A Literature Review Of Factors Contributing To Archaeal Diversity, Anna R. Carmen Jan 2024

A Literature Review Of Factors Contributing To Archaeal Diversity, Anna R. Carmen

Honors Program Theses

Archaea, being classified as its own separate domain only within the past fifty years, has earned a reputation of being notoriously difficult to culture in a laboratory setting. Because of this, their functions in ecosystems and potential for use in bioremediation is largely unknown and untapped. In order to further develop methodologies to successfully cultivate these microbes, an analysis of past research is needed to help understand where to lead research. After analyzing past studies on archaea and recalcitrant microbes as a whole, it is found that other factors are often overlooked and a label of recalcitrance is added. This …

Environmental Law For A Just Transition, Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2024

Environmental Law For A Just Transition, Dayna Nadine Scott

Articles & Book Chapters

The environmental justice movement, which turns our attention to fairness in the distribution of environmental benefits and burdens and in the processes, biases and
structures that determine those distributions, is challenging the foundations of environmental law.
• ‘Extractivism’ – a mode of accumulation that necessitates both a high pace and a large scale of taking of natural resources such as fossil fuels – is deeply embedded in environmental law, producing uneven costs/benefits and intense, concentrated impacts on people and ecosystems. Even as we move towards a greener economy, environmental laws and regulations governing such areas as facility siting, pollution permitting, …

Azospirillum Brasilense Inoculation In A Maize–Urochloa–Rice Cropping System Promotes Soil Chemical And Biological Changes And Increases Productivity, Philippe Solano Toledo Silva, Nayara Siviero Garcia, Fernando Shintate Galindo, Orivaldo Arf, Thiago Assis Rodrigues Nogueira, Arun Dilipkumar Sharma, Ana Maria Rodrigues Cassiolato

Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Large quantities of cover crop residues in the soil, combined, or not, with the inoculation of seeds with diazotrophic bacteria, can increase organic matter (OM) and protect soil microorganisms, such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytic (DSE) fungi. Thus, the use of these sustainable biotechnologies can benefit microbial interactions, soil fertility and rice production in the Brazilian Cerrado region. In this study, we evaluated the effects of maize and Urochloa ruziziensis, intercropped or individually, as cover crops and an inoculation of Azospirillum brasilense on the chemical (fertility) and biological (C–microbial biomass and C–CO2 released) attributes of soil …

Striking A Balance: Why Federal And State Laws Should Be Revised To Effectively Deter Puppy Mills, Kaitlyn Cameron Jan 2024

Striking A Balance: Why Federal And State Laws Should Be Revised To Effectively Deter Puppy Mills, Kaitlyn Cameron

Animal Law Review

The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was passed in 1966 with the purpose of ensuring the humane care and treatment of animals. The AWA delegates licensing responsibilities to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Animal Plant and Health Inspection Services (APHIS), who have the authority to investigate violations of the AWA and penalize relevant organizations, such as puppy mills, when necessary. Unfortunately, the AWA sets forth minimum standards for the humane care and treatment of these animals and the USDA has exercised its own discretion in penalizing violations of the AWA. The AWA establishes standards for compliance, but …

Investigating Tuberculosis Dynamics Using Surveillance Data And Statistical Modeling: Studies In Three High Burden Settings, Melanie Hunter Chitwood Jan 2024

Investigating Tuberculosis Dynamics Using Surveillance Data And Statistical Modeling: Studies In Three High Burden Settings, Melanie Hunter Chitwood

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of death from infectious disease globally, despite the availability of effective antibiotic treatment. Control efforts focus on the rapid diagnosis and treatment of individuals with TB, which reduces both disease-related morbidity and mortality and onward transmission. In addition to passive case finding, the World Health Organization recommends active case finding for high-risk individuals and their contacts. Expanding these activities to populations in which there is evidence of recent transmission may be a suitable strategy to reduce TB burden, but identifying these populations is a persistent challenge. Statistical analyses, informed by high quality surveillance data, …

Development Of Fungal Hydrogels For 3d Bioprinting And Cellular Agriculture, Lauren E. Doyle

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Hydrogel scaffolds are an important component to cellular agriculture. There is a need for a sustainable alternative to the commonly used gelatin-sodium-alginate hydrogels. Specific edible fungus species may provide a suitable alternative. Many fungi possess high protein contents, ease of cultivation, and strong functional properties. However, functional characterizations and application of fungal flour and protein extracts in cellular agriculture are lacking in the literature. Therefore, this study’s objectives were to 1) Develop processes to create functional fungal protein fractions from different fungal strains and evaluate their characteristics, and 2) Quantify the printability of the resulting fungal gels for the creation …

Assessing Household Gac Water Filters For Pfas Removal From Private Drinking Water Wells, Mccallah Ferry

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This research paper delves into the efficacy of a typical household water filter in removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a concerning class of chemicals prevalent in water sources. PFAS, known for their persistence and potential health risks, have prompted regulatory actions such as the Third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 3) and the National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR) by the U.S. EPA. While municipal water utilities are subject to regulatory oversight, individuals relying on private wells face challenges in ensuring water quality.

The study employs a model to assess the performance of a SAMSUNG Ice and Water Refrigerator …

Addressing Healthcare Disparities Faced By Aging Down Syndrome Populations, Rhea Mistry

Pitzer Senior Theses

Down syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal genetic condition that impacts the development of the body and brain. The life expectancy of individuals with DS has drastically improved over the decades, increasing from 9 years in 1929 to 25 years in 1983 and further reaching 60 years by 2002. Individuals with DS face a variety of prominent co-occurring health conditions that are subject to change over time, including cognitive, visual, and hearing impairments, sleep apnea, cardiovascular defects, Down syndrome regression disorder, and dementia. Despite this increase in life span, DS is still most familiar to pediatric care providers, resulting in healthcare …

Hesychasm And The Jesus Prayer: Spiritual Formation In An Ecumenical World – Exploring The Practice Of The Eastern Orthodox Jesus Prayer With The Evangelical Protestant Tradition, Craig Francis Bosman

Theses

The question that forms the heart of this research is: “Can the Jesus Prayer establish roots to develop and flourish, and be accepted as a new, legitimate practice in Evangelicalism?” To begin answering, the practice will be explored within its Eastern Orthodox context focusing on the Jesus Prayers’ biblical roots, early development, and official acceptance within Orthodoxy. Then the Evangelical movement will be surveyed to gain an understanding of its identity from a sociological and theological perspective with special attention on its soteriological framework, customary spiritual disciplines, and general attitudes toward mysticism (defined as direct experience of God through apophatic, …

Biopiracy: Using New Laws And Databases To Protect Indigenous Communities, Cleo-Symone Scott Jan 2024

Biopiracy: Using New Laws And Databases To Protect Indigenous Communities, Cleo-Symone Scott

Law Student Publications

Indigenous people have a historical link to those who inhabited a country or region at the time when people of different cultures or origins arrived. Traditionally, indigenous people have a special relationship with their ancestral environments. But their way of living has long been under threat. The land that indigenous people live on is home to over 80% of our planet’s biodiversity, but it continues to be appropriated and plundered due to bioprospecting or, as some call it, biopiracy. Bioprospecting is defined as “the exploration and information gathering of genetic and biochemical material to develop commercial products.” While innovation is …

Learning About Data Sources Through The Dataset Presentation

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

Economics has become an increasingly data-driven, empirical discipline. Alongside this, the advantages of undergraduate research have become more appreciated. These trends merge with students employing empirical techniques in undergraduate research. An active literature has developed on how to implement this. This paper addresses a potential hold-up for undergraduates that has received little attention: how to acquaint students with major data sources. To accomplish this, we provide an assignment (prompt, list of data sources by difficulty, and grading rubric) in the form of a short, data-driven presentation designed to have students learn, acquire, and work with a publicly available dataset.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The paucity of information concerning the occurrence of strongyle nematodes in New England dairy goats prompted a survey of 241 dairy goats from throughout New England. Of the 241 goats examined using the McMaster technique, 104 (42.7%) were infected with strongyles with a mean intensity (+ SE) of 369.7 + 45.8 eggs per gram. Subsequent molecular examination of 50 random samples from these goats revealed a prevalence of 88% infection specifically with Haemonchus contortus. Haemonchus contortus is the most important internal parasite of sheep and goats, exerting a crushing economic burden on the livestock industry worldwide due to lowered milk …

Genotype And Sex Specific Effects Of Methionine Restriction On The Life And Healthspan Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Robert Smith Jan 2024

Genotype And Sex Specific Effects Of Methionine Restriction On The Life And Healthspan Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Robert Smith

All ETDs from UAB

Reduced dietary intake of the amino acid methionine has been reported to significantly extend the lifespan of common laboratory model organisms including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mus musculus, and Drosophila melanogaster. Methionine restriction (MR) has also been achieved via non-dietary means such as metabolite supplementation and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing. MR along with protein and calorie restriction are known as dietary interventions capable of producing pro-longevity benefits through regulation of nutrient sensing pathways. Recent studies in model organisms have also identified beneficial effects of a low methionine diet on aging-associated phenotypes and markers of overall healthspan. However, the effects of this intervention on …

Systematic Review Of Built Environment Attributes Of Walkability : Cases Of Malaysia, Khair Eddine Demdoum, Yazid Mohd Yunos, Norsidah Ujang, Nangkula Utaberta

NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)

Walkability has gained considerable traction in recent years as a key concept for promoting sustainable urban environments and healthier lifestyles. Built environment attributes such as infrastructure, streetscape design, land use mix, and street connectivity were found to have a high impact on walking behavior. However, due to the context-specific nature of walkability, where attributes deemed important in one context may not hold the same significance in another, this study aims to examine walkability attributes and methods within the Malaysian context. The goal is to offer valuable insights for researchers and policymakers operating in similar contexts. This study employed a systematic …
