Relationship Between Fat-Free Mass Index, Body Composition, Sports Nutrition Knowledge, And Sleep Quality In Female Soccer Players, Samantha Campuzano, Michael Rodriguez, Haydin Pazdur, Guillermo Escalante, Jason Ng
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous research has reported an inverse relationship between body fat percentage (BF%) and sports nutrition knowledge (SNK) in athletes. Fat-free mass index (FFMI) is a related measurement that allows for the normalization of fat-free mass (FFM) by dividing the FFM in kg by height in meters squared. However, it is unknown whether this variable is influenced by an athlete’s SKN and sleep quality. PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between FFMI, BF%, total body water (TBW), SNK, and sleep quality score (SQ) in Division II female soccer players. METHODS: Twenty-eight women (Mean + SD: Age = 19.4 ± 1.1 …

Effect Of Intranasal Insulin On Neurovascular Coupling In Healthy Young Adults, Brian Shariffi, Neil Mcmillan, Anna Gonsalves, Camila Manrique-Acevedo, Jaume Padilla, Jacqueline Limberg
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
ABSTRACT
Emerging evidence supports an essential role for insulin signaling in neurovascular coupling (NVC) – the link between neuronal activity and cerebral blood flow. In preclinical animal models, impaired insulin signaling is associated with reduced NVC, highlighting the neurogenic role of insulin. However, it remains unclear whether brain insulin stimulation can enhance NVC in humans. PURPOSE: To examine the acute effect of intranasal insulin delivery on NVC. We hypothesized intranasal insulin would augment NVC in healthy young adults. METHODS: Carotid artery blood flow (CBF, Doppler ultrasound) and middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv, transcranial Doppler ultrasound) were measured during …

Investigation Into Chin-Force Of Violinists, Ciya Clyde, Miles Mercer, Julia Freedman Silvernail
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Pain and discomfort have become a routine part of life for many orchestral musicians. Violinists in particular experience high number of injuries in their upper body, including the neck, shoulders, and arms. Force applied to the instrument at the chin provides the stabilization of the instrument required for performance but may contribute to these injuries. Due to the scarcity of research on musicians' physical health, it is challenging to determine the sources of musculoskeletal injuries in violinists. Nonetheless, examining the force applied at the chin could serve as a valuable starting point for investigation. PURPOSE: To investigate how chin-force is …

Muscle atrophy is a concern in various health conditions, such as aging, cancer, and diabetes. As such, finding effective therapies to treat muscle loss is of significant value. The best treatment for muscle atrophy is exercise. However, many with these conditions either cannot or will not exercise. This highlights the value of finding an effective pharmacologic therapy. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is one of the best-characterized exercise-responsive molecular signals. Despite suppressing muscle synthesis acutely, chronic AMPK activation has been shown to prevent muscle loss in wasting conditions. Our collaborator company, Biolexis Therapeutics, has identified MLX-0871 as a novel AMPK-activating oral …

Tarnopolsky et al. (1990) showed significantly higher fat oxidation (FOx) in women versus men during endurance exercise, likely due to their higher concentrations of estrogen and type I muscle fibers. Prior studies support this stance (Venables et al. 2000), yet Wallis et al. (2006) showed no effect of sex on the metabolic response to exercise. PURPOSE: To compare substrate metabolism between men and women during submaximal exercise prescribed using metabolic (percent ventilatory threshold, %VT) and relative (percent maximal heart rate, %HRmax) intensities. METHODS: Healthy, non-obese men (n = 23) and women (n = 13) (age, % fat, and VO2 …

Less than 7% of the world's population live at an altitude above 1500 m. Yet, as many as 67% of medalists in the 2020 men's and women's Olympic marathon, and 100% of medalists in the 2020 men's and women's Olympic 5000 m track race may have been born or raised above this otherwise rare threshold. As a possible explanation, research spanning nearly a quarter of a century demonstrates that indigenous highlanders exhibit pulmonary adaptations distinct from their lowland counterparts. These adaptations may then promote endurance performance. Indeed, healthy indigenous highlanders often exhibit a larger aerobic exercise capacity compared to sea-level …
