Identifiability And Convergence Behavior For Markov Chain Monte Carlo Using Multivariate Probit Models, Xiao Zhang Nov 2024

Identifiability And Convergence Behavior For Markov Chain Monte Carlo Using Multivariate Probit Models, Xiao Zhang

Michigan Tech Publications

Multivariate probit models have been popularly utilized to analysis multivariate ordinal data. However, the identifiable multivariate probit models entail the covariance matrix for the underlying multivariate normal variables to be a correlation matrix, which brings a rigorous task to conduct efficient statistical analysis. Parameter expansion to make the identifiable model to be non-identifiable has been inevitably explored. However, the effect of the expanded parameters on the convergence of Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is seldomly investigated; in addition, the comparison of MCMC developed based on the identifiable model and that based on the non-identifiable model is hardly ever explored, especially …

Impact Of Chytrid Fungal Infection On Muscle Structure In Amphibians, Esther Hassan, Chisom Ukachukwu Nov 2024

Impact Of Chytrid Fungal Infection On Muscle Structure In Amphibians, Esther Hassan, Chisom Ukachukwu

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Many fungal infections affect a wide variety of ecosystems. They cause numerous negative consequences, one in particular being the disruption of biodiversity. disrupting biodiversity and leading to numerous negative consequences. A previous study in the Kinsey lab focused on a chytrid fungal disease, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a species of chytrid fungus. This disease poses a major threat to amphibian populations worldwide. The Bd zoospores infect the epidermis impacting essential systems. This leads to electrolyte transport that is conducted through the epidermis from the environment has now become disrupted and the ions required for daily functions are diminished. Eventually, these lack …

Predicting And Monitoring Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor Therapy Using Artificial Intelligence In Pancreatic Cancer, Guangbo Yu, Zigeng Zhang, Aydin Eresen, Qiaoming Hou, Farideh Amirrad, Sha Webster, Surya M. Nauli, Vahid Yaghmai, Zhuoli Zhang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most lethal cancers, primarily due to its late diagnosis and limited treatment options. This review examines the challenges and potential of using immunotherapy to treat pancreatic cancer, highlighting the role of artificial intelligence (AI) as a promising tool to enhance early detection and monitor the effectiveness of these therapies. By synthesizing recent advancements and identifying gaps in the current research, this review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of how AI and immunotherapy can be integrated to develop more personalized and effective treatment strategies. The insights from this review may guide future research efforts …

Communication In Noise Is The Window On Cognition, R. Haven Wiley Nov 2024

Communication In Noise Is The Window On Cognition, R. Haven Wiley

Animal Sentience

As Griffin surmised, communication is the window on cognition, but as shown here, only if it is noisy. This commentary is an invitation to consider the full implications of the evolution of noisy communication. A combination of Information Theory, Signal Detection Theory, and Natural Selection, in a unified theory of the evolution of communication, reveals that noise is inevitable. All organisms are thus decision makers. Perception, thought, freedom of decision, self-awareness, metabolism, and natural selection all share the consequences of signals in noise. A full understanding of each requires attention to the errors of receivers. Griffin’s hunch is correct with …

Higher Expectations: A Systematic Review Of Reporting The Science Of Propensity Score Modeling In Criminal Justice Studies, Christopher M. Campbell, Ryan M. Labrecque, Alicia D. Mckay Nov 2024

Higher Expectations: A Systematic Review Of Reporting The Science Of Propensity Score Modeling In Criminal Justice Studies, Christopher M. Campbell, Ryan M. Labrecque, Alicia D. Mckay

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objectives This systematic review examined the reporting practices of propensity score modeling (PSM) in criminology and criminal justice studies. Methods There were 229 articles (with 527 individual sets of PSM analyses) published between 2000 and 2022 in the top 19 ranked criminology and criminal justice journals that were identified for study inclusion. These articles were systematically coded to assess the presence of key PSM reporting elements, including covariates, estimation methods, balancing strategy, matching type, sample size, balance assessment, sensitivity analysis, and post-PSM analyses. Results The use of PSM has increased dramatically over the last two decades. Study findings suggest that …

Holistic & Socially Just Admissions Procedures In An Artificially Intelligent (Ai) World, Lucinda Bratini, Ali Cunningham Abbott, Tracy N. Baker

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations

In our ever-evolving social context, the counseling profession continues to center social justice and decolonial praxis in training programs. Simultaneously, we remain attuned to shifts in machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) which require us to adjust and grow. This roundtable discussion shares the development of a holistic admissions review (HAR) pilot process, which incorporates relational, diversity and social justice values alongside AI innovations and current CACREP considerations.

Future-Oriented Science Learning And Its Effects On Students’ Emotions, Futures Literacy And Agency In The Anthropocene, Jessica Chan, Sibel Erduran Nov 2024

Future-Oriented Science Learning And Its Effects On Students’ Emotions, Futures Literacy And Agency In The Anthropocene, Jessica Chan, Sibel Erduran

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Science education bears the broader objective of nurturing students today to be scientifically-literate citizens of tomorrow who are able to foresee challenges, invent solutions and make responsible decisions for global issues. As a prelude to the new focus of agency in the Anthropocene, this paper presents an intervention on climate change with upper secondary students in a museum of natural history in England. Instructional strategies such as infusing scenarios and arts into scientific discussions were adopted to induce imagination, future-oriented thinking and emotional responses. Statistical results showed that the intervention significantly enhanced participants’ futures literacy, environmental agency and positive emotions. …
