The future of the food system on the planet is increasingly facing uncertainties that are attributable to population growth and a surge in demand for nutritious food. Traditional agricultural practices are poised to place strain on production, as well as natural resources and ecosystem services provided, particularly under a changing climate. Given their remarkable attributes, including a low environmental footprint, high food conversion ratio, rapid growth and nutritional values, edible insects can play a vital role in the global food system. Nonetheless, substantial knowledge gaps persist regarding their diversity, global distribution, and shared characteristics across regions, potentially impeding effective scaling …
Evaluation Of Pierce’S Disease-Resistant Grapevine Cultivars In Upstate South Carolina, Annie Bruno
Evaluation Of Pierce’S Disease-Resistant Grapevine Cultivars In Upstate South Carolina, Annie Bruno
All Theses
Interest in wine grape production is increasing in South Carolina, but Pierce’s Disease (PD) caused by the xylem-limited bacteria Xylella fastidiosa (Xf) is a major limiting factor. Xf is spread by sap-sucking insect vectors in the Cicadellidae family such as sharpshooters. In the United States, Xf has become endemic to the southeast as global temperatures rise, causing winter temperatures to increase, which allows the bacteria to survive year-round. However, PD-resistant grapevine hybrid cultivars have become available through breeding V. vinifera genes with native American Vitis species that are resistant to Xf. In this study, the PD-resistant grapevine …

The World Bank's New Approach To Human Capital Model And Education, Ozlem Kucuk, Cihan Cobanoglu
University of South Florida (USF) M3 Publishing
The human capital approach, introduced in 1960, has been used by economists to establish connections between education, skills, and personal income. It resulted in a redistribution of public expenditure by viewing education not only as a cost but also as an economic input, a way to increase revenue in the medium and long term. Human capital theory highlights the crucial role of education in the economy. With the rise of the knowledge society, scientists have debated the potential end of poverty, inequality, and social exclusion. They envisioned a new knowledge economy and a more egalitarian society. The significant increase in …

Soybean Cyst Nematode (Heterodera Glycines Ichinohe) Virulence Assay Against Resistance Sources In Nebraska, Pratibha Karki
Department of Plant Pathology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Soybean cyst nematode (SCN, Heterodera glycines Ichinohe), one of the major yield-limiting pathogens of soybean, is currently found in 60 counties of Nebraska that produce more than 90% of the state’s soybean. Often, yield loss occurs without any above-ground symptoms, which makes it difficult to manage. The primary management option is the use of SCN-resistant varieties. Several soybean plant introductions serve as resistance sources against SCN. Unfortunately, the single source, PI 88788, is used in approximately 90% of resistant varieties and its prolonged use has increased the virulence status of SCN in the U.S. A study was conducted to assess …

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Methanogenesis is known to be one of the oldest forms of energy generation on our planet. Methanogens rely on this method of energy conservation and have evolved to metabolize a variety of substrates, including the waste products of other organisms. This feature has made methanogens beneficial to both wastewater treatment and landfill-to-energy projects. Methane itself is a greenhouse gas twenty times more potent than carbon dioxide, viewed as a particularly influential contributor to global greenhouse emissions. Climate change was known to be on the horizon throughout the 20th century but has made itself known vocally during this 21st …

Featured Application: Research on the endocrine changes from AEL training is limited, especially for long-term effects. This study suggests that combining AEL with CS might offer similar or slightly better results compared to traditional training. However, the practical challenges, such as increased training monotony and strain, may outweigh the minimal benefits. The extra cost, time, and effort required for AEL, especially in large team settings, might not be justified. Additionally, individual differences in optimal loading prescriptions could complicate its use, making traditional methods more efficient. This study investigated the endocrine responses to accentuated eccentric loading (AEL) paired with cluster sets …

Bad Plants, Heather I. Sullivan
Bad Plants, Heather I. Sullivan
Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research
“Bad plants” represent the seemingly unexpected and startling forms of plant power overlooked by many modern, industrialized societies that treat vegetal beings as mere resources instead of animate, world-shaping forces. Since science fiction and fairy tales often explore more openly animistic visions of non-human life, such texts provide ample possibilities for reconsideration by critical plant studies of our human-plant relations both cultural and ecological. For example, both Jack McDevitt’s 2001 science fiction novel, Deepsix, and Ludwig Tieck’s 1799 fairy tale, “Faithful Eckart and Tannhäuser”, feature “bad plants” that bring human beings violently back into the plant cycles they assume they …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Trackable Pathology-Triggered Polymersomes Toward Enzyme Replacement Theranostics For Gm1 Gangliosidosis, Dorian Foster
All Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the development and optimization of pathology-responsive polymersomes for simultaneous enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in the treatment of GM1 gangliosidosis (GM1). While therapeutic strategies exist for similar, non-neuropathic lysosomal storage disorders, implementation towards GM1 faces significant challenges due to the blood-brain barrier.
Herein, we developed and characterized a range of low molecular weight hyaluronic acid-b-polylactic acid (HA-PLA) polymersomes (PSs) capable of encapsulating therapeutic enzymes in their hydrophilic core. These polymersomes exhibit pathophysiology-triggered responsiveness, degrading in the presence of acidic conditions, which is characteristic of lysosomes, and enzymes such as hexosaminidase A, which …
