Expecting Medication Surveillance, Jennifer D. Oliva Jan 2024

Expecting Medication Surveillance, Jennifer D. Oliva

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In response to federal financial incentives and mandates, all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories administer electronic prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs). Federal and state policymakers justified the implementation and enhancement of ubiquitous prescription drug monitoring by contending that expansive state drug surveillance was a necessary weapon in the war against the American drug overdose crisis. As is often the case with tools designed for law enforcement surveillance, however, PDMPs have proven susceptible to mission creep. Although pioneer PDMPs were paper-based systems that limited their surveillance to a narrow class of heavily regulated controlled substances, modern …

Maladaptive Behaviors In Disasters: Case Study Evaluation Of Hurricane Hugo, Hurricane Katrina And The Haiti Earthquake, Andrew M Milsten, Christopher S Kang, Ira Nemeth

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Maladaptive behaviors during a disaster refer to actions that do not benefit the individual or society. Quarantelli highlights several maladaptive behaviors myths associated with disasters: widespread antisocial behavior, passivity, role conflict or abandonment, and sudden widespread mental health breakdowns (1). Despite early work reporting these myths, the common perception is that maladaptive behaviors such as rioting, looting, panic, and criminal conduct are prevalent in the wake of disasters. This is despite research by de Ville de Goyet and Arnold which has called on public officials and the media to stop propagating false disaster myths (2, 3). The classic academic response …

Despite the growing use of point of care ultrasound (POCUS) in contemporary medical practice and the existence of clinical guidelines addressing its specific applications, there remains a lack of standardization and agreement on optimal practices for several areas of POCUS use. The Society of Point of Care Ultrasound (SPOCUS) formed a working group in 2022 to establish a set of recommended best practices for POCUS, applicable to clinicians regardless of their training, specialty, resource setting, or scope of practice. Using a three-round modified Delphi process, a multi-disciplinary panel of 22 POCUS experts based in the United States reached consensus on …

Fighting Institutional Betrayal: Gender Pay Equity Litigation Against University Employers, Nantiya Ruan

Scholarly Works

Universities are workplaces replete with observed gender pay gaps despite the legal protections in place to mitigate against such a reality. This Article analyzes recent university gender pay equity lawsuits to examine their efficacy in four types of litigation: (1) Class and Collection Action; (2) Government Action; (3) Union Action; and (4) Individual Action. From these case studies of different types of litigation, we learn several important lessons about prosecuting equal pay laws and how to best protect against unequal pay.

First, the Article sets forth the gender pay equity landscape, including the national pay gap picture, the legal framework …

Private Climate Governance Of Finance: "Net Zero" Prospects And Politics., Cynthia A. Williams Jan 2024

Private Climate Governance Of Finance: "Net Zero" Prospects And Politics., Cynthia A. Williams

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In 2021, as part of the COP26 climate negotiations in Glasgow, the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (“GFANZ”) was announced. This Alliance of banks, asset managers, and insurance companies, among other financial institutions, with more than $130 trillion of assets under management when announced, was based on a pledge by the participating companies to work towards net-zero status in their businesses by 2050 or sooner. Led by former UK Bank of England Governor Mark Carney, who is now the U.N.’s Special Envoy on Climate, it seemed to have some promise as a “soft law” governance mechanism to develop voluntary …

Mending A Broken Ethics Culture: The Promise And Pitfalls Of The Supreme Court's, Charles G. Geyh Jan 2024

Mending A Broken Ethics Culture: The Promise And Pitfalls Of The Supreme Court's, Charles G. Geyh

Articles by Maurer Faculty

The Judicial Conference of the United States has done an admirable job of embedding its code of conduct into the culture of the federal courts and creating an ethical climate within the federal judiciary. The ethics culture on the Supreme Court, in contrast, is quite different, as reflected in the recent litany of ethical problems the Justices have encountered, the Court's longstanding hostility to proposals for it to adopt a code, and the defensive tone of the new code itself. Legal scholarship analogizing judges to priests in a faith-based constitutional order underscores the need for judges to be true believers …

Advances In Nanoprobes For Molecular Mri Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Parag Parekh, Andrew A Badachhape, Eric A Tanifum, Ananth V Annapragada, Ketan B Ghaghada

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and a leading cause of mortality in the elderly population. Diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease has traditionally relied on evaluation of clinical symptoms for cognitive impairment with a definitive diagnosis requiring post-mortem demonstration of neuropathology. However, advances in disease pathogenesis have revealed that patients exhibit Alzheimer's disease pathology several decades before the manifestation of clinical symptoms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role in the management of patients with Alzheimer's disease. The clinical availability of molecular MRI (mMRI) contrast agents can revolutionize the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. In this article, we …

Generation And Characterization Of In Vitro Transcribed Mrna, Cristina Poveda, Yi-Lin Chen, Ulrich Strych

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Here we describe the in vitro preparation of mRNA from DNA templates, including setting up the transcription reaction, mRNA capping, and mRNA labeling. We then describe methods used for mRNA characterization, including UV and fluorescence spectrophotometry, as well as gel electrophoresis. Moreover, characterization of the in vitro transcribed RNA using the Bioanalyzer instrument is described, allowing a higher resolution analysis of the target molecules. For the in vitro testing of the mRNA molecules, we include protocols for the transfection of various primary cell cultures and the confirmation of translation by intracellular staining and western blotting.

“Muchakang Pangkalawakan”: Queering Engagements With Bakla Of The Philippine Tropics, Artemio P. Millo

Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications

The performance of participants in the Miss Gay Muchakang Pangkalawan [Miss Ugly Gay Universe] in Quiapo, Manila, reflects characteristics of the flamboyant and effeminate bakla. However, these stereotypical depictions may not always be consistent with how participants view themselves. This study argues that an introspective understanding of how participants make sense of their identity work engendered by ever-turning tropes reveals slippages that can liberate them from existing oppressive stereotypes. By utilizing personal narrative and ethnographic reflexivity, this study deconstructs the participants’ performances, revealing identity-making that may reinforce or resist dominant discourses on the bakla under which these narratives are …

Best Practice Recommendations For Coaching Gymnasts To Avoid Burnout And Reframe Performance Anxiety, Clare A. Mccall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Gymnastics is deemed a psychologically demanding sport, with associated risk factors of burnout and performance anxiety. To date, relatively little research has explored the specific goal and perfectionistic processes of gymnasts, despite these risks. This body of work identified the specific goal-related constructs and perfectionistic orientation of young athletes and examined how these associated with burnout and performance anxiety. It comprised of two studies with a mixed methods design. The first study aimed to systematically review literature investigating how goal-related constructs and perfectionism associate with burnout and performance anxiety in young athletes. This review focused on summer and winter Olympic …

Developing A Framework For Musical Ekphrasis In Jazz Composition, Jessica Carlton Jan 2024

Developing A Framework For Musical Ekphrasis In Jazz Composition, Jessica Carlton

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Musical ekphrasis, as defined by musicologist Siglind Bruhn (2001), refers to musical compositions that transform, re-create, or ‘re-present’ a work of visual art or poetry. Though there exists a significant body of musical works that are based on visual art and poetry, there is a distinct lack of research and documentation on musical ekphrasis, particularly in the field of jazz and improvised music. Further, a formalised process framework for practitioners approaching ekphrastic composition has yet to be developed. This research project investigated musical ekphrasis through qualitative interviews with key practitioners, and a combination of practice-led research and research-led practice methodologies, …

Attitudes And Perceptions Towards Privacy And Surveillance In Australia, Aleatha J. Shanley Jan 2024

Attitudes And Perceptions Towards Privacy And Surveillance In Australia, Aleatha J. Shanley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Understanding attitudes towards privacy and surveillance technologies used to enhance security objectives is a complex, but crucial aspect for policy makers to consider. Historically, terrorism-related incidents justified the uptake of surveillance practices. More recently however, biosecurity concerns have motivated nation-states to adopt more intrusive surveillance measures. There is a growing body of literature that supports the public’s desire to maintain privacy despite fears of biological or physical threats.

This research set out to explore attitudes towards privacy and surveillance in an Australian context. Throughout the course of this endeavour, the COVID-19 pandemic emerged bringing with it a variety of track …

Coordinating The Telematic Music Performance Experience With Telemidi: Synchronising Nodes, Enhancing Musicality, And Delivering Simultaneity, Matthew Clive Bray Jan 2024

Coordinating The Telematic Music Performance Experience With Telemidi: Synchronising Nodes, Enhancing Musicality, And Delivering Simultaneity, Matthew Clive Bray

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The practice of Telematic Music Performance (TMP), a subset of Network Music Performance (NMP), enables geographically remote musicians to engage in real-time musical interplay, typically occurring over a Wide Area Network (WAN: the Internet). However, the transmission of data between remote collaborators introduces millisecond latencies that obstruct the nuance of traditional human-to-human musical intercourse, and consequentially, the music generated by TMP often lacks rudimentary degrees of syncopation. Reducing network latency has been a critical focal point for research in this field, wherein effective networks support low-latency, multi-modal data transmission to enhance sensations of immersion and telepresence for participants; the sense …

Based on teacher feedback, a model for embedding the development of social and emotional competencies (Equity in Positivity) in the Western Australian secondary metropolitan public-school context, in a sustainable and cost-effective way, was developed over a six year period and linked to the Australian Wellbeing Hub (2020).

The researcher adopted a mixed method, instrumental bounded case study methodology, longitudinally applied through the lens …

The Commonwealth Of Amnesia: A Collection Of Erasure And Cut-Up Poems Exploring The Forgotten Histories Of Croatian And Yugoslav Peoples In Australia And An Exegesis Obliteration Creates More: Examining The Wreck Of History Through Whiteout, Blackout And Cut-Up Erasure Poetry, Natalie Damjanovich-Napoleon Jan 2024

The Commonwealth Of Amnesia: A Collection Of Erasure And Cut-Up Poems Exploring The Forgotten Histories Of Croatian And Yugoslav Peoples In Australia And An Exegesis Obliteration Creates More: Examining The Wreck Of History Through Whiteout, Blackout And Cut-Up Erasure Poetry, Natalie Damjanovich-Napoleon

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis consists of two parts, a collection of poems, “The Commonwealth of Amnesia”, and an accompanying exegesis. The collection explores the forgotten histories of Croatian and Yugoslav immigrants in Australia from 1901 to 1957 through the medium of erasure and cut-up poetry, re-arranging words found in nonfiction documents to posit that forgetting can be metaphorically and visually represented through erasure while also re-narrativising a text. Erasure poetry takes a textual document and using whiteout or blackout erases portions of a text, transforming that text into a poem; cut-up poetry rearranges the words of a document in a textual version …

Articles

Educational institutions increasingly rely on digital platforms to deliver content and learning, monitor attendance, communicate with stakeholders, and evaluate institutional performance. Despite the efficiency and accessibility gains they offer, digital platforms are powered by personal data which, through a process of datafication, can be used to track, monitor, and profile staff and students. The insights drawn from this data can be used to shape educational and professional futures. This article examines how datafication has become a social justice issue in education, discussing the implications for well-being, decision-making, governance, and power in education. Using Hintz and colleagues framework for data justice, …

The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions: Deinstitutionalization And Mass Incarceration Nation, Corinna Barrett Lain

Law Faculty Publications

They say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and our failed implementation of deinstitutionalization inthe 1970s is a prime example of the point. In this symposium contribution-a response to Jeffrey Bellin's book MassIncarceration Nation-I offer a historical account of deinstitutionalization of state mental hospi tals, tracing how severelymentally ill patients were discharged from state hospitals and eventually made their way back to secure beds, but in our nation's jails and prisons instead. Protecting Feminist Culture Through Feminine Register In Speculative Fiction: Linking Curriculum And Reading For Pleasure In Nsw High Schools., Abdul Baseer

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper presents a case for speculative fiction’s potential to uphold the feminist cause in our current global scenario of male violence. Young Adult (YA) and children’s speculative fiction around feminist themes should be included in high school libraries for pleasure for reading and forms of support to the current curriculum and to address contemporary social issues including patriarchy and less space for feminist agency. This writing suggests five titles in current speculative fiction built around the feminine register for inclusion in a New South Wales high school’s library collection targeting stages 5 and 6 students and linked to the …

Disruption Of The Nascent Polypeptide-Associated Complex Leads To Reduced Polyglutamine Aggregation And Toxicity, Leeran B. Dublin-Ryan, Ankan K. Bhadra, Heather L. True Jan 2024

Disruption Of The Nascent Polypeptide-Associated Complex Leads To Reduced Polyglutamine Aggregation And Toxicity, Leeran B. Dublin-Ryan, Ankan K. Bhadra, Heather L. True

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The nascent polypeptide-associate complex (NAC) is a heterodimeric chaperone complex that binds near the ribosome exit tunnel and is the first point of chaperone contact for newly synthesized proteins. Deletion of the NAC induces embryonic lethality in many multi-cellular organisms. Previous work has shown that the deletion of the NAC rescues cells from prion-induced cytotoxicity. This counterintuitive result led us to hypothesize that NAC disruption would improve viability in cells expressing human misfolding proteins. Here, we show that NAC disruption improves viability in cells expressing expanded polyglutamine and also leads to delayed and reduced aggregation of expanded polyglutamine and changes …

Mapping Of A Hybrid Insulin Peptide In The Inflamed Islet Β-Cells From Nod Mice, Janet M Wenzlau, Orion J Peterson, Anthony N Vomund, James E Dilisio, Anita Hohenstein, Kathryn Haskins, Xiaoxiao Wan

2020-Current year OA Pubs

There is accumulating evidence that pathogenic T cells in T1D recognize epitopes formed by post-translational modifications of β-cell antigens, including hybrid insulin peptides (HIPs). The ligands for several CD4 T-cell clones derived from the NOD mouse are HIPs composed of a fragment of proinsulin joined to peptides from endogenous β-cell granule proteins. The diabetogenic T-cell clone BDC-6.9 reacts to a fragment of C-peptide fused to a cleavage product of pro-islet amyloid polypeptide (6.9HIP). In this study, we used a monoclonal antibody (MAb) to the 6.9HIP to determine when and where HIP antigens are present in NOD islets during disease progression …
