Australia's Strategic Posture: A Change In Spatial Orientation Under The Howard Government, Sean M. Mcdonald, Bruce R. Vaughn Nov 2024

Australia's Strategic Posture: A Change In Spatial Orientation Under The Howard Government, Sean M. Mcdonald, Bruce R. Vaughn

The Geographical Bulletin

Australia's evolving strategic posture in the Asia-Pacific region, since March, 1996 when the Howard Government was first elected is examined and discussed: Specifically, the following three geopolitical policies are addressed: 1) In what direction, politically and spatially, has the Howard Government taken Australian defense policy? Specifically, the increased importance placed on the U.S. alliance and the concept of " Forward Cooperation;" 2) Is the Howard Government's defense policy well suited to address Australia's security needs in the rapidly changing geopolitical environment of the Asia-Pacific region; 3) Do the Howard Government's policy initiatives represent continuity or departure for Australian defense policy? …

Activity Spaces Of Dwarfs: Research Via The Internet, Robert J. Kruse, Ii Nov 2024

Activity Spaces Of Dwarfs: Research Via The Internet, Robert J. Kruse, Ii

The Geographical Bulletin

Literature devoted to the concept of activity space occupies an important place in the field of human geography. Researchers have found that spatial experience is affected by characteristics such as race, gender, handicaps and social stigma. However, absent from this literature is an examination of the activity spaces of dwarfs. Dwarfism raises important geographical questions regarding the social constructs and physical constraints faced by individuals of extremely short stature. For this project, questionnaires were posted on an Internet listserver for dwarfs. People who identified themselves as dwarfs responded to a variety of questions about the physical and social aspects of …

Popular As Political Culture: The Fatherland, Nationalist Films, And Modernity In South Korea, Taiwan, And The Philippines, Rolando B. Tolentino

Kritika Kultura

The experience of modernity results from the emergent social relations formed in liberalized market economies, which also posit as sites of newer forms of pain and suffering as especially experienced by those in the margins. As national economies undergo liberalization to survive in globalization, so are their political structures reshaped to become conducive to transnational capital. The essay discusses the relationship of the state and civil society in a postcolonial national setting, looking into their operations and parameters in the South Korean film A Single Spark. The analysis of the effects of the state and civil society in issues of …

Why Teach Philosophy In A World Dominated By Science?, Stephan Millet Nov 2024

Why Teach Philosophy In A World Dominated By Science?, Stephan Millet

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

The significant benefits children gain from doing Philosophy together in the classroom are increasingly well-documented and include enhanced social skills, statistically significant improvement of measured cognitive abilities, and better performance in English, science, mathematics and computers. However, the present day emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects across Western schools is correlated with a decline in the relative importance given to Humanities, Philosophy included. This paper explores the reasons why teaching children to do Philosophy, and to do it collaboratively, is vitally important to the moral and intellectual health of future generations. In doing so, it notes also …

America: The Janus Nation, Peter Murphy Nov 2024

America: The Janus Nation, Peter Murphy

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

America is a paradoxical society. That is one of its strengths. One of its weaknesses is its periodic inability to understand its own paradoxical nature. It is a Janus nation, one in which (in principle) incompatible things exist in a simultaneous state. When this paradoxical fusion works, it has great benefits. When it fails to work, American society loses its inner equilibrium. Pugnacious antagonisms arise in its place. The tension within the United States between the drive toward a union of opposites (most famously embodied in its Constitution) and the periodic centrifugal spinning out of American society into a state …

Toward The Deepening Of Democracy In Indonesia: Assessing The Prospects And Problems From A Habermasian Perspective, Constantinus Fatlolon Nov 2024

Toward The Deepening Of Democracy In Indonesia: Assessing The Prospects And Problems From A Habermasian Perspective, Constantinus Fatlolon

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

From the perspective of Habermas’s theory of law and democracy, Indonesia’s democratic project will require the “reformation” of political institutions and the development of its citizens’ democratic consciousness. The former can be achieved through constitutional amendments while the latter is mediated by civil society and non-governmental organizations. To bridge the gap between the democratically oriented provisions of the constitution and the non-democratic practices of those who govern Indonesian society, political structures and procedures that recognize the equal rights and the autonomy of the citizenry must be installed. The deliberative principles embedded in Pancasila, the state’s official philosophy, can be harnessed …

How To Love In Easy Steps: Heteronormativity, Queer Love, And Foucault's Counter-Conduct, Hannah Jane S. Carpiso, Ninotchka Mumtaj B. Albano Nov 2024

How To Love In Easy Steps: Heteronormativity, Queer Love, And Foucault's Counter-Conduct, Hannah Jane S. Carpiso, Ninotchka Mumtaj B. Albano

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Love is one of the most pervasive human experiences, yet its definition remains elusive to this day. Attempts to describe love have led to the institutionalization and privileging of heterosexual identities, relationships, and ways of loving. Michael Warner refers to this phenomenon as “heteronormativity,” which rigidifies subjectivities and relationalities into fixed, heterosexist structures. However, queer love unfolds in ways different from this relational structure. It invents and re-invents love, relationalities, and subjectivities by moving beyond the dichotomies of heteronormativity. The inventive characteristic of queer love is found in what is known as the “gay mode of life,” an instance of …

Reconsidering Resentment, Christianne A. De Guzman Nov 2024

Reconsidering Resentment, Christianne A. De Guzman

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Resentment typically carries a notorious reputation and is often painted as a negative emotion that impedes communal peace, as it traps its victims in the past. The stigma against resentment, conceptualized broadly as a politicized form of anger, can be attributed to the influence of Nietzsche’s notion of ressentiment. Nevertheless, certain forms of resentment are acknowledged by philosophers as valid reactions to legitimate moral infractions. Resentment, they argue, is intrinsically tied to one’s notion of self-respect and moral values. While standard accounts of resentment may be theoretically cogent when applied to singular and individual issues, they are not conceptually adequate …

Iniciación Deportiva En El Taekwondo, Bezerra Rodrigues Diogo, Eduar Alonso Ceballos Bernal

The Impact Of Family Dynamics On Suicidal Ideation And Substance Use: Examining Lived Experiences Of Persons Who Use Drugs (Pwuds), John Mark F. Dela Cruz, Melhammid C. Tomawis, Tristan I. Filipinas, Joni Ruth T. Pacong, Maria Felicitas M. Mamauag

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Suicide remains a pressing global public health issue, especially among vulnerable populations such as Persons Who Use Drugs (PWUD). Guided by the integrated motivational-volitional (IMV) model of suicidal behavior and the transactional theory of stress and coping, this study explores the lived experiences of Filipino PWUDs with suicidal ideation, focusing on family dynamics—parental relationships, caregiving, cohesion, and adaptability. The study uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to analyze in depth interviews with six (6) PWUDs in rehabilitation at the Department of Health - Drug Abuse Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, Agusan del Sur, Philippines. Results show that parental separation, neglect, and low …

Ále Is Dead: Commercialized Constructions Of Tagalog Feminine Honorifics, Yuan Gabriel R. Reyes Nov 2024

Ále Is Dead: Commercialized Constructions Of Tagalog Feminine Honorifics, Yuan Gabriel R. Reyes

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This study explores the significance of honorifics in Philippine society as a lens for understanding the transformation of contemporary social roles. In particular, female honorifics and female roles mutually shape each other through ongoing social constructions in commercial transactions. Participant observation and narrative interviews were utilized to document the contextual use of honorifics. Data collected from a palengke (traditional market) and a convenience store in Navotas City, Philippines, reveal that honorific usage is calibrated not just within subjective understandings about women, but also within wider social relations defined by age, gender, education, occupation and achievement, relational position in transactional contexts, …

Marites Dañguilan Vitug And Camille Elemia, Unrequited Love: Duterte’S China Embrace, Quezon City: Bughaw, 2024. 309 Pp., Karin Shana Codiase Bangsoy

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Excerpt: As a presidential candidate (and later on, as a president partial to unscripted late-night press conferences), Rodrigo Duterte relied on bombastic, larger than-life pronouncements. When he was asked in 2016 what he would do about the West Philippine Sea tensions with China, Duterte gamely said he would also claim Chinese territory in return: “sasakay ako ng jet ski, dala-dala ko yung flag ng Pilipino, at pupunta ako dun sa airport nila, tapos itanim ko. Then I would say this is ours and do what you want with me. Bahala na kayo.” [I will ride a jet ski, carry a …

Ai: A New Lone-Wolf Terrorism In The Digital Era (Preliminary Analysis), Marthsian Yeksi Anakotta Mya

Journal of Terrorism Studies

This article addresses two fundamental inquiries: can AI engage in acts of terrorism? If so, how might such a phenomenon occur? My hypothesis posits that AI is capable of independently committing acts of terrorism, a classification derived from the study of terrorism known as lone-wolf terrorism. To address these dual issues, this article adopts a criminological approach, which is further elaborated through an examination of lone-wolf terrorism and the advancement of artificial intelligence. As is widely recognized, contemporary terrorist organizations have harnessed technological advancements in the realm of information and communication to perpetrate acts of terrorism within the digital sphere. …

Repurposed Energy, Alexandra B. Klass, Hannah Wiseman Nov 2024

Repurposed Energy, Alexandra B. Klass, Hannah Wiseman

Articles

Wildfires, weather extremes, and other conditions induced partially by climate change add urgency to the project of accelerating the clean energy transition from fossil fuels to zero-carbon energy infrastructure. Yet the hurdles to accomplishing such a massive industrial-scale transition are daunting. Indeed, large renewable energy generation projects regularly face denials or project-killing delays across the United States. This Article proposes a national policy to channel the bulk of new clean energy projects to targeted categories of both rural lands and urban, post-industrial lands that we define collectively as “repurposed energy” sites. Such lands will consist of marginal farmland, abandoned coal …

(Un)Worlding With Karipuna’S Shadowy Alliances: The Mirangã And The Isolados, Hanmin Kin

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This ethnographically inspired article investigates the ways in which the Karipuna Indigenous people in Rondônia defend their land in the Western Brazilian Amazon against forces of deforestation and dispossession. I focus on the Karipuna’s plurivalent and collective forest spirits called the mirangã, through life experience accounts of two survivors from the “pre-contact” era who embody the Karipuna-mirangã connection. Through an analysis of the onto-epistemological entanglements in which the mirangã and my interlocutors are situated, I articulate another front of the Karipuna’s multi-faceted resistance: the struggle of worlding vis-à-vis the non-indigenous world. This process also reveals the association (from …

Bahsé Ahpose: O Adocicamento Das Águas E Dos Peixes Como Regeneração Da Vida No Alto Vaupés, Noroeste Amazônico, José Carlos Almeida Cruz, Justino Sarmento Rezende, Thiago Mota Cardoso

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Optic atrophy protein 1 (OPA1) mediates inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) fusion and cristae organization. Mutations in OPA1 cause autosomal dominant optic atrophy (ADOA), a leading cause of blindness. Cells from ADOA patients show impaired mitochondrial fusion, cristae structure, bioenergetic function, and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) integrity. The mtDNA encodes electron transport chain subunits and is packaged into nucleoids spread within the mitochondrial population. Nucleoids interact with the IMM, and their distribution is tightly linked to mitochondrial fusion and cristae shaping. Yet, little is known about the physio-pathological relevance of nucleoid distribution. We studied the effect of OPA1 and ADOA-associated mutants on …

Terrorist Financing In The Digital Age: An Analysis Of Crypto Currencies And Online Crowd Funding, Eziho Promise Ogele

Journal of Terrorism Studies

This study examines the potential risks of emerging payment technologies and value transfer systems in facilitating terrorist activities. Through an analysis of publications, blogs, and websites associated with terrorist groups and their supporters, the research reveals a growing interest in leveraging cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and online crowdfunding platform to support funding, planning, and implementation of terror attacks. While concrete evidence of large-scale cryptocurrency use by terrorist groups is limited, there are indications of links to several terror attacks globally. This study demonstrates the potential for cryptocurrencies to facilitate clandestine activities, utilizing a document published by ISIS that outlines instructions undetected. …

Exploring The Use Of Music In Deradicalization, Pulung Agustanto, Arthur Josias Simon Runturambi, Puspitasari . Nov 2024

Exploring The Use Of Music In Deradicalization, Pulung Agustanto, Arthur Josias Simon Runturambi, Puspitasari .

Journal of Terrorism Studies

This study seeks to explore music as an alternative method to enrich the variety of deradicalization programs in the framework of counterterrorism. The use of ethnic and local culture-based music is not only intended to prevent radicalism but also as an instrument of recovery therapy for terrorism prisoners in correctional institutions (Lapas). The offer of the programmatic agenda departs from the assumption that deradicalization so far still lacks a cultural approach. Moreover, the archipelago has a variety of music from various ethnicities, for example Javanese music, Sundanese music, Balinese music, Ambon music, and others that are rich in spiritual and …

Addressing The Gap: A Need For A Gender-Based Approach In Indonesia’S Deradicalization Program, Raneeta Mutiara

Journal of Terrorism Studies

An effective deradicalisation program is the key to combating violent extremism and reducing potential harm to society from radical ideologies. A gender-based approach to tackling violent extremism among women has received esteemed recognition from the governments of many countries. Various international organizations and scholarly institutes have also approved the advantages of this method. This work aims to find and address the gap in the current deradicalization program in Indonesia for future development in both academic and practical areas of this subject matter. An integrative literature review is used as a method that involves synthesizing previous research and integrating empirical findings …

Unraveling The Conflict-Ridden Weave: The Regional Security Of The Sahel Region Amidst Wagner Group’S Presence, Ghifarie Aulia Ramadhany, Mohammad Apridio Salahuddin Hakim, Abel Josafat Manullang

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Mercenaries or guns for hire have been a considerable force to reckon with in the international system. Their involvement in the conflicts of all scales have their share of contribution to the eventual outcome of the conflict. Such is the case of the Wagner Group. As a non-state actor, the Wagner Group has engendered numerous tempests across the world, one of them is the Sahel region. Their presence in the Sahel region has been a focal point of disputes within the international community. Against that backdrop, the paper seeks to shed light on how the regional security complex of the …

Fall Of Mosul To Isis: Jostle Of Narratives Between Conspiracy Theory And Betrayal, Hamied Al Hashimi, Moh Arak Alzghwabi

Journal of Terrorism Studies

This article examines the rise and conflict of narratives about the fall of the Iraqi city of Mosul to the Islamic State (ISIS), which marks its tenth anniversary this year (2024). ISIS occupied parts of Iraq from 2014 to 2017, and its defeat required Iraqi mobilization and international support from the international coalition. This article attempts to trace the narratives and their conflicts about the main cause of Mosul’s fall to ISIS. The fall of Mosul was like a snowball that rolled and grew, as it spread to a large area of Northwestern Iraq. It has been shown that several …
