Factors Influencing Households’ Willingness To Adopt Rooftop Solar Power In The Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Factors Influencing Households’ Willingness To Adopt Rooftop Solar Power In The Philippines, Rosalina Palanca-Tan
Economics Department Faculty Publications
The Philippines is endowed with vast solar potential. Through rooftop solar power (RTSP), households directly participate in the clean energy transition, expanding renewable energy supply to meet increasing energy demand and effectively lowering electricity costs for themselves. Yet, RTSP in the country remains largely untapped. Using the Contingent Valuation framework, this study conducted a survey of households in Metro Manila and its neighboring provinces to identify the factors that influence adoption and willingness to pay for RTSP. Survey results reveal that both economic (mainly electricity bill reduction) and environmental benefits are well-recognized and positively correlated with RTSP adoption. The study …
Law-Aware Autonomous Driving, Yang Sun
Law-Aware Autonomous Driving, Yang Sun
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Autonomous driving systems (ADSs) necessitate comprehensive testing prior to deployment in Autonomous Vehicles (AVs). High-fidelity simulators are crucial for this testing, as they can replicate a wide range of scenarios, including those that are difficult or dangerous to recreate in real-world conditions. While previous approaches have demonstrated that test cases can be generated automatically, they often focus on weak oracles (e.g., reaching the destination without collisions) and fail to assess whether the journey was conducted safely and in compliance with some complex property specifications such as traffic laws. In this dissertation, beyond assessing basic properties like energy consumption and proximity …

Towards Trustworthy Recommendation Systems: Beyond Collaborative Filtering, Zhongzhou Liu, Zhongzhou
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Recommendation systems have been widely deployed in various scenarios and applications, such as e-commerce, social media, and streaming services. Recommendation systems have significantly influenced how we interact with various items in a wide range of platforms. They help users discover their preferred items and provide efficient and enjoyable experiences. They also help item providers and platforms to quickly find their potential customers, thus increasing the total revenue and user engagement.
The majority of existing recommendation systems merely focus on the matching between users and items, aiming for higher recommendation accuracy. Collaborative filtering is regarded as one of the most successful …
Contactless And Scalable Approaches For Human Health And Performance Sensing, Ngoc Doan Thu Tran
Contactless And Scalable Approaches For Human Health And Performance Sensing, Ngoc Doan Thu Tran
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Human health and performance sensing has been extensively studied, from physiology to mental health and movement analytics. However, typical approaches rely on invasive and contact sensors or require professional practitioners, limiting their scalability. For example, the gold standard for measuring heart rate is through an electrocardiogram (ECG), which requires multiple probes attached to the skin and is impractical for individuals with skin issues. Additionally, it typically needs to be performed in a hospital setting under the supervision of a trained cardiac physiologist. Depression detection often relies on the expertise of psychologists or psychiatrists. However, there is a shortage of these …
Food Computing: Domain Adaptation And Causal Inference, Qing Wang
Food Computing: Domain Adaptation And Causal Inference, Qing Wang
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
This dissertation addresses two challenges in food computing: food recognition and food image-to-recipe retrieval. The main research ideas are: (1) leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to augment food image representations to mitigate the combined challenges of domain gaps and data imbalance in fine-grained food recognition; (2) proposing a causal-theory inspired cross-modal representation learning formulation for reducing the bias caused by the emphasis on certain ingredients for cross-modal recipe retrieval; and (3) extending the framework to incorporate multiple confounding factors, particularly ingredients and cooking actions, allows for more comprehensive modeling of the food image-torecipe retrieval problem.
We first explore the challenges …
Atmosphere Effects In Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Review, Ben Brown, Cody Lough, Davis Wilson, Joseph Newkirk, Frank Liou
Atmosphere Effects In Laser Powder Bed Fusion: A Review, Ben Brown, Cody Lough, Davis Wilson, Joseph Newkirk, Frank Liou
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The use of components fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) requires the development of processing parameters that can produce high-quality material. Manipulating the most commonly identified critical build parameters (e.g., laser power, laser scan speed, and layer thickness) on LPBF equipment can generate acceptable parts for established materials and moderately intricate part geometries. The need to fabricate increasingly complex parts from unique materials drives the limited research into LPBF process control using underutilized parameters, such as atmosphere composition and pressure. As presented in this review, manipulating atmosphere composition and pressure in laser beam welding has been shown to expand …

Breaking And Trapping Cooper Pairs By Rydberg-Molecule Spectroscopy In Atomic Fermi Superfluids, Chih Chun Chien, S. I. Mistakidis, H. R. Sadeghpour
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose a spectroscopic probe of the breaking and localization of Cooper pairs in an atomic Fermi superfluid interacting with a Rydberg impurity. This is achieved by monitoring the formation of diatomic and triatomic ultralong-range molecular species in the superfluid across the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover. The triatomic Rydberg molecule in the BEC regime heralds the trapping of a tightly bound Cooper pair, reminiscent of pion capture in nuclear matter, while the breaking of a Cooper pair on the BCS side by a diatomic Rydberg molecule is evocative of binary-star tidal disruption by a black hole. Spectroscopy of the …

Very-high-energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma-ray emissions were observed in High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) data from the lobes of the micro quasar SS 433, making them the first set of astrophysical jets that were resolved at TeV energies. In this work, we update the analysis of SS 433 using 2565 days of data from the HAWC observatory. Our analysis reports the detection of a point-like source in the east lobe at a significance of 6.6σ and in the west lobe at a significance of 8.2σ. For each jet lobe, we localize the gamma-ray emission and identify a best-fit position. The locations are …

The first TeV γ-ray source with no lower energy counterparts, TeV J2032+4130, was discovered by HEGRA. It appears in the third HAWC catalog as 3HWC J2031+415 and it is a bright TeV γ-ray source whose emission has previously been resolved as two sources: HAWC J2031+415 and HAWC J2030+409. While HAWC J2030+409 has since been associated with the Fermi Large Area Telescope Cygnus Cocoon, no such association for HAWC J2031+415 has yet been found. In this work, we investigate the spectrum and energy-dependent morphology of HAWC J2031+415. We associate HAWC J2031+415 with a γ-ray binary system containing the pulsar PSR J2032+4127 …

Context. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be capable of accelerating cosmic rays (CRs) to PeV energies. SNR G106.3+2.7 is a prime PeVatron candidate. It is formed by a head region, where the pulsar J2229+6114 and its boomerang-shaped pulsar wind nebula are located, and a tail region containing SN ejecta. The lack of observed gamma ray emission from the two regions of this SNR has made it difficult to assess which region would be responsible for the PeV CRs. Aims. We aim to characterize the very-high-energy (VHE, 0.1-100 TeV) gamma ray emission from SNR G106.3+2.7 by determining the morphology and …

The origin of high-energy galactic cosmic rays is yet to be understood, but some galactic cosmic-ray accelerators can accelerate cosmic rays up to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma-rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma-rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multimessenger analysis that combines gamma-rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the MultiMission Maximum Likelihood framework with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood to search for …

This paper addresses the problem of deriving heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation robust (HAR) inference for a scalar parameter of interest, under the assumption of a known upper bound on data persistence. Finite-sample optimal tests are derived within the Gaussian location model, revealing that robustness-efficiency tradeoffs are primarily determined by the maximal persistence. With a suitable adjustment to the critical value, the equal-weighted cosine (EWC) test emerges as nearly optimal, wherein the long-run variance is estimated through projections onto q type II cosines. This approach establishes a direct link between the choice of q and persistence assumptions, accompanied by adjustments to the …

Severe joint infections, such as septic arthritis, require rapid diagnostic testing of the synovial fluid aspirated from joints level so that a surgical team can be assembled quickly. We present a diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) system for noncontact determination of infection. Using a light-tight syringe holder and fiber optic probe, diffusely reflected light from 475 to 655 nm was acquired from 18 patient samples through the wall of a syringe in a noncontact and sterile manner. We determined the reflectance ratios at two different wavelengths—R 490/R 600 and R 580/R 600 and found statistically significant …

The primary objective of this research project was to investigate the efficacy of integrating Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Developmental Relationship-Based Interventions (DRBI) as a novel intervention approach for young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and related disabilities. By coalescing select components of ABA and DRBI, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of combining two common evidence-based practices for young children with autism and related disabilities. Specifically, this research explored if the combination of these two evidence-based practices would increase the social, emotional, pre-academic, and communication skills of young children with autism and related disabilities and how …
