism For Noncitizen Detainees, Laura Jimenez Garcia
"Extraordinary" Times Call For "Compelling" Measures: Reforming The First Step Act's Compassionate Release Mechanism For Noncitizen Detainees, Laura Jimenez Garcia
Georgia Law Review
Year after year, America’s carceral state reaches new and more concerning heights. In this era of mass incarceration and criminalization of immigration status, imprisonment costs have skyrocketed, and the quality of life in prisons has plummeted. In response, Congress passed the First Step Act in 2018, which reformed federal sentencing practices. The First Step Act allows federal criminal defendants to request compassionate release, either for several enumerated reasons or for “extraordinary and compelling” circumstances. In the Federal Sentencing Commission’s new Sentencing Guidelines, federal courts have the discretion to define what circumstances fit under the catch-all provision defining “extraordinary and compelling” …
Are Women The Silver Bullet? Understanding Women’S Perceptions Of Gun Reform And Red Flag Laws In The United States, Emmeline Farwell
Are Women The Silver Bullet? Understanding Women’S Perceptions Of Gun Reform And Red Flag Laws In The United States, Emmeline Farwell
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis examines women’s perceptions of gun reform policies and how they can be used as a measure to predict how women could potentially view specific gun reform policies like red flag laws. Specific policies like the assault weapons ban and red flag laws are becoming increasingly common, practical measures to reduce gun violence, but little academic research has been done on them. Using data from the 2022 Congressional Election Survey conducted by the University of Texas at Austin University, I use several linear regressions to ascertain how one’s gender affects feelings or support for gun reform generally and for …

Study Of Factors Influencing Traffic Violations In Jakarta: Perspective Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior (Tpb) In The Implementation Of Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (Etle), Khobat Dewa Ruci, Sutanto Soehodho, R. Jachrizal Sumabrata
Smart City
Transportation safety in Indonesia reflects its culture and modernity, but the high rate of traffic accidents indicates significant challenges. Data from IRSMS and Polda Metro Jaya reveal an increase in accidents and traffic violations, reinforcing the need for effective law enforcement. The implementation of ETLE, supported by Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation and Law No. 19 of 2016 on Electronic Information and Transactions, is a strategic effort to improve law enforcement. However, its effectiveness in Jakarta context still requires in-depth evaluation. This thesis focuses on the psychological factors in the use of ETLE using the …

Connected Palo Alto: Proposed Cycle Track For Enhanced Connectivity Between The San Antonio Corridor And Greater Palo Alto, Ca, Scott C. Richards
City and Regional Planning
The City of Palo Alto is located within Santa Clara County, in the heart of Silicon Valley. Palo Alto borders the city of Mountain View, the city of Los Altos, and the campus of Stanford University. Palo Alto is considered to be one of the most bike-able cities in California and is a Gold-Level Bicycle Friendly City which was designated by the League of American Bicyclists (https://www.cityofpaloalto.org/Departments/Transportation/Bicycling-Walking#:~:text=The%20City%20of%20Palo%20Alto,the%20League%20of%20American%20Bicyclists.). Age Restrictions And The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, 1791–1868, Megan Walsh, Saul Cornell
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The disproportional misuse of firearms by eighteen-to-twenty-year-olds has long been a problem in America. The concerns are not novel. Nor are legislative responses to this problem a recent development in American law. These limitations are deeply rooted in American legal history. While minimum age gun laws routinely survived constitutional challenges before the Supreme Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen, the majority of courts applying Bruen have struck down firearms restrictions based on age. Bruen fundamentally altered the way courts evaluate the constitutionality of firearms regulations, requiring them to judge modern gun laws based on …
The Second Amendment’S Racial Justice Complexities, Daniel S. Harawa
The Second Amendment’S Racial Justice Complexities, Daniel S. Harawa
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
The relationship between the Second Amendment and racial justice is complicated. That's because the relationship between penal administration and racial justice is complicated. The briefing in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen perfectly proves this point. A group of public defenders favored striking down New York's concealed carry licensing law to further racial justice, while a group of civil rights organizations argued that the law should be upheld to further racial justice. What the briefing revealed is that Black people have an interest in being free from racially disparate policing and prosecution of all criminal laws, including …

An Abiding Commitment To The Death Penalty? Centrality Of The Rule Of Law In The Administration Of Capital Punishment In Singapore, Eugene K. B. Tan
An Abiding Commitment To The Death Penalty? Centrality Of The Rule Of Law In The Administration Of Capital Punishment In Singapore, Eugene K. B. Tan
Singapore Law Journal (Lexicon)
Capital punishment remains in use in Singapore. The Singapore government’s position is that the death penalty works in deterring the most serious crimes. Public trust and confidence remains healthy that the death penalty regime in Singapore has the requisite deterrent effect on criminals and has sufficient safeguards to prevent any miscarriage of justice. In 2012, the Singapore Parliament made significant amendments to the Penal Code and the Misuse of Drugs Act, marking a shift from the longstanding mandatory to a discretionary death penalty system for some of the most serious crimes. It demonstrates the authorities’ belief that the mandatory death …

Reconceiving Corporate Rights And Regulation In The Ai Era, Michael R. Siebecker
Reconceiving Corporate Rights And Regulation In The Ai Era, Michael R. Siebecker
Missouri Law Review
Can existing corporate governance principles properly guide the relationship between shareholders and directors as artificial intelligence (“AI”) plays an increasingly prominent role in corporate management, planning, and operations? Without a doubt, AI technologies allow corporations to enjoy enhanced efficiency and innovation. But the vast range of AI capabilities—from sophisticated data analytics to autonomous decision-making—raises profound questions about whether traditional governance principles remain sufficiently robust to cabin the proper development and deployment of such a powerful and rapidly evolving set of new technologies. Current corporate governance structures that focus on human actors and traditional business decision-making mechanisms seem ill-suited to address …
From Lightbulbs To #Sheinhauls: Considerations For Planned Obsolescence Regulation In The Modern Era, Nicole Cullen
From Lightbulbs To #Sheinhauls: Considerations For Planned Obsolescence Regulation In The Modern Era, Nicole Cullen
Washington Law Review
“Planned obsolescence,” broadly defined as conduct by manufacturers to shorten product lifespans and spur consumption, is characteristic of the American economy. Such conduct largely manifests in widely accepted competitive strategies that require consumer participation: The periodic release of products or emergence of a trend, for example. In some instances, planned obsolescence conduct reaches beyond the accepted competitive practices, desired by consumers, to conduct that clearly harms consumers with no countervailing rationale. Such practices effectively cease product function prematurely, either through product failure or poor performance and inefficient repair costs. While this conduct largely evades legal capture, it intersects with many …

Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Usage Of Hearing Protection In Volunteer Firefighters, Rachel S. Combs
Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Usage Of Hearing Protection In Volunteer Firefighters, Rachel S. Combs
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Background: Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) represents a substantial global public health concern. Regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH) aim to establish noise exposure limits in occupational settings, yet certain professions, such as firefighting, remain at a heightened risk. Although research has been conducted on noise exposure and hearing protection in career firefighters, a lack of research exists on volunteer firefighters. The purpose of this study was to 1) establish the extent that volunteer firefighters are currently educated on hearing conservation and hearing protection 2) …
