Despite their wide applications to language understanding tasks, large language models (LLMs) still face challenges such as hallucinations - the occasional fabrication of information, and alignment issues - the lack of associations with human-curated world models (e.g., intuitive physics or common-sense knowledge). Additionally, the black-box nature of LLMs makes it highly challenging to train them meaningfully in order to achieve a desired behavior. Specifically, the attempt to adjust LLMs’ concept embedding spaces can be highly intractable, which involves analyzing the implicit impact on LLMs’ numerous parameters and the resulting inductive biases. This paper proposes a novel architecture that wraps powerful …

Abstract: The present work investigated the structure-function relationship of dry fractionated oat flour (DFOF) as a techno-functional ingredient using bread as a model system. Mechanically, DFOF fractions (F), that is, F1: <224 µm, F2: 250–280 µm, F3: 280–500 µm, F4: 500–600 µm, and whole oat flour (F5) were blended with white wheat flour at 10%, 30%, and 50% substitution levels for bread making. The blended flours, doughs, and bread samples were assessed for their techno-functional, nutritional, and structural characteristics. The results of Mixolab and the Rapid Visco Analyzer show that the 50% substituted F3 fraction exhibits the highest water absorption properties (69.53%), whereas the 50% F1 fraction exhibits the highest peak viscosity of the past slurry. Analysis of bread samples revealed a lower particle size of DFOF fractions and higher supplementation levels, increased β-glucan levels (0.13–1.29 g/100 bread (db), reduced fermentable monosaccharides, that is, glucose (1.44–0.33 g/100 g), and fructose (1.06–0.28 g/100 g). The effect of particle size surpassed the substitution level effect on bread volume reduction. The lowest hardness value for F1 is 10%, and the highest value for F2 is 50%. The total number of cells in the bread slice decreased from the control to the F4 fraction (50%). Multi-criteria analysis indicated that DFOF fractions produced breads with similar structure and higher nutritional value developed from white wheat flour. Practical Application: The use of mechanically fractionated oat flours fractions in white wheat flour breads can improve the nutritional profile without affecting the physical properties of the bread product. Based on the oat flour fractions, bakers and food processing companies can tailor the bread formulations for high β-glucan, high fiber, and low reduced sugar claims.

A Human-Centered Framework For Oncological Healthcare System Modeling Applied To Mobile Radiation Delivery, Alex Price
Doctoral Dissertations
"Healthcare systems engineering is challenging due to the complexity, geographic expansiveness, inertial properties, and the heterogeneous sub-systems, with varying vested interests. Additionally, humans comprise many of the forms and functions, and are independent, with resistance and uncertainty in their decision-making that adds complexity. Human-centered systems modeling approaches are therefore needed to capture this unique aspect of a healthcare system and to enhance understanding of emergent healthcare properties. This dissertation focuses on integrating systems modeling within healthcare and emphasizes the importance of incorporating human decision-making. Moreover, the incorporation of a human-centered approach yields particularly valuable insights into the decision-making processes that …

Textural Characterisation Of Wheat–Oat Breads Using A Combination Of Quantitative Descriptive Analysis And Partial Napping Profiling Techniques, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Shivani Pathania, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Ciara Mcdonagh, Emily Crofton
Articles
The aim of this study was to determine the textural sensory profile of wheat breads developed using oat flour at different substitution levels (10%, 30%, and 50%) and particle sizes (<224, 250–280, 280–500, 500–600 μm). A trained descriptive panel evaluated the wheat–oat breads using quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) (n = 8) and partial napping (PN) (n = 12) sensory techniques. The QDA results showed that the textural properties of the breads were significantly affected by oat flour at different substitution and particle size levels (P < 0.001). The attributes crumb ‘denseness' and ‘stickiness' discriminated most frequently across samples, while crumb ‘chewiness' and ‘dryness' discriminated the least. Principal component analysis (PCA) illustrated that in PC1 (59%) crumb ‘denseness' was positively correlated with crumb ‘hardness' and ‘graininess', while ‘stickiness' was negatively correlated with crumb ‘graininess'. The application of clustering techniques on QDA data showed that breads with 10% oat flour were differentiated based on particle size; however, as the substitution level of oat flour increased, the substitution level of oat flour used in formulations exceeded the effect of particle size. In terms of PN, panellists identified four distinct groups of wheat–oat breads, indicating that wheat breads with 10% oat flour and <224 μm, 280–500 μm and whole oat flour had similar textural properties to the control wheat bread sample. The texture of wheat breads substituted with 50% oat flour were very different to the control. The results of this study suggest that in addition to the effect of substitution level, fractionation of oat flour may have application in the production of wheat bread formulations with different textural profiles. The findings also emphasise the importance of considering clustering techniques when evaluating complex samples for new product development applications.

Fiddler crabs, as coastal ecosystem engineers, play a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and accelerating the flow of material and energy. Here we show how widespread crab burrows modify the carbon sequestration capacity of different habitats across a large climatic gradient. The process of crab burrowing results in the reallocation of sediment organic carbon and humus. Crab burrows can increase more greenhouse gases emissions compared to the sediment matrix (CO2: by 17-30%; CH4: by 49-141%). Straightforward calculations indicate that these increased emissions could offset 35-134% of sediment carbon burial in these two ecosystems. This research highlights the complex interactions between …

Introduction: Nursing school is a physically and mentally challenging commitment that can result in students sacrificing sleep and compromised sleep quality.
Methodology: A cross-sectional mixed methodology research study of Georgia Southern University’s nursing students was conducted to gauge students' self-perceived sleep habits and current and past academic performance quantified by GPA. Five respondents (whose results were excluded from the data analysis) confirmed the questions were clear and relevant.
Results and Discussion: Thirty-two (n=32) questionnaires were received, of which four were excluded from the final analysis as some questions were not answered. More than 50% of respondents said their GPA decreased …

Inclusive work-integrated learning (WIL) requires collaboration between universities, host organizations and students, particularly, when designing and delivering WIL for students with disabilities. Host organizations, however, are not often included in the collaborations. This study explored host organization knowledge, capacity and challenges to providing WIL experiences for students with disability. A case study multi-method approach comprising an online survey and focus groups was undertaken. Host organizations, represented by supervisors, providing WIL to students enrolled in health courses at two Australian higher education institutions participated. The perceived need for student disclosure, office building limitations, and host organization limited knowledge of WIL expectations, …

Balancing Energy Transition: Assessing Decent Living Standards And Future Energy Demand In The Global South, Souran Chatterjee
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Achieving low energy demand in buildings is crucial in climate change mitigation. In the Global South, however, reducing the energy demand blanketly is not advisable due to critical gaps in access to the basic services supporting Decent Living Standards (DLS). Current energy demand scenarios mostly overlook achievement of DLS. Furthermore, model limitations in representing distributional aspects hinder modelling future energy demands to meet DLS. Supported by new evidence from a set of detailed sectoral and integrated assessment models, this research contributes to bridging this gap by exploring future trends in DLS achievement and linkages with energy demand in the Global …
