The Association Between Race And Obesity After Controlling For Dietary Behaviors Among Adolescents, Jasmine Nicole Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Childhood obesity has become a critical global public health concern due to its significant, long-term impact on overall quality of life and physical health. Despite efforts, there is a lack of information that includes all races and ages to combat childhood obesity. This study addressed the association between race and obesity after controlling for dietary behaviors among adolescents in Georgia, using quantitative cross-sectional data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS). Guided by the social ecological model, the research investigated how demographic factors and dietary behaviors influence obesity rates. Specifically, the study explored the association between age, race, …
The Interaction Between Frequency Of Cannabis Use And Method Of Delivery In Predicting Lack Of Interest In Eating, Joanne Lynn Pomeroy
The Interaction Between Frequency Of Cannabis Use And Method Of Delivery In Predicting Lack Of Interest In Eating, Joanne Lynn Pomeroy
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Cannabis use, its benefits, and adverse effects are being increasingly studied due to the abundance of existing dispensaries created under recreational and legalization policies. While research is inconclusive, an established association exists between increased cannabis concentration and anorexigenic properties. This study examines the interaction between the frequency of cannabis use and the method of delivery in predicting the lack of interest subtype of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) in emerging adults. Cannabis use was measured by the Cannabis Engagement Assessment (CES). The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) was used to measure anxiety, and the Pica, ARFID, and Rumination Disorder Questionnaire …

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The obesity epidemic is associated with increased colon cancer progression. As lipid droplets (LDs) fuel tumor growth, we aimed to determine the significance of diacyltransferases (diacylglycerol o-acyltransferases 1 and 2 [DGAT1/2]), responsible for LD biogenesis, in obesity-mediated colonic tumorigenesis. METHODS: Human colon cancer samples, colon cancer cells, colonospheres, and Apc colon cancer mouse model on a high-fat diet were employed. For DGAT1/2 inhibition, enzymatic inhibitors and small interfering RNA were used. Expression, pathways, cell cycle, and growth were assessed. Bioinformatic analyses of CUT&RUN and RNA sequencing data were performed. RESULTS: DGAT1/2 levels in human colon cancer tissue …

Biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) are groups of microbial genes that play a critical role in producing secondary metabolites with varied functions. Secondary metabolites include compounds such as siderophores, antibiotics, antifungal compounds, toxins, and pigments. The BGCs are modular units that usually contain a transcription factor, core biosynthetic gene, other genes involved in modifications and addition of side chains as well as genes needed for extracellular export. In specific, the metabolites produced by BGCs have diverse biological activities and usually display antimicrobial properties. The genome of Streptomyces murinus strain SPC1 revealed a complete BGC involved in the biosynthesis of the antifungal …

Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom forming fungus that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. G. lucidum, also known as lingzhi or reishi, is consumed in several Asian cultures to promote health and longevity. Bioactive molecules with anticancer properties have been isolated and characterized primarily from the species Ganoderma lucidum, and the cytotoxic potential of other species in the genus Ganoderma remains relatively unclear. Bioactive molecules isolated from mushroom fruiting bodies are demonstrated to have cytotoxicity against different cancer cell lines. Triterpenes and polysaccharides are the two major groups of compounds that exhibit antitumor and anti-inflammatory …
