Realizing The Sustainability Of Portfolio Assessment In Second-Language Writing, Pauline Mak, Kevin M. Wong
Realizing The Sustainability Of Portfolio Assessment In Second-Language Writing, Pauline Mak, Kevin M. Wong
Education Division Scholarship
Portfolio assessment, as an alternative writing assessment approach, has received growing attention in the past few decades. Although the benefits of portfolio assessment are well validated, there is a dearth of empirical research on how portfolio assessment can be sustained over time and the support teachers need to sustain portfolio assessment practice in their teaching contexts. To fill this significant void, the present study examines the influences that contribute to the sustainability of portfolio assessment in second-language writing. Drawing on data from interviews with the principal, English department chair and four English teachers from one elementary school in Hong Kong, …

Best Practices For Recruitment And Retention Of Transportation Professionals, Chris Van Dyke, Bryan Gibson, Sarah Mccormack, Merl Hackbart, Doug Kreis
Best Practices For Recruitment And Retention Of Transportation Professionals, Chris Van Dyke, Bryan Gibson, Sarah Mccormack, Merl Hackbart, Doug Kreis
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
Many public sector agencies, including state departments of transportation (DOTs), have long found recruiting and retaining staff a daunting challenge. Lured by the promise of higher salaries in the private sector, many people are reluctant to sacrifice their long-term earnings potential to pursue public service. And with the quality of fringe benefits (e.g., retirement plans, health insurance) offered by public agencies having declined gradually, it is even more difficult to persuade prospective employees to accept a lower salary. Many studies over the past 15—20 years have looked at methods for solving the problem of recruitment and retention within the context …

An Examination Of The Effect Of Management Consultant Engagements On Public Sentiment, Brian S. Archibald
Executive DBA Dissertations
The management consulting industry is critical in shaping corporate strategy in the U.S. However, academic research on the market signals generated by a firm's use of such consultants is scant. This paper investigates the relationship between public sentiment and the utilization of management or strategy consultants. It leverages agency and signaling theories to decode the information conveyed to the market through such engagements/ The research contrasts a fresh dataset comprising 190 publicly traded U.S. firms that reveal their consultant usage with an extensive control group, leveraging three public data sources, including Refinitiv's MarketPsych Analytics database, spanning the years 2000 to …
A Design Thinking Mixed-Methods Study On Deliberate Practice And Building Collective Efficacy For Teachers In The Midwestern United States, Brian Elder
Dissertations
Educational research identified teacher efficacy as a primary driver for student learning and building a positive school culture (Hattie, 2018). However, understanding how to build and support the self and collective efficacy of teachers remained unclear and an elusive process for in-service teachers. The following research study used a design thinking mixed-methods study to explore how professional development rooted in a criteria of deliberate practice worked to build professional capacity of teachers and increase teacher efficacy (Ericsson, 2020). The research project initially began embedded at an independent school in a Midwestern city before expanding to include 15 in-service teachers representing …
Exploring Divestitures: Studies On Motivation Factors And Tools, Yun Qiao
Exploring Divestitures: Studies On Motivation Factors And Tools, Yun Qiao
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This paper explores the phenomenon of 'big company disease' commonly experienced by large companies as they expand. In Western markets, companies are more inclined to respond to the financial market by undergoing divestitures to address this issue. Divestitures simplify the company's structure, making it easier for investors to understand its value. Consequently, this facilitates companies in acquiring more capital resources and provides strong incentives for management. However, in emerging markets, divestitures are less likely due to a less developed financial market and the advantages associated with maintaining a large size and control.
The first study focuses on how listed companies …
The Impact Of Resilience On A Middle Manager’S Resistance To Organizational Change, April D. Hall
The Impact Of Resilience On A Middle Manager’S Resistance To Organizational Change, April D. Hall
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Change is never ending in organizations, as it is necessary to maintain a competitive advantage. Although change is needed, research shows most change implementations do not succeed.
Middle managers (MMs) are considered the main facilitators of change. They receive directive for change and are tasked with not only processing and accepting the change but also communicating the directive down into the ranks and executing upon it. This basic qualitative study explored how resilience can aid an MM when implementing change, where resistance is present. The conceptual framework for this study included Lewin’s (1947) three-stage model of change theory and the …
Which Police Departments Make Black Lives Matter?, Robert Maranto, Wilfred Reilly, Patrick J. Wolf
Which Police Departments Make Black Lives Matter?, Robert Maranto, Wilfred Reilly, Patrick J. Wolf
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
Black Lives Matter (BLM) has gained support across racial lines and considerable financial backing. Yet it is unclear whether social science has responded with research likely to save Black lives. To encourage more applied research and related public discussion, we rank police departments in the 50 largest U.S. cities by their effectiveness in keeping homicides low and not taking civilian lives, while adjusting for poverty, which makes policing more difficult. We find enormous variation in police performance and offer qualitative evidence that this reflects organizational practices. We conclude with ideas for reform.

Unpacking Qalb Behavioral Traits Through The Lens Of Maqasid Al-Shariah: A Pathway To Foster Inclusive Entrepreneurial Intentions In The Muslim Community, Mhd Louai Sarhan, Kamarulzaman Ab Aziz
International Journal of Management, Finance and Accounting
In Malaysia, a worrisome trend is emerging as an increasing number of individuals find themselves trapped within the poverty bracket and the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) socioeconomic groups. To address the economic and social challenges faced by these marginalized communities and to contribute significantly to poverty reduction and overall well-being, inclusive entrepreneurship has emerged as a pivotal strategy. This study delves into the critical imperative of inclusive entrepreneurship, which often eludes existing quantitative measurements of societal well-being. These measurements frequently overlook the fundamental dimensions of social and psychological well-being inherent to inclusive entrepreneurship. Drawing from the Islamic framework of …

A Mixed Methods Study To Evaluate The Nature Of The Lead Pastor's Psychological Capital And The Impact On Leading Church Revitalization, Toney Allen Cox
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
In response to the substantial amount of church revitalization that is necessary to cause a noteworthy decrease in the 70 percent of churches in America that are declining or plateauing (Rainer, 2019, para. 4), lead pastors carry a biblical responsibility to lead churches into growth and spiritual health (Jamieson, 2011, para. 15-16). While church planting is a respectable portion of the macro solution, revitalizing declining or plateaued existing churches is an equally significant part of the solvent. However, a substantial majority of revitalization literature and education focuses on the practical methodology of implementing church renewal and emphasizing the lead pastor’s …

The present study sought to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the personal and professional lives of social workers practicing in North Carolina and to determine how …
Reimagining The Criminal Justice Response To Sexual Assault, Jacob Swanson
Reimagining The Criminal Justice Response To Sexual Assault, Jacob Swanson
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
After a crime is reported, several different stakeholders work to take the case from a police report to a conviction. In sexual assault cases, these stakeholders may consist of police officers, medical professionals, advocates, forensic scientists, prosecutors, and others. Yet, this process cannot begin until a victim reports their crime to law enforcement. Sexual assault cases are widely underreported and for a variety of reasons. Data from the 2015-2019 National Crime Victimization Survey suggests that only about one-third of sexual assaults are reported to police, while only about 3% lead to a felony conviction (RAINN, n.d.).
The criminal justice community …
Nurse Relationships, Techniques, And Turnover With Female Nurses In Nigeria, Judith Obirieze Oparaocha
Nurse Relationships, Techniques, And Turnover With Female Nurses In Nigeria, Judith Obirieze Oparaocha
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nurse understaffing relates to reduced quality and safety of care in the healthcare sector, which substantially risks the nation's future health. With issues such as faculty shortage, burnout, increased workload, retirement, and increased turnover, the nursing sector has been unable to sustainably have adequate staffing to satisfy patients' needs. Nurse leaders, directly and indirectly, influence the rate of nurse retention and turnover mainly by affecting the work environment, workload, and staff motivation. Based on the leader-member exchange model, this research stipulates that an amicable and supportive relationship between leaders and followers promotes staff retention and increased productivity. The study aims …

Leadership Strategies To Increase Department Store Employees' Morale, Stephanie L. Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Department store leaders who lack effective strategies to increase employee morale face an organizational decrease in productivity, thus increasing absenteeism and turnover rates, which could cost an organization billions of dollars. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to explore leadership strategies department store managers use to increase employee morale and improve productivity in their organizations. The participants were seven department store leaders who minimized low employee morale. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and a review of public company documents. Through thematic analysis, three themes were identified: (a) effective communication, (b) …

Open Strategy For Social Impact: An Action Research Study Of A Multistakeholder Open Strategy Planning Process, Jo Pang
Dissertations
As social and environmental challenges become increasingly dire, organizations are focusing on creating positive social impacts beyond generating profits. Traditional strategic planning tools were originally created for the purposes of profit maximization and are not sufficient for organizations with the aim of addressing complex social issues. Open strategy offers a promising alternative by increasing multistakeholder involvement in the formulation of organizational strategy. Existing research has supported the idea that multistakeholder collaboration is an effective means for creating positive social impact since societal challenges are too complex for any one organization to sufficiently address. Despite these promises, there are risks and …
