Blinded By The Light: Resolving The Conflict Between Satellite Megaconstellations And Astronomy, David A. Koplow
Blinded By The Light: Resolving The Conflict Between Satellite Megaconstellations And Astronomy, David A. Koplow
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
The sudden emergence of large constellations of small satellites in low altitude orbits represents one of the most dramatic contemporary innovations in outer space. Promising low-cost, low-latency global communications and spectacular capacities for remote sensing of the Earth, these satellites will soon number in the tens of thousands, sponsored by diverse corporations and countries around the world. But this proliferation of spacecraft comes at a steep cost in unavoidable interference with ground-based astronomy: as the satellites overfly the observatories, they block the views of remote objects and phenomena, leaving obliterating white streaks on the collected imagery, and obscuring access to …

Environmental Information Avoidance Motives On A U.S. Campus, Mary Beth Deline, Laura N. Rickard, Jared V. Worwood, Pei Geng, Elisabeth Reed
Iowa Journal of Communication
Although communication, broadly, is often identified as a key factor across campus sustainability initiatives, few studies have examined specific information behaviors that can affect reception of such efforts. We therefore seek to characterize motives for a key communication barrier to campus sustainability efforts: environmental information avoidance (IA), and to investigate whether these motives differ in relation to known or unknown information. This exploratory study thematically analyzed answers from an open-ended question on a questionnaire with faculty, staff and students on a U.S. university campus. We identified six environmental IA motives, ranging from information overload to efficacy constraints. Correlational analysis found …

How Influencer Marketers Inspire Trust: The Case Of Sadaf Beauty, Maryam Amini
Iowa Journal of Communication
This article presents a qualitative case study of Iranian beauty influencer Sadaf Masaeli (Sadaf Beauty), focusing on how she has cultivated her followers’ trust on her Instagram account. Sadaf was identified as the second most influential beauty influencer of 2019 in the world by Forbes magazine (Caludet, 2019). Her example provides insight into how influencer marketing has become a popular way to increase brand awareness, find new customers and enhance purchase intention. In particular, her case highlights the effects of a contradiction shaping influencer marketing. On the one hand, influencers appear as authentic social media users, to attract followers whilst, …

You Shall Know A Forum By The Words They Keep: Analyzing Language Use In Accessibility Forums For Blind Users, Nithiya Venkatraman, Anand Aiyer, Yash Prakash, Vikas Ashok

Discussion forums are one of the favored platforms for knowledge sharing. Given their popularity, copious research exists on understanding linguistic and behavioral characteristics of forum conversations. However, prior investigations have mainly focused on general forums designed primarily for sighted users, and as such the applicability of their findings to the dedicated accessibility discussion forums frequented by blind individuals remains unanswered. To bridge this knowledge gap, and facilitate the development of better-informed assistive technologies for blind people, we investigated language use and identified the key semantic and cognitive characteristics of online accessibility forums. To aid our investigation, we collected a dataset …

Changes made to webpages can affect their retrievability. Often this is done with the intention of increasing the page's search engine ranking to improve overall access to information on the page. The Environmental Data and Governance Initiative (EDGI) created a dataset that describes changes on US federal environmental webpages between 2016 and 2020. EDGI noted that many environmental terms were deleted from the pages, but without user data, claims that page retrievability and public information access were lowered are only anecdotal. The Open Resource for Click Analysis in Search (ORCAS) dataset was created during the same time frame, from 2017 …

Examining Retrieval-Induced Forgetting And Recall Accuracy After Body-Worn Camera Footage Review, Kristie Bradfield
Examining Retrieval-Induced Forgetting And Recall Accuracy After Body-Worn Camera Footage Review, Kristie Bradfield
Theses : Honours
Despite the integration of body-worn cameras (BWCs) into frontline policing and the endorsement of BWC footage review by officers before reporting, empirical support for this practice is limited. This study explored whether BWC footage functions as a memory aid to improve recall accuracy and whether BWC review triggers retrieval-induced forgetting (i.e., where recalling specific items from memory impairs the recall of related but non-retrieved items). Specifically, it was hypothesised that BWC footage review would not significantly improve recall accuracy. Additionally, it was expected that participants exposed to BWC footage and retrieval practice (i.e., repeated retrieval of details of an observed …

Can Large Language Models Discern Evidence For Scientific Hypotheses? Case Studies In The Social Sciences, Sai Koneru, Jian Wu, Sarah Rajtmajer
Can Large Language Models Discern Evidence For Scientific Hypotheses? Case Studies In The Social Sciences, Sai Koneru, Jian Wu, Sarah Rajtmajer
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Hypothesis formulation and testing are central to empirical research. A strong hypothesis is a best guess based on existing evidence and informed by a comprehensive view of relevant literature. However, with exponential increase in the number of scientific articles published annually, manual aggregation and synthesis of evidence related to a given hypothesis is a challenge. Our work explores the ability of current large language models (LLMs) to discern evidence in support or refute of specific hypotheses based on the text of scientific abstracts. We share a novel dataset for the task of scientific hypothesis evidencing using community-driven annotations of studies …

This is a white paper on Workforce Development for Quantum Information Sciences (QIS) led by the Center for Real-Time Computing at Old Dominion University (ODU). We plan to investigate the potential of video lectures in supporting QIS. Specifically, we focus on following four objectives: (a) design a two-course series for both Master-level and PhD students; b) an upgrade of Experimental Lecture System (ELeSy) to test new, innovative, and transformative approaches for inclusive QIS education; c) design and implementation of a mixed-method systematic empirical study on the effects of video learning styles (in-person flipped classroom and voluntary video use) on graduate …

The transition to digital marketing has revolutionized advertising, reflecting and shaping societal norms and trends. The “Saving Ads” project addresses the challenges of preserving these ephemeral digital artifacts, essential for understanding the evolution of advertising and its socio-cultural impact. The initiative focuses on technical solutions for archiving dynamic online ads and enhancing access to these critical resources for future scholarship. By examining the preservation of online advertisements and suggesting improved approaches for archiving dynamic online content, this project contributes to the documentation of digital history.

Forecasting Crude Oil Price Using Multiple Factors, Hind Aldabagh, Xianrong Zheng, Mohammad Najand, Ravi Mukkamala
Computer Science Faculty Publications
In this paper, we predict crude oil price using various factors that may influence its price. The factors considered are physical market, financial, and trading market factors, including seven key factors and the dollar index. Firstly, we select the main factors that may greatly influence the prices. Then, we develop a hybrid model based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network to predict the prices. Lastly, we compare the CNN–LSTM model with other models, namely gradient boosting (GB), decision trees (DTs), random forests (RFs), neural networks (NNs), CNN, LSTM, and bidirectional LSTM (Bi–LSTM). The empirical …

Evaluating Social Media Reach Via Mainstream Media Discourse, Himarsha R. Jayanetti
Computer Science Faculty Publications
This study examines the intersection between social media and mainstream television (TV) news with an aim to understand how social media content amplifies its impact through TV broadcasts. While many studies emphasize social media as a primary platform for information dissemination, they often underestimate its total influence by focusing solely on interactions within the platform. This research examines instances where social media posts gain prominence on TV broadcasts, reaching new audiences and prompting public discourse. By using TV news closed captions, on-screen text recognition, and social media logo detection, we analyze how social media is referenced in TV news. Our …

A monumental change quietly is unfolding in the American West. For decades, the region has lagged the rest of the nation in coordinating electricity operations. Multiple efforts to change this stalled or never got off the ground. Now, everything is different. In the face of climate uncertainty and deepening concern that the region is unprepared for its energy future, stakeholders—government, industry, interest groups—are posturing to create formal electricity markets that will transform the region’s infrastructure, resilience, and economy for the remainder of this century.
Two paths are on the table. In one, much if not all the West will join …
A Global Crypto Code Of Conduct: Crafting An Internationally Centralized Regulatory Body For A Decentralized Asset, Mary Kavaloski
A Global Crypto Code Of Conduct: Crafting An Internationally Centralized Regulatory Body For A Decentralized Asset, Mary Kavaloski
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
The advent of Bitcoin in 2009 presented a previously unfathomable possibility for the future of currency and monetary transactions. Now, cryptocurrency is ubiquitous; it is increasingly seizing media headlines, novel swathes of investors, institutional bank involvement, and most importantly of all, the attention of government regulators. Yet governments around the globe have failed to adequately keep up with the pace of cryptocurrency's evolution, particularly because of their lack of expertise in this unprecedented area. This Note discusses how cryptocurrency's truly global footprint warrants a partnership between national regulators and industry actors at the international level. Specifically, by exploring the approaches …
Temporary Protection For Ukrainians In The European Union: Why Now And When Again?, Maryellen Fullerton
Temporary Protection For Ukrainians In The European Union: Why Now And When Again?, Maryellen Fullerton
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
In 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine produced an unprecedented wave of temporary immigration protections throughout the European Union (EU). Within the first few months of the war in Ukraine, over 4 million displaced individuals had registered for temporary protection. EU States distant from Ukraine sheltered hundreds of thousands of displaced families, while Poland and other EU States that border Ukraine sheltered more than 2 million. This groundswell response marked a striking departure from just seven years earlier, when the EU Commission and EU Council failed to use readily available laws to provide a temporary protection program for Syrians displaced …
Justifying Aggression: Russia's 2020 Constitutional Amendments And The Invasion Of Ukraine, Robert C. Blitt
Justifying Aggression: Russia's 2020 Constitutional Amendments And The Invasion Of Ukraine, Robert C. Blitt
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Beyond the alluring promise of an enhanced social safety net for Russian citizens, President Vladimir Putin's constitutional amendments of 2020 betrayed a distinct preoccupation with fortifying Russia's international standing and crafting a new national identity. By Putin's own account, these amendments were necessary to steel the country against the malevolent action of international conspirators committed to Russia's downfall. As this Article posits, these specific constitutional changes systematically entrenched an exceptionalist vision of Russian sovereignty and a civilizational identity that left the country constitutionally untethered from international norms and institutions, saturated in religious fervor and visions of imperial glory, and poised …

Book Review: From Thought To Action: Developing A Social Justice Orientation, Joy L. Daggs
Iowa Journal of Communication
In the second edition of From Thought to Action: Developing a Social Justice Orientation, Sanford helps to provide a framework for students’ first exposure to allyship and activism. In the preface of the book, Sanford (2024) articulates the three major purposes of the book, which include helping new allies, “a) focus on common humanity, b) feel less isolated on their social justice journey, c) figure out how to move from thought to action, either individually or collectively.” (p. xiv) The book could be used to supplement a course on Intercultural Communication, encouraging students to take their knowledge to collaborate with …
Structural Basis Of Key Conserved Cell-Surface Signaling Pathways Involved In Iron Import, Beau Jernberg
Structural Basis Of Key Conserved Cell-Surface Signaling Pathways Involved In Iron Import, Beau Jernberg
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Cell surface signaling (CSS) allows Gram-negative bacteria to transcriptionally regulate gene expression in response to external stimuli. CSS pathways involve three key components: an outer membrane transducer for sensing the extracellular stimuli; an inner membrane sigma regulator for relaying the signal; and a cytoplasmic sigma factor, which activates transcription of target genes. The goal of this research was to structurally and biophysically characterize events leading to the processing of the sigma regulator that results in transcription activation. Our model systems are the Pseudomonas capeferrum BN7/8 (Pup) and Escherichia coli ferric citrate (Fec) uptake pathways. We detail the X-ray crystal structure …

Information Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations
Effective identity management is essential for secure organizational processes, but organizations often do not approach it strategically. To break this trajectory, organizational policymakers need to define a clear and sustainable identity management strategy. This paper presents an overview and guidelines to help shape such strategy. It analyzes the key characteristics and trade-offs of today’s identity management models. Moreover, it offers practical recommendations for organizational policymakers when choosing among these models.
Immigration Detention Abolition And The Violence Of Digital Cages, Sarah R. Sherman-Stokes
Immigration Detention Abolition And The Violence Of Digital Cages, Sarah R. Sherman-Stokes
Faculty Scholarship
The United States has a long history of devastating immigration enforcement and surveillance. Today, in addition to more than 34,000 people held in immigration detention, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) surveils an astounding 296,000 people under its “Alternatives to Detention” program. The number of people subjected to this surveillance has grown dramatically in the last two decades, from just 1,339 in 2005. ICE’s rapidly expanding Alternatives to Detention program is marked by “digital cages,” consisting of GPS-outfitted ankle shackles and invasive phone and location tracking. Government officials and some immigrant advocates have categorized these digital cages as a humane “reform”; …

Foreword To Information Privacy Law At The Crossroads, Woodrow Hartzog

Information privacy has changed quite a bit over the past thirty years. Even if you haven’t been following the news, you’ve probably felt it as part of your daily interaction with information technologies. More of our personal information is converted into data, collected, used, and shared than ever before. The law of information privacy has changed as well. What started with a reckoning around the printing press and handheld cameras became formalized with the advent of the database and has turned into something bigger and more complex than I would have ever imagined.
The idea for this symposium began with …

In this Article, we focus on a key dimension of commercial surveillance by data-intensive digital platforms that is too often treated as a supporting cast member instead of a star of the show: the concept of engagement. Engagement is, simply put, a measure of time, attention, and other interactions with a service. The economic logic of engagement is simple: more engagement equals more ads watched equals more revenue. Engagement is a lucrative digital business model, but it is problematic in several ways that lurk beneath the happy sloganeering of a “free” internet
Our goal in this Article is to isolate …

This Article seeks to answer these questions about how law school leaders might help to cultivate antiracist cultures within their law schools, among their students, and across the legal profession, even in the face of a growing national backlash against antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.32 Part I first establishes why it is important for law schools to "provide [an] education to law students on bias, cross-cultural competency, and racism," as the American Bar Association (ABA) requires, and to train future lawyers who have the abilities to combat racism. 33 In so doing, Part I defines key terms such as …
Criminal Law's Hidden Consensus, Steven Arrigg Koh
Criminal Law's Hidden Consensus, Steven Arrigg Koh
Faculty Scholarship
American criminal law is facing a crisis of meaning. On one hand, the “traditional school” invokes the archetype of the violent criminal—a murderer, rapist, or thief—who must be prosecuted and punished. On the other hand, the “critical school” invokes the archetype of the low-level drug offender, sentenced to a draconian prison term for mere possession of low levels of marijuana. On this account, the criminal legal system is itself systemically pathological, perhaps even warranting abolition. Like ships passing in the night, the two schools appear irreconcilable. This Article helps break this impasse and builds toward a justification for criminal law …

This is a "Director's Cut" version of material that appears in condensed form in Robert L. Tsai, "Demand the Impossible: One Lawyer's Pursuit of Equal Justice for All" (Norton 2024). This essay to be published in Kentucky Law Journal was originally Chapter One. Drawing on archival documents and interviews, this essay delves into Stephen Bright's childhood growing up in Kentucky first in segregated Danville and later in Lexington once he emerges as a social activist and student body president. Special attention is paid to the Vietnam era protests that engulfed the University of Kentucky in the wake of the Kent …

Academic freedom is under assault in the United States.1 Like the authoritarian populism rising across the globe, domestic attacks on individual professors and academic institutions buttress a broader and multifaceted campaign to undermine multiracial democracy and the institutions that sustain and safeguard it.2 The individuals and entities driving this antidemocratic movement have also targeted the electoral process; public education; the right to bodily autonomy; the civil rights and liberties of minoritized and marginalized communities; and freedom of speech and expression (increasingly marshaled against pro-Palestinian advocacy).3 Their openly stated goal is to delegitimize, defund, and “lay siege to” …

Confusion, Chaos, And Conflict In U.S. Law And Health Care After Dobbs, Nicole Huberfeld

The U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision caused a proliferation of contradictory state laws and judicial decisions that are producing confusion for health care providers, which in turn limits access to care for all patients of reproductive age. This paper documents the rapidly changing legal landscape to investigate and contextualize the significance of these inter‑state conflicts and illustrate how inequities deepen when health care is left in the hands of state governments without national law to provide guardrails. Drawing on interdisciplinary scholarship, including legal, medical, and public health research, this essay considers how traditional federalism theory, which encourages sub‑government variation, does …
