Algorithm And Semi-Physical System Simulation For Command Intent Recognition Of Uav In Low-Resource Environment, Hongfu Liu, Yajing Fu, Wanpeng Zhang, Hu Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: When a communication network is partially disabled or disrupted, an UAV is plunged into a "low-resource environment" and must rely on local hardware resources. This situation imposes constraints on computing power, storage capacity, and energy availability. To address the need for command intent recognition in such environments, a semi-physical simulation system for UAV in emergency rescue operations has been designed and implemented. Based on the low resource airborne hardware in the loop, the system simulates UAV command intention recognition and mission planning through GIS+BIM 3D environment modeling task scenarios. A new lightweight algorithm for intent recognition has been proposed, …

Influence Of Patch Characteristics On Pollinator Behavior And Seed Production In Centaurea Stoebe, Abigail Hiltke Dec 2024

Influence Of Patch Characteristics On Pollinator Behavior And Seed Production In Centaurea Stoebe, Abigail Hiltke

Theses - ALL

Discontinuous, or patchy, landscapes may affect pollinator foraging behaviors and could potentially lower the fitness of isolated plant communities by limiting and/or altering pollination services. I tested this idea by examining changes in pollinator behavior in patches of spotted knapweed of different size, flower density, and distance from one another. Based on predictions from optimal foraging theory, I identified and measured key pollination promoting behaviors that may change when foragers are exposed to discontinuous landscape. These behaviors were pollinator visitation rates to patches, the number of visits to individual flowers within patches, and the handling time per flower. These factors …

The use of exocyclic enol ethers as nucleophiles in carbon-carbon bond forming reactions has been underutilized in organic synthesis. This work describes the use of 6-iodomethyl-2-methylenetetrahydropyran as a bis-exocyclic enol ether equivalent for the synthesis of pyran derivatives. Use of this linchpin allows for bidirectional elaboration of the pyran core by two directional carbonyl ene. The development of a convergent, modular synthesis of 2,6-disubstituted-4H-pyrans in a three-step sequence starting from 6-iodomethyl-2-methylenetetrahydropyran is described. Initial carbonyl ene reaction of 6-iodomethyl-2-methylenetetrahydropyran with aldehydes or activated ketones was followed by elimination of iodide to give cross oriented bis-enol ethers that contain both endocyclic …

Population Dynamics In Myxococcus Xanthus Developmental Biofilm, Trosporsha Tasnim Khan Dec 2024

Population Dynamics In Myxococcus Xanthus Developmental Biofilm, Trosporsha Tasnim Khan

Dissertations - ALL

Myxococcus xanthus, a soil-dwelling bacterium, exhibits complex multicellular behaviors through self-organization into biofilms. M. xanthus cells traverse agar surfaces, forming either predatory biofilm or vegetative swarm that expands outward in the presence of nutrients. Upon nutrient depletion, the swarm reorganizes as cells “stream” inward, coalescing into aggregates that mature into spore-filled fruiting bodies. This starvation-induced biofilm development is a complex process, governed by stringent genetic controls and coordinated population interactions. Despite extensive research into the dynamics of this development, from the onset of starvation to fruiting body maturation, a comprehensive understanding is still missing. This dissertation sheds light on the …

On Physical Processes That Work Like Learning Algorithms, Vidyesh Rao Anisetti

Dissertations - ALL

Adaptive behavior is a widespread phenomenon observed in both living and non-living systems, manifesting in diverse forms such as the directional growth of plants in response to sunlight and the directed aging of materials. Such diversity demands a physics-based approach. Thus, the emerging field of physical learning aims to explain these phenomena by drawing analogies between adaptive processes in nature and learning in neural networks, motivating the central question of this thesis: Can physical processes in nature function like learning algorithms? A typical learning algorithm involves two fundamental steps: signaling and weight up- dating. In the Part I of the …

On The Use Of Introspection In The Study Of Consciousness, Yaojun Lu Dec 2024

On The Use Of Introspection In The Study Of Consciousness, Yaojun Lu

Dissertations - ALL

For the past half century, introspection has once again become a trusted source of knowledge in the study of consciousness. Some philosophers reflect on their own consciousness to draw metaphysical conclusions; some psychologists hypothesize observable regularities of consciousness by collecting introspective reports. They operate under the doctrine that first-person perspective provides a privileged access to the conscious mind. This dissertation is a critical examination of the use of introspection in the scientific and metaphysical study of consciousness. I first develop classic criticism of the privileged access, with a diagnosis of the failure of introspective psychology and a reflection on the …

Enhancing Graph Neural Networks By Editing Graphs, Jiayu Li

Dissertations - ALL

Graphs are pervasive in both the natural world and various domains of science and engineering. Numerous advanced classifiers, such as Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), have been developed to perform node classification on these graphs. However, as graphs become denser with an increasing number of edges, GNNs often suffer from suboptimal generalization performance due to the presence of task-irrelevant connections. These redundant connections can introduce noise, consume excessive computational resources, and degrade performance. Identifying and preserving critical connections in large-scale graphs, while pruning unnecessary ones, is crucial for enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of GNNs in node classification, particularly for GCNs. …
