Applying The Principles Of Periodisation To Supplementary Training For Dance To Reduce Risks Of Overtraining, Sophie Molony
Applying The Principles Of Periodisation To Supplementary Training For Dance To Reduce Risks Of Overtraining, Sophie Molony
Theses : Honours
This research investigated the necessity of individualised training adaptations in dance, informed by physiological and psychological factors to nurture dancer physical and emotional wellbeing. Periodisation is a well known framework used, by professional athletes, as a way of dividing the training plan into smaller training cycles to develop skills and biomotor abilities to allow the athlete to perform optimally (physically, technically and mentally) and ensure peak performance at a specific time (Wyon & Allard, 2023). However, it is not yet well studied and implemented in dance (Wyon, 2010). Preparing the dancer with a periodisation model could potentially assist in supporting …

Competency-Based Training Within The Prison System: Enhancing The Likelihood Of Entrepreneurial Activity Upon Release, Martina Brophy, Ana Pérez-Luño, Thomas M. Cooney
Articles
Recidivism rates across the world remain high, and one of the key reasons for this situation is that people leaving the prison system have great difficulty in securing employment. Addressing this issue must be explored from a broad perspective, but one potential career option that is under-explored is self-employment, with few entrepreneurship programmes available within prison systems. This study explores a competency-based approach to training, examining the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to enhance the prospects of persons with lived experience of prison becoming entrepreneurs. Using thematic analysis on ten in-depth interviews, this article identifies three categories of competency (generic, specific, …

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a widespread chronic pain condition with prevalence increasing in older adults. Older adults living with FM experience longer pain symptom durations that can negatively impact their quality of life. Affect and neuroinflammation are potential factors that can exacerbate pain symptoms. Exercise is a recommended intervention to manage pain symptoms; however, adherence limitations persist. Drawing on the Biopsychosocial Framework of Chronic Pain, this scoping review explores how exercise impacts factors related to neuroinflammation and affect, and how these factors contribute to exercise adherence in older adults living with FM.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping search of articles …

Taking Environmental Responsibility Seriously: Academic Libraries, Ai, And Climate Impacts, Frank Houghton, Jennifer Moran Stritch, Lisa O'Rourke Scott
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Generative AI is a disruptive technology that offers significant potential across many fields including healthcare, health education and academic libraries. However, although many concerns are routinely cited in relation to AI, very few of these address the issue of the increased power requirements inherent in AI training and inference. Climate change resulting from human factors has already resulted in increased global warming and climate variability. In this Anthropocene era the question must be asked how libraries and other organisations will mitigate the impacts of their increased AI use? To date assessments of sustainability and energy use in libraries have not …
Target Selection And Enhancement During Attentional Tracking, Marvin R. Maechler
Target Selection And Enhancement During Attentional Tracking, Marvin R. Maechler
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
At any waking moment, we are bombarded with more sensory information than we can fully process. Attention is necessary to deal with the dynamic world we live in. One fundamental function of vision and attention is to keep track of moving objects, but what are the targets of attention during tracking?
One of the first theories of attentional tracking predicted that targets would be selected at early processing stages. By employing the double-drift illusion, which dissociates physical and perceived positions of moving objects, we investigated which of these positions is selected for tracking. Contrary to earlier theories and in line …

Law enforcement officers commonly must respond to situations in which a person is experiencing acute symptoms of a mental illness. Yet from the first moment of police involvement, these community members face the possibility of negative outcomes. Consequences include officers' use of excessive force leading to injury or death, criminal arrest and prosecution that results in deprivation of liberty, separation from the community, and the creation of a permanent criminal record that affects other rights.
Although potential violence and criminalization are important reasons to avoid relying on police during mental health events, another key consideration is often ignored in the …

The Cost Of Justice At The Dawn Of Ai, Michael B. Abramowicz
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Justice isn’t free, but it might soon get much less expensive. Policies concerning issues such as arbitration, class actions, and plea bargaining depend on how much legal services cost, but the legal literature has generally ignored past and future cost trends and their implications. The result is a legal system that may change dramatically because of economic forces without active consideration of potential responses. Part of the reason for the lack of attention is that changes in legal productivity can be difficult to measure or forecast. Some commentators have concluded that the legal sector has become more expensive in recent …

While Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs) have improved the health and well-being of the people they serve, most healthcare institutions will only invest in an MLP if they are convinced that doing so will improve its balance sheet. This article offers a detailed estimation of the cost savings that an MLP targeted toward the most acute legal needs would accrue to an academic medical center (AMC) in North Carolina.

When Kentucky and Arkansas instituted work requirements in 2018 as a condition to receiving Medicaid benefits, residents from both states sued the Trump Administration to block the program, arguing that the requirements were contrary to the Medicaid statute. In Gresham v. Azar, the DC Circuit agreed, holding that "the objective of Medicaid was to furnish medical assistance." Even though the Secretary of Health and Human Services determined that the work requirements were "likely to assist in improving health outcomes," the court concluded that "better health outcomes as [an] objective of Medicaid… lacks textual support. Indeed, the statute makes no mention …

“He totally denies it . . . he says it didn’t happen.” With that, former President Donald Trump dismissed all allegations against then-Senate candidate Judge Roy Moore for sexual misconduct with minors. While in office and since then, Trump has repeatedly displayed the power of denial in the face of allegations of wrongdoing toward women. Trump is largely right that denial works. He is not alone in considering an accused’s denial as the end of the story, even in the face of strong contradictory evidence. In doing so, Trump merely echoes a dominant attitude in the United States. Our culture …

Objective: Although life stress and adversity have emerged as risk factors for mental health problems and cognitive impairment among older adults, prior studies on this topic have been cross-sectional and based on relatively homogeneous samples. To address these issues, we examined prospective associations between lifetime adversity and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment in a nationally representative, longitudinal sample of older adults in the U.S. Method: We analyzed data from the Health and Retirement Study (1992-2016). The sample included 3,496 individuals (59.9% female), aged ≥64 years old (M age=76.0 ±7.6 years). We used the individual-level panel data and ordinary …

The United Kingdom’s (UK) goal of a 20% increase in participation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups in higher education (HE) by 2020 has not been met. Pakistani and Bangladeshi students are some of the most underrepresented BAME groups in UK HE institutions. This systematic review included 20 papers that identified barriers and facilitators towards participation in HE separately for Pakistani and Bangladeshi students in the UK. Using thematic analysis, two overarching themes were constructed: (i) the interplay of culturally expected roles on HE participation and (ii) belief that HE is vital for success. This review identified the …

Given its endless benefits, breastfeeding is widely acknowledged as the optimal choice for both maternal and infant health. Nevertheless, breastfeeding mothers often encounter various challenges that may hinder their ability to fully embrace this experience. This report delves into a compelling case of Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER), a largely underexamined mental health issue among lactating mothers. D-MER is characterized by intense aversion right before milk let down, which can significantly impede a mother’s willingness to breastfeed. The primary aim of this case report is to provide a comprehensive psychological understanding of D-MER, emphasizing aspects of attachment, the transition into …

Exclusion Disguised As Access: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Postsecondary Disability Service Websites, Lavonne Ciezadlo Kopca
Theses and Dissertations
College students with disabilities are an overlooked minority population. However, they comprise an ever-increasing student population in postsecondary institutions. Yet students with disabilities do not persist or graduate at rates similar to their able-bodied peers. People with disabilities have historically been viewed as a low-status group and have been excluded from various social, educational, and economic benefits of citizenship. This study used a critical theoretical lens of social dominance theory to explore ways that higher education may be complicit in perpetuating discrimination and inequities through policies or discourse found in the content of student disability and diversity office websites. [Summary] The relationship between emotions and job satisfaction is widely acknowledged via affective events theory (AET). Despite its widespread use, AET was not designed to address why specific emotions might differentially relate to job satisfaction. We utilize appraisal theory of emotion to refine AET and provide this nuanced theorizing. We meta‐analytically test our ideas with 235 samples across 99 883 individuals and 22 600 intra‐individual episodes. We test two approaches—specific emotion experiences (16 discrete emotions) versus general emotion experiences (positive or negative emotions)—and present empirical evidence of their similarities and differences with job satisfaction. Our findings suggest that specific emotions …
