Engineering An Injectable Hydrogel With Self-Assembling 3d Vasculature, Kendyl Cohn
Master's Theses
This research developed methods for culturing self-assembling capillaries in an injectable gel as a potential method for vascularizing tissue-on-a-chip models to mimic physiological drug delivery. Additionally, a mathematical model was developed as a tool for understanding nutrient delivery and comparison of potential delivery systems. Organs-on-a-chip provide novel platforms for studying biology and physiology in 3D, allow exploration of tissue engineering on a manageable scale, and serve as models for drug screening and drug-delivery testing.
Methods were first developed for co-culture of endothelial cells and fibroblasts (3T3s or HDFs) in 2D, evaluating culture time, seeding density and ratio of HUVECs and …

Healthy Living After Cancer: A Community-Based Program To Improve Exercise And Nutrition In Cancer Survivors, Czarina Banzon
Healthy Living After Cancer: A Community-Based Program To Improve Exercise And Nutrition In Cancer Survivors, Czarina Banzon
OT Student Capstones
Persevering through cancer treatment is an uphill battle, but continuing survivorship for the rest of their lives becomes the biggest challenge for cancer survivors. Concerns in survivorship include side effects from cancer treatment, fear of recurrence, and returning to previous roles and routines. Additionally, survivors must maintain their health and well-being through exercise and nutrition. Occupational therapists possess the necessary skill set to create programming for cancer survivors that is relevant and realistic. They can take side effects from treatment into consideration and offer personalization of goals and maintenance strategies. Furthermore, occupational therapists can offer simple alternatives to maintaining a …

Racial And Gender Bias In Child Maltreatment Reporting Decisions: Results Of A Randomized Vignette Experiment, Ian Ayres, Sonia Qin, Pranjal Drall
UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice
In this randomized vignette experiment, we asked 4,000 respondents through a YouGov survey to decide how likely they would be to report potential instances of child maltreatment to authorities. We used racialized and gendered names to suggest the identities of the parents and children in each of the ten vignettes that were based on real-life events. We find that respondents were less likely to report potential child maltreatment when the vignette used non-white names to describe the family participants. Respondents were less likely to report when a male child was involved, and more likely to report when a male parent …

Educational Barriers For Children In Nepalese Brick Kiln Communities, Eve Burgess
Educational Barriers For Children In Nepalese Brick Kiln Communities, Eve Burgess
Ballard Brief
Throughout Nepal, brick kilns employ thousands of families annually for the seasonal work of crafting and shipping bricks. As families migrate between work in brick factories and agricultural work at home, more factors block their children from a complete and quality education. The open invitation to begin working with their parents and to help provide for the family becomes a strong temptation that causes many children to give up on school. In addition, Nepal's lack of law enforcement frequently allows children to drop out of school early without consequence. Their parents do not attempt to stop them either, making little …

Nourish To Flourish: An Educational Program For Caregiver Involvement With Children Who Have Developmental Delay, Rhea Florez
OT Student Capstones
Caregivers of children with additional needs often experience high rates of burnout, stemming from limited time, lack of knowledge about child development and/or diagnoses, and elevated stress levels. This burnout can result in decreased caregiver follow-through on addressing a child’s needs or interventions in the home environment. This project aimed to bridge the gap between parents and increase their follow-through in the outpatient setting for children diagnosed with developmental delay and/or additional needs by providing a 10-week educational program. A mixed-methods approach was used with a pre-intervention and post-intervention using the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSOC) to measure parental …

Caste Inequality In Occupational Exposure To Heat Waves In India, Arpit Shah, Sneha Thapliyal, Anish Sugathan, Vimal Mishra, Deepak Malghan
Working Papers
India is a leading global hotspot for extreme heat waves induced by climate change. The social demography of India is centered on its caste hierarchy rooted in endogamous occu pational groups. We investigate the association between caste and climate inequality bystudying occupational exposure during the 2019 and 2022 heat waves. We combine high spatio-temporal resolution heat stress information from satellite imagery with a large na tionally and regionally representative labor force survey with rich socio-economic and demo graphic information (n > 100,000 individuals). The slope of the heat stress dose – workhours curve corresponding to the marginalized caste groups is between …

Weight Misperceptions And Health Management Via Information Nudges, Lanjie Wang, Xuan Zhang, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh
Research Collection School Of Economics
Being overweight or obese is a serious public health problem. Misperception of one's own weight status and inertia are major obstacles to weight control. To overcome these two problems, we conduct a randomized controlled trial in which participants are presented with the correct weight category based on their body mass index to remove any weight misperception, and then given six biweekly reminders about healthy diet and physical activity via SMS/email. We find that our intervention reduces individuals’ weight misperception and encourages healthier dietary choices. However, it has little impact on their physical activity. We further show that people who were …

Frequency And Severity Of Cow’S Milk Allergy Reactions In Children: A Prospective Audit, Loise Wang'ondu, Enock Topisia
Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Milk ranks as the second most common allergen, following peanuts. Recent studies from Spain and the
USA reports an annual frequency of accidental allergic reactions (AAR) ranging from 34% to 40%. AAR severity is influenced by food allergens and the presence of atopic diseases such as asthma, eczema, hay-fever, and recurrent wheezing. This study aimed to determine the frequency of accidental allergic reactions in children with cow’s milk protein allergy between September 2011 to September 2012. The study design employed is missing. A structured questionnaire was used and the guardians of the patients were guided in answering by the research …
