Plant growth and food security depend heavily on phosphorus (P). Recovering and recycling P from animal, municipal, and food waste streams can significantly reduce dependency on traditional mineral P. This is particularly pertinent in the EU regions with limited native P supplies. The agronomic performance of including P-based recycling-derived fertilisers (two struvite and two ashes) or cattle slurry was compared to a conventional mineral P fertilisation programme along with no P and no fertiliser controls over three years. A field-scale experiment was set up to evaluate the perennial ryegrass dry matter yield (DMY), P uptake, and soil test P effects. …

Background

Struvite, biochar and ash products (collectively known as STRUBIAS) derived from different waste streams are used as fertilisers in agriculture. Raw dairy processing sludge (DPS) shows promise as bio-based fertilisers, but secondary STRUBIAS-derived products need further testing as fertilisers.

Aims

The objective of this study was to calculate the phosphorus mineral fertiliser equivalency (P-MFE) for some STRUBIAS products derived from DPS.

Methods

Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum) pot trials were used to determine the P-MFE using the apparent P recovery (APR) method for Fe-DPS and DPS-derived struvites (Struvite 1–4), hydrochars (HC1–3) and …

Evaluating Functional Inhibitors Of Acid Sphingomyelinase As Potential Negative Modulators Of Microvesicle Particle Release In Response To Skin Stressors, Taskin Sabit Jan 2024

Evaluating Functional Inhibitors Of Acid Sphingomyelinase As Potential Negative Modulators Of Microvesicle Particle Release In Response To Skin Stressors, Taskin Sabit

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Many diseases including lupus erythematosus, atopic eczema, and rosacea can be associated with photosensitivity, which is an abnormal response to sunlight. Recent studies by our group have implicated microvesicle particles (MVP) as playing an important role in causing inflammation and systemic immunosuppression. Previous studies show that functional inhibitors of acid sphingomyelinase (FIASMA) can block MVP release in response to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation or Platelet-activating Factor (PAF) agonist, which are skin stressors. However, more research needs to be conducted to evaluate the role of PAF, UVB and FIASMA in MVP generation and to formulate a therapeutic medication to be potentially …

Respecting An Establishment Of Religion: A Look At The Establishment Clause And The Accommodation Approach, Kendal Zylstra Jan 2024

Respecting An Establishment Of Religion: A Look At The Establishment Clause And The Accommodation Approach, Kendal Zylstra

St. Thomas Law Review

An often-litigated portion ofthe First Amendment, conversations surrounding the Establishment Clause remain as vibrant as they were centuries ago. The Establishment Clause restricts the government from establishing a state-sponsored religion, but it goes much further than that. But how far does it go? Some argue that the American people should be free from religion, while others argue the government should neutralize the playing field when it comes to religion in the public sphere. Still others advocate for a more "accommodating" approach that acknowledges that one cannot leave their religion at the door, advocates for the free exercise of religion, and …

The Role Of Ferroptosis In Cholangiocarcinoma, Apiwit Sae-Fung

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive malignancy of the bile ducts, characterized by a poor prognosis and high mortality rate. Despite advancements in treatment, effective targeted therapies and reliable prognostic biomarkers remain limited. Ferroptosis, a regulated form of cell death, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target in various cancers. However, its role in CCA remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) to predict the prognosis of CCA and identify potential therapeutic targets. Using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) Cox regression analysis on a training dataset, followed …

The Protective Role Of Melanin Within The Teleost Inner Ear, Gabriel Heckerman Jan 2024

The Protective Role Of Melanin Within The Teleost Inner Ear, Gabriel Heckerman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Melanin is the dark pigment responsible for influencing the color of bodily structures, and it is variably present throughout human and animal tissue. Melanin is also found within the mammalian inner ear, and it has been observed that a lack of melanin is associated with greater susceptibility to sensorineural hearing loss. In this study, melanin levels of the inner ears of different color morphs of the fish species Poecilia latipinna and Cyprinus carpio were measured and the potential protective role of that melanin from acoustical stress was examined. Previous research showed that black morphs of both species exhibited less noise-induced …

Power, Capacity, Disposition And Categorical Properties: A Roughly Aristotelian Proposal, Angus Brook Jan 2024

Power, Capacity, Disposition And Categorical Properties: A Roughly Aristotelian Proposal, Angus Brook

Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles

This paper proposes a roughly Aristotelian account of powers ontology. In doing so, the paper uses the distinction found in Aristotle between four analogous senses of potency to explain causation and the existence-essence distinction in substances. On this basis, the paper offers some justification in support of the claims that powers and dispositions are the truth-makers of categorical properties and that categorical properties are ontologically dependent upon powers and dispositions.

The Factors Causing High Food Insecurity Rates In U.S. Undergraduate Students, Natalie S. Byrd

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

The cliché of a college student surviving off ramen noodles sheds light on a deeper issue — high rates of food insecurity among undergraduate college/university students in the United States. There have been countless studies in recent years exploring the hidden causes of why an estimated 40% of students experience food insecurity as of 2022. These studies conclude three main reoccurring factors causing these high rates: costs, accessibility, and demographic characteristics. Food insecurity rates are important for higher education officials to address due to the countless physical and mental health, academic, and equity implications for the students.

Powdery Mildew And Its Management In Wheat, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia Jan 2024

Powdery Mildew And Its Management In Wheat, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia

Grains and other field crops factsheets

Powdery mildew is a fungal leaf disease that reduces yield and grain quality in susceptible wheat varieties. Disease is both stubble-borne and carried over on green bridge (secondary spread by wind borne spores). It has multiple, fast life cycles in a growing season and can be difficult to control once established. The best approach is an integrated disease management strategy.

With wheat area in Western Australia dominated by susceptible varieties, such as Scepter, powdery mildew remains a concern for growers statewide and has been particularly persistent and damaging in the Esperance Port Zone.

A Comparison Of Domesticated Rat Behavior Between Differing Environment Types, Payton Mitchell Jan 2024

A Comparison Of Domesticated Rat Behavior Between Differing Environment Types, Payton Mitchell

Theses & ETDs

Enriching environments consist of elements that provoke more naturalistic behaviors to appear within a focal species through incorporating novelty typically not provided within laboratory environments. This study set out to compare the behaviors displayed by domesticated rats when provided with two distinct enriching environments. It was hypothesized that there would be differences in the behaviors displayed between the different cages. To test this hypothesis the behaviors of two senior female rats were observed during their time in a standard pet rat cage and a bioactive/naturalistic cage over the course of three periods (control, experimental, and reintroduction), with the standard pet …

Effects Of Exercise On Telomere Biology And Its Implications For Cellular Aging, Liam Parker Carrillo-Rodriguez Jan 2024

Effects Of Exercise On Telomere Biology And Its Implications For Cellular Aging, Liam Parker Carrillo-Rodriguez

Theses & ETDs

Telomeres are regions of repetitive DNA-protein sequences found at chromosomal ends. They play a crucial role in preserving the information in our genome by protecting the ends of chromosomes from fraying or tangling. Each time a cell divides, a small portion of telomeric DNA is lost and telomeres become slightly shorter until the cell can no longer divide properly, and the cell undergoes replicative senescence or apoptotic cell death. Telomere length is associated with a number of age-related diseases, lifespan, and cancer. Different factors that have an effect on telomere length, like oxidative stress and telomerase activity, are reviewed in …

Cultivating Diversity: Investigating The Impact Of Maize-Bean-Squash Intercropping On The Soil Microbiome, Drake Elting Jan 2024

Cultivating Diversity: Investigating The Impact Of Maize-Bean-Squash Intercropping On The Soil Microbiome, Drake Elting

Theses & ETDs

Soil microbes have a direct impact on plant and soil health. The unsustainability of contemporary agricultural practices pose an increasing threat to the food security of human societies, as many of these practices result in the degradation of soil health, upon which future productivity is reliant. A number of studies have affirmed the assertion that organic farming methods such as milpa increase microbial diversity which has been shown to increase nutrient bioavailability and can help the restoration of damaged soil. The present study investigates the comparative bulk soil microbiome between maize, bean, and squash monocultures and maize, bean, and squash …

Third Ventricle Choroid Plexus In Healthy Brains Vs Traumatic Injury Brains: A Comparative Immunohistochemistry Analysis In Mice, Tessa Vincennie

Theses & ETDs

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a significant health issue, and there are a wide variety of efforts taking place to research the neural mechanisms involved in an attempt to find treatments. Importantly, there is a deficit in literature regarding the choroid plexus in how it relates to traumatic brain injuries. Furthermore, more research must be done to compare cellular mechanisms between ventricles effectively. There is no recorded study history of the third ventricle choroid plexus following TBI. Within this thesis, I investigated the differences in the third ventricle’s choroid plexus immunohistological presentation within healthy mice versus the brains of TBI …

Role Of Mct1 In The Progression Metabolism Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Saiyid Ibtehaj Shariq Jan 2024

Role Of Mct1 In The Progression Metabolism Of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Saiyid Ibtehaj Shariq

Theses & ETDs

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) arises from the mucosal surface and is the most common type of head and neck cancer. Despite treatment, it often recurs, leading to high patient mortality. Most OSCC advances from precancerous dysplasia to early invasive cancer, but the process is not fully understood, hindering effective interventions. Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) is a membrane protein that transports L-lactate and pyruvate across the plasma membrane. Because increased MCT1 expression is linked to OSCC progression, we hypothesized that MCT1 promotes progression by supporting metabolic coupling between cancer cells and the surrounding stroma. To test this hypothesis, we knocked …
